Villa Charities grows to meet
the growing needs of our
community. Starting in September
2008, even more children in the
community are benefitting from
Columbus Centre’s unique brand of
childcare. Construction is complete
on a new day care facility in Centro
Marathon 2009 is the brainchild of Frank Ciccolini
involved with Villa Charities for many years.
“I was at the Columbus Centre one day and I
glanced towards Villa Colombo and I thought of
my nonna who used to live there,” explains
Correale. “That’s when this idea came to me –
how can I raise funds for a place that is so special
to me and my family?”
From there, Pino and Frank and their
devoted organizing committee approached the
Foundation and started planning the newest
event in support of the Villa Charities family of
organizations.
Villa Colombo Services for Seniors
Villa at Wasaga Beach
Once again, 24 seniors from the Elderly Persons’
Centre (E.P.C.) of Villa Colombo spent a beautiful
week at Wasaga Beach from August 10th to 17th,
2008 escorted by their coordinator Mirella Ialongo.
The seniors had a full week of activities and good
food. Everyone participated in daily exercises at 10
a.m., followed by long walks, card games and bocce
games. In the afternoon, one hour was dedicated to
reciting the rosary. The evenings always ended with
bingo and sitting around the bonfire, with the
exception of one night when the group went to Casino
Rama for dinner and of course to gamble!
The oldest of the group was an 89 year old
female, who was so happy to be able to attend that
Improving facilities
for our residents
Beginning in early October 2008, Villa
Colombo will be undertaking a major renovation of
all bathing areas in the Fusco Wing.
This project will be happening simultaneously
on all floors, including the ground floor, and it is
anticipated to take about four months to complete.
“This renovation is long overdue and we are
very excited with this opportunity to improve the
quality of life for our residents, and the overall
appearance of the home,” states Enzo Cuttini,
Chair, Villa Colombo Services for Seniors.
Since opening over 30 years ago, Villa
Colombo has undergone various renovations and
additions – including the construction of the Fusco
Wing in 1988 and the Fidani Wing in 2001.
“The current renovations of the bathing areas
demonstrate Villa Colombo’s commitment to provide the
best culturally sensitive care in a comfortable
environment,” states Cuttini. “During the project, the
highest standards of safety will be observed as health and
safety of our residents and staff is our highest concern.”
Though Villa Colombo is a long-term care facility,
it recognizes and supports seniors in achieving their
goal of living at home independently for as long as
range of programs that can keep the elderly
population out of institutions for as long as possible.
From the Frail Elderly Centre to Alzheimer’s
Services for Seniors is there for every step of the
Volunteering: From Compassion to Action. At Villa
The event, hosted by Extendicare, raised $40,000 for
Villa Colombo Vaughan.
“This event was a success not only financially but also
socially, as it gave the opportunity for friends to dress in jeans
states Sam Ciccolini, Chair, Villa Colombo Vaughan. “The
Special thanks to Linda Long, Magda DiMaria and
On Monday August 25, 2008, residents, volunteers and staff
gathered in the newly created residents’ vegetable garden for the
official inauguration.
Residents were very happy to taste the vegetables that grew
from the seeds that they planted in May. The daily visits to the
garden have become a ritual at Villa Colombo Vaughan where
residents, after their morning espresso, gather in the garden
enjoying one of their favorite hobbies.
This is just one of the ways Villa Colombo Vaughan upholds its
commitment to providing the best culturally sensitive care to the
seniors who call the Villa home. Many Italian-Canadians take great
pride in their gardens, something that Villa Vaughan’s staff and board
members wanted to encourage and continue for the residents.
Special thanks to Sam Ciccolini and the entire board of
directors for creating this garden for Villa Colombo Vaughan’s
Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana
Italian Immersion: l’esperienza Centro Scuola in Abruzzo
Dr. Biagio Aulino, York Catholic District School Board
The Centro Scuola
York Catholic Summer
School 2008 Program
immersed students in
Italian language and
culture. Research has
shown that classroom
immersion in another
language teaches students
about cultural diversity,
raises cultural selfawareness,
and improves
communicative competence
in the target language.
Students began their
classes at St. Elizabeth
CHS, one of York Catholic District School Board’s high schools.
For one week they were provided with the necessary linguistic
tools to aide them on their ‘sejour’ in Italy. On the first day of
class, all students regardless of their prior knowledge of the
Italian language completed a Placement Test to determine their
fluency and cultural and grammatical knowledge of the
language. After one week the entire class and the teachers
transferred to the residences in Italy
The best way to learn the language is to be immersed completely!
Teachers and supervisors worked in tandem to provide the students
with as many opportunities as possible to practice the language during
class and learning leisure time. Some of the popular activities included
a scavenger hunt Caccia su Atri and Roseto where students in groups
of four interacted with the local residents in Italian to complete their
cultural and historical questions regarding the two towns. Likewise,
the Visita al mercantino introduced the students to haggling for
bargains in italiano. One of the many highlights was playing calcio
with their Italian counterparts. Students mastered all the necessary
vocabulary dealing with soccer that became handy during the game.
The weekend cultural excursions to Firenze, Betolle, Ferrara,
Venezia, Tivoli, and Rome enriched the students both culturally
and linguistically. Students had the opportunity to write postcards
to relatives in Toronto and keep a journal about the monuments,
churches, museums, and cities that they visited.
Students returned to Canada with a sense of italianita.
Indeed, the Centro Scuola total immersion approach to learning
the Italian language and culture was a great success! Immersion
in Italian language has the unique potential to teach students
strategies for overcoming many types of linguistic barriers when
communicating effectively with speakers of the language.
Many thanks to Alberto Di Giovanni, Direttore Centro
Scuola, for all his efforts in promoting and maintaining the
Italian language in the last 30 years in our multicultural society.
Eternal City, to the bridges in Venice, the early sunrises behind “il
mare,” the late nights dancing, to trying to converse with the man
who serves us gelato, to the early lessons in our classroom, and the
sound of “il treno” as we fall asleep, this trip has created countless
memories that will last a lifetime.” - Stefania Ambrico
“My experiences in Rome, Florence and Venice were
outstanding, but my favorite part of the Centro Scuola trip was
being in the small town of Pineto, experiencing Italian people
and culture first hand. Being immersed in a full Italian program
not only allowed my Italian to flourish, but also my
independence to grow.” - Elyse Calvi
In a nutshell, Italy was everything Melissa dreamed it would
be and so much more! As for her Italian, she called Nonna on
the drive home and they spoke for over 5 minutes - - all Italian!
I look forward to seeing you again in a year and a half at the
I would just like to say thank you for such an amazing
experience. I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. I enjoyed the
trip so much that I think I will be coming back again next
summer for level 2! … I really appreciate all your hard work..
- Marie Canonaco
“It is because of you that we got the experience of a lifetime.
One word: priceless. Grazie…… ‘ - Chiara Mabrucco
“Signor Di Giovanni, grazie di tutto!. Your kindness and
generosity has made this one of the most amazing times of my life.
Thank you for all of your hard work, it is greatly appreciated.
The Schola Cantorum
offers young singers
the joy of music
The joy of learning to sing in a
choir creates memories that will last a
lifetime. Once again, the Schola
Cantorum choir for youngsters aged 9
to 15 began their Saturday morning
program in September in two different
locations, involving families in Toronto
and in Maple. Centro Scuola has
supported this creative activity for over
10 years. During that time some
members have grown up to become
dedicated musicians active in teaching
and performing the songs they love.
Open houses for the Toronto and
Maple locations took place in
September. Dante Aligheri Academy
will host the Toronto rehearsals, while
Fr. John Kelly Catholic Elementary
School is the new location in Maple.
Jessica Scarlato and Angelina Gulla,
the co-directors of the Toronto section,
are enthusiastic about the year ahead for
their young singers. “Last year we tried
some new arrangements of choral
music, and the kids learned it right
away. We want to do even more this
year,” explains the energetic Ms. Gulla.
The Maple co-directors, Natalie
Ciarallo and Danielle MacMillan, are also
looking forward to another fruitful year
developing the skills of their talented
young singers. The Christmas Concert
and the annual Spring Concert bring the
two sections together for performances
that leave the audience cheering,
applauding, and shouting Encore.
“Thanks to Centro Scuola we were fortunate to visit Italy in July
2008. It was overwhelming to take in everything at once. The
majestic sites of Rome, the enchanting Amalfi coast, Taormina,
Tropea, Reggio Calabria, etc. Whether it be the culture, the food, the
fashion, the hectic streets, a whole new language during our stay in
Calabria, we all had an unforgettable experience.” - Amanda Di Febo
Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana
Fall Semester in Italy expands to two
locations
The Fall Semester in Italy program
organized by Centro Scuola has proven so
popular that now two school boards are
taking part. From September 2008 to
December 2008, secondary school students
from the York Catholic District School
Board will take up residence in Roseto degli
Abruzzi together with teachers from the
YCDSB, assistants and a supervising
Principal. They will attend classes daily in
classrooms available in a local school in
order to earn their credits for the term. At
the same time, another group of students
from the Toronto Catholic District School
Board will arrive in Atri, Abruzzo to
experience the fall semester overseas with
teachers and supervisory staff from the
TCDSB. Plans are also in place for both
groups of students to have excursions to
Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast as
they begin their sojourn in Italy.
Centro Scuola and the participating
school boards share the philosophy that
travelling and experiencing life in another
country adds a valuable dimension to a
young person’s education. To prepare for
the trips, Centro Scuola Director Alberto Di
Giovanni met with the parents, students,
and teachers from each board. The
meetings outlined the benefits of this
experience but also the commitment
necessary to fulfill the requirements of the 4
or 5 credit class load while living in
residence far from home. Practical matters
were discussed as well, such as the need to
pack carefully for such a long stay, the
limitations on internet use in the residences
and the rules of conduct expected by the
adults in place of their parents. Students
who had attended the program in previous
years contributed their enthusiastic
comments to these meetings. A number of
students this year are the siblings of alumni
from the program, their families eager to
allow the brothers and sisters to enjoy the
same experience.
More information about the Fall
Semester program is available on the Centro
Scuola website, and on the websites of the
participating school boards. In previous
years, the students have kept a running
journal of their impressions posted on the
websites. It is hoped that will continue.
Words Hit…and Hurt
The controversy over the movie Tropic Thunder brought
international attention to a hurtful word – “retard.” This is a word
that is used in common parlance and in everyday interactions,
almost as if people don’t realize what they are saying and how
hurtful it can be.
After hearing the word used casually by an employee in a local
supermarket, VITA’s Director of Clinical and Educational Services,
Dave Hingsburger, decided to do something about it. He designed
a business card with a message.
The cards, pictured here, have an in your face message, but it
is a message VITA feels needs to be stated.
At a recent meeting of VITA’s Rights Group, a self-advocate
organization, the use of the word “retard” was discussed. Members
were clear that the word was both hateful and hurtful. They’d all
heard it. They’d all felt it.
Some comments from the group:
• “Retard” is a word in English that should not be in the
dictionary or be used”
• “So many years you listen to the same comment, you get
used to it”
•
“It really knocks you in your head when your family says it”
During the Tropic Thunder controversy, VITA’s cards, still in
production, were put on the web as a demonstration of what could
be done. These cards were an instant hit. VITA decided to give away
the artwork and design to anyone who wanted to reprint them.
It Begins With Family
Families, the deep love of families, has led to the creation of
many of the social service structures that today serve millions of
people.
As with other groups, families were at the forefront of the
creation of community options for those with mental health
needs. Mens Sana (now part of VITA) was created in 1991 by
families who had someone who needed specialized support in
order to be successful in the community. Out of that concern
grew a grass roots initiative which raised money to fund a
program that was designed with love and care. Since that date,
Mens Sana has never received any funding other than that
provided through sheer hard work and determination. Hours of
bingo games and fund raisers brought in funds that were
magically transformed into services.
A call for funding proposals was recently put out by the
United Way of York Region and VITA responded. The process
was a long and grueling one, but it was a process that involved
others coming in and looking carefully at how VITA and Mens
Sana provided service and how it shepherded funds.
“I’ve never seen a process where a funding body looked so
closely at a service,” said Manuela Dalla Nora, Executive Director,
14 ❘ Villa Charities Newsletter
Initially VITA received requests from all across Ontario and
over the world. Everyone was sent the artwork within hours of
requesting it. One organization, Active Gray Matter, from
Richmond, Virginia, asked for permission to print and give away
the cards to anyone who wants them. So far they have printed
20,000 cards and have given away 18,500 of them!
“We need to address the use of words that hurt others,” states
Manuela Dalla Nora, Executive Director, VITA. “VITA is proud to
provide some leadership in this area and proud to know that what
was created here in Toronto is being used all over the world.”
VITA and author of the funding proposal. “The process involved
first writing a proposal and then going through an evaluation. They
asked insightful questions and were clearly concerned about the
quality of care offered to people with mental health needs and our
ability to successfully carry out that work.”
When Mens Sana was approved for funding it represented
the first time the organization would receive stable funding
dollars. But it represented more than that, it represented
validation for those parents who initially dreamed of a service
that would truly care for their children.
The funding will expand day supports for adults with
mental illness living in the Vaughan community. The day
program will operate Monday to Friday and provide an
opportunity for adults with mental health needs to have a safe
and respectful place to socialize, learn new skills and enjoy a
nutritious meal together. Referrals are now being accepted by
VITA for the Mens Sana Day Program.
With the support of the United Way of York Region, VITA
will continue to ensure that the dream of that original group of
parents continues.

A Gift for Phyllis
The work is almost done. The institutions
where people with disabilities were housed away
from the community are almost closed. Vita
Community Living Services has, along with
many other agencies, been welcoming many
people with disabilities back to their home
communities.
Over the past four years almost 1,000
individuals have returned to the community.
The Ministry of Community and Social Services
Central East Region held a lunch on June 5th,
2008 to thank agencies for their commitment to
both people with disabilities and to the concept
of community living. Following good food and
inspirational conversation, each agency was
given a gift of a blue spruce tree. The tree
symbolized new beginnings and a new life here
in the community. Manuela Dalla Nora,
Executive Director of VITA, accepted the tree on
behalf of VITA.
As the event drew to a close, Kelly Forster,
Program Supervisor from the Ministry of
Community and Social Services, noticed that the
table decoration, a birdhouse, would be left
behind. She had visited Lloydtown, one of VITA’s
group homes, a few weeks before and met
Phyllis. This group home had been created
specifically for those returning from the
institution and Phyllis was one of the women
who had come from Rideau Regional Center. It is
impossible to meet Phyllis and not be charmed
by her. She is passionate about her new home
and about living life freely in the community. Ms
Forster picked up the birdhouse from the center
of the table and said, “Here, take this and give it
to Phyllis.”
The VITA Masters Series – Year 2
The Master’s Series is comprised of 4 lectures that have
been selected to meet the needs of service providers as we all
work towards providing the best of care.
Upcoming Lectures:
November 7th, 2008 – Amy Tabor will be in town to
talk about rights and how organizations can work to ensure
that the rights of people with intellectual disabilities are at
On the way home from the lunch, Manuela
dropped in to visit with Phyllis and the others at
Lloydtown.
“As I watched them at home, I thought of all
the hours of planning and preparation it had
taken staff at VITA to make these transitions
happen,” states Dalla Nora. “There were times
when it seemed like all the work in the world
wasn’t enough to meet the needs of everyone,
but we came through on top.”
Phyllis was someone who needed a lot of
planning and preparation for the move – she was
someone who desperately wanted to succeed in
her new home. Phyllis was not only surprised to
have Manuela stop in to visit with her but was
stunned at the unexpected gifts. Manuela gave
the birdhouse and the tree to Phyllis and told her
that they were symbols of being home, of
belonging to the community. Phyllis decided to
plant the tree near her bedroom so she could
look out and see it grow, but first she would just
keep it with her for a few days.
She loved the gift and couldn’t part with it right
away. She knew that it would be planted, but for
now - she wanted it nearby. It was like she
understood deeply the meaning behind the gift.
Anyone who may happen by the house might
notice the tree, but they will not know what the
tree means to Phyllis.
For Phyllis, it means that she is home.
the centre of service.
Support Villa Charities
Villa Charities needs your support.
Each donation, whatever the amount,
makes a real difference to the quality
of life for the thousands we serve.
Here are some ways to donate:
In Honour
A wonderful way to honour someone.
Instead of the usual present for a
birthday, why not give that special
person a unique gift – the knowledge
that someone’s life has been touched
by a donation made in their honour.
In Memory
Families are comforted in their sorrow
by gifts made in memory of their
loved one. Acknowledgement cards
are sent to inform them of your
thoughtfulness.
Appreciated Securities
Gifts of publicly traded stocks enable
donors to give the most for the least
cost because the capital gains tax on
the appreciation of gifted marketable
securities is eliminated. Ask the
Foundation for more information.
Life Insurance Policies
A donor may contribute a life
insurance policy currently owned or
purchase a new one as a charitable gift.
Premiums are tax deductible, as is the
cash surrender value of the policy.
Bequests
A bequest is a gift made by Will,
specifically by directing a portion of
an estate to Villa Charities.
Tree of Life
The Tree of Life stands tall in the lobby
of Villa Colombo Toronto. It is a
magnificent bronze and brass sculpture
that allows individuals to pay tribute to
beloved family members and friends.
For a gift of $1,000, a leaf will be
inscribed with the name of your
choice. For a gift of $5,000, the name
will be inscribed on a rock.
Official tax receipts are issued for all
donations over $20.
