Improving Mind, Body and Soul<br />

Under the direction of Gabriella Lalli, Athletic<br />

Programme Consultant, Columbus Centre is pleased to<br />

announce the addition of cutting edge programs aimed at<br />

helping members expand and increase their athletic options.<br />

Pre & Post Natal Fitness: The classes will provide a safe<br />

and effective training program with appropriate exercise<br />

selection and intensity for each pre and post natal woman in<br />

the group. Benefits to this type of exercise include improved<br />

energy and endurance and faster return to pre-pregnancy<br />

shape and level of fitness.<br />

Kids and Youth Boot Camp: These classes are designed for<br />

kids 7 to 10 and youth 11 to 14 years of age. It will optimize<br />

competence in ten fitness domains: Cardiovascular<br />

endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed,<br />

coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. Kids who feel<br />

good about themselves excel in their studies and sports and<br />

tend to make good decisions in their life. The variety of drills<br />

Kids Boot Camp employs makes sure every kid is successful.<br />

Pilates for Youth (12 to 16 years): Pilates is a mindbody<br />

discipline that strengthens the core muscles of the body,<br />

such as the back and deep abdominals. Pilates focuses on<br />

using our breath to gain awareness of the body from the<br />

inside-out, providing a variety of essential benefits. Many<br />

Gabriella Lalli has been in the fitness<br />

industry since 1986, and has been<br />

teaching fitness classes and providing<br />

personal fitness training at Columbus<br />

Centre since 1988. Gabriella has several<br />

certifications from Humber College, Can-<br />

Fit-Pro, Ontario Fitness Council and The<br />

American Council on Exercise. In 1990<br />

Gabriella placed first for the City of<br />

Toronto in a middle weight body building<br />

competition and later that year she place<br />

third for the province of Ontario.<br />

areas, the day care also has an<br />

outdoor area where children can play during the day or in the<br />

after school program.<br />

The new space at Centro Abruzzo is also home to a new<br />

space for VITA Day Programs. There are spacious multi-purpose<br />

rooms, a large teaching kitchen and offices where VITA members<br />

can learn the life skills they need to be fully integrated members<br />

of the community.<br />

Pilates exercises relieve strain from the spine and joints<br />

caused by improper posture such as lugging heavy back<br />

packs to school or slouching at the desk. Pilates inculcates<br />

proper body alignment to develop a healthy musculoskeletal<br />

functioning in daily activities as well as in sports.<br />

Meditation and Stress Reduction Classes: Meditation has<br />

been practiced for thousands of years. Originally, it was<br />

meant to help people deepen their understanding of the<br />

sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, many people<br />

turn to meditation for relaxation and stress reduction.<br />

Meditation produces a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil<br />

mind. Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and<br />

emotional stability. And these effects don’t end when your<br />

meditation session ends. Meditation can have lasting effects<br />

on your emotional and physical well-being.<br />

Line Dancing: Ever wanted to try line dancing? No<br />

partner required for this fun-filled class. This type of dance is<br />

a low impact, high intensity activity, making it suitable for<br />

those with joint or weight issues.<br />

Gabriella was recently hired by<br />

Columbus Centre as the new Athletic<br />

Programme Consultant.<br />

“I feel that Columbus Centre offers the<br />

best athletic programs in the Toronto area,”<br />

states Gabriella. “I’m sure that with hard<br />

work and a positive attitude the existing<br />

programs will continue to grow both in<br />

attendance and strength, and the new<br />

programs for the Fall/Winter session will be<br />

warmly embraced.”<br />

“We are extremely excited about our new space at Centro<br />

Abruzzo,” states Paul Mior, Chair, VITA Community Living<br />

Services. “These new facilities will allow us to increase the ways<br />

in which we serve individuals with intellectual disabilities and<br />

expand programs so even more people in need can be served by<br />

VITA.”<br />
