EPISTLE READING<br />

ACTS OF THE APOSTLES (1:1-8)<br />

In the first book, O Theophilos, I have dealt<br />

with all that Jesus began to do and teach,<br />

until the day when he was taken up, after he<br />

had given commandment through the Holy<br />

Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.<br />

To them he presented himself alive after his<br />

passion by many proofs, appearing to them<br />

during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom<br />

of God. And while staying with them<br />

he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem,<br />

but to wait for the promise of the Father,<br />

which, he said, "you heard from me,<br />

for John baptized with water, but before<br />

many days you shall be baptized with the<br />

Holy Spirit."<br />

So when they had come together, they<br />

asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore<br />

the kingdom of lsrael?" He said to<br />

them, "it is not for you to know times or<br />

seasons which the Father has fixed by his<br />

own authority. But you shall receive power<br />

when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;<br />

and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem<br />

and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end<br />

of the earth."<br />

GOSPEL READING<br />

JOHN (1:1-17)<br />

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with<br />

God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning<br />

with God; all things were made through him, and without<br />

him was not anything made that was made. In him<br />

was life, and the life was the light of men. The light<br />

shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome<br />

it.<br />

There was a man sent from God, whose name was<br />

John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through<br />

him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.<br />

The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world,<br />

and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own<br />

home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed<br />

in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor<br />

of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.<br />

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have<br />

beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and<br />

cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was<br />

before me.'") And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law<br />

was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.


ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΚΟΠΗ<br />

ΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ (1:1-17)<br />

Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν,<br />

καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος. Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν<br />

Θεόν. Πάντα δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ<br />

ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἓν ὃ γέγονεν. Ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ<br />

ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων. Καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ<br />

φαίνει, καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν.<br />

Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ Θεοῦ, ὄνομα<br />

αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης· οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν, ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες<br />

πιστεύσωσι δι᾽ αὐτοῦ. Οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς, ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός. Ἧν<br />

τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον. Ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ<br />

ἦν, καὶ ὁ κόσμος δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ ὁ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω. Εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθε, καὶ<br />

οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον. Ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα<br />

Θεοῦ γενέσθαι, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων, οὐδὲ ἐκ<br />

θελήματος σαρκός, οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρός, ἀλλ᾽ ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν.<br />

Καὶ ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ,<br />

δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας. Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ<br />

περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγε λέγων· Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον, ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν<br />

μου γέγονεν, ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν. Καὶ ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες<br />

ἐλάβομεν, καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος· ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη, ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ<br />

ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο.


This week’s Sermon<br />

Today we celebrate the Resurrection of our<br />

Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the past<br />

throughout our lives, we have celebrated this<br />

awesome event many times. I pray we have<br />

enlightened our lives every year as we sing<br />

Christ is Risen because that is the purpose of<br />

the incarnation of our Lord. We learn in today’s<br />

Gospel that: “In him was life; and the life was the light of<br />

men” (John 1-4). He came into this world as light penetrates the darkness<br />

and the darkness could not overcome it.<br />

If we chose to sit in darkness however and not embrace His light as<br />

the Gospel proclaims we simply will wither away. That is what we learn today<br />

about two opposing phenomena. The light came into the world and the<br />

darkness could not overcome it but on the other hand, we see that His own<br />

received Him not. As we all have gathered together to experience the light<br />

of His Resurrection let us open the eyes of our hearts that His lifegiving<br />

Light will penetrate into our Souls and make us children of Light. Because<br />

as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become the<br />

sons of God, even to them that believe in His name.


Κύρηγμα της εβδομάδας<br />

Σήμερα γιορτάζουμε την Ανάσταση του<br />

Κυρίου και Σωτήρα μας Ιησού Χριστού. Στο<br />

παρελθόν σε όλη μας τη ζωή, έχουμε γιορτάσει<br />

πολλές φορές αυτό το καταπληκτικό γεγονός.<br />

Προσεύχομαι να έχουμε φωτίσει τη ζωή μας<br />

κάθε χρόνο καθώς τραγουδάμε Χριστός<br />

Ανέστη, γιατί αυτός είναι ο σκοπός της<br />

ενσάρκωσης του Κυρίου μας. Στο σημερινό Ευαγγέλιο μαθαίνουμε ότι: «Σε<br />

αυτόν υπήρχε η ζωή. Και η ζωή ήταν το φως των ανθρώπων» (Ιωάν. 1-<br />

4). Ήρθε σε αυτόν τον κόσμο όπως το φως διαπερνά το σκοτάδι και το<br />

σκοτάδι δεν μπόρεσε να το υπερνικήσει.<br />

Αν όμως επιλέξουμε να παραμείνουμε στο σκοτάδι και να μην<br />

αγκαλιάσουμε το φως Του όπως διακηρύσσει το Ευαγγέλιο, απλώς θα<br />

μαραθούμε. Αυτό είναι που μαθαίνουμε σήμερα για δύο αντίθετα<br />

φαινόμενα. Το φως ήρθε στον κόσμο και το σκοτάδι δεν μπόρεσε να το<br />

υπερνικήσει, αλλά από την άλλη, βλέπουμε ότι οι δικοί Του δεν Τον<br />

δέχτηκαν. Καθώς όλοι έχουμε συγκεντρωθεί για να βιώσουμε το φως της<br />

Ανάστασής Του, ας ανοίξουμε τα μάτια της καρδιάς μας και το ζωογόνο<br />

Φως Του θα διεισδύσει στις Ψυχές μας και θα μας κάνει παιδιά του Φωτός.<br />

Γιατί όσοι τον δέχτηκαν, σε αυτούς έδωσε τη δύναμη να γίνουν υιοί του<br />

Θεού, ακόμη και σε αυτούς που πιστεύουν στο όνομά Του.


Elizabeth the Wonderworker<br />

Saint Elizabeth the Wonderworker was from Constantinople, and<br />

was chosen for the service of God at birth. It was revealed to her<br />

mother that the girl would become a chosen vessel of the Lord<br />

(Acts 9:15).<br />

The parents sent their daughter to a monastery as a child. She<br />

grew up in an atmosphere of fasting and constant prayer, and received<br />

the gift of healing physical and spiritual infirmities.<br />

The sisters chose her to be abbess of the Saints Cosmas and<br />

Damian Monastery. She wore a coarse hairshirt all year round. Her body was chilled in<br />

winter, but her spirit blazed with ardent love for God.<br />

The saint’s asceticism was very strict. For many years she ate only grass and vegetables,<br />

but would not partake of bread, wine, or oil. Many times Saint Elizabeth ate nothing at all<br />

during the forty days of the Great Fast. Imitating the Publican in humility, for three years<br />

she did not lift up her eyes to the heavens, but she looked constantly to God with her spiritual<br />

eyes. At midnight prayers, the saint shone with a heavenly light.<br />

Saint Elizabeth performed many miracles: a vicious serpent was killed by her prayer, she<br />

healed a woman with issue of blood who had been ill for many years, and she cast out unclean<br />

spirits from people. At her tomb many were healed of various illnesses, and the<br />

blind received their sight. Many were cured with just some earth from her grave.<br />

We do not know exactly when Saint Elizabeth lived, but it was probably between the sixth<br />

and ninth centuries.<br />

Questions from the Sunday School Students<br />

In the result of an open mic lesson that took place the past 2 Sundays, our<br />

children have presented us with excellent questions that create a wonderful learning<br />

opportunity, not only for Sunday school, but also for the entire community.<br />

Every Sunday Fr. Anthony will be selecting one question and answering it during<br />

children’s sermon right after the reading of the Gospel during Sunday Liturgies.<br />

1.) Why does it take longer to prepare Communion during Lent? We noticed that<br />

we sang the praises all the way to the end and repeated the slow version at the beginning<br />

until Father Anthony was ready.<br />

2.) Why are the royal doors closed during Lent?<br />

3.) Why does Father wear purple during Lent?<br />

4.) Are there different liturgical prayers during Lent?<br />

5.) Why do we fast from meat and dairy? Why is fish allowed?<br />
