its many dimensions, we offer our students opportunities to work
collaboratively with and for the benefit of the University, and local and
world communities. This collaborative service promotes each student’s
personal growth toward individual excellence. By registering and
supporting a wide variety of clubs and organizations, as well as through
the emphasis placed on leadership training and development, the
University reinforces its commitment to stimulate the intellectual and
personal growth of its students.
The Office of Student Leadership and Community Development is
responsible for the supervision of campus clubs and organizations, New
Student Orientation, the First Year Formation course and Commuter
Student Services. The staff of the Office of Student Leadership and
Community Development also plans leadership development programs
like Leadership Weekend, Fordham University Emerging Leaders (FUEL)
and the Transitions Senior Year Experience Program. The University
values and encourages individual participation in any of the numerous
clubs and organizations currently registered. Opportunities exist for
membership in academic societies, service groups, peer education
committees, cultural organizations, publications and student government.
New Student Orientation
The mission of New Student Orientation is to give an understanding
of the Jesuit tradition of education to new students by facilitating their
transition to the University. The orientation program integrates new
students into the Fordham community and introduces them to new
opportunities with the assistance of current students who serve as
orientation leaders during orientation weekend. Each fall, New Student
Orientation takes place the three days before classes begin. The program
is mandatory for all new first-year students and new transfer students.
First Year Formation
First Year Formation is a pass/fail elective symposium designed to
assist the first-year student in developing the skills that are essential
to college success. The symposium covers such topics as stress and
time management, study skills, managing finances, navigating new
relationships and diversity. This course provides new students with an
opportunity to meet weekly in small groups with a course facilitator and
gain support during their transition to Fordham.
Leadership Development Programs
The FUEL program is designed for freshmen and sophomore students
who have been identified as having leadership potential. Through
workshops, students enhance their leadership skills and foster new ones.
Each fall semester, a Leadership Weekend retreat program is offered to
student leaders to enhance their leadership abilities. The Transitions
Senior Year Experience Program, which is offered to seniors, includes
a variety of topics to assist with the transition from college to the work
world. Practical skills are discussed such as how to manage finances, be
successful at the first job, and how to search for an apartment.
Clubs and Organizations
Fordham undergraduates support and participate in more than 125
clubs and organizations on the Lincoln Center and Rose Hill campuses.
The development of leadership skills and the promotion of responsible
and dedicated leaders for the University community and beyond are
among the primary goals of the Office of Student Leadership and
Community Development. Activities include student-run businesses,
student government, academic committees, programming committees,
cultural committees, media publications, performing clubs, service
clubs and political organizations.
Commuter Student Services
The Office of Commuter Student Services operates out of the Office of
Student Leadership and Community Development. Commuter Student
Services was created to complement the efforts already being made by
the Commuting Students Association to meet the needs of the commuter
population. Our goal is to assess the needs of the commuters and to
evaluate the current services in relation to those needs. The Office of
Student Leadership and Community Development is located on the
Rose Hill campus in McGinley Center, Room 204, (718) 817-4339, and
in the Lowenstein Center Room 408, (212) 636-6250, at the Lincoln
The Office of Campus Ministry fosters the personal growth of all our
spiritual and moral development. Campus Ministry seeks to fashion
individuals with self awareness who will respect and value themselves
and others. We see this happening within a diverse faith community
founded on its growing relationship with God.
Campus Ministry offices and programs support students of all
faiths. We provide opportunities, on and off campus, for worship,
