FROM THE HEAD COACH
Good afternoon everyone and welcome
back to Eppleton, as we prepare to
contest our final Championship game of
the season against Bristol City.
I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the
Bristol City players, coaching staff and
supporters who have made the trip to the
North East this weekend.
I’ll touch first on last week’s final away game
of the campaign as we made the short trip
to Maiden Castle to face Durham. It was
one that we were, in general, disappointed
with – we were slow out of the blocks and
the timings of the three goals in the game
killed us.
The gameplan wasn’t executed the way we
wanted which limited us going forward,
and it was a scrappy game. Durham are an
experienced side, 10 years in the making,
and showed that on the day with a bit more
nous and a bit more fight.
The fact we brought on two 16-year-olds
in Grace Ede and Katy Watson to try and
change the game shows where we are
as a collective for the future – they did
themselves proud when they came on.
But overall, it’s been a successful season,
achieving what we set out in securing our
place in the league to kick on for 2022-23.
We want to finish strongly and not let the
season fizzle out.
Your support throughout the campaign has
been fantastic for us all season long and has
helped bring the community together for
football ahead of an exciting future here.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Hello everyone, and welcome back to
Eppleton for our final match of 2021-22
here against Bristol City.
We feel it’s crucial to finish this season
on a high – one which has been a year of
progression both on and off the pitch,
and one that has really showcased the
talent and potential of many of our
young players.
Firstly speaking after last week’s 3-0
defeat in our last away trip of the
campaign at Durham, we can’t escape
the fact that we were disappointed with
how it went, and that we expected more
from ourselves. We didn’t feel that it was
us last week, especially after working so
hard on a gameplan in training.
Durham came at us with a lot of fight and
determination – at times we matched
that, but not as much as we should have.

We have to learn not to be bullied in
parts of games.
We want to put right the factors that cost
us against Durham, and all focus is now
geared towards that and to achieve a
positive result against a fantastic Bristol
City side.
Reflecting back on the season as a whole,
I’m super-proud of all my teammates
for what we’ve achieved over the past
12 months. We’re safe now and that’s
something to be proud of, but at the
same time we can’t get complacent.
A huge thank you has to go to our
supporters – you have all been a huge
push for us this season, and we want
to go out on a high before an exciting
summer for the club.

MCCATTY ON PROGRESSIVE SEASON
Grace McCatty has assessed
SAFC Ladies’ debut season
back in the FA Women’s
Championship ahead of the
Lasses’ final game of the league
season at Eppleton today
against Bristol City Women.
The defender spoke to safc.com and Red
& White prior to last Sunday’s Wear Derby
clash with her former side Durham,
and reflected on the progression and
consolidation of the 2021-22 campaign.
“I think for us, it has been a journey this
year,” the defender said.
“We set our stall out and we knew
where we wanted to be, and that was
realistically to retain our league status.
We achieved that, so now we’ve found
our feet a bit more and gathered more
consistency.
“We want to finish on a high now and
build ahead of next season.”
Despite the 3-0 defeat at Maiden
Castle last weekend, McCatty explained
the significance of having a healthy
rivalry with Durham, which from all
cylinders helps bring through the best
talent and emphasises women’s football
in the region.
“There is no denying that there is an
occasion to it when we face each other,
and that rivalry is beneficial for both
teams and sets of supporters.
“It’s also huge for women’s football in
this area to have two teams in the second
division on each other’s doorsteps. It
shows how much the game has grown in
the region.”
At 32, McCatty is the most senior player
in a very youthful squad built by Mel
Reay and Steph Libbey – and has
praised the impact of the youth pathway
and the contributions of the Lasses’
younger charges.
“Our young players have developed
fantastically this season, and if they
want to play at the highest level,
experiences like Sunday’s game, its
atmosphere and many other games
this season against seasoned opponents
will really help them.
“This year has really shown the pathway
that the club has worked so hard to
provide, and the girls are taking their
chances and showing they’re capable.”
