CEO’s Message
The challenges we all faced through
the second year of the pandemic made
it clear to us that the world had indeed
changed and that a ‘new normal’ was
far from anything we had experienced
before COVID-19. We bravely
presented a program for the year
hoping that disruptions were a thing of
the past but instead change became
our constant, with a lockdown from
June to October and several short
closures throughout the remainder of
the year.
Despite much being made of the
Federal government’s so called RISE
program, more than 90 per cent
of this funding was diverted to our
friends in the performing arts who
were effectively unable to operate
at all during the lockdowns. The
visual arts, craft and design sector’s
capacity to operate and recover was
underestimated at best and largely
overlooked.
Our resilience was tested but we
were buoyed by the strength of
the creative community and the
broader community who know the
value of creativity. I am grateful to my
small team. Everyone juggled their
work so well during lockdowns and
throughout the year with their family
responsibilities to produce an excellent
program.
Due to COVID-related restrictions
on numbers in the Centre and the
extended lockdown during the year,
it has meant that our visitation was
smaller than normal and event activity
was much reduced. Our COVID-safe
plan enabled us to continue to do
much of what we had planned for the
year in a safe way.
The digital platforms we created in the
previous year were used to produce
new fully digital content including a
podcast. The first series of the podcast
Object: stories of design and craft was
released and has been listened to by
more than 5000 people globally. The
second series is in production for
2022.
In February we partnered with the
Indigenous Jewellery Project (IJP)
on a workshop on Country with
Gumbayngirr artists to produce a suite
of jewellery that was sold at year end
exclusively through Object Shop. This
professional development opportunity
for nine artists was a huge privilege to
deliver and we are delighted to have
worked with the artists and IJP again
on this ongoing series of workshops
and retail outcomes.
In April and May, with a hopeful break
in COVID restrictions, we presented
a very successful series of six weekly
design history lectures that were fully
subscribed. The exhibition program
presented some fine exhibitions
including the work of Sydney artist
Anita Larkin, Sydney textile collective
Untethered Fibre Artists and our own
ADC On Tour exhibition Made/Worn:
Australian Contemporary Jewellery
delayed due to COVID in 2020.
Our 5th birthday iteration of the
Sydney Craft Week Festival pivoted
to the Digital Edition in October and
provided a welcome focus coming
to the end of the long period of
lockdown.
Two exhibitions were presented over
the summer months: Happy objects
celebrating the joy and stories in the
objects we own; and a project with
UNSW and Kyushu University, Japan on
the architectural genius of Japanese
architect Shoei Yoh. In a project
funded by City of Sydney, with our
neighbours Griffin Theatre Company
we commissioned, co-produced and
presented a new Australian work of
theatre Window, Cricket Bat by Hilary
Bell which had seven performances
in the Centre during Sydney Festival
2022.
Four exhibitions toured nationally
through ADC On Tour with some
adjustments for COVID-19.
Many thanks to those we have worked
with throughout the year, from the
creative practitioners to our volunteer
board and partners and supporters.
I firmly believe we need to generate
more support for all creative
practitioners. A recognition of the
importance of the arts should be high
on the agenda of those contending
upcoming elections.

Chair’s Message
Throughout 2021 the Australian Design
Centre Board was proud to support
the CEO and her team in the work that
they do. The Board is united in its view
that ADC finished 2021 in excellent
shape having delivered a full suite of
activity pivoting to support makers
and designers in every way despite
the extended lockdown from June to
October. Supporting 743 artists and
$120,000 in self-generated (non-grant)
income for artists is a huge impact.
I thank the directors on the ADC Board,
Louise Ingram, Gregory Dean, Andrew
Simpson, Frank Howarth, Jenny Green
and Bridget Kennedy and CEO and
Artistic Director Lisa Cahill and her
team for the collegiate, intelligent
and sensible approach to ensuring a
successful 2021.
We are immensely grateful for the
support of the creative collaborators,
partners, donors, volunteers and
audiences who have supported ADC
this year.
We are all excited about what is ahead
for 2022.

Come To Me Without A Word
4 February – 20 March 2021
Anita Johnson Larkin
This first exhibition for the year set the tone for 2021, beginning a dialogue
about the important role objects play in our lives, a conversation that featured
throughout this year’s program.
Anita Johnson Larkin is a NSW artist who works in sculpture and textiles. For this
exhibition she considered objects as storytellers - salvaged domestic objects
were re-associated with the human body and gestures of repair give those
objects poetic qualities. The strong focus on sculpture using found objects and
the emotional nature of this exhibition made it unique within the 2021 program.
First exhibited at Wollongong Art Gallery and selected by ADC Director Lisa Cahill
to be shown at the ADC, this exhibition established strong cross-institutional
relationships, strengthening industry support and a spirit of sharing.
Audiences were moved by Larkin’s emotive textile objects, and their relationship
with bodies and space. Associated events included a musical performance, online
conversations and a mini documentary.

The exhibition presented the diverse techniques, work and ideas of local NSW
based textile collective Untethered Fibre Artists Inc. Founded in 2014, Untethered
Fibre Artists Inc. produce and exhibit art using fibre and textile materials and
processes. Recognising that creating artworks using fibre is often time consuming
and driven by a shared desire to exhibit their works, the group formed with the
aim to exhibit their work annually.
Eighteen artists were included and responded to the theme ‘signatures’ in
this, their annual show, presenting a variety of techniques and mediums. Many
reflected the current climate and recent events exploring pandemic, bushfires,
environmental concerns and the influence of technology, adding an urgency to
the exhibition.
Associated artists talks and workshops added value to the experience for the
audience.

From intimate pieces to large scale works, the contemporary jewellery in Made/
Worn: Australian Contemporary Jewellery explores the act of making and how
jewellery is worn on the body, telling stories that start with the artist and continue
through the life of the object worn or experienced, creating new resonances
with owners into the future. Spanning a wide range of materials, techniques and
meanings, the works on display were playful, intricate, conceptual, personal, and
political. The artists also engaged with themes of place, sustainability in materials
and identity.
Celebrating diversity and inclusivity, this ADC On Tour exhibition includes the work
of 22 artists working in contemporary jewellery in Australia today.
Curated by Lisa Cahill with a curatorium including Kevin Murray, Penny Craswell,
Melinda Young and Margaret Hancock Davis, the exhibition was presented at ADC
after the initial launch in 2020 was delayed due to COVID-19.

Endangered + Extinct
20 May – 24 June 2021
Natalie Rosin
This exhibition focused on the work of ceramic artist Natalie Rosin. Natalie is an
architecture graduate and ceramicist practicing in Sydney, whose work involves
the intersection, conflict and dialogue between these disciplines. Her sculptures
aim to test invisible concepts, in search for the physical properties of a thought
and its translation into a concrete image.
This body of work celebrated the sculptural properties observed in architecture
while also introducing the concept of an ‘endangered’ or ‘extinct’ place. The
buildings she recreated in rough clay were either under threat of demolition or
had been demolished, adding a relevant and recognisable topic for the audiences.
Robust research associated with each building added to the exhibition’s appeal.

2021 marked the 21st edition of the design industry’s much anticipated annual
program WORKSHOPPED21 - the very best in new Australian furniture lighting and
object design by emerging and established designers.
Taking a big step into the future contemplating design for life in a post-pandemic
world, this year’s entrants responded to the question: What does this future
look like in object, furniture and lighting design? Designers considered the
Australian design identity, circular design principles, bioplastics, salvaged and
waste materials, space saving, multifunction and accessible design. They delivered
designs that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, innovative, sustainable and long
lasting - the ingredients of future design for our living and workplaces.
Due to the COVID situation in Sydney all works were included into a digital
presentation on ADC’s webpage supported by promotion on social media.

Happy objects was an exhibition exploring the value of objects and appreciating
the beauty and stories around them. We asked 21 people from various
backgrounds and professions to share with us a ‘happy object’ and tell us the
story about the object.
Happy objects was curated and designed by Stephen Goddard with Lisa Cahill.
Happy objects celebrates our commitment to give objects a long life, appreciate
their beauty and stories, and embrace their function.
Window Cricket Bat 2021
Alongside Happy objects, ADC partnered with Griffin Theatre Company to create
a new work of theatre that would give our collective audiences a new experience.
With opportunities for performing artists very limited during the pandemic this
was also a great chance to commission a new play providing work for a writer,
actor and director.
Playwright Hilary Bell was commissioned to write the play in mid-2021. Her new
work Window, Cricket Bat directed by Jennifer Rani and performed by Lucia
Mastrantone, was performed over seven nights at Australian Design Centre for
Sydney Festival 2022.
Although the Omicron wave meant that audiences numbers were capped to 20
each night, both ADC and Griffin were delighted with the response to this COVIDsafe
production.
While this may lead to future collaborations, for now both organisations are
continuing to cross-promote events to help to continue to reach a wider
audience for design, craft and theatre.

Presented by ADC, Revisiting Shoei Yoh is an exhibition by the University of New
South Wales and Kyushu University that draws from the archive of Japanese
architect and late 20th century pioneer of digital design, Shoei Yoh.
The exhibition traces a trajectory of experimental design practice across five key
buildings completed by Yoh between 1979 to 1994. This includes the formally bold
Kinoshita Clinic in Fukuoka, Japan (1979) that demonstrates Shoei’s early interest in
material technology.
The exhibition showcased the work of Shoei Yoh through archival architectural
drawings and photographs as well as new 3D scanned animations and digitally
fabricated parametric architectural models. It celebrated the launch of the online
Shoei Yoh Archive that hosts a repository of newly digitised archival assets in an
immersive 3D spatial environment developed from 3D scans of the Naiju
Community Centre in Fukuoka, Japan.
Films from Obsessed: Compelled to make
18 November 2021 – 8 January 2022
ADC On Tour exhibition Obsessed: Compelled to make toured across Australia
from 2018. A selection of films from the exhibition was shown in the Centre over
summer.
The films, made for the exhibition by Angus Lee Forbes, are about the work of the
artist beyond the finished object. They provide a unique opportunity to go behind
the scenes to discover material and process and unravel what compels each
maker to do what they do in their creative spaces. All the films are available on the
website australiandesigncentre.com

each, enabling connections with designers,
students and audiences with its focus on
fashion and the future. There was strong
engagement with this exhibition and event,
and an ongoing relationship initiated with
the Fashion and Textiles department.
Gingham All You’ve Got:
Eloise Rapp
25 March – 13 May 2021
This exhibition re-imagined the humble
checked work shirt as a textile asset of
multiple uses.
Eloise is a textile designer and educator.
Through her design studio, Push
Pull Textiles, she applies the wisdom
of traditional textile methods and
philosophies to contemporary challenges in
design and manufacturing.
This exhibition was a great opportunity to
focus on sustainable textiles and present a
topical artist talk, with content captured for
an Object Digital article.
Murmuration - A Pliable
Formation: Windowsmiths
20 May – 30 September 2021
Windowsmiths is three artists, Fiona Meller,
Marcia Swaby and Helen Wyatt, who apply the
traditional skills and tools of silversmithing to
their artistic practice. The installation brings
focus to standard tools used by jewellers. It is
also an improvisation on shape and function
reminding us of ordinary technologies driven by
the body and their transformative nature.
Apothecary Now! Sassy Park
18 November 2021 – 25 January 2022
A very timely exhibition inspired by
Renaissance apothecary jars (or albarellos),
Sassy Park’s pots use similar maiolica
glaze techniques and motifs, linking the
current COVID-19 pandemic to history.
The hand painted pots reflect the recent
preoccupation with newly developed
pharmaceutical vaccines, controversial
cures and pandemic messaging.

Sydney Craft Week Festival
‘The Digital Edition’
8 October - 17 October 2021
This year was the 5th annual Sydney Craft Week. The festival once again felt the
effects of COVID-19, pivoting to ‘The Digital Edition’ within the extended Sydney
lockdown. While celebration in the physical sense was not possible, events were
hosted digitally with some exhibitions viewable from the street through gallery
windows. The festival had 52 events, including 21 workshops, 16 exhibitions, 5
talks, a podcast launch, several short film projects and retail events, with many
participants taking the opportunity to develop their engagement further in the
digital space.
A Sydney Craft Week special event was held in May to support the call for
event entries. Over 150 people attended the craft tradeshow demonstrating
and promoting Sydney’s small creative studios and makerspaces that included
jewellery, textiles, ceramics, textiles and woodwork. Representing studios include:
Bobbin & Ink, The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre, The Bench, MakerSpace and
Co, SquarePeg Studio, ATASDA (Australian Textile and Surface Design Association).
The 2021 theme Craft Values (or the value of craft) considered the changing
pandemic conditions, “While we would love to be celebrating this festival right
across Sydney as we have every year since 2017, it is a testament to the makers,
the galleries, the people and the organisations who have worked very hard to
create digital experiences that we can all enjoy at home or on a walk in our
neighbourhoods. The creative capacity of every person involved in this year’s
festival is extraordinary. Their resilience and determination ensures that we can
have a festival in the midst of a long lockdown”.
This community led program is the only festival in Sydney dedicated to making by
hand.

First Nations Programs
First Nations craft and design continues to be central to Australian Design
Centre’s creative program. As the oldest continuous living culture in the world,
our role supporting First Nations artists, and creating opportunities for audiences
Australia-wide to experience and engage with Indigenous culture, is manifestly
important in our programming.
First Nations artists participate across programming and through ongoing
research projects and specific initiatives.
A platform for First Nations programs continues to be the local cultural landmark
on Gadigal Land - the Gadigal mural.
The Bawrrungga Project
Gumbayngirr artists worked on country in the mid-north coast town of Bowraville
to develop and complete a body of contemporary jewellery which was sold
exclusively through Object Shop.
The professional workshop was attended by nine local artists who were
introduced to jewellery making techniques including saw piercing, metal texturing,
heat patination, cold-joining, making jewellery findings and air-dry clay beads,
knotting and cordage, all with a focus on working with natural materials including
locally collected native timber and shells.
This is the third Indigenous Jewellery Project (IJP) workshop that Australian Design
Centre has produced in partnership with IJP founding curator Emily McCulloch
Childs and leading contemporary jeweller Melinda Young.
First Nations Creative Producer
Futhering our successful experiences with the role of First Nation Creative
Producer in 2018 and 2019, we plan to again fill this role in 2022 with funding from
Create NSW.

Object Shop and Retail Events
Object Shop is the Sydney destination to buy hand-made local work by designers
and craftspeople. The volume of work sold and size of the retail footprint have
both increased substantially year on year.
Work sold includes a mix of ceramics, glass, textiles, jewellery, homewares, cards,
kits and publications, including magazines as well as ADC’s own publications. ADC
supports diverse makers, stocking work by Indigenous makers and artists such as
Tjanpi Desert Weavers, Baluk Arts and artists with an intellectual disability through
Studio A. Object Shop also features work sold in collaboration with our ACDC
partners JamFactory and Australian Tapestry Workshop.
During the 2021 lockdown all sale
commissions were waived to support
makers unable to actively sell their
work in this period.
Australian Design Centre and Little
National Hotel Sydney have joined
forces to make a capsule collection
of Australian craft and design objects
from Object Shop available in a curated
cabinet at the hotel in Sydney’s CBD.
This is a great opportunity to make
Australian handmade work available to
travellers and further promote Object
Shop. The extensive lockdown in 2021
will extend this pilot to end 2022.

Digital Programs
Australian Design Centre uses digital programs to extend beyond the gallery
space. In 2021, as a result of COVID-19 shutdowns and closures, we ramped up our
digital activity to reach audiences and engage with makers across the country to
keep our community connected.
Websites
Australian Design Centre operates two websites: australiandesigncentre.com
and sydneycraftweek.com for the annual Sydney Craft Week Festival. In 2021 we
completed a major project to update and refresh both sites. The new platform
allows greater functionality and flexibility in delivery along with improving usability
and accessibility for our audience.
Object Digital
Object Digital is a digital publishing and events initiative that sits within our
website and is part of our ongoing research into diverse topic areas. Object Digital
includes content we create and we republish important and interesting content
created by others in the field giving access for our audiences to critical writing
and broad and diverse subject matter.
events reached 115,500 people across the year.
International
ADC participated for the second time in Create Day, organised by London Craft
Week presenting two of films reaching estimated audiences of 190,000 people
globally.
ADC On Tour exhibition Made/Worn: Australian Contemporary Jewellery

publications Living Treasures Masters of Australia Craft were featured in the 60th
Anniversary Korea Craft & Design Foundation (KCDF) in Korea.
Podcast
ADC launched the first series of the podcast Object: stories of design and craft in
2021. The series of conversations between Lisa Cahill and Australia’s masters of
craft was a highly successful first foray into digital programing. This project was
funded by Australia Council for the Arts and produced by Jane Curtis. The project
has been positively received by the community and is available on all major
podcast players.
Object Book Group
Started in March 2021 as an initiative to indulge our love of reading about craft,
design, artists and creativity and to engage the creative community to talk with
each other and us about the books offered. There have been nine books on the
monthly reading list so far.
Films
We use Vimeo for our film content and also embed the films we produce into our
website and across social channels.
Object Shop Online
In 2021 we rebuilt our online shop platform. This enabled increased sales to
continue to support makers during the pandemic.
Social Media
The last three years have seen rapid growth in our social media. ADC’s Instagram
