Sydney Craft Week Festival
‘The Digital Edition’

This year was the 5th annual Sydney Craft Week. The festival once again felt the
effects of COVID-19, pivoting to ‘The Digital Edition’ within the extended Sydney
lockdown. While celebration in the physical sense was not possible, events were
hosted digitally with some exhibitions viewable from the street through gallery
windows. The festival had 52 events, including 21 workshops, 16 exhibitions, 5
talks, a podcast launch, several short film projects and retail events, with many
participants taking the opportunity to develop their engagement further in the
digital space.
A Sydney Craft Week special event was held in May to support the call for
event entries. Over 150 people attended the craft tradeshow demonstrating
and promoting Sydney’s small creative studios and makerspaces that included
jewellery, textiles, ceramics, textiles and woodwork. Representing studios include:
Bobbin & Ink, The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre, The Bench, MakerSpace and
Co, SquarePeg Studio, ATASDA (Australian Textile and Surface Design Association).
The 2021 theme Craft Values (or the value of craft) considered the changing
pandemic conditions, “While we would love to be celebrating this festival right
across Sydney as we have every year since 2017, it is a testament to the makers,
the galleries, the people and the organisations who have worked very hard to
create digital experiences that we can all enjoy at home or on a walk in our
neighbourhoods. The creative capacity of every person involved in this year’s
festival is extraordinary. Their resilience and determination ensures that we can
have a festival in the midst of a long lockdown”.
This community led program is the only festival in Sydney dedicated to making by
hand.
