Inspiring Futures

GOES BACK TO THE FUTURE

DEHWELANS DHE’N TERMYN A DHEU

Golowan is back! After two years of challenging times

those are the words that everyone has been waiting

to hear – and while it is tempting to employ phrases

such as “Golowan is back with a bang” we fully

appreciate that to a local community starved of the

jewel in its summer crown for two lean years, “back”

will probably be quite enough.

Nevertheless, as it celebrates its 32nd year there’s

an irresistible feeling of optimism and our theme

this year – “Golowan goes Back to the Future” –

reflects a pride in all that this wonderful Festival

has achieved and a passion for all the glorious

memories yet to be created.

In 2020 and 2021 we kept the flame alive with

online events, a memorable “30 Years of Golowan”

exhibition and a safely stewarded static display in

Morrab Gardens on Mazey Day last year of all the

amazing images that would have been paraded

through the town – had circumstances permitted.

Nothing, however, beats the real thing and 2022 will

see the return of all the wonderful elements that make

Golowan one of the best loved community festivals

in the country. You can look forward to the colourful,

vibrant parades on Mazey Day, browse the hundreds

of food and craft stalls, marvel at the abundance

of local musical talent on the streets, down by the

harbour and in the Marquee, enjoy the fair on the

Quay and participate in the anarchic mayhem of the

election of the Mock Mayor.

Welcome! Dynnargh!

New features will include a Youth Music Stage

showcasing Penzance’s young musical talent – in

the Methodist Chapel Yard on Mazey Day and on the

Promenade on Quay Fair Day, a Roller Disco on the

Prom on Sunday and a series of community workshops

designed to encourage creative participation.

None of this would be possible without the help of our

partners, sponsors, and volunteers. We are grateful for

the support of Penzance Council, HeadStart Kernow,

Truro & Penwith College, Tresorys, the Arts Council and

the National Lottery Community Fund. We continue to

work closely with our partners at Penzance BID, Jubilee

Pool, and Plastic Free Penzance – with whom we

continue to strive to ensure that Golowan remains one

of the greenest festivals around.

Within the team no-one has been more supportive than

Linda McKechnie whose input has been invaluable over

the past ten years. A former Festival Director and key

member of the Golowan team, Linda has worked behind

the scenes to ensure that the elements – including the

fabulous street parades – that make this Festival so

special could take place. Golowan would not have been

Golowan without Linda and, as she now moves on to a

volunteer role for 2022, everyone connected with the

organisation of the Golowan Festival would like to say a

massive thank you!

Golowan is back – back for the whole community, back

with the help of the whole community.

To all who have made this possible – thank you!

To everyone – enjoy yourselves!

The Golowan Team 2022

Three things you can do at Golowan

to reduce throwaway plastic

Golowan works closely with Plastic Free Penzance to reduce the impact

of single-use plastic at the festival. Our focus is Refill, Reuse and Rethink,

building on the great foundations the event laid pre-Covid to stop plastic

pollution at source, and protect the ocean.

Here’s three things you can do to help:

1. Bring a Refill Water Bottle

Look out for festival refill points and check out the Refill PZ

map for businesses who are happy to top you up

2. Remember your Festival Cup

Dig out your Golowan cup and refill at venues across town to save tens

of thousands of single use plastic cups being used

3. Take Rubbish Home

Bins and recycling are provided, but they can get full. We’d love

for people to take rubbish home if that happens.

Look out for Plastic Free PZ volunteers doing

plastic picks on the prom during the event

and check us out on social media for more

festival tips

Golowan is ‘Going Back to the Future’ and

starting its two weeks of festivities from

the Friday the 10th of June, by working

closely with Truro & Penwith College and

local artists to deliver a programme of

FREE workshops.

We challenge Penzance community to

ready itself for the return to festivities and

Mazey Day madness by gathering your

creativity and exploring workshops of

dance, music, masks, headdresses, flags,

lanterns, wicker boats and more!

Look for the Golowan Community

Workshops fliers with: ‘What; Where;

When; and How’, because you already

know ‘Why’ at the beginning of June or

check our social media platforms at:

www.golowanfestival.org

Facebook: Golowan Official

Twitter: @GolowanFestival

We look forward to seeing your creations on Mazey Weekend!!

Volunteers

By giving their precious time Golowan volunteers pay an important contribution to

the Penzance community. We cannot deliver the Festival without them! Golowan

volunteers help bring our community together in celebration and Mazey madness

and make Penzance a place where we love to live. With all that in mind, we wish to

thank our beautiful volunteers and ever friendly, helpful stewards, who advise and

guide our community during Penzance’s glorious summer Festival.

If you want to make a real difference to Golowan in 2022

then please do get in touch!

Golowan has need of volunteers between Friday 17th and Sunday 26th June – but

especially between the long weekend of Thursday 23rd (Mock Mayor Elections),

Friday 24th (Golowan Fireworks), Saturday 25th (Mazey Day Parades) and Sunday

26th June (Quay Fair Day).

Volunteer roles we need to fill are:

• Stewarding the processions

• Collecting donations

• Meeting & greeting

• Litter picking

• Giving out water during the

processions

8

• Running the Golowan pop-up shop

and stall

• The Golowan Green Brigade who

wake up early on Mazey morning

to decorate Market Jew Street and

St Johns Hall with greenery and

bunting for the Mazey Day Parades

• And more!

Contact us by email: golowan@hotmail.co.uk or by

Phone: 01736 369686 and be part of the best community

event in the south-west.

Giving up just three hours of your time would be so helpful

and as a thank you every volunteer receives a Golowan

T-shirt, refreshments, and the offer of a reduced-price ticket to

Penlee Park Theatre and the offer of a ticket to a local event.

Volunteer refreshments are kindly sponsored by Mr. Hugh Scantlebury.

Les Rowe

Les Rowe was a true Cornwall ‘character’.

The St. Buryan born ex-Geevor tin miner,

local publican, singer, stalwart of the

Golowan Band and loyal supporter of the

Golowan Festival for many years, passed

away in September. He left memories that

will linger for ever and is much missed by

all who were lucky enough to know him.

MAZEY AND QUAY FAIR DAY ENTERTAINMENT

DIDHAN DEDHYOW MAZEY HA FER AN KAY

Golowan is back….so once more the streets of Penzance will

be filled with music all over Mazey Weekend.

On MAZEY DAY, Greenmarket Car Park will again be transformed into

‘Festival Square’ where mouth-watering food stalls share the bustling space

with the Folk Stage which - up against the back of the Acorn Theatre – will

host a variety of music, dance, and song all day from 10 am.

Between parades local school and youth bands will entertain a packed

Market Jew Street by the Sir Humphry Davy statue and local bands and

solo artists will perform throughout the town at venues including Queen’s

Square (outside the Co-op), the Acorn Theatre steps and up and down

Causewayhead.

New this year will be a Youth Music Stage highlighting Penzance’s array of

young musical talent on the forecourt of the Methodist Chapel in the heart

of busy Chapel Street and Morrab Gardens will again be the focus for a

fabulous family day with music and entertainment for all ages centred on the

bandstand throughout the day while down by the Dock Inn and the Dolphin

a lively session of rock music will fill the air till late afternoon.

QUAY FAIR DAY sees most of the action move

to the harbourside and our superbly renovated

promenade with the Folk Stage setting up on

South Quay and – as in Festival Square – delivering another daylong

repertoire of musical delights while the Youth Music Stage will

transfer to the Prom across from Alexandra Gardens just along from

– new for 2022 – a lively Roller Disco.

Local artists will be performing at sites along the Quay near the

Boatshed and in the Jubilee Pool and once again the Golowan

Youth Space will provide fun, competitions and entertainment at

Wherrytown Skate Park. Up in Morrab Gardens the bandstand will

again host an afternoon of local musical talent and, of course, next

to all the fun of the Quay Fair, the Golowan Marquee in St Anthony’s

Car Park will host a star-studded cavalcade of musical entertainment

throughout the weekend.

Along with a host of old favourites you can look forward to a

tantalising taste of new talent including the likes of Work’us, The Red

Apple Honeys, Jonah’s Lift, Toni, Jackson’s Claret, and many others.

Full details of Mazey Weekend Music performers

and venues will be included in the Weekend

Brochure and on the Golowan Festival website.

BRUCE INGRAM @ THE PICTURE

ROOM, NEWLYN ART GALLERY

Entry: Standard annual pass £7 (includes £1

giftable donation) or Penwith annual pass £4

(includes £1 giftable donation) 10am to 5pm

The title of the exhibition acknowledges

the element of chance and spontaneity

that Ingram embraces whilst physically

constructing his collaged work through the

attachment and folding of papers, creating

irregular and unexpected supports to

further employ, paint, and collage. In larger

works these surfaces become sculptural,

with papers layered to create rich surfaces

which are ripped and constructed revealing

layers between. Ingram chooses to attach

individual pieces of papers with a handheld

stapler, the instantaneous nature of

the staple allowing quick decision making

and an immediate attachment. As surfaces

are built, they are also dismantled and

collapsed, rotated, and joined together,

with outcomes shifting between the wall

and floor of the studio.
