Clear SkiesWelcome to clear skies, a quick summaryof night sky items for the month that youcan look for from your garden or a suitablewindow.What can be seen in the night sky in themiddle of summer? With the long brightevenings, there doesn’t seem to be muchabout, so let me introduce you to theSummer Triangle. As twilight deepens, youshould see a lone star due east about 45degrees up, that is Vega. From here trackleft and down a little to another fainter starDeneb. Then quite some distance to thesouth (below Vega) you should find a thirdstar Altair. These three stars comprise thesummer triangle and once the sky iscompletely dark you may notice the milkyway running through the centre of it.Turning round to the north around midsummer,still in the deep twilight, you maysee some thin pearly white clouds, likecirrus clouds hovering over the northernhorizon. These are noctilucent clouds andare very high clouds that can only be seen atthe end of twilight when the summer sun isshining on them from below the horizon.Remember that they are bluely white, notgrey.The International Space Station is passingover us in the early morning hours for mostof June and early July. The first pass that willbe visible is on 11 th July around 11.10pmand also on the 13 th , 15 th and 17 th . On the12 th July the pass is around 10.25pm andalso on the 14 th , 16 th , 18 th and 20 th .There is a local astronomical society in thearea, and they operate the observatory onthe top of Toothill.
