Culture, Eurovision &the Jubilee28Dear All, can it be May already? But yes, it is!And, this morning, I am re-writing my articleafter the United Kingdom coming second toUkraine in the Eurovision Song Contest aftermany years in the wilderness! Like manyothers, I stayed up to see the vote, and,whilst Ukraine was most deserving of its firstplace, the UK’s singer, Sam Ryder, made theUK proud with his Space Man song. I alwaysthink the Eurovision Song Contest is a greatforum to learn about people, culture andtraditions, and the Ukraine entry was noexception, with a blend of traditionalUkrainian folk song and modern hip hop.So, on the subject of celebrating culture, asmy original article intended, I recentlyattended Hampshire County Council’sChairman’s Platinum Jubilee Concert at theAnvil in Basingstoke, where the countyYouth Jazz Band, Orchestras, Choir andother ensembles treated us to a superprogramme of music. If you have neverheard Hampshire’s young musicians playyou are missing something special, socontact Hampshire Music Service to find outhow to get tickets for upcomingperformances. And if your youngsters areinterested, get them involved inHampshire’s music making opportunitiesthrough HMS. hants.gov.uk/educationandlearning/hampshiremusicI also recently visited Royal Victoria CountryPark in Netley with my husband. What alovely day we had. Visiting the RoyalVictoria Chapel building which is the lastremaining part of the old MemorialHospital, founded by Queen Victoria andcaring for the wounded soldiers of WorldWars I and II. There are also some fabulousrecreational facilities for families, includingthe play park areas, train rides and cafes. Assummer arrives, make a plan to visit RoyalVictoria or one of Hampshire’s othercountry parks or attractions. The little steamtrains that take you around Royal VictoriaCountry Park are run by volunteers - butthey are short of drivers. HCA UpdateHi everyone, well the HCA have been very busy over the last few months not onlyhosting regular bingo nights but also a very successful Scavenger Hunt around Hordlewhich provided great entertainment for the many who participated.Bar and Café updateAs you may have noticed if you have been up to the recreation ground recently, thework on the pavilion is in full swing and we are hoping to be nearing completion early/mid-June. Once open we are intending that the café and bar will provide a place for allmembers of the community to frequent. Soon we will be launching a membership tothe HCA which will not only provide a sense of belonging to the Association but willprovide a number of discounts including on hall hire, HCA events and beveragespurchased on the premises. Please keep a close eye on our notice boards, facebookpage and website for updates.Forthcoming eventsBingo nights are being held regularly on selected Saturday nights.Quiz nights will be coming back on a regular basis soon.Big Jubilee Party In the ParkPlease put Sunday 5 th June in your diary, it’s going to be a great day, if you came to ourlast Party in the Park, you would know what I mean. A great day for all ages with music,bar, a variety of food stalls and sun (hopefully).
