ASPECTS OF LYMINGTONIn a regular series Aspects of Lymington, RayMayes provides a miscellany of views ofLymington – its people, buildings, history anddevelopment, and relationship to the coast andthe New Forest. This month he poses thequestion - is Lymington in danger of losing anhistoric viewpoint?Sir Harry and his MonumentOur little Georgian town of Lymington has twoiconic viewpoints.The familiar onelooks west up thegently sloping HighStreet towards theParish Church ofSt. Thomas with itsimposing towerand cupola.Look in the other direction, eastward downhillover Lymington River and amongst the treesabove the Walhampton foreshore, lies theWalhampton Monument - a 76ft (23m) graniteobelisk commemorating the life of Admiral SirHarry Burrard Neale.16 September 2015 marked the 250 thanniversary of the birth of Harry James Burrard,as he was christened. After a glittering navalcareer and his death in 1840, the monument atWalhampton was erected in his memory,funded by appreciative public subscription.However, over the years the monumentdeteriorated, becoming neglected andovergrown; a New Forest naval hero faded inhistory and became forgotten.Fortunately, a small band of “Friends of SirHarry” (part of the Lymington Society – thetown’s civic society) recently determined torestore the Walhampton site and resurrect theAdmiral’s memory. Today, they have achievedthese objectives magnificently, restoring thewhole site to its former glory. On a recentbeautiful sunny day, it was clear to me that thewhole site has become attractive again. Thewhole Grade II* structure has been carefullyrestored and site landscaping has beencomprehensively achieved by clearingovergrown surroundings.Interpretation signboards have done much to re-establish the story and reputation of our navalhero, making the monument an interestingplace to visit. It is an attraction for both NewForest residents and visitorsalike. The monument (at SO415SE) is close to Walhamptonschool in Monument Lane. FromLymington it is an easy walkacross the river to Undershore Road.Becoming Sir HarryThe story of the life and times of Admiral SirHarry Burrard Neale (1765-1840) is aninteresting one.An early resident of Walhampton House nowthe school nearby, Harry Burrard (as he wasthen known) inherited the baronetcy ofWalhampton from his uncle, the first baronet, in1791. On his marriage to Grace Elizabeth Nealeon 15 April 1795, Sir Harry added his wife’smaiden name ‘Neale’ as a condition of becomingheir to Robert Neale of Shaw House, Melksham.Sir Harry Burrard Neale had a lifetime of Navaland civic achievement and was to become apolitician, both local and national. By the age 30,he was in command of HMS San Fiorenzo and in1797 achieved national recognition helping toresolve the great naval mutiny at the Noreanchorage, in the Thames estuary.Sir Harry had an active political life Lymington,including becoming mayor and also MP ofLymington for four periods before and after theReform Act between 1790 and 1835. Heretained the favour of the monarch, particularlyafter the naval mutiny at the Nore, and onseveral occasions entertained George III atWalhampton. He maintained a close friendshipwith the King, becoming Groom to theBedchamber.36Is Lymington in danger of losing this iconicviewpoint?The Burrard Neale Monument site represents alittle piece of Lymington across the river in theparish of Boldre.
