In April and May 2002, this scheme has been used <strong>in</strong> discussions among several<br />
participants of the Concerted Action Mycotocha<strong>in</strong> together with other scientists from all<br />
over Europe. They have expressed their concern about the mycotox<strong>in</strong> problem of food <strong>in</strong><br />
general (so not only produced by <strong>Fusarium</strong> spp.). and have identified research questions.<br />
These discussions resulted <strong>in</strong> the preparation of an Expression of Interest entitled ‘Food<br />
safety and quality: An <strong>in</strong>tegrated European management system for <strong>mycotox<strong>in</strong>s</strong> <strong>in</strong> food<br />
and feed’ by N. Magan, Cranfield University, United K<strong>in</strong>gdom, and others, and has been<br />
submitted to the European Committee. The overall objective is to m<strong>in</strong>imise consumer<br />
exposure to <strong>mycotox<strong>in</strong>s</strong> through development of <strong>in</strong>novative, qualitative and reasoned<br />
approaches to <strong>in</strong>tegrated management systems <strong>in</strong> the food cha<strong>in</strong>. It addresses all research<br />
questions mentioned earlier by follow<strong>in</strong>g the cha<strong>in</strong>-wide approach. Submission of such<br />
Expressions of Interest aga<strong>in</strong> underl<strong>in</strong>e the need for further research <strong>in</strong> the area of<br />
<strong>mycotox<strong>in</strong>s</strong>.<br />
