OUTGOING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
“Women are going to form a chain, a greater sisterhood
than the world has ever known.”
– Nellie McClung
As much as I love the traditional “Wear Red” photo at
the Holiday Party, the WWBA Annual Dinner is my favorite
event of the year. After the date is chosen, the
guest list is solidified, and the invitations are printed,
the Annual Dinner Committee gathers for what’s known
as the “Stuffing Meeting.” We congregate at the home
of one of our Past Presidents, eat far too much, and
assemble the invitations for mailing – a few women fold,
a few women organize, a few women stuff, a few women
seal, and a few women stamp. If you’ve seen our board trying to gather for photos,
you will have heard the phrase “like herding cats” lovingly bandied about, but the
Stuffing Meeting is a thing of wonder. Our Committee efficiently creates their
assembly line, squeezing new members in between veterans at the dining room
table, sharing WWBA history as I imagine folk lore was once passed down around a
camp fire.
The next event is the “Seating Meeting,” where the Committee works magic to
create your table assignments, taking into account attendees’ submitted preferences,
legal practice areas, and known friendships and rivalries (you’re welcome, by
the way). Once again, our more seasoned Committee members suggest proper
table pairings, warn us about potential seating errors, and teach us what they believe
we must know. The newer participants add their own experiences to the blend,
suggesting new methods and sharing their unique expertise.
This is the beauty of the WWBA – generations, young and, well, less young,
passionate about our organization and devoted to its mission, respectful of the
significance of history while remaining dedicated to improvement. Each year, the
current WWBA President is dubbed “Queen,” and she does her best for the next
twelve months to lead this cherished organization. She is guided by those Queens
who came before her, who encourage and support her and serve as bright benchmarks
for her own successes. Each President’s year of reign has its own challenges,
and I have certainly felt the stress of them during mine. But, as the song goes, “I get
by with a little help from my friends.” So, to all those sitting in this beautiful room
tonight – WWBA members, Board members, Executive Committee members, Past
Queens, and in a few short moments when we pass the torch again, the current
Queen of the WWBA – thank you. I am so very grateful to be a link in this chain of
sisterhood, and I couldn’t be prouder to stand with my Past Presidents as we
continue the crucial work of the WWBA with the generations to come.

INCOMING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As lawyers, many of us if not all of us, have
at one point or another had to deliver an opening
statement – the at times daunting yet crucial
moment to set forth what the case is about; what
the evidence will show; and what theme will continue
through summation. As I now deliver to
you all my opening statement, I submit Ladies
and Gentlemen, that my installation as President
of the Westchester Women’s Bar Association is
best captured by the adage that to whom much
is given, much is required. Indeed, the overwhelming
evidence shows that I have been extremely
fortunate to have had tremendous support and encouragement both
personally and professionally, and that because so much has been given to
me, it is now my responsibility to pay that forward.
I am humbled for the opportunity to serve as President of the WWBA,
and it is my goal to continue the WWBA’s success by focusing on the value
of our membership. As the youngest person to serve as President of the
WWBA, I can speak firsthand to the benefits of being part of such a
dynamic organization; how the WWBA invests in and nurtures its members;
of the lasting connections that are made; and of the myriad of opportunities
that are available to give back – whether it be participating in our
thriving mentorship program, co-chairing one of our 50+ committees, hosting
Continuing Legal Education programs, organizing networking events, or
volunteering at our community outreach programs such as Law Day or
Read Across America. The value of the WWBA is its real-life impact. We
are not just helping ourselves, but our colleagues, other lawyers, and our
communities. This notion that we are all part of something bigger than
ourselves making a difference in the world is recognized in the mission of
the WWBA – to advance the social, economic and legal status for women
through the law while promoting justice for all, regardless of sex; to expand
opportunities for women and to raise the level of competence and
integrity in the legal profession.
My own involvement with the WWBA began when I moved back home
to Westchester County after attending the University of Michigan Law
School. Upon graduating law school and entering the practice of law, I
joined the WWBA. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I am
fortunate that my career as an attorney has gone hand in hand with my
membership and involvement with the WWBA. I owe a debt of gratitude
to all who have taken me under their wings starting with our beloved past

I n c o m i n g P r e s i d e n t ’ s M e s s a g e ( c o n t i n u e d ) . . .
president, Lisa M. Denig, all the way through our superb outgoing president,
Amanda C. Fried. This extraordinary organization and its incredible
members have given me so much, so it is required of me to give to those
who will follow me.
I look forward to working with you all in the year ahead and urge you
to please join me as we embark together on this journey of paying it
forward. Thank you.

Master’s degree, Elizabeth interned at the United Nations Headquarters for the
UN’s focal point on disability rights. She is also a graduate of New York University,
having earned her B.A. degree, magna cum laude, in history and politics.
Elizabeth previously served as Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary, and
Recording Secretary of the Westchester Women’s Bar Association, and was the cochair
Association of the State of New York Doris S. Hoffman Outstanding New Lawyer
Award.
Elizabeth is admitted to practice law in the State of New York and U.S. District
Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
AMANDA K. RIEBEN (President-Elect)
Amanda Rieben is the Director of the Pace Women’s Justice Center’s Walk-In
Legal Clinic. As Director, she provides legal assistance to victims of domestic
violence, elder abuse, and sexual assault, primarily in the areas of matrimonial and
family law, including divorce, custody, child support and other related matters. She
also oversees the day-to-day Clinic operation and supervises other staff and pro
bono attorneys serving clients through this program. Prior to joining the Pace
Women’s Justice Center, Mrs. Rieben was an associate at one of the largest family/
matrimonial law firms in Connecticut. She previously worked as a Staff Attorney at
where she defended parents in child protective proceedings in New York County
Family Court.
Ms. Rieben is the incoming 2022-2023 President Elect of the Westchester
Women’s Bar Association, and the immediate past Recording Secretary (2021-
2022). She is one of the Co-Chairs of the Westchester Women’s Bar Association’s
also a member of the Orange County Women’s Bar Association, the New York State
a practitioner in matrimonial and family law was a bit circuitous but inevitable,
given her sustained community involvement and interest in and desire to help
people.
Sherry graduated from Colgate University in 1990 and went straight to graduate
school at Tufts University where she received an MA in Environmental Policy.
Upon graduating from Tufts, she began working at the United States Environmental
Office of Policy and Management and was in charge of President Clinton’s Project
XL initiative. Project XL is a program in which corporations and government agencies
are given regulatory flexibility in exchange for achieving better “bottom-line”
environmental results. Her experience with Project XL required a working knowledge
of federal environmental statutes and regulations and prompted an interest
in law school.
Sherry began her second career as a lawyer in 2000 when she entered Pace
University Law School. She graduated Cum Laude with a Certificate in Environmental
Law from Pace in 2003. After graduation, she practiced corporate law in
Rye, NY and founded a citizen’s action group in her then hometown of Sleepy
Hollow, NY to monitor the re-development of the General Motor’s site located on
the Hudson River.
family” having resided in the Village since the late 1800s and she is passionate
about the history, residents and natural beauty of Tuxedo Park.
NATANYA BRIENDEL (Vice President)
Natanya Briendel has been a member of the Westchester Women’s Bar
Association since the mid 1990s. She has been Chairperson of the Domestic
Ms. Briendel is a Staff Attorney at the Pace Women’s Justice Center where
she supervises its Uncontested Divorce Program. She is also an Adjunct Professor
at Mercy College where she teaches Criminal Procedure and Introduction to
Family Violence.
JULIE P. PASSMAN (Vice President)
education advocacy. Building on a passion developed in law school, Ms. Passman is
the Education for All Handicapped Children Act”. Ms. Passman is admitted to
practice law in New York and Connecticut.
Ms. Passman began her law career as a member of the Litigation Department at
clients in special education matters, Ms. Passman has lectured to parent groups and
at Continuing Legal Education programs focusing on special education issues.
Force, a regional affiliate of the New York State Special Education Task Force. Ms.
Passman is a Vice President of the Westchester Women’s Bar Association (WWBA)
and a co-chairperson of the WWBA Education Committee. Ms. Passman has developed
cases.
is a graduate of Wellesley College and Boston University School of Law.
JILL OZIEMBLEWSKI (Corresponding Secretary)
Jill Oziemblewski, a graduate of Brown University and Brooklyn Law
School, began her career as an assistant district attorney in January 2005
in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. After completing rotations
in the complaint room and a general trial bureau, she transferred to the
Domestic Violence Bureau in 2006, serving there for over three years. It
was a meaningful and impactful time, being under the direction of and in
community with devoted and vastly knowledgeable prosecutors and victim
advocates, during a period when Brooklyn was a leader in the nation for
implementing its Family Justice Center. Jill managed a voluminous caseload,
presented cases to the grand jury, and tried felony and misdemeanor
cases to verdict. In February 2009, she transferred to the Appeals Bureau,
serving there for over ten years, finding engagement, intellectual
challenge, and fulfillment in appellate practice.
Jill moved to Westchester in May 2019 after applying to the Westchester
County District Attorney’s Office and being offered a position in the Appeals
and Special Litigation Division. She continues to handle appeals
and various applications in state and federal courts.
Jill joined the WWBA in July 2019 and attended book club the same
month, instantly feeling grateful for the warm welcome and enriching discussion.
She has since participated in many book clubs and several wellness
committee events. Jill is enthusiastic about the work and endeavors of
the WWBA in the year ahead.
