Covering Ground
The gap between where are you and where you want to be is inherent in running a
business. Closing that gap—covering that ground—drives effort, innovation, and
change. The last year has involved big doses of all three. We’ve had to adapt to disruptions
caused by the pandemic and current events, and that’s taken several forms: introducing
a new H-2A workforce into Hoffman Nursery to increase production, developing
our own stock farm to improve plant quality, and continuing to introduce innovative
ways to avoid supply chain snafus. Throughout these and other changes, our vision has
been on improving and providing you with ever better plants and service.
This catalog’s theme of covering ground fits that commitment and our core purpose to
promote better living through plants. Covering ground can be literal or figurative, and
we want to do both. By using new and innovative approaches to plant production and
delivery to you, we hope to get you the best quality product at the right time so you
can increase your sales.
Using plants to cover the ground makes for better landscapes. And grasses and sedges
are built for the job. Our new “Covering Ground” chart (pp. 6-9) lets you match the
plants to your needs. It also makes finding substitutes easier. We think you’ll find this
new chart and our other selection tools helpful no matter what your business is. By
getting you much-needed product and complete knowledge at the same time, we want
you to be successful in “covering ground,” too.
As our business grows and changes, we strive to cover that ground between current
reality and our vision for the future. We’re grateful for your business and your continued
loyalty. Share your stories with us; let us know what we can do to help you cover
ground.
Wishing you great grasses and sedges,
About the cover
Pennsylvania Sedge graces the cover of our 2022-2023 catalog. This North American Carex weaves itself into
a luxurious green carpet. Carex pensylvanica is our best-selling sedge and a top choice as a ground cover.
Grasses and sedges can serve as traditional ground covers, as broad sweeps that add texture and movement,
and as the matrix for multi-layered plant communities. They are the glue that holds the landscape together.
In this catalog, we invite you to explore the full range of choices for covering the ground. Turn to pp. 4-9 for
more info and a list of plants to get you covered.
