Resurrectional Apolytikion<br />

When the angelic powers appeared at Your<br />

grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became<br />

as dead. And standing by the sepulcher<br />

was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate<br />

body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it.<br />

You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal<br />

life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord,<br />

glory to You.<br />

For the Saint<br />

The Master who called you to eternal mansions<br />

on high preserves incorrupt your body even after<br />

you died, O holy Evdokimos; for you had led<br />

a lifestyle of self-restraint and decorum, never<br />

staining your flesh; and therefore truly you are<br />

blessed. With confidence intercede with Christ<br />

to save our souls.<br />

Apolytikion of St. Catherine<br />

Let us praise the most auspicious bride of<br />

Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai,<br />

our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly<br />

silenced the eloquence of the impious by the<br />

sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr,<br />

she asks great mercy for all.<br />

Apolytikion of the Church<br />

Ιn giving birth, you did preserve your virginity;<br />

in your dormition you did not forsake<br />

the world O Theotokos. You were<br />

translated onto life, since you were the<br />

Mother of life; And by your intercessions do<br />

you redeem our souls from death.<br />

Kontakion<br />

Upon the mountain were You transfigured,<br />

and Your disciples beheld Your glory as far<br />

as they were able, O Christ our God; so that<br />

when they would see You crucified they<br />

might understand that Your Passion was<br />

deliberate, and declare to the world that in<br />

truth You are the Father's radiance.<br />

EPISTLE READING<br />

ROMANS (15:1-7)<br />

Brethren, we who are strong ought to<br />

bear with the failings of the weak, and<br />

not to please ourselves; let each of us<br />

please his neighbor for his good, to edify<br />

him. For Christ did not please himself;<br />

but, as it is written, "The reproaches of<br />

those who reproached thee fell on me."<br />

For whatever was written in former days<br />

was written for our instruction, that by<br />

steadfastness and by the encouragement<br />

MATTHEW (9:27-35)<br />

At that time, as Jesus passed by, two blind men followed<br />

him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son<br />

of David." When he entered the house, the blind<br />

men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you<br />

believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him,<br />

"Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying,<br />

"According to your faith be it done to you." And<br />

their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged<br />

them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame<br />

through all that district.<br />

As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And<br />

when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled,<br />

saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees<br />

said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."<br />

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues<br />

and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity<br />

among the people.<br />

ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ δύο τυφλοὶ κράζοντες καὶ<br />

λέγοντες· ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς, υἱὲ Δαυΐδ. ἐλθόντι δὲ εἰς<br />

τὴν οἰκίαν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ τυφλοί, καὶ λέγει<br />

αὐτοῖς ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· πιστεύετε ὅτι δύναμαι τοῦτο<br />

ποιῆσαι; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· ναί, Κύριε. τότε ἥψατο<br />

δαιμονιζόμενον· καὶ ἐκβληθέντος τοῦ δαιμονίου ἐλάλησεν ὁ κωφός, καὶ<br />

ἐθαύμασαν οἱ ὄχλοι λέγοντες ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἐφάνη οὕτως ἐν τῷ ᾿Ισραήλ. οἱ δὲ<br />

Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον· ἐν τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια.<br />

Καὶ περιῆγεν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς τὰς πόλεις πάσας καὶ τὰς κώμας διδάσκων ἐν ταῖς<br />

συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν καὶ κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας καὶ θεραπεύων<br />

πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν ἐν τῷ λαῷ.<br />

Two Blind Men<br />

St. Matthew 9 (27-35)<br />

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ<br />

Our faith is a double-edged sword. On one side<br />

it is the only way of salvation, and on the other it<br />

is the most difficult one for humans to embrace. It is a faith handed down<br />

to us by eyewitnesses and yet our Lord and Savior proclaims to his<br />

friends and disciples that the blessing is in believing without seeing.<br />

Today the Lord heals two different impairments, people who were<br />

blind and people who could not speak. The power of healing is unimaginable.<br />

Just by touching, the Creator recreates what had been damaged by<br />

the evil one in the result of the separation from Him. Today, however,<br />

dear brothers and sisters, I would like to pay attention to the power of the<br />

faith that these people had when they came to Christ.<br />

It is not accidental that the Lord asks them, "Do you believe that I<br />

am able to do this?" Our salvation is directly connected to our faith. Thus,<br />

He says to them: "According to your faith be it done to you.” The beauty<br />

of the faith of these people is even greater because their faith was not<br />

based on their material knowledge or collected data but the purity of their<br />

hearts. We say “seeing is believing and faith comes from hearing” but today<br />

we learn that even the blind and the mute believed and found healing<br />

even though some of them could not see him and others could not hear<br />

His saving words.<br />

We dear brothers and sisters are very much like these blind and<br />

mute people who came to the Lord because like them we also cannot see<br />

Him, and we cannot hear Him. Therefore, let us have a love for one another<br />

so that like the blind and the mute we also can come to him with the<br />

vision and the hearing of our pure hearts so that we also can hear about<br />

our salvation: "According to your faith be it done to you."

Πνεύματος<br />

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,<br />

Η πίστη μας είναι ένα δίκοπο μαχαίρι. Από τη μία<br />

πλευρά είναι ο μόνος τρόπος σωτηρίας και από την<br />

άλλη είναι ο πιο δύσκολος για τους ανθρώπους να<br />

αποδεχτούν. Είναι μια πίστη που μας παραδόθηκε από αυτόπτες μάρτυρες και<br />

όμως ο Κύριος και ο Σωτήρας μας διακηρύσσει στους φίλους και τους<br />

μαθητές του ότι η ευλογία είναι να πιστεύoυμε χωρίς να βλέπουμε.<br />

Σήμερα ο Κύριος θεραπεύει δύο διαφορετικές αναπηρίες, ανθρώπους<br />

που ήταν τυφλοί και ανθρώπους που δεν μπορούσαν να μιλήσουν. Η δύναμη<br />

της θεραπείας είναι αδιανόητη. Απλώς αγγίζοντας, ο Δημιουργός<br />

αναδημιουργεί ό,τι είχε καταστραφεί από τον πονηρό ως αποτέλεσμα του<br />

χωρισμού από Αυτόν. Σήμερα, όμως, αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές, θα ήθελα<br />

να δώσω προσοχή στη δύναμη της πίστης που είχαν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι όταν<br />

ήρθαν στον Χριστό.<br />

Δεν είναι τυχαίο που ο Κύριος τους ρωτά, "Πιστεύεις ότι μπορώ να το<br />

κάνω αυτό;" Η σωτηρία μας συνδέεται άμεσα με την πίστη μας. Έτσι τους<br />

λέει: "Ας γίνει σύμφωνα με την πίστη σας,."Η ομορφιά της πίστης αυτών των<br />

ανθρώπων είναι ακόμα μεγαλύτερη επειδή η πίστη τους δεν βασίστηκε στις<br />

υλικές γνώσεις τους ή στα συλλεχθέντα δεδομένα, αλλά στην καθαρότητα της<br />

καρδιάς τους. Λέμε ότι «το να βλέπεις είναι πίστη και η πίστη προέρχεται από<br />

την ακρόαση», αλλά σήμερα μαθαίνουμε ότι ακόμη και οι τυφλοί και οι<br />

βουβοί πίστεψαν και βρήκαν θεραπεία, παρόλο που μερικοί από αυτούς δεν<br />

μπορούσαν να Τον δουν και άλλοι δεν μπορούσαν να ακούσουν τα σωστά<br />

λόγια Του.<br />

Εμείς, αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδερφές, μοιάζουμε πολύ με αυτούς τους<br />

τυφλούς και βουβούς ανθρώπους που ήρθαν στον Κύριο, γιατί όπως και αυτοί,<br />

δεν μπορούμε να Τον δούμε και δεν μπορούμε να Τον ακούσουμε. Ας έχουμε<br />

λοιπόν αγάπη ο ένας για τον άλλον, ώστε, όπως οι τυφλοί και οι βουβοί, να<br />

έρθουμε και εμείς σε αυτόν με την όραση και την ακοή της καθαρής καρδιάς<br />

μας, ώστε να μπορούμε επίσης να ακούσουμε για τη σωτηρία μας: " Ας γίνει<br />

σύμφωνα με την πίστη σας "


Eudocimus the Righteous of Cappadocia<br />

Saint Eudocimus, a native of Cappadocia (Asia Minor), lived during<br />

the ninth century during the reign of Emperor Theophilus (829-<br />

842). He was the son of the pious Christians Basil and Eudokia, an<br />

illustrious family known to the emperor. They raised their son “in<br />

discipline and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6: 4), planting in his<br />

soul a sincere faith and holy virtues.<br />

The righteous life of Saint Eudocimus was devoted to pleasing God<br />

and serving his neighbor. Having given a vow to remain unmarried<br />

and chaste, he avoided conversation with women and did not look<br />

at them. He would speak only with his own mother, whom he greatly<br />

respected. The emperor valued his virtue and talents, so he appointed Saint Eudocimus<br />

as governor of Chorziane, Armenia. Fulfilling his duty as a servant of God, Saint Eudocimus<br />

governed the people justly and with kindness. He concerned himself with the unfortunate,<br />

and with orphans and widows, and he was a defender of the common people. His<br />

personal Christian exploits which he did in secret, were known only to God.<br />

Eudocimus pleased God by his blameless life, and the Lord called him at age 33. Lying<br />

on his deathbed, Saint Eudocimus gave final instructions to place him in the grave in<br />

those clothes in which he would meet death. Then he sent everyone out of the room and<br />

entreated the Lord that no one would see his end, just as no one saw his secret efforts<br />

during life. His attendants buried him as he had instructed them. Right after the death of<br />

Saint Eudocimus miracles took place at his grave. Many sick people were healed, and the<br />

news of the miraculous healings spread.<br />

After 18 months, the mother of Saint Eudocimus came from Constantinople to venerate<br />

his relics. She gave orders to remove the stone, dig up the ground, and open the grave.<br />

Everyone beheld the face of the saint, bright as if alive, altogether untouched by decay. A<br />

great fragrance came from him. They took up the coffin with the relics from the earth,<br />

and they dressed the saint in new clothes. His mother wanted to take the relics of her son<br />

to Constantinople, but the Kharsian people would not clear a path for their holy one. After<br />

a certain time the hieromonk Joseph, having lived and served at the grave of the saint,<br />

transported the relics of Saint Eudocimus to Constantinople. There they were placed in a<br />

silver reliquary in the church of the Most Holy Theotokos, built by the parents of the<br />

saint.<br />

Saint Eudocimus is considered by the Russian Church to be one of the special protectors<br />

and intercessors before God of the family hearth. He was, as his name implies, truly successful<br />

in every virtue.
