Grace automatically became the senior woman teacher since there was no other women teacher to handle the girl-child issues at school. Asked how she has improved the situation of the girls at her school, Grace responds: ‘I have tried to advise them on how to deal with their menstrual cycles. Due to my constant advice on personal hygiene and sanitation, HIV/Aids, early pregnancies and peer pressure, most of them have tried to change and therefore willing to complete the primary cycle’ Grace is grateful for having attended one of the workshops organized by AMREF in partnership with the district education department on adolescent reproductive health counseling. This is because she has been able to acquire more skills to support girls in her school. She is happy with the current construction of new classrooms, latrines and bathrooms, she is convinced that this will improve the sanitation conditions in the school and enable girls to have a decent place to change and bathe whenever the need arises. She plans to train her pupils on making sanitary pads from local materials so that they can have enough to take them through their menstrual cycles and still have some emergency ones kept at school. She acknowledges that the presence of the new borehole just 50 metres away from the school will enable the girls to access clean water easily for bathing. Grace believes that through the other interventions of classroom construction, teacher training and training of the school governance bodies, the school will become attractive to the pupils because they will be able to benefit from being in school, hence education becoming meaningful and relevant to them. 5.0 PARTNERSHIP AND COORDINATION WITH OTHER BODIES The project continued to work alongside parish, sub-county and district counterparts in the departments of health, water and sanitation, livelihoods, education and community empowerment, as well as Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) in all its activities. These include: i) Existing community networks ii) Government structures iii) NGOs and CBOs who share the same vision and objectives such as Transcultural Social Organisation (TPO) and Uganda Women’s Efforts to Save Orphans (UWESO). 5.1 Improved community health � Shared work plans with district health team. � Invited district officials to facilitate, open or close workshops. � Involved the ‘in-charge’ of the health sub-district and village leaders in verification and selection of VHTs. 5.2 Improved access to quality primary education � Shared work plans with the district education department and at sub-county level with the Centre Coordinating Tutor and the Secretary for education. � Worked closely with Inspector of Schools in charge of Katine in all activities. � Worked with the Primary Teachers College on teacher training. � Worked with PTAs and SMCs to involve parents in planning and development of schools, e.g. feeding programme for children. 5.3 Improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene � Participated in the district water and sanitation coordination meeting that brings together various stakeholders. � Participated in the best practice sharing meeting on safe water provision organised by AFRICARE in which domestic water treatment methods used by AFRICARE in their project area of Gweri sub-county (in Soroti district) were shared. The meeting questioned whether this is sustainable since it involves the use of manufactured reagents ‘PURE’ and this requires financial input from the communities daily. � Participated in national sanitation week celebration during which sensitisation of communities was carried out both at parish and village levels and emphasis laid on the following; acceptable pit latrines with privacy, presence of anal cleansing materials and safe hand washing facilities after latrine use, observance of personal, domestic and food hygiene. 5.4 Improved income generation KCPP six monthly narrative report - October 2007 to March 2008 29
