Project UNIFY
made possible by funding from the U.S. Department of Education
The school year has been in full swing for several months now and Sooner Project UNIFY schools
are busy working on Project UNIFY goals and initiatives. Partners Clubs are actively involved with
Special Olympics for Unified Sports competitions, are educating their schools and communities
about the hurtful effects of using the r-word in negative ways, and are making their schools more
inclusive and accepting by engaging both athletes and partners in school activities. The partners
clubs include persons with and without intellectual disabilities.
November 5th & 6th Special Olympics Oklahoma hosted the 4th annual PASS PLAY conference.
PASS PLAY is a youth leadership conference at which students, Partners Club sponsors, and Special
Olympics Oklahoma coaches learn more about Project UNIFY and Special Olympics. Activities are designed
around discovering one’s leadership style and strengths; discussing best practices and new
ideas to promote unified sports; r-word campaigns; using Get Into It lessons; and learning about
adult–youth communication and how to better work with the opposite generation toward the same
goals. Forty-five students and adults representing 11 schools attended this year’s conference.
New to Sooner Project UNIFY this year is the formation of a Youth Activation Committee. The
purpose of the Youth Activation Committee is to engage in and promote Special Olympics activities
in their schools; communicate and network with other youth around the state regarding activation
in and around Special Olympics; and provide advice and counsel to
youth and state programs on strategies to reach other youth. Special
Olympics Oklahoma Youth Activation Committee will include youth,
ages 14 to 20, with and without intellectual disabilities and will represent
Project UNIFY schools and other schools where young people
have shown a commitment to Special Olympics. The first Youth Activation
Committee meeting was held during PASS PLAY. Fourteen youth
representing schools in Catoosa, Lawton, Harrah, Norman, Poteau,
Yukon, and The University of Oklahoma developed goals for the committee,
elected officers, and scheduled additional meetings. Natalie
Smith from Lawton is the Youth Activation Committee coordinator.
Counting our blessings.
It’s time to put a wrap on 2011, our 42nd year and take
the time to count our many blessings. In this era of
economic uncertainty, supporters of Special Olympics
Oklahoma continue to prove their steadfast belief in
our mission. The athletes continue to show new skills
and provide leadership in roles throughout the movement.
One such athlete is our own Chris Paynter, who
serves on the Special Olympics Oklahoma Law Enforcement
Torch Run state committee. He was recently rec- Chris Paynter with parents Ellen and Dean.
ognized as an Athlete of the Year in the inaugural awards
ceremony during the International Law Enforcement Torch Run conference in Calgary, Alberta.
What an honor for Chris and for Special Olympics Oklahoma. Congratulations and well done, Chris.
We are very proud that Special Olympics has been ranked first of 11 leading non-profit organizations
serving people with disabilities. Special Olympics has been awarded this top distinction by a
Philanthropedia group of 79 experts, including foundation professionals, non-profit senior staff,
academics and researchers. These experts, with an average of 20 years of work experience in the
field, recommended organizations based on their impact in the field of disability and included organizations
that support people with intellectual, physical and mental disabilities. Experts evaluated
organizations’ strengths in leadership and organizational reach, which resulted in Special
Olympics’ ranking as the organization with the greatest impact on the intellectual disability community.
This is a reminder that it takes all of us, working together to make Special Olympics the incredible
global movement that it has become.
Let us close by taking the time to say, “THANK YOU!” Thank you for taking the time to coach a group
of athletes. Thank you for training hard and living the Special Olympics oath by being brave in the
attempt. Thank you for making that incredible contribution that makes a difference for every one
of the 9,500 athletes in the program. Thank you for shaking off the discomfort or unknown and
coming to an event for the first time to realize involvement has changed your life. Thank you for
jumping in a Polar Plunge or Going Over the Edge! Thank you for helping to make Special Olympics
the ever-growing and #1 organization that it is. We look forward to seeing you at the next event.
Elks Provide Support to Special Olympics for 42 Years
Members of the Stillwater Elks have cooked smoked chicken for the Special
Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games Committee for more than 25 years. They also
provide hamburgers and hot dogs for the annual Coaches Camp in Stillwater. However,
cooking chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs is not the only support Special
Olympics Oklahoma receives from the Stillwater
Elks. The Summer Games Committee
meets months in advance of Summer Games
and the Stillwater Elks graciously open their
doors for those meetings.
Why do they do it? “We enjoy seeing the satisfaction
of the Special Olympics athletes. We
started out to help with Special Olympics in the
Stillwater area and now 25 years later we support
Young Athletes “Stars of the Future”
The Young Athletes “Stars of the Future” program really expanded in 2011 with a generous
donation from one of our sponsors, Walmart. A kick-off event was held on April
15 at Yukon High School. Julie Moore led the charge to get more future athletes involved
in Special Olympics Oklahoma. The Young Athletes ‘Stars of the Future’ events
introduce young children with intellectual disabilities ages 3 through 7 to the world of
Special Olympics. More than 90 children from around central Oklahoma participated in
the kick-off event. Many of these children had never participated in an event like this
before. “We are excited to welcome these coaches, future athletes and their families
to the Special Olympics Oklahoma family,” said Julie Moore, Stars of the Future Director.
Because of generous donations such as the one Special Olympics Oklahoma received
from Walmart in 2011, new coaches and volunteers are being trained in order
to offer this opportunity for the newest and youngest in Special Olympics Oklahoma’s
