SKATE PARK<br />
<strong>Skate</strong> parks are designed with one thing in mind, fun, and at face value that is exactly what they are.<br />
Yet whenever I visit one, whether back in my youth or recently, I feel a sense of apprehension.<br />
I have the feeling that they would be very territorial places, where a stranger’s face wouldn’t be welcome.<br />
Each skate park I visited had very individual characteristics, according to their location and surrounding<br />
environment, even the graffiti had different personalities.<br />
I chose to paint them in wet conditions so that they are rendered completely useless, they take on a purely sculptural<br />
role. The abstract graffiti, built up in layers on the angular geometric shapes, sat abandoned against their natural<br />
backdrops creates a stark contrast, which for me creates interest in a painting, not only in subject matter, but it<br />
allows me to use a broad span of application techniques which I think results in a complete painting. I am painting<br />
the opposing personas of the skate park, and of life.<br />
