A BREAKTHROUGH IN ULTRA-

Available in 17.3 and 23.0 cu. ft. (489.9 and 651.3 liters)
capacities, the Forma ® Power Plus -86C Ultra-Low
Temperature Freezers from ThermoQuest provide a proven
level of performance, product protection, and quality. This
engineering breakthrough established a new standard in
cascade refrigeration. Power Plus freezer components
were engineered from the ground up to provide more
reserve heat removal capacity (BTUH) than any other
freezer on the market today. Other manufacturers who
claim high BTUH reserve capacity simply modify their
conventional freezers by using larger compressors, without
considering refrigerant flow, compressor efficiency, or
evaporator size. The end result is often an inefficient unit
that uses more electricity, with little or no more BTUH
reserve capacity.

CASCADE TRANSFER SYSTEM
Computer-designed heat exchanger
provides optimum system efficiency for
heat transfer from the low stage to the
high stage refrigeration system.
Refrigerant metering devices,
interstage heat exchanger, and
dryer are easily accessible.
PEAK CONTROL SYSTEM
This device is a unique method of
automatically controlling the internal
pressure and temperature of the
refrigeration system, resulting in a
more balanced refrigerant flow. This
system ensures that the two 1 HP
compressors operate within their
design parameters.
We are the only ultra-low
temperature freezer manufacturer
who offers the PEAK Control
System (U.S. Patent #5,477,697).
LARGER CONDENSER
Extra large condenser complements
the Forma Power Plus design and
provides increased heat rejection.
Condenser is constructed of
aluminum fins and copper tubing.
“SMART”
CONDENSER FANS
For maximum compressor
protection, two tubeaxial fans
have been incorporated into the
compressor housing.
When both compressors are
running, both fans operate to pull
ambient air through the condenser
and across the compressors.
When both compressors are off,
one fan remains “ready” to cycle
on should the temperature in the
compressor housing rise above
32C (90F).

EVAPORATOR
Copper tube evaporator is sized to
achieve increased BTU removal.
Downflow evaporator ensures
proper oil return, yielding longer
compressor life.
Positive attachment and increased
surface area of the evaporator are
achieved through an exclusive
thermal bonding process. This
process maximizes heat transfer
between the copper tubing and the
freezer chamber.
Maintenance-free evaporator is
foamed-in-place within the freezer
cabinet.
COMPRESSORS
Two 1 HP air-cooled, semi-hermetic
compressors are the heart of the
Forma Power Plus ULT Freezer.
These highly efficient units operate at
a low speed (1,750 RPM) for long life.
Special consideration to component
design ensures that the compressors
operate quietly. The unit operates at
a low 55 dBA*.
Service valves allow easy recovery
of refrigerants and field servicing.
NON-CFC
Only the following are used:
Non-CFC, non-HCFC, nonflammable,
and commercially
available refrigerants
Non-CFC urethane insulation
Non-CFC shipping and packaging
materials

ION - PERFORMANCE
CONSTRUCTION
Cabinets are constructed of high quality, heavy gauge, cold-rolled steel. Powder coat paint finish on cabinet
exterior provides a uniform surface that resists chipping and rust. All cabinets meet ASTM Standard B117-85
for salt spray testing that exceeds 1,000 hours.
Interiors are constructed of durable stainless steel which aids in temperature stability and simplifies cleaning.
A flexible, triple-point silicone gasket ensures a positive door seal and minimizes the chance of cold air loss.
Built-in vacuum relief port enables easy re-entry after door closings.
Superior design of the cabinet extrusion/gasket eliminates the need for peripheral, energy consuming heat
tapes and refrigeration hot gas loops that burden the refrigeration system.
Interior compartment features four individual inner doors that reduce cold air loss.
Three solid stainless steel shelves are fully adjustable on 0.5" (1.3cm) centers.
Dual wheel, locking casters and key lock on the door are standard.
Units include a minimum of 5.0" (12.7cm) of non-CFC, foamed-in-place urethane insulation with an R factor
rating of 36.3 in the cabinet and 4.5" (11.4cm) in the door.
INDEPENDENT TEMPERATURE CONTROL SYSTEM
The alarm/monitoring and control systems are totally independent of each other.
Tamper-resistant controller digitally displays temperature (LCD) in one degree increments.
Temperature controller prohibits setpoints below the operating range of the freezer.
DUAL TEMPERATURE PROBES
Independent probes for the Enviro-Scan and temperature controller are located inside the freezer chamber
to show the actual temperature where the product is stored.
Probes are positioned opposite the door hinge in the lower left front corner of the chamber.
Should the temperature control probe fail, the refrigeration system locks on to ensure product protection.
AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE COMPENSATOR
Incoming voltage is monitored and adjusted automatically (i.e., boosted or bucked) to compensate for high
and low voltage situations, ensuring compressor operation is within the design parameters.
Indicator light on the front of the freezer indicates when the incoming voltage is being corrected, providing
peace-of-mind performance.
REMOVABLE, CLEANABLE AIR FILTER
Front-mounted filter, which allows quick visual inspection, prevents dust and dirt from being drawn into
the condenser.
Filter is designed to be washable and reusable and can be removed without tools for easy cleaning or
replacement. Air Filter Replacement Kits consisting of five new filters are available.
FRONT-TO-BACK AIRFLOW
A front-to-back air circulation system results in cooler compressor temperatures, increased performance/
reliability, and longer compressor life.
Ambient air enters the front of the grille and passes through the filter, condenser, and compressor housing
before exiting the rear of the unit.

ENVIRO-SCAN MICROPROCESSOR*
Digital display (LCD), audible/visual indicators, and a
sensi-touch keypad keep you informed of freezer functions.
Audible/visual alarms alert you of the following conditions:
– Over/undertemperature of the freezer chamber
– Low battery capacity (below 50%)
– Clogged filter or high ambient temperature conditions
– Power failure
– Door ajar
High and low alarm parameters are programmable.
Exclusive alarm test system saves valuable time when checking alarm
system readiness. The system simulates cabinet warm-up/cool-down and
tests the entire alarm circuit without requiring you to open the freezer door.
Enviro-Scan Microprocessor
Standard battery back-up provides power to the monitor during power failure
(minimum 72 hour capacity based on a full charge).
Standard RS-232 port permits computer interface and monitoring of temperature and high/low alarms.
Remote alarm contacts and millivolt output signals are standard.
Connecting external alarms to the freezer for added product protection is recommended.

DOUBLE DOOR MODELS
Double door design (U.S. Patent
#5,600,966 and #5,737,939)
provides multiple possibilities for
short- and long-term storage needs.
Frequently used samples can be
stored in the top chamber while
long-term storage items remain
undisturbed in the bottom.
Because cold air “falls,” the
temperature of the bottom chamber
remains stable and helps ensure
product protection even during
repeated upper door openings.
Separate switches for each door
activate the door ajar alarm.
For easy access, each door
incorporates a single draw door latch.
Standard key locks secure the
freezer doors and ensure product
security. Optional, unique key locks
(Stock #195915) are available.
A multi-point silicone gasket tightly
seals the upper and lower doors.
