Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP), on behalf of the
Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), is now accepting
proposals for the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
The KLLCF was established by the RDCK in 2014 by referendum.
provides financial support each year to local projects that help conserve
and restore the area’s prized fish, wildlife, habitat and water.
In 2021, eight projects successfully received KLLCF funding: bat
stewardship on private land through the Wildlife Conservation
Society Canada; reducing grizzly bear conflict through Grizzly
Bear Coexistence Solutions; restoration of the Harrop wetlands in
Sunshine Bay Regional Park by the Friends of Kootenay Lake
Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
Request for Proposals
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional
District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking
proposals for projects that will benefit conservation
in the rural areas around Kootenay Lake, specifically
Electoral Areas A, D, and E within the RDCK.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial
support for important projects that will contribute to
the conservation of our valuable natural areas. Kootenay
Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF) funding
is available for conservation projects that result in the
reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The Fund
supports projects that lead to clean air, safe water,
habitat for fish and wildlife, natural areas, and healthy
watersheds.
Projects that are technically sound and effective, and
provide value for money through partnerships with
other funders will be given priority. Proponents must
be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nation,
or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations
may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical
Review Committee will review project proposals
and make recommendations to the RDCK for final funding
approval.
To apply for funding, go to
https://kootenayconservation.ca/kootenay-lakelocal-conservation-fund/.
Review the Terms of Reference
(paying particular attention to Section 8 – Fund
Design) and KLLCF Application Guide, and then apply
using the application forms provided.
The closing date for project submissions is 4:30 pm
PDT October 28, 2022.
Project proposals must be delivered by email to
info@kootenayconservation.ca.
We Saved
Cottonwood Lake!
Celebrate a Community Taking Action –
October 8, 2022, Cottonwood
Lake Regional Park
Four years in the making and we have
finally done it. We have saved Cottonwood
Lake. With your incredible support, we successfully
raised just under $650,000 which
supported the purchase of 49 hectares of
mature forest slated to be logged. Over 1,000
different individual donors, from families to
businesses, locals, non-locals, and everyone
in between, helped us reach our goal of protecting
Cottonwood Lake so it can remain
wild.
So, you’re all aware,
$400,000 went to the
land purchase with the
remainder going to
endowment fees, surveys,
and operational costs that
all contribute to Cottonwood’s
future.
Thanks to a passionate
group of volunteers
and a giving, creative,
motivated community
behind them, the wilderness
above Cottonwood
Lake—home to a variety
of plants and animals—
has been protected.
Forever.
Over the past year,
the work of the Cottonwood
Lake Preservation
Society (CLPS) has been
focused on the transition
of lands to be protected
in perpetuity. The money
the CLPS raised was
passed to the RDCK, who
became the on-title owners
of the property.
From there, the CLPS
continued to work with
the RDCK to transfer
the land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada
(NCC). Supported by the funds raised by
CPLS for an endowment, NCC
will manage and protect the
property’s important ecological
features. It’s taken some time,
but we’re happy
to report that the
mature, forest ecosystem
above our
beloved Cottonwood
Lake will be
protected from any
type of development
for generations
to come.
To celebrate the
closing of the Save
Cottonwood campaign,
and to recognize
the many
of you who donated your time,
your creativity, your energy, and
your money to Save Cottonwood,
we’re throwing a shaker.
Join us on Saturday October 8
th , 2022, at Cottonwood Lake between
12 p.m. and 4 p.m. as we unveil our
new donor kiosk, and officially celebrate
the closure of this amazing story
of a small community rising to a very
big challenge. Check our website (savecottonwood.com)
The Cannabis Plant
The cannabis plant was used for millennia in our daily
health regimens until the turn of the 20th century when
cannabis use became criminal and stigmatized. Prior to
criminalization, cannabis was used medicinally to treat concerns
like arthritis, migraines, epileptic conditions, depression,
asthma and “women’s pains”. Even Queen Victoria was
known to take a cannabis tincture, given to her by her doctor,
Sir J. Russell Reynolds, to relieve menstrual cramps. In 1890,
Sir J. Russell Reynolds wrote:
“When pure and administered carefully, [cannabis] is one
of the most valuable medicines we possess.”
There are different varieties of the cannabis plant that
contribute to different flavours, uses, storage capacity and
regional compatibility. Much like apples! Some apples are
great for eating, making pies, sauces or juice; different varieties
taste different, have a different crunch and purpose. When
it comes to cannabis, no two plant varieties are the same, but
they all stem from the genus of the flowering plant called
Cannabis. The species name is Cannabis Sativa L, while Cannabis
Sativa and Cannabis Indica are subspecies.
Cannabis Sativa is indigenous to Afghanistan and Eastern
Asia and typically grows in warm regions at low elevations.
These plants are tall and spindly with spread out flowers and
narrow leaves.
Cannabis Indica grows in cooler regions at higher elevations.
These plants are short and stocky, with wide leaves and
dense flowers. Indicas are better adapted to grow the varieties
with a higher level of CBD. These are becoming more well
known today. Indica plants grow best outdoors in the West
Kootenay region while most Sativas would need to be grown
indoors due to our short and cooler growing seasons.
The medicinal components of cannabis are found predominantly
in the flower of the female plant in the sticky,
crystal-like hairs called trichomes. If a female plant remains
unpollinated by a male plant, she will create big, beautiful
flowers, commonly known as buds. Typically, male plants are
destroyed to avoid pollination, unless a gardener is keeping
them safely separated for breeding purposes. Once a female
plant has been pollinated, she creates seeds in the flowers
which lowers the medicinal potency in the trichomes.
Sativa and Indica subspecies have erroneously been associated
with different effects on the body. While it may be helpful
to know if your cannabis is derived from an Indica plant
vs. a Sativa plant to understand the medical implications,
there is much more to the story than this alone. Culturally,
we’ve considered that Indica flowers cause a sedating effect
and a Sativa flower to be energizing. But there are exceptions
and inconsistencies to this understanding. In a future article
we will look at additional factors that impact our responses,
like the cannabinoid ratio and terpene profile.
For the Love of Lichen
Field work to conserve old growth forests and caribou habitat
in the North Columbia mountains began this month.
The project that we’re embarking on is identifying, assessing,
and advocating for the protection of endangered old growth
forest in the Inland Temperate Rainforest. Not a lot of ground
assessment has been done in the Inland Temperate Rainforest,
and often those who visit the region are doing so for logging
purposes. On some days, 500, 600, 800-year-old trees are coming
out of these valleys loaded on logging trucks. Often, we
don’t know what we’re losing.
To document what’s at stake, Eddie Petryshen, our Conservation
Specialist, visited the globally rare and irreplaceable
ecosystem with Toby Spribille (the scientist who discovered
that lichens can consist of multiple fungal partners, not just
one) to research new-to-science and rare lichens and field
assess endangered Inland Temperate Rainforest stands.
project,
this exhibit
explores the
dispossession
of Japanese
Canadians in
the 1940s.
The story
follows seven narrators,
illuminating the loss of
home and the struggle for
justice. Learn about life
for Japanese Canadians in
Canada before WWII, the
administration of their
lives during and after the
war, and how legacies of
dispossession continue
to this day.
Winter fishing
Lake Fishing The winter season is prime
fishing time. Because of the depth of Kootenay
Lake and the flow of the cu rents in the A row
Lakes (both lakes are like widened areas of
the Columbia River system), the water never
freezes. Some people claim that wintertime
fishing on the lakes is the best. You need an
assortment of lures. Bucktails, plugs, apexes,
Bi l Normans, and flasher/hoochies. That should
Whitewater backcountry.
Photo: Leigh and Spring McClurg
Ice Fishing If you have a sled you can
acces some of the sma l alpine lakes that do
freeze. Many of these are stocked courtesy
of the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.
Again check www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca Another
exce lent source is www.gofishbc.com
For ice fishing, it is important to go to areas
of the lake where the fish are most likely to
concentrate. Fo rainbow trout and eastern
brook char, the best fishing is often done in
water less than five metres deep; in many
situations, fishing in depths of three metres
is located just 6
It is a calm lake
that is regularly
stocked and it is
sma l enough that
it usua ly freezes in
the winter. The lake is
rich in underwater plant
life which makes it a perfect
environment for the many species of fish that
have been introduced. Ye low perch, trout
and bass are common, and are good eating.
There is northern pike in the lake as we l (good
eating? a ma ter of opinion!) The li tle sunfishes
ca led Pumpkinseed, which won’t grow bigger
than your hand, are very high spirited and great
fun for beginners and kids.
This important conservation project is made possible by the
BC Conservation & Biodiversity Awards. We are looking forward
to sharing our and Toby’s findings with you soon. Louisiana
Pacific and BC Timber Sales have cumulatively proposed to log
more than 620 hectares of low elevation old growth, the loss of
which will severely fragment ancient forest and degrade core caribou
habitat and limit connectivity.
Rare lichens in BC’s inland temperate rely on old growth forest.
Much of the region’s old-growth forest habitat for these species
has been lost in the last 50 years in the inland rainforest region.
As a consequence, population trends for all of these lichens are
in a downward trend, and the remaining populations are increasingly
fragmented in a drying and warming landscape. We need to
protect these stands, not log them.
Selkirk College’s New President
President Maggie Matear has been at the helm of the college
since late-May. Settling in and getting familiar with her new role
over the past three months, Matear is looking forward to welcoming
students and staff back to a learning environment filled with
promise. “There’s something about the energy that a building full
of students brings,” says Matear. “The people who like to be in the
post-secondary sector feed off that energy, so we’re all looking forward
to September. There is an excitement around starting a new
chapter of learning and achievement for students and staff alike.”
Matear moved into the college’s top leadership position after
an extensive nation-wide search to replace outgoing president
Angus Graeme. She began her post-secondary career 30 years
ago as a community adult educator, teaching and coordinating
training programs in remote Indigenous communities. Since that
time, Matear has worked primarily in rural communities in an
impressive array of positions that include management consulting,
strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and organizational
development. Fuelled by core leadership values focused on
respect for those around her, excellence and kindness, Matear is
taking an inclusive approach to her new job.
“One of my challenges will be how to build on all the great
initiatives that have gotten us to this point,” says Matear, who
arrived at the college from her position as Vice President of University
Services, Finance & Administration at Yukon University
in Whitehorse. “It’s ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ and
reaching further, as opposed to getting off and moving in a different
direction.”
During the transition in June, Graeme toured with Matear
around the region to meet with staff at different locations and
leaders in the communities that the college serves.
“What I really appreciate is how much time community leaders
had for Selkirk College,” says Matear, who has held leadership
positions in economic and community development settings
while serving on a wide range of non-profit boards. “I met with
very busy people—mayors, CAOs, superintendents of school
boards, First Nations representatives, executive directors of
non-profits—all of them were happy to meet with us. It wasn’t
challenging to set up these meetings, and it speaks really loudly
of the reputation Selkirk College has developed as a true community
partner. It was invigorating to discover that, and I look
forward to continuing to meet with all of these people who really
believe in the potential of where they live.”
This September will mark the first full return to on-campus
activity at Selkirk College since the pandemic turned the world
upside-down in March 2020. New challenges have emerged that
point to even greater emphasis on what post-secondary education
can provide local economies. Addressing labour shortages
and the need for more skilled workers begins in the classrooms,
labs, studios and shops of Selkirk College.
With more than 70 program offerings and anticipating up to
2,500 students for the coming academic year, Selkirk College
provides a range of academic, career, vocational and technical
educational pathways. Like students anticipating the first day of
classes, the new Selkirk College president is marking the days
until an exciting new learning chapter begins.
“Selkirk College is a remarkable destination. It’s completely
unique and it’s located in an absolutely beautiful location,” says
Matear. “Most importantly, what takes place here on a daily basis
changes lives by providing better opportunities for the future. I’m
just so happy to be part of it.”
Mulisha
Mulisha is a 6 year old female lab cross. She is a little shy at first but
Mulisha is a total people pleaser and she walks excellent on leash. She
gets along with most dogs and has been okay with friendly cats, she
is uncomfortable with small children. Mulisha has a great personality
and is just an overall good dog. She is very treat motivated, knows
tricks, will sit for a
treat without being
asked and loves
back scratches. If
you are interested
in meeting her
please submit an
application and we
will contact you if
she is match.
