FROM THE TOUCHLINE
I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The
Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this
afternoon for our game against Dewsbury Moor Maroons
in the National Conference League Division Two.
We welcome the players, supporters and committee of the Maroons to Woolston and
hope that they have had a safe journey across here and enjoy our hospitality today.
We have started to hit form at the right time having claimed two wins and a draw from
our three games in August and this means that if we can beat Dewsbury today then
we are guaranteed to finish in sixth place and claim a trip to either Barrow Island or
Normanton Knights next weekend in the Play Off Semi Final.
As you will see today is a celebration of Rugby League at the club with our ‘A’ team
entertaining Burtonwood Bridge in The Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington
Alliance Cup Semi Final at 12.15pm and I am sure that it will be a cracking game. We
have been in fine form of late and that has seen us move upto third place in the NWML
Division Three table, whilst Bridge have finished top of Division Four South & East.
The winners of this game will face Crosfields ‘A’ or Burtonwood Chargers in the Final at
Victoria Park Stadium on Wednesday 28th September.
Following the conclusion of the NCL game there will be a Race Night in the club and
that will be followed at 7.30pm by Bonker’s Bingo. Tickets for the bingo are £12 each
and can still be purchased.
As you will see a little later in the programme Dewsbury Moor Maroons Assistant
Coach Mark Fortis is cycling to Woolston today from the Maroons clubhouse; this will
be ride number eleven of eleven that has seen him cycle to all of their away games this
season for charity. That is some achievement and I am certain that he will be given a
very warm Woolston welcome when he arrives; well done Mark!
On a very sad note the Woolston club were saddened to learn of the passing of Jim
Shaw (Grandad of Chris Mellor) and Paul ‘Willy’ Wilson (dad of Johnny). Both were
regulars on the touchline for many years supporting the club and they will be sorely
missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with both families at this sad time and a minute’s
applause will take place before both of today’s games in their memory.
Thanks for your attendance today and for your support throughout the season; we
hope to see you again next year. Why not bring a friend along with you next time and
introduce them to the Rovers!!!
