VARIETY IN YOUR GARDEN 

Unusual, diverse, expressive - gabions are uniquely aesthetic, long-lasting 

elements in garden landscaping. 

The many possible uses speak for themselves – they extend from decorative 

individual elements to appealing raised beds to innovative privacy screens 

to inviting benches. There are scarcely any limits to how far your imagination 

can take you. 

Rectangular, square, round, high or low – you can create gabions in any 

shape you want, to give them your personal stamp. Whatever design you 

choose, you always get a high-quality, long-lasting product that makes your 

garden look even more unique. 

Putting up a gabion is easy to do, and doesn’t take long at all. 

You don’t need to be particularly handy.

TYPES OF COATINGS 

GALVANISING 

The quality of the basket determines the lifetime of a gabion. So for our DIY models, 

we apply an anti-corrosion galvanised coating with a robust 275 g/m 2 thickness. 

This zinc-aluminium coating makes the steel wire especially resistant to weather as well as 

bending and impacts. The smooth, even surface of the mesh shines immediately after you set 

it up, but after a while it takes on the typical stylish matt appearance. 

HOT-DIP GALVA- 

NISED BASKETS 

In addition to our galvanised coated baskets 

we also offer pre-produced hot-dip galvanised 

gabions. With these, we first weld the entire element 

at our plant before dipping it into a zinc 

bath at 450 °C. This results in a tough, full-coverage 

anti-corrosion coat that also covers cuts 

and welds. 

We provide our stone baskets with openings 

so that you can fill them with rocks, and we 

naturally also supply covers to fit. They are 

easy to lock down with spirals or C-rings after 

filling.

TYPES OF CORNER 

CLOSURES 

SPIRALS 

You can assemble gabion fences without tools, thanks to our practical 

spirals. The four-millimetre gauge wire is supplied already shaped into 

a spiral. This is the easiest way to turn meshes into a gabion. Assembly 

is fast and easy. You simply turn the spirals at the joints through the 

meshes you want to connect, and your elements are securely connected. 

C-RINGS 

Want to connect your meshes discreetly?Use our simple, unobtrusive C-rings. 

The C-rings clip on every five to ten centimetres with our easy-to-use C-ring 

pliers, which we provide with every C-ring order. Do you want assembly to be 

even easier? Then you’ll like our tough special pliers. It features a magazine for 

fast feeding of C-rings as you work. This lets you link up the meshes quickly.

TIPPING PREVENTION 

GALVANISING 

Secure your high, slim gabion fences from tipping. Our quality galvanised posts hold your stone 

baskets securely in position. We offer them in various heights to fit your individual needs. 

The posts are set in concrete 60 to 80 cm deep in stable soil. If a foundation is already in place, 

post anchors can be used. Simply anchor these in the foundation and push the post over the long 

shaft. Then set up the gabion over the posts. Note that at least two-thirds of the post should go 

into the gabion! It is not necessary to attach the stone basket to the post. Filling the stones hides 

the posts, and the posts and stones interlock so that the gabion stands firm and cannot tip. 

Use at least two posts for individual elements, or at least one post per metre of length for 

linked gabion fences.

We recommend tipping prevention for walls with over 80 cm height (H) 

andless than 40 cm depth (D) i.e. D/H

WHAT PREPARATORY WORK IS NECESSARY 

BEFORE PUTTING UP A GABION? 

Filled gabions are heavy, and the ground needs to be stable enough to bear the weight. 

It’s a good idea to pack down the ground, but there is no need to lay a complete 

foundation. Align the stone baskets horizontally. Anchor the tipping-prevention posts 

in concrete before putting up the gabions. 

Our recommendation:lay a garden fleece under the gabion so that grass cannot 

grow into the stone baskets.

WHAT ARE THE SPACERS FOR? 

Inserting the spacers between the side meshes of the gabions keeps the weight of the stones 

evenly distributed on the meshes. This prevents the meshes from bulging. Insert the spacers from 

front to back. Distribute the spacers evenly on the face of the mesh at 15 to 25 cm intervals. 

The spacers are supplied with the stone baskets.Per square metre of face, we calculate that 

about 15 spacers are needed.If you need additional spacers, you can order them as accessories. 

The stable, round columns need no spacers.Square gabions need spacers only if their cross 

section is 32 x 32 cm or larger.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 

? 

WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO FILL THE GABIONS? 

After inserting the spacers, first place wooden slats over them to protect them from falling 

stones. You can pull the slats out once a layer of stone is lying on them. 

Then lay large stones in the baskets by hand. Place them as close together as possible, with the 

flat sides facing the mesh face. If the stones are smaller, you can pour them into the gabion. 

Use a bucket or KG pipe for this. The stones will go right where you want them. It also protects 

the mesh from mechanical stress.

WHAT SIZE STONES SHOULD I USE FOR GABIONS? 

The size of the stones depends on the mesh size and the basket depth. For mesh size 5 x 5 cm, 

use stones from 32 to 56 mm in size. For 5 x 10 cm mesh, use stones at least 45-125 mm in size, 

and for 10 x 10 cm mesh, use stones at least 80-120 mm in size. For raised beds or gabions that 

are 10 cm deep, use only small stone sizes. The smaller the stones, the easier it is to get an 

even fill.

HOW CAN I DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF STONES 

I NEED? 

For a cubic metre of gabion, you’ll need about 1.65 tonnes of stone on average, 

depending on how carefully they are distributed. The actual weight also depends on the density 

and size of the stones, so we cannot make any guarantees as to the amount you’ll need.

CAN GABION MESHES BE SHORTENED? 

Since the meshes are anti-corrosion treated, a heat-generating cutting process (like grinding or 

sawing) is not advisable as it will damage the coating. But you can cut the mesh with bolt cutters. 

The shearing motion draws the galvanised layer over the edge of the cut surface and protects it. 

At the centre of the cut surface, an oxidation spot will form, but it will not get bigger. If you cut 

hot-dip galvanised mesh, apply zinc spray to the cuts.

DARK FLECKS ARE VISIBLE ON THE WELDS. 

WHAT ARE THESE FROM? 

The galvanising covers the welds during welding. 

This protects them from corrosion. 

Small traces of powder (soot) can still be seen on freshly galvanised meshes. 

The spots are from the manufacturing process, and wash away after a few rain showers. 

There may also be white powdery residues on the mesh. These are production-related 

and are harmless. They are likewise washed away by rain in the course of time. 

QUALITY CRITERIA 

The high shear strength of the weld points makes our meshes very strong. The 

wire we use also has a higher tensile strength (>450 N/mm²) than other products. 

The quality of our meshes is regularly inspected by independent laboratories, with 

testing of the shear strength of the weld spots and the tensile strength of the wire. 

There is also a salt spray test to DIN EN ISO 9227. This evaluates the meshes as 

lasting over 3,000 hours. Coating thickness is at least 275 g/m².

VARIABLE SIZES 

CONNECTED GABION FENCES 

Are you planning a garden fence that is substantially longer than the maximum 200 cm and higher 

than the maximum height of 100 cm of our standard gabion fences? Just add more. Connect the 

baskets to each other. There is no need to have double meshes on the side faces and the bases/ 

tops, which reduces the material needed and so your costs. Connecting the baskets directly to 

each other provides the greatest stability and also looks good. The extension baskets should have 

the same depth as the first or lower baskets. We offer a simple system for this based on four 

different types of gabions. 

Is the size you need not in our standard gabion range? 

No problem! We also make gabions to order. This means you can make gabion fences in precisely 

the size you need. This gabion basket is delivered complete with all needed materials: the spiral 

or C-rings for connecting the edges of the mesh panels, and the spacers for preventing the 

gabions from bulging. Gabion fences made to measure are specially made and therefore cannot 

be exchanged.

COLUMNS 

STONE & FLOWER COLUMNS 

Our gabion columns are made from just one mesh. This provides maximum stability. Due to their 

stability, the round columns need no spacers, and the rectangular ones do only if they exceed a 

ground area of 32 x 32 cm. The ends are connected with a spiral as standard. If desired, you can 

get your column in any other height, from 50 up to 230 cm. Please note that the possible height 

increments depend on the chosen mesh size. 

Our flower columns are hot-dip galvanised, and delivered already bent and welded, 

including flowerpot.

Note that inside meshes and floors generally have mesh size 10 x 10 cm. 

The base mesh may be two-piece, for connection with a spiral. The inside 

mesh is covered with a fleece so that soil cannot be rinsed into the stones.
