Hello everyone and welcome back to Eppleton, as we at last 

return to our home stadium in the Barclays Women’s Championship 

against Charlton Athletic Women. 

I’d like to welcome Karen Hills, her staff 

and players, and Charlton’s supporters who 

have travelled for today’s game, and we wish 

you all a safe journey home following the 

final whistle. 

We go into today’s match still seeking for 

our first win, but overall, we feel it hasn’t 

been for the want of trying, and it has been 

an admittedly tough set of opening fixtures. 

We were very happy with both the point 

and the performance in the opening game 

at Durham, a game we felt we could have 

gone on to win. We then had a blip against 

Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light and 

felt there was a lot we needed to improve 

upon. Last weekend at Bristol City, we played 

well but came away with a narrow defeat. 

We’ve worked hard this week, and we’re 

hoping that our fortunes can change here 

and it’ll come together for us to get our first 

win on the board. 

We’ve spoken in the build-up about making 

Eppleton a fortress – it’s been a long time 

since we’ve had a league game here and we 

want to make it worth the wait, just as much 

for all of you as well as ourselves.

Emma Kelly x 

She Kicks 

SAFC Women vice-captain Emma Kelly 

recently chatted with She Kicks about 

her career so far… 

Emma Kelly has fully established herself as 

a mainstay in the fabric of SAFC Women. 

The 25-year-old midfielder demonstrates 

experience beyond her years, and since 

her arrival in the summer of 2021 has been 

entrusted by Mel Reay with the vicecaptaincy 

alongside skipper 

Keira Ramshaw. 

“The part-time ones were mostly PE 

teachers all day, then having to drive 

there at night to train. There was a bit of 

an odd atmosphere at times within the 

team, because obviously everyone was at 

different emotions, feelings, tiredness! 

“It was just where women’s football was a 

few years ago.” 

Kelly then discussed taking on armband 

duties following Ramshaw’s absence early 

this season. 

Following a career so far which has 

spanned between professional and 

semi-professional playing time, at home 

and on foreign turf, and with a parallel PE 

teaching journey, Kelly sat down with She 

Kicks to chat about her years so far. 

“Last time I was at Sunderland, it was a 

hybrid club, so we had half of them as fulltime 

players and half as part-time,” she 

recalls. “Full-time players training in the 

morning and then waiting around 

to train in the evening with the parttime 

players.” 

“We’ve got a lot of respect for Keira as a 

captain and her loyalty to the club, so I 

was just trying to follow in her footsteps 

with what she would be saying and 

wanting the girls to achieve every game. 

“Make sure everyone knows their jobs 

and that everyone feels supported, and 

off the pitch, just being that leader that 

everyone feels they can approach and 

talk to.”

SAFC WOMEN U23 

BEGIN LEAGUE 

This afternoon, following on from 

today’s contest at Eppleton between 

SAFC Women and Charlton Athletic, 

our newly formed Women’s Under-23 

side will contest their first-ever league 

match against Stockton Town Ladies at 

the Academy of Light (KO 2pm). 

Supporters are welcome to make their 

way down to the AoL to cheer on the girls 

free of charge, as a new era begins on 

Wearside. 

The young Lasses side will assist with the 

development of Sunderland RTC players 

and strengthen the pathway towards Mel 

Reay’s senior setup. 

Domonic Bylett, former Spennymoor 

Town Ladies coach, will head up the 

coaching for the team, having previously 

won the Durham County FA Women’s 

League One – the division in which the 

SAFC Women U23 side will be starting 

their journey. 

Bylett will be assisted by Steve Dix 

and Jack Avery, who will focus on the 

transition between RTC and Foundation 

of Light football, and U23 level. 

With further players to be announced 

in due course, the current playing
