FROM THE
Editor
Manager Nigel Pearson labelled Saturday’s defeat to QPR as our
“poorest performance of the season” but if football is about one thing,
it’s about bouncing back.
In the Championship particularly,
the games are coming thick and
fast, so with Coventry City here on
Tuesday night, the opportunity to
make amends arrives quickly.
Coventry City visit Ashton Gate
after securing their first three points
of the season at the weekend.
Viktor Gyökeres netted the only
goal in a 1-0 win at home to
Middlesbrough, though the Sky
Blues remain bottom of the table,
one point behind Huddersfield Town.
As always, we take a closer look
at our opponents over on the
Opposition Pages, where you will
find an old programme cover from
the archives!
This cover, alongside the latest
Moment in Time spread, throw us
back to 1977 and a crucial meeting
between the Robins and Coventry
City. Both teams were fighting
for survival in the First Division.
Certainly, it will bring back some
happy memories for a few of you!
>2 THE ROBINS COVENTRY CITY
THE ROBINS COVENTRY CITY >3

Good evening and a warm welcome to this Tuesday
night Sky Bet Championship match against Coventry
City.
Tonight we offer a warm welcome to Mark Robins, his
players, staff and supporters for the second of backto-back
home games. These are certainly good to have
after three games on the road before the international
break.
Assessing the game against QPR at the weekend we
contributed to our own downfall. We conceded two
goals in three minutes relatively early and we can’t do
that if we expect to get something out of a match.
We expect better from ourselves and we have to move
on quickly from what was our most disappointing
performance of the season.
Whether we win, lose or draw a game, I remain realistic
in my approach. After the defeat of course there is
immediate disappointment but remaining positive is
key. I don’t operate with a mentality of reacting badly
to a result. Instead it is about identifying areas of the
performance - where we did well or need to improve.
We have seen enough about us this season to suggest
that we can make big strides this year. What that
ultimately means remains to be seen but we do need
to get back to winning ways.
It will be no easy test against Coventry, who have
struggled for points. They are bottom of the table but
after their first win against Middlesbrough on Saturday
we fully expect Mark to bring his team here full of fight.
It’s our second meeting against the Sky Blues this
season, having won 4-1 in Round One of the Carabao
Cup in August. A clean sheet would have been nice
on the night but we capitalised on their slow start,
progressed in the cup and kicked off an unbeaten
run of eight matches. We showed a togetherness,
especially in the second half when we saw Coventry
improve but we saw it out in the end.
Lastly, a mention to our internationals and in particular
Tommy Conway on his deserved debut for Scotland
Under-21s and Antoine Semenyo, who was back with
the Ghana squad. Credit to everyone who was called
up for their respective countries and those experiences
will serve them well.
Enjoy the game tonight.
Cheers,
Nige
NIGEL
Pearson
WHETHER WE WIN, LOSE OR DRAW A GAME,
I REMAIN REALISTIC IN MY APPROACH.
AFTER THE DEFEAT OF COURSE THERE
IS IMMEDIATE DISAPPOINTMENT BUT
REMAINING POSITIVE IS KEY.
INTERVIEW
Antoine
Semenyo
Whether you have tickets for the 2022 Fifa World Cup or will be watching
or listening from home, Antoine Semenyo may be as close to the action
as you can possibly get.
Our Ghanian international was
recently called up for the Black
Stars’ friendlies against Brazil - the
world’s number one ranked side -
and Nicaragua, with the final squad
for this year’s World Cup due to be
announced later in October.
It would be a proud moment for
Semenyo and his family, but the
22-year-old is keeping a level head
as he waits to see if he’ll be on the
flight for Qatar.
Just hours after arriving back in
the UK last week, following his
continues to monitor his recovery
having only recently returned from
a stress fracture shin injury.
He said: “Against Brazil that was
a very tough game, you could see
why they’re the best team in the
world. They were sharp, there was
quality everywhere so that a good
test for myself, to see where I am
technically and physically. In the
second game I got the last five
minutes, trying to be as effective
as possible but both games were
good games to watch and be
involved in.”
I THINK IT WAS GOOD FOR ME TO
BE SELECTED, DESPITE NOT HAVING
MANY MINUTES WITH BRISTOL CITY
THIS SEASON, BUT IT WAS ALWAYS
BEST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE AND
NOW I’M LOOKING TO DO MORE.
involvement with Ghana, Semenyo
told The Robins: “It was very good
in terms of that experience and
gelling with the group. There were
a few new players in the group too
so it was good to meet new players,
be around the squad. It’s always an
hour to be picked for your nation,
I’m buzzing from that and overall it
was a great experience.”
He did feature in both friendlies,
both as a late substitute as he
His involvement last month came
after his Ghana debut against
Madagascar back in June, which he
described as a “fantastic moment.”
Semenyo said: “I had so many
messages from friends and family
so that was fantastic and when
I got out there, it was so surreal.
The atmosphere was amazing,
people were singing, dancing and
it was a great homecoming, you
could say.”
So does he have one eye on bigger
things this winter? “I’d lying if
I said no but at the same time
I’m focused on my club football
and what we have to do here,”
Semenyo explained. “I’m just
focused on giving my all, scoring
goals and giving my best until
then. The World Cup is there but I
need to get in the team and stay
in the team with Bristol City first,
so I’m looking forward to starting
up again.
“I think it was good for me to be
selected, despite not having many
minutes with Bristol City this
season, but it was always best to
be on the safe side and now I’m
looking to do more. I’m fit now and
stronger than ever.”
For a player lacking in minutes
as he’s not rushed back from the
injury which meant he missed
pre-season, Semenyo has enjoyed
a good return with four goals in
less than two games worth of total
Semenyo applauds the fans after marking
his first game in City colours this season.
play time, scoring three goals in
consecutive games in August.
“I’m looking to do more now,” he
said. “It’s about getting my way
back into the starting XI but I know
that the other lads are doing well
up front. I just keep working on my
recovery so I can be as fresh as
though and I’m happy to provide
more, whether I start or come off
the bench.
“I feel I can contribute more now.
I’m having to fight my way into the
team but I’m ready to go out all
guns blazing.”
Having watched much of the action
from the sidelines or the bench,
Semenyo is all smiles to the camera, where he is joined by Matty James after scoring on his
return from injury at Wycombe Wanderers.
Semenyo believes he is part of a
team now showing its potential.
He said: “It has been really exciting.
We saw the potential at times last
season but we didn’t fulfil it. This
season, right from pre-season
the tempo was high and there’s
been a real buzz about the place.
I’m not surprised with how we’ve
played this season but now it’s
about consistency, keeping those
high performances going and
land ourselves in those play-off
positions.
“Rotation is going to be important,
but we have the sort of players
where we have great rotation
options. It’s important but we’re all
ready to go, everyone is showing
they’re ready when they’re called
upon.”
It’s been a tough start for the Sky Blues, who under Mark Robins have
enjoyed some real highs in recent seasons and are now into their thirdsuccessive
campaign in the Championship. However, on Tuesday night
they head to BS3 rock bottom of the table.
Poor pitch conditions mean the
club has not been able to play
at the Coventry Building Society
Arena as often as they hoped, in
fact they’ve only played twice at
home in the Championship so far
this season.
The 1-0 victory over
Middlesbrough at the weekend
was their first points of the
season, prior to that they had been
one of only three teams across the
Premier League and EFL without a
win to their name, the others being
the top flight’s Leicester City and
Hartlepool United of League Two.
Midfielder Gustavo Hamer is
suspended for Tuesday’s trip to
Ashton Gate as he continues to
serve a four-match ban. He was
sent off for a second bookable
offence in the 0-0 draw with
Birmingham City for what was his
second sending off this season.
But Callum O’Hare was pictured
back on the grass last week,
having been out for eight weeks
with a hamstring tear. The club will
be wary of bringing him back into
action too soon.
His return would be a welcome
one in the Sky Blues’ bid to
kickstart their campaign and climb
the table.
Mark Robins has been quoted as
saying “We don’t like being there -
it’s embarrassing, I’ve never been
there - so we just have to stick
together and keep going,” with
Coventry sat in 24th spot.
However, with games in hand,
all is not lost at this point in the
season, with the chance to build
momentum over the next six
weeks.
A former loanee at City back in 2003, Robins won the Football
League Trophy a month into the role in April 2017. He led the
club to a first top-six finish in 48 years in 2017/18 and two
promotions later, he steered Coventry into the Championship
with a 2019/20 record of just three defeats, unbeaten after
December 14th 2019.
STADIUM
LAST LINE-UP
The Coventry Building Society Arena has, on and
off, been the club’s permanent setting since 2005,
following a move from Highfield Road
which had been the Sky Blues’ home since 1889.
A Tommy Conway double, Kal Naismith’s
first Robins goal and Andi Weimann’s third
of the season helped City progress to
Round Two of the Carabao Cup.
Conway followed up Naismith’s 13th minute
opener with goals in the 18th and
30th minutes before Jamie Allen pulled a
goal back for the Sky Blues and Weimann
wrapped up proceedings.
Conway, Andy King, Cam Pring, Nahki Wells
and Kane Wilson got their first starts of the
season.
kicked off late due to traffic and would
end 2-2, with goals from Gerry Gow and
Don Gillies securing the most valuable
point. With Sunderland losing to
Everton the Black Cats were relegated,
while both City and the Sky Blues
secured top-flight status.
The striker is one of Coventry’s 2019/20 promotionwinning
stars, who scored 14 goals in League One.
In total he has scored 138 goals in a career spanning
12 seasons and nine different clubs.
The 31-year-old started his carer at Scunthorpe and
made his debut in the League Cup - a late appearance
off the bench in a 5-2 defeat to then competition
holders Manchester United.
After a number of loan spells in the lower regions of
the football pyramid, Canterbury-born Godden signed
for Ebbsfleet in 2014, but after two years and a place
in the 2015/16 National League South Team of the
Season, Godden signed for Stevenage where he netted
21 times during the 2016/17 times - his best return
in front of goal to take the club’s Player of the Year
award.
In June 2018 he signed for Peterborough United, but
made the move to Coventry a year later.
DOUBLE BRACE SINKS
CARDIFF
BRISTOL CITY
PROGRAMME
Sam Bell and Tommy Backwell
bagged a brace apiece and Dylan
Kadji hit a screamer as the Young
Robins beat Severnside rivals
Cardiff City 5-0.
First-half doubles from Bell and Backwell
got the ball rolling for a 4-0 lead before
Kadji added a fifth from outside the box in
the second half. Goalkeeper Stefan Bajic,
a summer signing, was selected for his
first appearance in City colours.
The game got off to a slow start with
chances few and far between as Cardiff
looked the most threatening early on with
Ollie Tanner bringing the first save of the
game from Bajic.
The Robins started to come to life as Bell
fired an effort narrowly wide of the post
from the edge of the box.
The Robins soon began to dominate
though and led when Seb Palmer-
Houlden’s header came back off the
crossbar for Backwell to capitalise.
Bell made the most of a lose ball before
making it 2-0, while a second for the
number nine would follow minutes later.
Harry Leeson’s endeavours down the
right-hand side were once again rewarded
as Bell expertly brought down his cross
and turned and finished in one motion.
The first half would get better for the
Robins as Palmer-Houlden capitalised
on another loose ball from Cardiff and it deny Raheem Conte’s low, driven effort
eventually came to Backwell who remained but in truth the Robins were always
composed to put us 4-0 up by the break. comfortable.
The break didn’t stop the flow of goals as Lead Professional Development Phase
on the hour-mark Kadji was afforded too Coach Ali Hines was particularly pleased
much room outside the box, and he fired a with Bell’s standout performance.
shot into the top corner.
He said: “Sam was brilliant today. He gets
his goals but his workrate for the team
The Young Bluebirds did see a goal was phenomenal, so I’m really pleased for
ruled out for offside, while Bajc saved to him and all the players today.”
Jay Dasilva’s cross.
Dan Bentley’s save from Duane Holmes and the woodwork denied the
A MATCH IN
Time
A GOOD OMEN
RINGS TRUE
1-3
DATE: OCTOBER 18TH 2014
COMPETITION: SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
PLAYED: RICOH ARENA
ATTENDANCE: 11,888 (3,794 AWAY)
Pack 11
Agard 45
Wagstaff 90
CITY LINE-UP: FIELDING, LITTLE, WILLIAMS, FLINT,
ELLIOTT, AYLING, PACK, FREEMAN, BRYAN, (WAGSTAFF 90),
WILBRAHAM (BURNS 90), AGARD (EMMANUEL-THOMAS 87).
The Robins needed to avoid defeat in this game to equal their best
undefeated start to a season of 13 games, set by the title-winning team
of 1954/55…a good omen. Referring to the magnificent 3,794 travelling
Robins fans, manager Steve Cotterill enthused post-match, “they won
us the game, no question.”
On 11 minutes, a long ball from defence skidded backwards off a Sky Blues
defender towards Aaron Wilbraham, having a tussle with his marker. While
appealing to the referee, Abraham kicked the ball against the defender and it
rebounded into the middle. It ran perfectly for midfielder Marlon Pack, who
went for the long shot and it flew inside the left post.
On the brink of half-time, a long ball from keeper Frank Fielding was headed on
by target man Wilbraham to Kieran Agard, who lobbed the ball past advancing
keeper Ryan Allsop and City fans behind the goal were already celebrating as
they could see it rolling towards the net.
Sky Blues sub Shaun Miller gave his side hope with 14 minutes to play, nipping
round Aden Flint and shooting high into the net. However, two late City subs
put the result beyond doubt in added time. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas received
the ball on half way and carried deep into Sky Blue territory. Many would have
been expecting a long shot but he fed Scott Wagstaff, who steamed into the
area with fresh legs and fired into the left corner to equal the record.
Fast-forward six months -- the omen rings true as the Robins win the title.
CITY WOMEN
Match Report
HALL OF FAME
Harry Dolman
City maintained their unbeaten
start to the FA Women’s
Championship in a 1-1 draw at
Ashton Gate on Sunday, September
25th.
Ffion Morgan netted her first goal of
the season in front of her onlooking
family as she latched on to Abi
Harrison ’s through ball to find the
top corner.
Morgan was the only change to
Lauren Smith’s side following
their win over Sunderland at the
Robins High Performance Centre
the weekend prior, coming into the
starting XI for Jesse Woolley.
The Robins started well and broke
the deadlock just shy of the halfhour
mark. Chloe Mustaki shifted
the ball inside to the waiting Abi
Harrison, she flicked the ball around
the corner to the advancing Morgan
who coolly picked out the top corner.
It was a deserved lead but it didn’t
take long for the visitors to level the
scores in the second period. In the
end neither side could find a decisive
Manager Smith felt her team should
have capitalised on their fast start.
She said: “It’s a bit frustrating - I
thought we could have put the game
to bed in the first 45 minutes.
“We had some really good chances,
probably could have had some
earlier chances perhaps and looked
after the ball a little better in the final
third.”
PAUL GAINEY REMEMBERS THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE GREAT HARRY DOLMAN
Harry Dolman, aka ‘Mr Bristol City’, rose from
humble rural roots in Wiltshire to become a multimillionaire
thanks to inventions, draughtsmanship
and engineering skills. Through his passion for the
game and sheer perseverance, he also played a
monumental part in the Bristol City’s post-war history.
He loved football and his business success led him to
Bristol City Football Club where he became director,
chairman and president. He pursued the dream of
top-flight football and a first-class stadium while
still designing machines that changed the way the
world worked. His amazing achievements included
designing the Dolman Stand and the first turnstiles
and floodlights at Ashton Gate.
He had more than 100 patents to his name; machines
ranged from the London Underground ticket machines
to chocolate vending machines, through to egg
grading, cigarette trimming and even a coin-slot
roulette wheel.
Chippenham-born Dolman served in the Wiltshire
Yeomantry during the First World War and later
joined the Bristol engineering firm Brecknell, Munro &
Rogers. There he was a junior draughtsman but later
became a director and so the machinery business was
renamed Brecknell, Dolman & Rogers. The company
was credited with producing turnstiles for the London
Underground.
He also pursued his other great passion – football.
He played locally for Yatton Keynell as a striker and
also for Brecknell’s work team, so keen was he to be
part of the game. When he wasn’t playing, he was
officiating as a Class One referee.
Harry was personally responsible for signing Bristol
City’s greatest player, John Atyeo and, as the story
goes, Dolman walked along a railway line to a signal
box where Atyeo’s father worked to get the contract
signed.
He manufactured the club’s first set of floodlights at
his Pennywell Road factory. They were switched on in
a friendly game with Wolves on January 27th, 1953.
When he retired as Chairman in 1974, he stayed
on as Bristol City’s first President and happily saw
Bristol City promoted back to Division One in 1976.
Just months after celebrating his 80th birthday, on
Wednesday, November 9th, 1977, Harry passed away.
But his legacy from finance, floodlights and futuristic
designs such as the East Stand which still bears his
name, lives on.
Obituaries
DENIS JARETT
We said goodbye to season ticket holder Denis, who
has passed away aged 66 after a brave battle with
cancer. He leaves behind his wife Michele, son Mike
and two sisters Rachel and Carolyn.
He was a known face in Section 82 and followed
Bristol City since he was young. His passion and love
for the club was infectious. His friends and family will
always cherish some great memories at Ashton Gate
and following the club he loved across the UK. He’ll
have a great seat up there and will never be far away.
He will always be missed by his friends and family.
KEITH SMITH
Keith Smith, the father of our programme contributor
Steve Smith, passed away in his sleep on September
5th, aged 85.
Keith attended his first match at Ashton Gate,
accompanied by his father Albert, in 1948 and was a
regular visitor before the Covid-19 pandemic.
GERALD PEARCE
The club is forever grateful to the late Gerald Pearce
who put together a wonderful legacy of a Bristol City
press cuttings archive.
City supporter Gerald passed away peacefully aged
89 at Southmead Hospital. He is dearly missed and
lovingly remembered by all of his family and friends.
For today’s match against Coventry City, the club is
proudly welcoming members of his family, including
wife Andrea as guests. We hope you have a lovely day.
Gerald of Downend collected his very first Bristol
City press cutting in 1945 and made it his life's
work collecting and maintaining his Bristol City
newspaper archive season by season - results, reports,
photographs and more - all diligently clipped and placed
into volumes and housed in a dedicated 'wardrobe' in
his spare room - a quite remarkable legacy.
It is a unique and priceless Bristol City collection
which at the time of Gerald's death in April 2022,
spanned 125 years, covering seasons 1897-2022 in 90
Volumes.
Contained within the volumes were also six pre-war
programmes and a historically important handwritten
leather bound book containing contemporary records
of fixtures, players, goals and results covering seasons
1897-1907, from the hand of founding Bristol City AFC
Director Mr. Joseph Daveridge (1864-1922).
Andrea has kindly made the archive available to the
BCFC Heritage and Archive Trust for scanning.
The entire archive together with a single leather bound
book into which founding Bristol City Director Joseph
Daveridge were stored in Geralds wardrobe in his
spare room. The Daveridge pages resemble something
very similar to the first team stats in the programme
today - opponents, referee, score, player and position.
It is one of the most valuable pieces of Bristol City
history in existence.
Thank you, Gerald.
Before the redevelopment of the stadium, he was a
valuable member of the volunteers who would sweep
the stands after match days.
Keith was a loving husband, father, grandad and great
grandad, who will be missed by all that knew him.
He is now reunited with wife, Barbara. God Bless to
you both.
Last time out: Nahki Wells in action against his former club, QPR, at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
Johnny Haynes’ Slazenger footwear that graced the 1958 World Cup finally got the
boot in favour of the iconic Adidas World Cup ’78. No kick-a-bout would ever be the
same again.
Meet the family 1978-1998: Top - Tango
Argentina 1978: Second row, left to right
– Tango Spain 1982; Etrusco Italy 1990:
Centre – Azteca Mexico 1986: Front
row, l to r: – Questra USA 1994; Tricolore
France 1998.
End of an era: The Terrestra was the last
time these circles were seen during Euro
2000 finals and best remembered for
England’s first win over West Germany in
a tournament since 1966.
With England missing out on
their second successive World
Cup in 1978, following all the
action down in Argentina with its
massive time difference was not
the most enjoyable experience.
However, it did bring a couple of
classic designs that I’ve managed
to hang on to.
Let’s start with the most important
item you need for the game of
football – The Ball. According to
the Laws of the Game, the ball is:
• Spherical
• Made of leather or other
suitable material
• Of a circumference of not more
than 28ins and not less than
27ins
• Not more than 16oz in weight
and not less than 14oz at the
start of the match
• Of a pressure equal to 0.6 – 1.1
atmosphere above atmospheric
pressure at sea level (8.5lbs/
sq.in – 15.6lbs/sq.in)
So, that’s the ball all sorted, now
for the design graphics boffins at
Adidas to get their thinking caps
on. And so it was, on Thursday
1st June 1978 the opening match
Full page advert with both items ready for Santa’s
between the World Cup holders,
West Germany and Poland, played
out a 0-0 draw using the now iconic
pattern on the Tango Rosario
football. Pity it didn’t enter either
net as for the fourth tournament
running there were no goals.
For the German manufacturer,
Adidas, it was the third successive
World Cup series that was using
their footballs. But unlike the
Telstar (Mexico 1970) and the
Telstar Durlast (West Germany
1974) which had a mixture of 32
black and white panels, the Tango
Rosario incorporated seven white
circles around its surface of now
20 panels, it still gave the TV
cameras a chance to follow the
ball in motion.
This basic design lasted 22-years
and had been used in both World
Cup and European Championships,
where it made its final appearance
at Euro 2000. Only the motif on
the three-point panels changed in
accordance with the host nation.
As for the World Cup ’78 boot, now
that’s another success story for
Adidas, who were the official kit
supplier to all the match officials
and a majority of the nation’s
taking part.
The black and white sole,
incorporating their iconic Trefoil
logo in the centre, was soon to
become a global success too.
However, there soon appeared
to be a technical design fault on
the plastic between the front and
middle studs, where the sole soon
developed a crack as the foot
bends. This was remedied by the
1986 finals in Mexico with a series
of red plastic lines running from
side to side, so breaking up the
pattern.
For kids in the park, there were
the original red plastic studs, but
for the professionals in the game,
these were replaced with the
aluminium alternative. Either way,
we all got a kick out of them.
A closer look at two wonderful
souvenirs from a World Cup tournament
that always had the live matches kicking
off near bedtime, due to the time
difference with South America
