3 PARISH POST
From the Vicar
The two minutes silence is a key part of the
Remembrance Day Service. Indeed, it is a key
part of the day for many who choose not to attend
a religious service.
Here are the thoughts which occupy the minds
of some of today’s young people (two
generations removed from the 2 nd World War)
during the two minutes’ silence:
“My grandpa fought in Africa, and was involved in
the liberation of Rome; my other grandpa fought
in Burma; and my great uncle died in Egypt. I am
so proud to be related to them.”
“I think no matter what side of the political fence,
creed, colour or religion, it is right to respect
those who fell (in all conflicts) by observing the
two minutes silence.”
“I think about my grandmother's family. Out of 10
children, 6 of the boys were killed during the 2 nd
World War. I think about the family I never had,
why it happened, and how proud I am of them.”
Where and with whom will our thoughts be
during the two minutes silence? The words of
these young people speak for us. We have every
reason to be thankful for the sacrifices made to
ensure our freedom and security.
Yet conflicts continue. The fear of terrorism
threatens to overwhelm us. Members of our own
families are at risk with the armed forces fighting
against it. And many would say, “all in the name
of religion.”
It is true that religion has been part of many of
the horrors of history. Remove it from the
equation, however, and the reasons for war and
terrorism still remain – hate, violence, prejudice,
injustice, the urge to dominate and control…..
Whoever and whatever fills our thoughts as
we keep the two minutes silence on 12
November let us lift them in prayer to the God
who is life and love and peace. To carry out acts
of aggression upon other human beings in the
name of any religion is a perversion of religion.
In 2005 Operation Christmas Child sent gift-filled
shoe boxes to more than 1.18 million children in
desperate situations in 13 different countries.
The gifts are given to children, regardless of
nationality, political background or religious
beliefs. Nothing is required of them, their families
or communities in return.
So let us pack our shoe boxes with small toys,
school supplies, sweets, and other gifts and bring
them to the Family service on 5 November.
5 PARISH POST
For the Fallen
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow
old…….
These very famous words are printed opposite
in the context of the complete poem by Laurence
Binyon that he called The Fallen. It was first
published in the Times newspaper on
21 September 1914. As this was very early in the
war, it was written as a reaction to the high
casualty rates of the British Expeditionary Force
at Mons and Le Cateau, but the verse has now
taken an existence of their own that apply to all
war casualties:
British poet and scholar, Laurence Robert
Binyon was born in Lancaster on 10th August
1869. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford
and won the Newdigate Prize for his poem
"Persephone" whilst there. After university he
worked as a curator in the Oriental Department of
the British Museum.
Too old to join the BEF, he went to the Western
front as a Red Cross medical orderly and
returned to the British Museum after the war.
After his retirement in 1933, he was appointed
Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University
followed by the appointment as Byron Professor
of English Literature at Athens University.
In his lifetime, he wrote numerous works on Far
Eastern Art, several plays, a translation of Divine
Comedy by Dante and the first part of an
Arthurian trilogy called The Madness of Merlin,
the latter only published in 1947 after he had
died.
He died on 10th March 1943 and is buried at
Saint Mary's Church, Aldworth, Berkshire.
For The Fallen
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her
children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were
young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds
uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow
old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years
condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes
profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are
known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are
dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our
darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
CHELFORD VILLAGE PRE-SCHOOL
November 2006
A warm welcome to Owen and Jack who have
recently enrolled at the pre-school.
Last half terms theme “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”
proved very popular with all the children. Some of the
older children amazed us with their ability to recall the
narrative and their confidence to act out the story.
Our younger children enjoyed using their imaginations
and using their bodies to curl up like eggs, wriggle like
caterpillars, pop out of cocoons and dance like a
butterflies.
The highlight of the half term was when the “Bugman”
came to visit us.
He entertained and fascinated the children throughout
the morning with his special blue box of amazing
creatures which included giant stick insects,
10 inch millipedes, scorpions, giant snails and huge
hairy spiders.
As the beginning of this half term coincides with
National Road Safety Week we have decided to have
“Stop, Look and Listen” as our theme focusing on road
safety. We have lots of activities planned to fire the
children’s imagination and have also arranged to
borrow role play items which will reinforce the children’s
learning such as a zebra crossing, traffic lights, lollypop
lady/man outfit, road signs and various other items.
As always the last three weeks of the half term will be
devoted to Christmas activities and many rehearsals
for the nativity play.
The staff will be updating their training by attending
several courses including “Birth to 3 Matters,” First Aid,
“An Introduction to High/Scope learning.” and a
manager’s meeting devoted to “Key issues affecting
the childcare sector”
I have a dream
I have a dream,
A farmer’s dream,
I dream that one day,
We farmers shall all get an equal pay,
The price of milk won’t be unfair
It will be the same price everywhere.
I have a dream,
A farmer’s dream,
I dream that awful paper work will be halved,
That inspectors shall be no more,
We don’t need them; we are not breaking the law,
All we want to do is farm and do what we are
here for.
I have a dream,
A farmer’s dream,
I dream one day the weather will work our way,
You need a good hot day to make sweet smelling
hay,
Rain at night and sunshine all day,
Will make life easier for us all the way.
I have a dream,
A farmer’s dream,
I dream that dreaded TB will not exist,
The life of cows and wildlife will persist,
Badgers and birds will not bring fear,
The end of slaughtering and all the tears.
Kathryn Tipping
Kathryn, grand-daughter of Mrs Beryl Bailey, recited her poem
as part of our Harvest Festival Service last month.
Remembering
Why do you march old man, with medals on your
chest?
Why do you grieve old man, for those friends you
laid to rest?
Why do your eyes still gleam old man, when you
hear the bugles blow?
Tell me, why do you cry old man for those days
so long ago?
I’ll tell you why I march with medals on my chest,
I’ll tell you why I grieve young man for those I laid
to rest.
Through misty fields of gossamer silk come
visions of distant times,
When the boys of tender age marched forth to
distant lines.
We buried them in a blanket shroud, their young
flesh scorched and blackened,
A communal grave, newly gouged in
bloodstained gorse and bracken.
And you ask me why I march young man –
I march to remind you all.
That but for those apple-blossomed youths,
you’d never have known freedom at all.
COMMUNITY PRIDE COMPETITION -2006
COMMUNITY VIBRANCY AWARDS
The Cheshire Community Pride Competition
co-ordinated by Cheshire County Council
provides all communities across the sub region of
Cheshire Warrington and Halton the opportunity
to celebrate the valued work of community
volunteers in making Cheshire a better place to
live and work.
The Community Pride Competition was formerly
known as the Best Kept village Competition and
was initiated with the aim of developing and
highlighting a sense of pride amongst local
people throughout Cheshire.
Since is conception in 1957 the Competition
has been expanded from the initial focus on the
amount of care that residents gave to their village
and local areas to encompass
key themes that increase sustainability and
improve the quality of life for residents.
This diversification was accompanied by a
change of name from The Best Kept Village to
the Community Pride Competition.
The award categories include :-
Best Kept Village
Community Vibrancy
Cheshire Countryside and Wildlife Award
Community Safety Award
Community Project Award
The Parish Council entered the Best Kept
Village and Vibrancy elements of the Competition
as a combined entry of Ollerton with Marthall..
Following the initial written submission where
detailed questions were required to be answered
to outline the villages their facilities and how the
facilities were used to the benefit of the
Community we received notification that we had
been short listed in the Community Pride Element
of the competition and a Panel of Judges would
like to visit and discuss in more detail the
information provided in the initial entry
submission.
This duly took place in the Village Hall where
the judges interviewed a panel of people
representing the interests across the age groups
and organisations in the village and how the
facilities in the village e.g. The Church, Village
Hall ,Moss Wood Nature Reserve, Local
Businesses, were used to the best advantage for
the community.
Everyone in attendance made a tremendous
contribution to the meeting and clearly to the
judging panel, to the extent that in due course we
received notification that Ollerton with Marthall
had been awarded second place to Antrobus in
the 2006 Competition, along with an invitation to
attend the awards ceremony at Tatton Park at the
end of September .
Unfortunately Alan Street as Chairman of the
Parish Council could not attend as he was on
Holiday and therefore Jenny Holmes and myself
as having responsibilities for the Competition on
behalf of the Parish Council had the pleasure of
receiving the award of a Certificate and a cheque
for £150 donated by Shell UK . It was a proud
moment for both of us to have Ollerton and
Marthall recognised in this way in front of 300+
representatives from across Cheshire .
Following the excitement of the evening it gives
time to reflect on how fortunate we all are to live
in Ollerton and Marthall and to be able contribute
the vibrancy of the two villages.
Don’t let your child’s birthday party stress
you out!
What happened to the good old days when a
child’s birthday party was simple and fun – if a bit
hectic? Now it seems as if many competitive
parents are making themselves ill with worry
about whether the party they organise for their
child’s birthday will be as much fun as those
thrown by other parents.
A recent survey of childrens’ birthday trends
has discovered that parents spend an average of
£129 on a child’s birthday party – and are three
times more likely to experience a stomach upset
in the run-up to the big day than their child is!
Children in the survey said they would happily
give up the lavish party gimmicks and go back to
basics with party games. It is the moms and dads
who insist on the bouncy castles, Harry Potter
accessories, and goody-bags stuffed with DVDs.
And often that is just for starters…
