Parish Hall - the cost so far
Diana Ruff (right), a former chair
of Wingerworth Parish Council
and present chair of NE
Derbyshire District Council,
offers her views on the
Wingerworth Parish Hall saga
I
4
AM writing this article in direct
response to criticisms raised by
Coun Helen Nelms at the full Wingerworth Parish
Council meeting on Thursday, 14th July, regarding
expenditure on the refurbishment of the Parish Rooms.
The following is a short, but accurate, synopsis of the events
regarding proposals that were considered. The facts must be both
shared and addressed.
In 2013, the then parish council look a long, hard and
dispassionate ‘look’ at the Parish Rooms. The general agreement
was that following many years of general neglect and poor
maintenance, the council really needed to
start making some serious decisions about
what needed to be done.
The ‘exploratory stage’ was to seek
advice from Derbyshire County Council
with regards to a feasibility study in order
to gather some idea of the scope and
costings for various options. The initial
brief was to look at options for
refurbishment or a new build.
From 2014 until April, 2019 was a period
that included many aspects from engaging
with residents through to questionnaires,
public meetings and consultations.
Working groups were set up, including
members of the public.
During this period, the services of professional bodies were
engaged to look at various aspects, one to conduct a structural
survey on the Parish Rooms, two to draw up ideas/plans for a
refurbishment and three to draw up ideas/plans for a new build.
There were five’options initially to consider: 1, Refurbish the
present building; 2, A new build on Allendale; 3, Demolish the
present building and rebuild on the present site; 4, Keep the
original building (the library end) and demolish the rest of the
building or - as some members of the public suggested - 5,
“Do nothing”. They didn’t use the building. To do nothing was
not an option; the other four all came with their own challenges,
S
OME residents who live near
Wingerworth Parish Hall say
lights planned to be installed around
the car park will adversely affect their
properties.
One of the objectors, Coun Ian Eames,
sits on Wingerworth Parish Council, the
body that is proposing the new lighting in
its refurbishment of the Parish Hall.
He said it would be excessive in
brightness and posed a danger to
pedestrians from drivers with low night
vision because of the glare, and a serious
light pollution to neighbours. Four
neighbouring properties had a very clear
view of the car park.
“For many years we have put up with a
very poor lighting scheme involving two
large floodlights, one at each end of the
Work is nearing completion at
Wingerworth Parish Hall
Concern over
car park lights
car park flooding the car park and the
surrounding gardens with light, as well as
illuminating the rooms that face on to the
car park,” he said.
Coun Eames said several complaints had
been made to the parish council and they
had been assured the new lighting scheme
would offer low-level, discrete, illumination
of the car park to resolve their issues.
Another neighbour said: “This new
scheme was applied for long after
refurbishment began and at no time has
there been any consultation with residents.
pitfalls and costs.
After years of investigations, in 2017, the council took the view
that enough was enough, and voted for a “new build” (vote: 13-1).
The council decided that as this would be such a major project,
having an impact on the precept, that a public referendum should
be held so that the residents of Wingerworth could decide between
a “new build” or to refurbish the present building. The result from
the referendum was to refurbish the Parish Rooms.
The Project Outlay in the period 2013 – April 2019 was £18,360
(the total previous council spend).
Let’s look at the period from May 2019-2020. The May election
saw several new members elected to the council, one being the
afore-mentioned Coun Helen Nelms. The spend during this period
alone, covering professional services and fees for a planning
application, added an additional £31,945.42.
In July 2020, I resigned from the council for several reasons, one
being my appointment to a new position at NE Derbyshire District
Council; also the decline in my husband’s health, and the fact that l
felt that l simply could not support a refurbishment proposal at the
newly estimated cost.
The “spend” during the period 2020-2022 covers various
professional fees and totals £27,307.08.
The Project Outlay during the period May
2019-2022 was a total of £59,252.50.
(Present council spend)
To summarise, the refurbishment project
costs to date are: Before work/loan
application, £ 77,612.50; Loan,
£931,673.80 (Loan repayment breakdown:
annual repayment £46,980.50), (Loan
repayment over the 30-year term:
£1,407,255); Other monies set aside from
council reserves: £160,00. Spend at the
time of writing is £104,900.
The total spend to date, as at July/August
2022, is £1,114,185.
All figures shown were supplied by the Parish Council clerk under
the Freedom of Information Act.
One suggestion that l would make to the present council is,
before casting criticism on previous councils, that they take a long,
hard look at themselves and work towards mending what l, along
with numerous other residents, consider is to be a very fractured
parish council.
• Wings invited the parish council to comment on Coun Ruff’s
article and we received the following response: “The parish council
would like to state that there are some inconsistencies in the letter
and will provide a detailed response in due course.”
If a neighbour had not noticed the tall
posts being elevated we would not have
been aware of this.
“The proposed lighting will make an
existing problem even worse. It appears to
me that this lighting scheme is totally
unnecessary for this minimal use car park
and will simply cause untold misery and
aggravation for residents.”
A Wingerworth Parish Council
spokesperson said: “The application is
currently with the planning team at NE
Derbyshire District Council. The council is
following the advice and recommendations
of the contractors, and the survey it has
undertaken as part of the planning for the
scheme.”
The Parish Hall is due to re-open on
October 31st.

Village views obscured by
overgrown hedgerows
Wingerworth’s Antony and
Michael Natt explain how
much more could be enjoyed
of the beauty surrounding
Wingerworth if hedges
were kept in trim
W
6
INGERWORTH is set in
beautiful countryside. It is a
great privilege to be able to walk
across Lavender Hill towards and
around the Great Pond of Stubbing
and beyond to Swathwick hamlet
and then back again. One absorbs
the surrounding tranquillity, the
varied sights and sounds of nature
whilst also enjoying casual
conversations with fellow dog
walkers.
However, there are many Wingerworth
residents who cannot venture into the
countryside as far as they would wish.
Easy accessibility to such views is
therefore key to their enjoyment of, and benefits from the
surrounding countryside. The stunning views and vistas that are
highlighted in the Wingerworth Neighbourhood Plan could still
yet enhance their wellbeing. Strategically placed, accessible chat
benches (part of the Let’s Chat Derbyshire campaign), with
outstanding views, would also allow for more isolated residents
to benefit from connecting both with nature and with other
people. This would have great potential benefit for their health
and wellbeing, and counter social isolation and loneliness.
Sadly, some of these magnificent views remain largely invisible
to many, hidden behind overgrown hedgerows. Witness the
dramatic change when one such hedgerow on New Road,
opposite Deer Park School, was cut back earlier this year. This
revealed a panoramic view towards Hardwick woods for all to
enjoy.
Regrettably, there is presently no suitably positioned chat bench
from which this view can be enjoyed at leisure in the company of
others.
Contrast this with the very
favourably positioned chat bench
situated at the junction of Hilltop
Road and Swathwick Lane. This
should enjoy one of the four views
that receive particular mention and
praise in the Wingerworth
Neighbourhood Plan. This tells us of
'180 degree views southwest -
attractive and mainly open
countryside towards and
incorporating Bole Hill'.
In reality, and for some time, this
view has been entirely obscured by
a 3m high hedgerow. Traditionally,
farmers have maintained their
hedgerows at 1-2m, but as more of
Vistas on New Road, Wingerworth, revealed after hedge cutting
Bench situated on Swathwick Lane, near the
junction with Hilltop Road, showing any view
is completely obscured by the hedgerow
our countryside has come under more varied ownership, the
height of hedgerows may differ considerably, as is the case here.
However, with such countryside ownership, should come a
sense of duty and responsibility for that land and to fellow
residents. In this case, an easily accessible, potentially lifeenhancing
view could be revealed to those who are most in need
of it and would most benefit from it.
Regular, considerate, responsible, simple stewardship of such
hedgerows would transform the wellbeing of many Wingerworth
residents and enhance the beautiful setting of our parish.
This particular hedgerow may well become a permanent fixture,
required to conceal a new development that includes a 100-plus
solar panel array.
At the time of writing, the agricultural field obscured by the
hedgerow, and which is countryside outside the Wingerworth
Settlement Development limit, is the subject of a further planning
application. This is the second time that the applicants have
submitted such a proposal, this time to be complemented by an
extensive underground geothermal
heating system throughout the rest
of the field. It will primarily serve a
residential purpose.
There are hard choices to be made
if the vision for the countryside of
the Wingerworth Neighbourhood
Plan is to be fulfilled. Never before
has our surrounding countryside
been in so much need of carefully
considered, just and firm regulation
to determine and safeguard its
future.
For further information about
connecting with nature, see ‘Nature
and Me’ booklet by National
Trust/University of Derby, 2021.

Autumn is always a wonderful
time of the year with the return
of misty mornings, beautiful
sunrises and sunsets, leaves
turning into an array of
wonderful colours and the kids
going back to school (yay!)
However, it also serves as an
important reminder that winter
is just around the corner. With
the cost of living crisis and our fuel costs rising,
we spoke to John Leverton (pictured), owner of
Wingerworth-based Boiler Care Plus Ltd, to get
his top tips on getting your home ready for the
cold months ahead. With over 20 years’
experience in the heating industry, John is
skilled in installing and maintaining boilers to
ensure they operate reliably and efficiently.
HERE are a number of things we can do to ensure
T our homes are ready for winter and reduce our
energy usage and cost:
Programmers
Setting your central heating programmer and thermostat
onto a timed programme with a pre-set temperature control is
the most efficient way to control your heating. John reminded
us that reducing your room thermostat down by just one
degree could save you up to £200 per year (between 1-3%)
on your heating bill. If you don’t have a thermostat and
programmer, it may be worth considering upgrading your
heating system.
Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
These are basically mini-room thermostats fitted to your
radiator. Most TRVs have numbers 1 to 5 on them and can be
adjusted by twisting the head of the TRV.
Setting the TRV to No 3 will give you a room temperature of
approximately 20deg. The higher the number, the hotter the
room will be.
The table below illustrates the ideal settings based on the
room type to set your TRVs:
By installing TRVs you could save up to 18% on your heating
bill so it is worth checking whether you have them on every
radiator and, if so, adjusting the settings according to room
type.
Radiators
An important thing to check ahead of winter is that your
radiators are working correctly. This is important as it ensures
your boiler can send the heat where it is needed the most
and doesn’t stay on for longer than required.
To check your radiators, you will need to turn on your
heating. If the radiator is cold at the top, then it will need to
be vented. If the radiators are cold at the bottom and hot at
the top, you will need a qualified heating engineer to
diagnose the issue correctly.
Boilers
Making sure your boiler is working efficiently is a good way
to save you money.
If you have a condensing boiler, try setting the heating
control to two-thirds of the way up (this has to be done on the
boiler itself) and not all the way up. This should ensure that
the boiler will condensate more and use less gas.
Having your boiler serviced once a year is a great way to
ensure any unseen issues are picked up and could prevent
costly breakdowns in the winter months.
At Boiler Care Plus, we offer both boiler servicing and boiler
cover plans to suit.
Other ways of saving on your heating
Wings
Boiler Care - and much more
There are some other key tips that can help save money on
your heating bills such as:
• Having showers instead of baths.
• Keeping internal doors closed.
• Closing external doors and windows.
• Sealing unwanted draughts (please be aware, however if
you have a open-flued appliance a vent may be required for
this).
• Check that your wall and roof insulation is sufficient.
• Make sure your double-glazing is in good order.
• Repair any water leaks, dripping taps, etc.
• Turning your thermostat down if you go out for the day or
for a long period.
• Simply add an extra layer of clothing.
Anger over
response to
travellers
A
12
WINGERWORTH parish councillor has
criticised the police response to a group
of travellers trespassing on the car park near
the Avenue park and newly-built housing
estates.
In their second trespass this year, the travellers are
alleged to have cut through a padlock and stayed
for several days.
During that time, on September 4th, an ice cream
van being driven around the new estate was
allegedly stopped in the street by a group from the
site who blocked the road and then made off with
£96 of ice cream without paying.
The owner rang the police but they refused to
come out. Later, nearby residents had a whip-round
and made up the money he had lost.
A woman walking her dog also alleged that a
group of children tried to get her pet and lead off
her and wanted her ear-rings. She said she was
calling the police to which the reply was “We’re the
law here now”.
Parish councillor Ross Shipman criticised the
‘Illegal Encampment Taskforce’ set up by the
Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner.
He said: “The Commissioner and local councils wax
lyrical about the ‘fantastic’ work of this so called
‘Illegal Encampment Taskforce’, but here’s the thing:
It’s a talking shop, it doesn’t take any decisions and
it doesn’t even force the hand of Derbyshire Police
to use the existing powers they have to remove
them. It merely puts all the onus on the landowner,
to go down the civil route in court, at great cost to
them, or me and you as taxpayers.
Encampments
So what can be done? Instead of talking shops, the
PCC and Chief Constable need to get together,
make sure resource is available and start issuing
Section 61 notices when there are illegal
encampments that fall within the criteria needed to
issue them.
“In three years of being elected to serve Tupton
and Wingerworth, every single illegal encampment I
have been involved in has met the criteria to issue a
Section 61 notice.”
The Travellers moved on after legal action was
taken by the Lands’ Trust, who run the Avenue
country park.
A spokesperson said: “Working alongside our
managing partners, as and when the Lands’ Trust
experiences travellers trespassing on one of its
sites, we firstly instruct our solicitors to serve notice
on the individuals to leave. We then instruct bailiffs
who undertake the liaison and legal process to
secure the land back again and clean up any
damage or mess left on the site. We cannot disclose
the fees paid to our solicitors or bailiffs to undertake
this work.”
Police were invited to comment but were unable to
do so.
Wingerworth, said: “This is another reminder of what a lovely, supportive
community we live in.”
Lucy was ten months old when she was diagnosed with a rare, malignant
brain tumour eight years ago.
She underwent nine hours of emergency brain surgery at Sheffield
Children’s in August, 2014, as well as several rounds of chemotherapy and
stem cell treatment, and spent the next five months on the Cancer and
Leukaemia ward.
Today, Lucy remains under the care of various teams at Sheffield Children’s
Hospital, managing the after-effects of treatment, but MRI scans continue to
show no evidence of a relapse.
Tracey said: “Every year that passes is a huge milestone for us. She is doing
remarkably well and is loving life.”
Tracey will be abseiling down the Owen Building at Sheffield Hallam
University on October 8th, together with eight other members of Team Lucy
to raise money for the hospital.
Over the last three years, the Team Lucy fundraising has been devoted to
the appeal to build a new cancer and leukaemia ward at the hospital. It
opened to patients in December, 2021, bigger and brighter with improved
spaces for parents to stay with their children.
Tree troubles
V
OLUNTEERS who helped plant thousands of trees in
Wingerworth were disappointed when a large number of
them had to be moved and replanted, or were allegedly killed by
weed-killing spray.
Parish councillor Frank Adlington-Stringer said: “The majority of trees have
survived but this is because not all were treated equally. The county council
only sprayed those on the Deer Park, which explains the higher rate of success
on Chartwell and Adlington.”
He said that NE Derbyshire District Council requested that about 15 trees had
to be moved because they were on land they owned, although the parish
council has been negotiating transfer of ownership, and other trees which were
erroneously planted on land owned by the medical centre had also been
replanted elsewhere.
A row of trees planted next to the path alongside the cricket pitch
mysteriously disappeared.
Scams warning
T
RADING standards officers want Wings area residents to be
wary of cold callers and doorstep sellers, advising if you’re not
sure, don’t open the door.
Unscrupulous traders in Derbyshire are currently trying to sell spray foam
insulation or ventilation systems that are just not needed. Homeowners are told
the insulation they currently have in their property is likely to cause damage,
such as damp, or is soon to become illegal. This is not true.
Another scam involves cold-calling elderly residents posing as builders and
offering to carry out roof repairs, driveways and gardening work at a special
price.
There have been incidents where offenders have also offered to transport the
victims to the bank so they can withdraw the money needed for the work to be
carried out.

Valley reveals its past life
Pictures: Claire Davison
Wings
Months of dry weather have caused water
shortages throughout the UK. Rivers and
streams have dried to a trickle and water in
some lakes and ponds has disappeared altogether
N
OWHERE is the drought more evident than at the
reservoirs just over the hills in the Derwent Valley.
When they were built between 1935 and 1943, the picturesque villages of
Ashopton and Derwent were sacrificed. Once they were submerged,
everyone thought they had gone forever.
However, in subsequent years of low rainfall, some of the ruins of the old
buildings have been seen. This happened in the dry summers of 1976, 1995
and 2018 and now again in 2022.
Local photographer Claire Davison ranks the area around Derwent,
Ladybower and Howden Dams as one of her favourite places in Derbyshire.
Some of her most spectacular images have shown water cascading over
the downfall at Derwent Dam.
This year, however, she has made several trips here to record the falling
water levels and photograph some of the relics and foundations which
have emerged. On these pages she shares some of her
favourite images.
People travelling to the Derwent Valley to view and
photograph the relics from the lost villages have been advised
to stick to regular roadways and footpaths as exploring out
into the mud on foot can be dangerous. One man had to be
rescued after he became stuck for several hours while
inspecting the ruins.
Telephone befriending for elderly
A
FRIENDLY voice can make all the difference if you
feel lonely or isolated, so meet local charity
BrightLife which provides a telephone befriending
service for older people.
BrightLife might be a name which readers haven’t heard before,
but it is the day-to-day name adopted in 2021 by Age Concern
Chesterfield and District.
Based in Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, BrightLife provides a
telephone befriending service to people over the
age of 55 living in Chesterfield, Bolsover and NE
Derbyshire. The service is provided by a dedicated
team of volunteer Befrienders from Monday to
Friday.
The history of BrightLife goes right back to the
Second World War which prompted the setting up of
an Old Peoples Welfare Committee by the Council of
Social Service in 1940. The committee aimed to
improve the situation for older people and gained
national recognition.
In 1944, it became known as the National Old People’s Welfare
Committee, incorporating a range of organisations working at a
local level, to improve older people's lives.
In 1946, Chesterfield Borough Council was the first authority in
Derbyshire to establish an Old People’s Welfare Committee in the
town.
In 1971, the National Older People’s Welfare Committee adopted
the name of Age Concern and in 1992 there was another key step
in the journey when North Derbyshire Health Authority funded a
part-time officer located in and managed by Age Concern
Chesterfield to introduce an Advocacy Service aimed at preventing
loneliness.
BrightLife
Ann Monk, BrightLife’s chief officer, explained that the pandemic
revealed many of the issues that lonely and isolated people have
had in the past are still a problem for older people today.
She said: “Loneliness and isolation occurs for many reasons; but
one that has been highlighted during the pandemic is that many
people do not live near their families. More families have both
adults working.
“The days have gone where families lived in the same area and
supported each other. Many families live and work away from the
area their older relatives live in.
“A member of a couple may have lost their partner
or someone they provided care for and find it
difficult to mix with others now they are on their
own. Many carers become lonely if they have cared
for someone for a long time because they have lost
contact with their friends and community.
“An older person may have been housebound or
have mobility problems and cannot get out of
their home and they too become forgotten if
they do not have family or friends who can help and encourage
them.”
One man who lives alone and has benefitted from the
befriending service said: “It is lovely to hear your voice on the
phone as the only other voice I hear is on the television.
“Sometimes I feel as if I am invisible.”
BrightLife is always looking for more volunteers and would love to
hear from anyone interested.
All volunteers receive training and are fully supported by staff.
Anyone who would like to volunteer or would like a call from a
befriender, contact Ann on 01246 273333 or email
Remember, remember
the 5th of November
W
INGERWORTH Scouting are looking
forward to welcoming everyone to the
annual bonfire on Saturday, 5th November.
The event is again being held at Nethermoor Farm,
Nethermoor Road, where the event has been staged
since 2005.
Attending a local community event rather than having
your own fireworks can minimise environmental impact.
It reduces potential air pollution and limits the amount
of time when there is loud noises. Organisers are proud
that most people walk to the event.
They are also exploring ways to reduce environmental
impact including firework amount and types, bonfire
size and use of gas/electric.
There will still be all the usual highlights of the event -
bonfire, fireworks, food including the famous bonfire
toffee, along with hot and cold drinks. A licensed bar
application has been made.
Tickets will be on sale through Deer Park and Hunloke
schools, the Scout Hutt off Longedge Lane and the
Parish Hall .
Early Bird tickets are available until 22nd October:
family £7, adult £3, child £1.50. There are also advance
discounts to November 4th, plus on-the-night admission
of adult £5, child £2.
Anyone who wishes to help sponsor the event or offer
help in any way should contact the Group Scout Leader,
Denise Booth, on 07927 607320. Suitable wood for the
fire can be taken to the site before 11.30am.
in August had the theme of The
Queen’s Reign.
Little could organisers have
anticipated that Her Majesty’s reign
was soon to end.
The Sunday Flower Service was led by
Anne Knyhynyckyj of Wingerworth. The
Chapel had a record number of visitors
and at one point on the Saturday it was
full and a queue was formed down the
aisle waiting for refreshments.
Donations for refreshments amounted
to £628 for the work with children and
families in the Ukraine. Marjorie
Ashgate Hospice and raised a
wonderful £460.
King Charles III’s local links
Do you have memories of seeing - or
even meeting - King Charles III on
any of his many visits to Derbyshire?
K
ING Charles III has made several visits to meet people and
organisations here in north Derbyshire and the Peak District
down the years.
Chesterfield people of a certain age will recall with fondness the day in 1981
when the Prince of Wales, accompanied by Diana, the then Princess of Wales,
visited the town centre, to
be greeted by a mass of
onlookers in the Market
Square.
After arriving by
helicopter, the couple
waved to the crowds
from the balcony of the
Market Hall and officially
opened the town’s exciting
new Pavements shopping
complex.
Making the event
particularly special was the
recent announcement that
the couple were expecting
their first child - the future
Prince William.
The Prince of Wales was
back in Chesterfield in
1988, attending celebrations
for the tercentenary of
conspirators meeting at
Revolution House, Old
Whittington, to plan what
would become the
Glorious Revolution, an
invitation to William of
Orange to take the throne
of England in place of
James II.
The future King officially
re-opened the thatched
Revolution House building
following extensive
restoration.
In 1996, the then Prince of
Wales visited the village of
Cromford and also
Cromford Mill where he
gave a speech.
In 2015 he reopened the
restored Wirksworth
Railway Station.
Clay Cross Town Centre Group
W
elcome to this autumn issue of the Clay Cross Town
Centre Group News. These are exciting times for Clay
Cross as the Clay Cross Town Deal moves forward. In
particular, progress has been made with commissioning rail
consultants to explore the potential to introduce a rail station
to the town which, with the continuing housing developments,
is growing in size and popularity.
Another significant project of the Town Deal is the planned
replacement, on the same site, of Sharley Park Leisure Centre
with a new community hub that is to include a leisure centre,
health provision and support services which will benefit Clay
Cross and its surrounding districts.
Focussing on the here and now, both High Street and Market
Street continue to provide an independent retail and service
experience with relatively new businesses operating alongside
those that are long established.
Shoppers and visitors can still conveniently park without charge
for 2 hours at the short stay car parks on Market Street and Eyre
Street and the bus station off of Bridge Street and Market Street,
which serves the surrounding local districts such as Ashover,
Tupton, North Wingfield, Wingerworth, Pilsley and Danesmoor,
is close to the town centre for those travelling by bus.
For those wishing to park for longer than 2 hours long stay car
parks close to the town centre are located at the top of
Holmgate Road, close to the High Street junction, next to
Iceland on Market Street with a further car park adjacent to
the bus station, accessed by turning right at the Tesco store
mini roundabout off of Bridge Street/Harris Way.
As many of you will know, Clay Cross High Street forms part
of the main A61 road from Alfreton to Chesterfield which at
peak times carries a lot of traffic and could become busier
with the new housing and commercial developments taking
place.
A Derbyshire County Council survey questionnaire which is
open until 16 October 2022 can be completed to say how you
use the road and what you think about some potential options
to improve it, see https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/council/have-
your-say/consultation-search/consultation-details/a61-south---
your-chance-to-shape-the-future.aspx
Additionally with the continuing focus on reducing carbon
emissions, Clay Cross Parish Council is carrying out a Clay
Cross residents climate change survey which can be
completed using the link https://www.claycross.gov.uk/claycross-parish-council-reside.html
Autumn 2022
As there continue to be challenges with increasing costs,
making use of the shops and services which are close and
convenient to where you live avoids the need to spend money
on extra journeys, reduces shopper miles carbon emissions
wise, and supports local businesses too.
Often the small independent trader can provide products and
services that aren’t always stocked in large chain stores and, if
you are looking for something slightly unusual, then the
established shopping areas of High Street and Market Street
are worth a visit.
Also look out for Fiver Fest deals from participating
independent shops and businesses, the next Fiver Fest is due
to take place between 8th to 22nd October 2022 and will
include deals from Becks Rock Box on the High Street and 5a
Botanicals on Market Street.
Although we continue to have fewer restrictions in place
relating to coronavirus, as the cooler weather approaches we
can remind ourselves of the steps we can take to reduce the
risk of catching and spreading Covid 19, see Coronavirus
(COVID-19): guidance and support - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Clay Cross Social Centre, on Market Street, can be hired for
events such as parties, wedding receptions, public meetings
etc and continues to have regular activities including Bingo
every Wednesday from 6.30pm; admission is FREE! Six games
£2.50/1Flyer £2. Pauline & John Stringfellow host their social
mixed sequence dance every Thursday evening from 7pm,
admission is £2.50 per person. Our ever-popular Christmas
Market will be held on Saturday 26 November 2022 from
Lane. Also, a new barn and the retention of existing concrete
hardstanding upon which the barn and part of the solar panel
display will be located.
The proposal is to create a comprehensive sustainable energy
plan for the Old Rectory to include the provision of an extensive
ground-source heating system within the agricultural land to the
north-west. The ground source heating pipes produce water at
50deg C which is fed into large tanks (in the proposed barn) but
to give effective heating, that water needs to be at 70deg C,
which is why Mr Rhodes wants the row of solar panels. The barn
would also accommodate batteries to store the solar energy for
use in dull weather.
It is proposed that the solar panels would be displayed in
linear form with a service track separating them from the
Derbyshire Girls League and train on
Wednesday evenings. Contact is
Dale Holland, WJSA vice-chair, said:
“This season we welcome three brand
new under-7 teams, The Vipers, Tigers
and Falcons.
The club is voluntary run and heavily
relies on local companies who
sponsor the teams playing kits. This
season Wings has been a massive
help as two of the sponsors were
found from the advert section of the
magazine.
“WJSA would like to thank this year’s
sponsors Dave Stone Design, CHN Financial Consultancy and
Acupuncture Chesterfield by Rosa Vilaseca.
“We still have places left for our Little Dudes sessions. These
are Monday evenings 6.30-7.30pm.
The club is to stage a fundraiser, a 90s disco, at the Parish
Rooms.
Solar panels plan for historic property’s grounds
A
boundary hedgerow, which will screen them from neighbours. A
1.5m tall hawthorn hedge will screen the panels from the
countryside to the south-west.
Previously, Mr Rhodes won an appeal against NE Derbyshire
District Council’s decision to ban use of a system for bringing
irrigation water to the grounds by storing and using highway
water run-off, a process which continues.
Mr Rhodes said: “This is an entirely new application. Our desire
is to contribute positively to the environment in the form of a
renewable heating and power supply.
“The ground source heat pipework allows the field to be
restored to agricultural use and the solar panel and battery
system is all totally contained along one edge of the field
behind an existing high hedge, such that not visible.”
However, one neighbour said the change of use and
associated development would have an adverse effect upon the
character of the area and represent a prominent intrusion into
the countryside.
Another objector said: “The barn, concrete hardstanding and
solar panels are all out of character to the Old Rectory and its
surrounding area and are more akin to that of a commercial
venture.”
The application will be decided by NE Derbyshire District
Council.
Concerns over
school parking
P
ARKING outside schools in Wingerworth is often a
cause for complaint. Here John Winter looks at
Hunloke Park School’s issues.
One resident who lives near the school has complained that not
only does she have trouble getting her car out at dropping off
time, but to make matters worse it stops her taking her child to
school.
She added: “There are lots of people who live in Wingerworth
village and near to Hunloke Park School, but the school is oversubscribed
to children who do not live in the village and this is
why the roads around the schools at pick-up are busy. The
majority of the pupils who attend do not live in the village.
“I live at the side of Hunloke Park School but there wasn’t a
place for my daughter, like so many of the other children who
live close by. I have to drive my daughter to her school and I
don’t block driveways or be discourteous to residents.
“Until schools go back to catchment areas, this problem is
going to get worse. It has created a nightmare as small villages
and schools cannot cope with the influx of vehicles from out of
the area at school drop-off and pick-up times.
“Perhaps it’s about time the police organised a meeting with
people residing close to schools experiencing parking issues and
the local authority highways and education department to
address some of the issues and put safety measures into place
to prevent a serious incident occurring.”
The mother added that the authorities should look at a school
bus park-and-ride scheme, where parents drop their children at a
designated place to embark on the school bus.
‘Kiss and Drop’
Jenny Murphy, headteacher at Hunloke Park, said: “We offer a
'Kiss and Drop' service nowadays so not many parents park on
the streets or the church car park in the mornings. We also now
have a staggered end to the day to help with some of the
parking issues. We constantly remind parents about parking and
they can, and do, still access the church car park at the start and
end of day wherever possible.”
Coun Anne Knyhynyckyj, chair of Wingerworth Parish Council,
and a reader at All Saints’ Church, Wingerworth, said: “On the
subject of parking in the church car park, it is paramount to the
church that the children at Hunloke are kept safe when going
and coming home from school.
The church has advised, parents through the headteacher, that
parents can park whilst dropping off their children for school and
for picking them up when school is finished.
She added: “What has also been asked of the parents is that
they do not park their cars in the car park at any other times,
unless notified in the first instance. The Church Centre is a very
busy place and is run as a business so those who use the
premises should have priority to the parking facility.
“Parking in our village has become quite a problem. On the
road where I live, cars are parked on the pavements where
people walking or have children in prams or pushchairs just
cannot get past. It is extremely dangerous and I intend to bring
this up again at the next council meeting.”
• Derbyshire County Council’s policy towards school placements
has not changed since they issued the following statement in
2020: “Schools take pupils from areas outside their normal area
so in the future, the children from the normal area will have
priority, if the schools are oversubscribed. The council is aware
of the extent of housing growth around Wingerworth and
continues to monitor the numbers in the schools to ensure that
there are sufficient places for children in the area.”
The flight of the bumblebee
Buff-tailed bumblebee
Carder bumblebee
Bumblebee
30
Prof Ian Rotherham explains why our hot
weather and late flowers have boosted the
number of bumblebees in the wildlife garden
F
OR the later part of the summer and into early autumn,
my garden has simply been ‘buzzing’ and much of this is
because of good numbers of bumblebees.
There are plenty of honeybees too and also some interesting hoverflies
including the hornet mimic volucella zonaria. With a body-length of
nearly two centimetres, this impressively large insect does indeed look
rather hornet-like, but feeding on pollen and nectar it is totally harmless.
The larvae live inside wasps’ nests presumably scavenging or being
fed as young wasps. This is very much a southern species that was
formerly considered very rare but which is now spreading northwards.
So to find it in my garden is exciting, but not entirely unexpected. It is
certainly one to look out for and a species that is easily spotted if it is
around. They are very active with direct flight but love to bask in
sunlight.
Together with some of our butterfly species which do well in hot, sunny
weather, many bumble bees are thriving.
With flowers such as red valerian and marjoram having largely finished
in the wildlife garden, others like honeysuckle, the various delightfullyfragrant
mints, and especially English lavender, have come to the fore.
Lavender is especially favoured by a mix of bumblebee species, for
example the large buff-tailed bumblebee, white-tailed bumblebee, and
garden bumblebee all with lots of yellow, black and white and big,
rounded, hairy bodies.
Jet-black with orange-red tails are red-tailed bumblebees (though there
have been fewer in recent weeks) and rather smaller are tree
bumblebees, and brown and orange carder bees.
Pretend
There are also hoverflies that look like bees, and ‘cuckoo bees’ which
look like other bumble species but essentially parasitise their nests.
They pretend to be another species so they can lay their eggs in the
nests and their young are then raised by the host colony. Quite often the
emerging cuckoo larvae will kill off their host rivals.
On one particularly large lavender bush in my garden, I counted 30-
plus bumblebees at once but just one individual honeybee. The latter
tend to be on marjoram and then more recently on mint and abundant
echinops flowers.
The remarkable bumblebee flight relies on a ready supply of highgrade
energy fuel in the form of nectar collected from flowers whilst
foraging. Indeed, a typical flight to collect nectar and pollen uses about
10% of that collected to power it.
Most pollen gathered is stored to feed the bee larvae with a fully-laden
bumblebee taking about 25% of its bodyweight in pollen and nectar
back to the nest. In extreme cases, this loading can be up to 75% of
bodyweight.
Bumblebees forage on a range of flower species and types but they
may have to learn how to extract nectar most effectively from sometimes
complex flower structures.
This has evolutionary purpose for these flowers because having
learned how to harvest from them, the bees tend to select the same
species time and again.
For the flowers, pollen taken and deposited on different species is
wasted, but if the bees learn to specialise, this behaviour benefits them
and the flowers too.
Worker bees are ‘central place foragers’, heading out from nests to
surrounding countryside; some species flying locally but others travelling
from five to 20km.
The young achievers
T
HEY endured lockdowns and remote learning, but
both A Level and GCSE students at Tupton Hall
School put all that behind them to record a fabulous
collection of examination results.
This year has seen the highest number of successful
Oxbridge applications in the school's history, with James
Wilbourne (natural sciences) and Andrew Carter (medicine)
moving on to study at Cambridge and Libby Morrell (English
language and literature) now at Oxford. Overall, the cohort
achieved a brilliant pass rate of 99.5%. The percentage of
A* to A students was 24.1%, with 55.9% being A* to B.
Head of Sixth Form, Charlotte Burton, said: “These students
have endured a global pandemic; were unable to sit their
external GCSE exams and experienced prolonged periods of
virtual and remote learning. They demonstrated resilience,
compassion, maturity and levels of independence that will enable
them to flourish as they progress onto their next steps.
“More than 100 students have progressed onto university while
others have taken opportunities with apprenticeships and the
armed forces.
“Lucy Johnson, Chloe Wakeling and Lyssa Comins have all
secured places at nationally recognised performing arts
institutions.”
Many Tupton Hall students are now heading to universities
across the country to study subjects as wide ranging as
sports, psychology, veterinary science, child nursing, law,
English language and medicine. Others are beginning their
careers by with apprenticeships in fields such as the NHS,
36
electrical engineering and the vehicle industry.
Andrew Knowles, headteacher of Tupton Hall School, said: “We
are delighted for our students. Their diligence and hard work in
the Sixth Form has been duly rewarded, particularly considering
the difficulties that the pandemic presented for them and the
school. We are all very proud of this wonderful group of
individuals who now go on to the next exciting phase of their
lives, equipped with the qualifications and confidence to achieve
further success. I would like to thank our highly skilled staff and
supportive parents and families who have provided great
teaching, pastoral care and encouragement for our students
throughout this time.”
Meanwhile, Tupton Hall School’s class of 2022 eagerly awaited
their GCSE results at Tupton Hall School. Overall, 60.8% of the
year achieved five or more GCSEs graded 9 to 4, including
English and maths, while 39.6% achieved five or more GCSEs
graded 9 to 5.
Commented the headteacher: “This group of students were
incredible as they coped with learning remotely at home,
frequent pandemic-related absences and the pressures of a full
formal extended examination period over two months. They
worked in partnership with our committed and dedicated staff to
achieve excellent results.
“We are delighted that so many of them have the qualifications
to now progress to the next stage of their lives. Whilst I am very
pleased with overall results I would also like to celebrate with our
students and families the wider sense of community spirit,
support, compassion and belief that has shone through over the
last two years. Thank you and well done to all.”
