Roman 2 and 4 Advice from the pros! Check out one of the exciting new<br />
events of the 20<strong>12</strong> convention: Three “Masterclass Circles”<br />
(for low flutes, C flute, and piccolos) feature some of the<br />
world’s greatest teachers and allow attendees to drop in for<br />
individual advice and mini-coachings. Everyone is encouraged<br />
to bring piccolos and questions, visit up to five stations, and<br />
receive feedback from these fabulous experts in a casual environment.<br />
The pros include Cynthia Ellis, Nicole Esposito, Carl Hall,<br />
Sarah Jackson, and Horacio Massone.<br />
9-9:50 am Two Worlds: Ethnic <strong>Flute</strong> Solos for Western <strong>Flute</strong><br />
Octavius 8 and the World <strong>Flute</strong>s that Inspired Them<br />
A recital of western flute solos that have been written either in<br />
the style of world music or to emulate a world flute. Each solo<br />
will be preceded by a short description and solo on the world<br />
flute that inspired it. Program on page 190.<br />
9:30–10:30 am The Art of the Traverso<br />
Florentine 1–2 This concert opens with Traverso Colore performing original<br />
and transcribed works for large Baroque flute ensemble by<br />
members of the greatest generation of Baroque composers:<br />
Boismortier, Handel, and Vivaldi. Featuring Eva Amsler,<br />
Jessica Dunnavant, Carlos Feller, Ellen C. Johnson, Karen<br />
McLaughlin Large, and Sarah Jane Young. The showcase of<br />
Baroque flute playing concludes with Magda Schwerzmann<br />
performing works by Nardini, Telemann, and Boismortier.<br />

<strong>August</strong>us 5–6 International flutists Gergely Ittzés and Jasmine Choi present<br />
a varied program that stretches from Bach to Paganini to<br />
Clarke to Ittzés! Program on page 194.<br />
9:30-10:20 am Phrasing 1.0: Architecture, Artistry, and the Breath<br />
Octavius 16 George Pope discusses using Moyse’s 24 Petites Etudes<br />
Mélodiques as the starting point for understanding the structure<br />
of music and developing skills for controlling the elements<br />
of performance that allow each of us to bring our<br />
music to life. Presentation will include ideas about phrasing<br />
and how to use the breath. Volunteers from the audience will<br />
play, so bring your flute!<br />
