SATUR-DAY OF CARING
Food insecurity was the main issue we all faced when COVID-19 hit in 2020.
Our Satur-Day of Caring started with an idea that took less than a week to plan and
execute. Over the next 365 days it drastically grew as more and more seniors,
shut-ins, and families were identified by our non-profit and school partners. From 100
households that first week, to 400 a year later, Satur-Day of Caring became a vital part
of our COVID-19 Recovery.
As we served more people, more volunteers showed up every third Saturday to help.
High school athletes, honor students, bankers, union members, entire families, flag
football teams, nurses, doctors, coaches, college athletes, college students,
the list goes on. People from all walks of life, of all ages worked side-by-side to
unload and pack the food bags.
100 drivers and their helpers spreading out over 50 routes did more than just drop off
food. They formed special bonds - delivering special treats, birthday wishes, holiday
presents and, more importantly, a smile and conversation.
Our donors not only stepped up financially, but they also got creative - they purchased
a prize steer from the Canfield Fair and donated that beef, they sent first aid kits,
socks, and homemade cards to those in need.
Annually, we are helping more than 8,000 people through this initiative.
SATUR-DAY OF CARING CHRISTMAS FOOD GIVEAWAY
The United Way of Youngstown and the
Mahoning Valley wanted to make sure all
children, families and seniors were taken
care of for the Holiday Season. Through our
partnership with Southwoods Health and
Chris and Ed Muransky, we hosted the second
annual Satur-Day of Caring Christmas Food
Giveaway. We distributed 600 hams and
holiday food boxes filled with fresh foods
and non-perishable items through a drive-thru
food giveaway.
In addition to the drive-thru food giveaway, we
also packed and delivered food and
essentials to our 400 Satur-Day of Caring
families and shut-ins across the Mahoning
Valley. Through our Satur-Day of Caring
Christmas Food Giveaway, we served over
6,000 people food and essentials for the
holidays.
