FROM THE
Editor
It’s Matchday 14 of the league campaign and nearing mid-October, if you
can believe it, and on Wednesday night it’s the challenge of Preston North
End in BS3.
Hats off to our opponents, with
Preston boasting the sturdiest
defence across the EFL. They have
conceded just six goals so far, a
third of those against Norwich City
in a 3-2 win on Saturday.
However, as we’ll see across the
opposition pages in this midweek
programme, scoring goals hasn’t
been their strong suit to date.
Here’s hoping things continue in
that fashion on Wednesday.
As for City, we had been enjoying
finding the back of the net,
matching the results to go with
those goals. Unfortunately our
winning run at home came to an
end against QPR, and Coventry City
held us to a goalless draw a week
ago, so a bounce back win would
be most welcome.
Wins against Preston have
historically been hard to come by.
Some who believe in superstition
would consider them a ‘bogey team’
but I was thankful to be reporting
on our three points in the 2-0 win
back in January 2021. Famara
In fact, it had been 11 years to the
them!
In the latest issue of the Robins
Good evening to you all for this rearranged fixture
against Preston North End.
We extend a warm welcome to Ryan Lowe, his staff,
players and the travelling fans and hope you all enjoy
the game.
We go into this match after the weekend’s
disappointment at Birmingham City, so it’s about
a big response on our own turf.
We’ve got to prove to ourselves and our fans that
there is a lot more fight in us than we showed at the
weekend.
A good run has been followed up by a run which is
proving a bit difficult to break out of at the moment.
We need to find a performance and result which is
more in keeping with what we’ve been about in the
early part of the season. That’s the challenge for all
of us.
Selection has been a big conversation but we can’t
make wholesale changes – we are not in a position to
do that – and I also think we have players who are, as
a rule, been very reliable too.
What we have to do as a group of staff is to try to give
the players both the opportunity but give them also
confidence to go out there and perform.
That’s certainly my job and I’m very hopeful that we
can turn it around on Wednesday because ultimately
we have a decent group of people and talent within
the squad.
This match against Preston is a new opportunity for
us, Saturday is behind us and I expect a big response
to help generate a special energy at Ashton Gate.
Enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige.
President Marina Dolman helped present the Harry Bamford Trophy to the family
of the late Peter Hayes during half-time of our fixture against Coventry City.
Peter, who passed away earlier this year, upheld the values of professionalism,
sportsmanship and good conduct across the city of Bristol. He was a Bristol City
apprentice and played for Bath City, Robinsons, and Highridge United as well as
being player manager at long-established local club St Aldhelm’s, where he led
them to league and cup triumph.
The trophy was presented to his wife Mary and close family.
INTERVIEW
Zak Vyner
A proud Zak Vyner celebrated his milestone 100th appearance for the
club in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town.
The Academy graduate joined the
100 club six years after making
his debut against MK Dons -
coincidentally also a 2-0 win.
Since then, he has been on loan
at Plymouth Argyle, Accrington
Stanley and Rotherham United
before returning to City, where it
had always been Vyner’s ambition
to make it as a Robin.
definitely proud of. I got there and
topped it off with a win and a clean
sheet which was lovely as well, with
my parents there to watch me, so
that was the icing on the cake.
“I play alongside a lot of Academy
lads as well so I think it’s a great
advert of what we’re about here and
I was over the moon to make 100
appearances for this club.”
The versatile right-sided defender
explained that having come through
the Academy from the age of nine,
to reach triple figures at Ashton
Gate was “even sweeter.”
One of his fellow Academy
graduates is top scorer Tommy
Conway. “He’s been on flames this
season,” added Vyner. “We see
it every day and it’s a great thing
that he’s doing it in the games.
ANYONE WHO MAKES 100
APPEARANCES FOR THEIR CLUB IS
GOING TO FEEL SENTIMENTAL BUT
FOR ME, HAVING BEEN HERE SINCE I
WAS A KID, AND TO END UP HITTING
THAT NUMBER IS AMAZING.
He said; “I’ve done all the loans and
my aim while I was doing those
was to come back and be a Bristol
City player. I’ve been able to do that,
and establish myself here. Anyone
who makes 100 appearances
for their club is going to feel
sentimental but for me, having been
here since I was a kid, and to end
up hitting that number is amazing.
“It’s a big achievement, one I’m
I’m delighted to see him get the
chances and back that up with
goals and assists, honestly I’m over
the moon for TC!”
Vyner’s now closing in on hitting
the 200 career marker. He has
appeared in every Championship
game so far, providing assists in
our first two games of the season
and he played a key role in our
earlier unbeaten run.
Vyner laughs at.
said. “I like to think it was a great
Preston North End head to BS3 having conceded just six goals in the
league, unbeaten away from home.
Last month’s 1-0 loss to
Birmingham City proved to be
a first defeat of the season
(following August’s Carabao Cup
exit to Wolves) was made worse
when frustrated boss Ryan Lowe
was sent off. He had made his
frustrations known citing he was
“disappointed in some of the
[referee] decisions.”
North End had become only the
third English side in history to
start the league season with
seven consecutive clean sheets
but they’ve lost twice since defeat
to the Blues, after a 2-0 defeat to
Sheffield United a fortnight later.
But the goals - despite Saturday’s
result at Carrow Road - have
been hard to come by in the
league. Preston have scored 12 in
total, with four of those put past
Huddersfield Town in the Carabao
Cup. After their 2-1 second round
defeat to Wolves, it means North
End have only managed seven
Championship goals from 13
games with their record, despite
having a resilient defence,
standing at W4, D7, L2.
However Manager Lowe is keeping
belief in his forwards.
Speaking to BBC Sport last month
he said: “We know we need to find
that little bit of quality to score,
I believe the lads we have at the
club have got the quality to score
goals. We are creating chances.
I will speak to the strikers and try
and instil some belief into them
that they will score goals and I’m
sure they will.”
Emil Riis certainly has taken his
manager’s words on board, with
his brace helping secure a 3-2 win
over Norwich City at the weekend.
THE BOSS
Ryan Lowe
BORN | SEPTEMBER 18TH 1978
APPOINTED | DECEMBER 7TH 2021
A well-travelled striker in his playing days, Lowe scored 212
goals while representing 14 clubs between 1999-2018. That
period of service included two spells at Chester, three at
Crewe and a further two at Bury, where he retired.
He twice gained promotion from League Two with Bury, where
was a caretaker manager/player during his final season.
He led the team to promotion from League Two in 2018/19,
before taking on the matter role at Plymouth Argyle.
He also led the Pilgrims to League One at the first time of
asking but resigned last December to take on the challenge
at Preston.
Deepdale featured a plastic pitch between 1986-
1994, however it was not a surface which proved
all too popular. When it was ripped up, it was the
last remaining plastic pitch in the English league.
Emil Riis Jakobsen pounced in stoppage
time to deny us all three points at
Deepdale.
Chris Martin had put us ahead after 13
minutes, before Jakobsen scored his first
of the day just before the hour mark.
We had been dominant in this game
but saw plenty of chances go begging
however a rare win over Preston looked set
when Antoine Semenyo restored our lead
inside the final ten minutes.
However, Jakobsen had the final say,
finding the back of the net again with his
95th-minute volleyed finish.
You shall not pass…Liam Lindsay has played every
minute of Championship football this season, forming
part of the defence which had conceded zero goals
from seven games before last month’s defeat to
Birmingham City.
Lindsay also boasts an impressive tackle ratio, having
won 19 of his 25 attempts, to become a key figure in
the North End defence having been used fleetingly last
season.
The Scotland defender began his career at Partick
Thistle with loans at Alloa and Airdrieonians. He moved
south of the border to Barnsley in 2017, where he
earned promotion from League One, followed by a twoyear
spell at Stoke City.
He joined Preston on loan in the latter stages of the
2020/21 season, making 13 appearances and scoring
twice before making the move permanent that summer.
The 26-year-old centre-back has since made 29
appearances for the Lilywhites in all competitions.
The left-sided midfielder from
Manchester United’s Academy
has been another regular feature
in North End’s sure-but-steady
Republic of Ireland international
was also the star performer against
both Luton Town and Rotherham
last month, assisting the only goal
as the Hatters were defeated 1-0.
Our Young Robins secured their seventh
and eighth wins of the season to round
off September top of the Professional
Development League South table.
Goalkeeper Stefan Bajic earned more
minutes between the sticks and enabled
his team to grab a fifth clean sheet in a
1-0 away win at Reading.
It was Sam Bell who scored the game’s
only goal with a left-foot shot after a cross
from Joe Porton.
Bell then picked up where he left off, with
his brace enough to secure a 2-1 home
win over Swansea City.
The forward scored a screamer in the
third minute and then added a second
just after the hour-mark, before Tarrelle
Whittaker grabbed a goal back with 15
minutes left to play.
It came after Swansea had picked up the
pace but only saw efforts from range from
Nathaniel Ogbeta and Filip Lissah before
Whittaker halved the deficit.
The Young Robins rallied and almost
restored their two-goal cushion with Bell,
on the search for a hat-trick, hitting the
post.
Chatting in the Kofi Lounge at Ashton Gate before the noon kick-off against
Cardiff City, the conversation inevitably got round to other early starts.
A game against Preston North End came up with an 11.30am kick-off.
Apparently it was a very quiet atmosphere at the start.
Subsequent research confirmed the game was on New Year’s Day 1990. This
finale to the festive season followed two away trips - Fulham on Boxing Day,
a handy 1-0 win and the long trek to Huddersfield only to lose 2-1 two days
previously. The supporters had Christmas and the New Year celebrations
behind them. All possible explanations for the atmosphere despite the Robins
occupying third spot going into the game.
The Robins found it hard to get going but received a late Christmas gift on 36
minutes. Andy Llewellyn’s cross glanced off the head of defender Gary Swann
and over keeper Alan Kelly to put the Robins ahead. Minutes later Kelly made
a great save from Dave Smith while David Rennie and Mark Gavin had shots
blocked to keep the score down to 1-0 at the break.
The Lilywhites produced little in reply until after the break. Steve Harris’ shot
hit the side netting. Kelly again made a string of great saves. Gavin’s corners
led to several scrambles in the area and Kelly saved from Rennie and Rob
Newman before making his one fatal mistake. He could not hold the ball from
Gavin’s corner on 71 minutes and it fell kindly for Newman to fire into the roof
of the net from six yards.
The Robins were still struggling and Brian Mooney gave the Lilywhites hope
when he scored the best goal of the game from 25 yards with five minutes of
regular time left but it was a classic case of too little, too late.
HALL OF FAME
Gary Collier
Well it certainly seemed an
age since we had been Ashton
Gate before we faced QPR. It
was great to get back at home
and now to play this rearranged
fixture against Preston North
End.
September was a big month for
the Former Players Association as
we have celebrated our
first year in existence. In that time
we have secured our own lounge in
the form of the “Legends Lounge”
above the Sports Bar where we
have been able to accommodate
our 17 ambassadors who come
from different eras in the club’s
history.
You will no doubt see our
ambassadors around the ground
today in their club blazers and ties,
so don’t forget to have a photo
taken with them or stop for a chat.
In our 12 months we have also
been able to host different events
such as the “Ashton Gate Eight”
Anniversary and the “Spirit of
the Sixties” which were very well
received by you the
fans.
Our prime aim though is to
reconnect former players with the
club and it’s been a
privilege to have been able to bring
back more than 60 former players
to Ashton Gate as
well as reaching out to more than
100 across the UK and abroad;
players like
Kevin Mabbutt, Gary Collier and
Dariusz “Jacki” Dziekanowski.
As well as the Ambassadors, we
also have some invited former
players with us today so make
sure you keep a look out for some
great players of the past.
Cheers for your support and best
of luck to the team.
Thanks.
PAUL GAINEY REMEMBERS THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE GREAT GARY COLLIER
Gary Collier, alongside Geoff Merrick, was a
mainstay of the Bristol City defence during the
club’s rise to the top flight of English football.
Bristol-born, he clocked up nearly 250 appearances
for the club he supported as a boy, before leaving for
Coventry in 1979, for a record sum of £325,000.
It was argued that Gary’s departure, when he became
the first player to move under the new freedom of
contract rule, was the catalyst for the financial woes
of 1982. Collier’s move prompted manager Alan Dicks
to sign several of the squad on lengthy, expensive
contracts ranging from seven to 11 years.
Gary was an enterprising man, both on and off the
field. As a cultured centre-half, the elegant Bristolian
made his debut as an 18-year-old against Luton in
March 1973, deputising for the injured Geoff Merrick,
and it was clear that a player of such skill, pace and
intelligence would win a regular place in the side.
His move to Highfield Road was destined to be
short; after two games and a difference of opinion
with manager Gordon Milne. Gary was pondering a
return to Ashton Gate when in stepped American club
Portland Timbers with an offer he could not refuse.
Coventry banked £365,000, then the biggest fee for
any English player to cross the Atlantic, and Gary was
America bound. After Timbers collapsed, he joined
San Diego Sockers, Kansas City Comets and Chicago
Sting right up until 1990, and then settled in Florida,
coaching teams like Fort Lauderdale.
He starred alongside Geoff Merrick in the 1973/74 FA
Cup run, voted ‘Player of the Year’ in 1974/75, and was
a key figure in the 1975/76 promotion success. Ever
present in the 1976 season, he netted three goals in
193 League games before joining Coventry.
Fluent in movement, brimming with confidence
and ambition and a superb athlete, he had a grace
and mobility that made him a superb addition to
the City team jigsaw. But he struggled with some
of the aerial battles, and the rough and tumble part
of the game. In the spring of 1978, David Rodgers
was recalled to replace Gary, who spent most of the
following season in the reserves.
AWAY
Days
With two wins in my 18 visits
to Deepdale you would think
that this wouldn’t be one of my
favourite away trips, but it’s far
from it! I really love my trips to
PR1.
Deepdale is a fantastic stadium
nicely enclosed and very
atmospheric and I always find the
locals friendly and up for a football
chat with visiting fans.
My first three visits were played on
the plastic pitch. We drew one and
lost two but the most memorable
and probably disappointing visit
was the finale to the 1997/98
season. It was our promotion
season under John Ward and I
was convinced that for the first
time since 1955 we were going to
get promoted as champions.
with Jerry Tocknell
Massengo’s best in a red shirt so
far!
The biggest following the boys
have had in my time visiting
Preston came in our 2014/15
promotion season when ‘Captain
Marvel’ Aaron Wilbraham sent the
2,400 Red Army behind the goal on
the Bill Shankley Kop into raptures
with an 81st minute equaliser. He
headed past Jordan Pickford to
secure a massive point and three
days later promotion was achieved
in that legendary 6-0 victory at
Bradford.
Thankfully Preston joined us in
the championship for the 2015/16
campaign when they won the
play-off final beating Swindon
(didn’t they celebrate promotion
in October that season) 4-0…I’m
yet to find a fellow Red that didn’t
want the Lilywhites to win that
game!
We went to Deepdale top of the
table for our last fixture and
as long as we won or matched
Watford in their final game against
Kevin Keegan’s Fulham at Craven
Cottage, the title was ours. A
couple of thousand City fans in
attendance witnessed a 2-1 defeat
despite Sean McCarthy scoring his
only goal in a red shirt during his
loan spell, and this coupled with a
2-1 Watford victory in London, saw
the title heading to Hertfordshire.
Our only victory since that painful
May afternoon at Deepdale came
in February 2011 when two David
Clarkson goals with Brett Pitman
adding to an Andy Keogh opener
gave us a convincing 4-0 win. This
was revenge for our controversial
opening day draw the season
before when a very young referee
Michael Oliver handed the hosts
a 96th minute penalty, which
Callum Davidson tucked away as
a two-goal lead disappeared in
the last 10 minutes. It wasn’t our
day as the M6 traffic had meant
that some of our fans had missed
the kick off. We seem to have
a bad habit of conceding late in
this part of Lancashire as last
season a 95th minute equaliser
denied us 3 points although it
was a magnificent strike from
Jakobsen for that goal in a game
which I consider the be Han-Noah
The winger who grew up in Lambeth, London, arrived
at Ashton Gate in the summer of 2010 from Barnet,
signing a three-year deal and the winger hit the ground
running in his first season as a Robin.
His first competitive City goal came in an enthralling
3-3 draw against Barnsley in BS3, which was the first
of five goals in all competitions during his maiden
season.
He amassed 48 appearances in all competitions
during his first season, in which he was named
2010/11 Player of the Year. Adomah would depart
Ashton Gate with a total of 136 City appearances and
17 goals to his name.
He has also represented Middlesborough, Aston Villa,
Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City and now Queens Park
Rangers, as well as representing Ghana’s Black Stars
on 19 occasions.
Shaun Goater moved to BS3 from Rotherham United
for £175,000 in the summer of 1996, scoring on his
debut v Gillingham. With 24 goals in all competitions
in the 1996-97 season, he finished the campaign as
City’s top scorer and was named in the PFA Team of
the Year for the division.
He continued to be clinical in front of goal the
following season as City battled for promotion, even
scoring a brace against Bristol Rovers in a 2-1 win at
the Memorial Stadium in November 1997, and his final
home outing for City came in a 2-0 win over Rovers in
March 1998.
Goater, formerly of Manchester United, secured a
£400,000 move to Manchester City in March 1998,
leaving the Robins having scored 45 times in 81
appearances and having secured his placed as a fan
favourite with the Ashton Gate crowd.
Korey Smith arrived in BS3 having helped Norwich City
reach the Premier League and captained Oldham. In
his first season with City, he played a crucial role in our
double-winning campaign.
His performances on the pitch also saw him named in
the League One Team of the Season by his peers.
Smith went on to make 196 appearances donning the
captain’s armband and becoming a fan favourite in the
process.
He cemented his place in City folklore on December
20th, 2017, the night ‘the roof came off Ashton Gate’
as Smith struck in added-time to secure a famous
victory over Manchester United in the quarter-final of
the Carabao Cup.
Having arrived in August 1996, he scored on his debut
in a 5-0 win over Luton Town, before going on to
become a regular fixture in the City side throughout his
first year as a Robin.
Goodridge’s second season in BS3 saw him play an
integral role in the City side that gained promotion
to Division One as he amassed 31 appearances and
bagged six goals, with memorable strikes coming
against Preston North End and Burnley at Ashton
Gate.
A short loan-spell at Cheltenham Town spell would see
out the remainder of the 2000/01 campaign, before
returning to BS3 for 2001/02 with his time at Ashton
Gate ultimately coming to an end in November.
Throughout his career, Goodridge would represent
Barbados on the international stage on 63 occasions,
scoring 16 goals.
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
Free gifts just from purchasing petrol would never be the same again. In temporary
or permanent mounts, these coins set the trend for the future of collecting motoring
souvenirs.
You just don’t know what you’re gettin’.
“Oh no, not another Peter Osgood!”
A Smiley Glass or World Cup heroes…
really, is there a choice?
To become an iconic piece of
football memorabilia it has to be
original. So, in preparation for
the Mexico World Cup finals in
1970, petroleum giant Esso came
up with this little classic, all for
filling up with four gallons of
go-go juice.
Ah, the joys of motoring and
collecting football stuff took a
major turn in the early months of
1970 when the slogan, “The Esso
sign means happy motoring…call
at the Esso sign,” was the place to
fill up your gas-guzzler and start
collecting some serious soccer
stuff.
Stuff the Smiley Tumbler, these
tiny silver-like coins featuring 30
England international footballers
were soon to become the new
currency for the school playground
with that familiar phrase of “got,
got, not got.” Why collect bits of
paper with pictures on when there
is something all nice and shiny?
This was certainly a collection that
gripped the nation as the nickelalloy
discs featuring the 1966
World Cup heroes of Bobby Moore,
Inside the flimsy, temporary coin holder are the mint-fresh coins that were never
to be re-issued.
Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Gordon
Banks, Bobby and Jackie Charlton
plus 24 others were being snapped
up. But why 30 coins if only 22
travelled to Mexico to defend their
World Champions’ crown?
The perils of production deadlines
and Sir Alf Ramsey naming his
final squad would have been too
close to release this iconic set into
the public domain. Therefore there
was a bit of guess work on behalf
of the petroleum marketing boys.
So here are the names captured
on the discs, but not in the mind
of Sir Alf: Colin Harvey (Everton),
Mick Jones (Leeds United), Paul
Madeley (Leeds United), Ian
Storey-Moore (Nottingham Forest),
Henry Newton (Nottingham
Forest), Alan Oakes (Manchester
City), Paul Reaney (Leeds United),
Peter Simpson (Arsenal) and Peter
Thompson (Liverpool).
To add a few facts for these
unfortunate players, Newton,
Oakes and Simpson failed to win
any full caps for England, while
Madeley won all 24 caps post
Mexico (1971-77). On the other
side of the coin, goalkeeper Alex
Stepney (Manchester United) and
Nobby Stiles (Manchester United)
both made the South American
trip but not to be a petrolhead
collectable.
For us at Ashton Gate, there are
two coins to source: Terry Cooper
and Norman Hunter, both with
Leeds United at the time, are
captured forever within the set.
Of course, there are occasional
errors to look out for such as one
coin here. It’s that of Bobby Moore,
who was made an OBE after
lifting the World Cup. However,
on his coin he is credited as CBE
instead. Hastily, a correct version
was minted, but it makes little
difference to the overall value,
which can often been found for
under £30 on the internet.
There are two different ways to
hold your completed coins in
place. A temporary paper folder
was the easiest and cheapest
way, but for 2/6d (12 ½ p) a
more impressive blue cardboard
presentation piece was available.
Once the coins were pushed into
place, there was no need to get
them back out as the reverse side
just had the Esso logo.
When I come across some stuff in
the box marked “Italia 90” I’ll show
you a more up-to-date version
on this theme, with one player
appearing in both sets 20 years
apart. But now. shall I get out my
old World Cup boots, magazine
and football from Argentina 1978?
I’ll flip you Bobby Charlton, heads
or tails for it?
Norman Hunter and Terry Cooper: 1970
coins and Ashton Gate Legends.
