FROM THE
Editor
After the disappointing trip to St Andrew’s, a big response was needed
for the midweek visit of Preston North End. Thankfully, the three points
arrived in the form of two big Rob Atkinson headers.
Those full-time scenes were
welcome at Ashton Gate, not least
because a fair few of those in the
stands would not have seen City
beat a Preston side, with the last,
a 2-0 win in January 2021, played
behind closed doors.
The result also ended our run of
five games without a win to set up
Saturday’s match against Millwall.
Ahead of it, I caught up with Timm
Klose to preview this encounter
against a Millwall side still looking
for a first win on their travels this
season.
Speaking of defenders, Louis Carey
was back in BS3 on Wednesday
night to provide analysis on Robins
TV, so it’s fitting programme guest
writer Paul Gainey takes a close
look at our former captain’s career
in our last Hall of Fame feature on
page 39.
Elsewhere, we continue to celebrate
Black History Month with more
profiles of past and present City
stars, plus, with the World Cup
getting ever closer, Steve Smith
winds back the clock to the tune of
Japan and South Korea in 2002.
And if quizzes are your thing, the
Robins Lotto event is set to return
at the end of this month, so find out
more about how you can take part
over on page 41.
But there’s football to be played
before then, and here’s hoping
for similar scenes to those of
Wednesday night come 4.45pm on
Saturday.
Enjoy!
>2 THE ROBINS MILLWALL
THE ROBINS MILLWALL >3
Welcome to this Saturday’s fixture
against Millwall.
We hope you will get to celebrate a positive result,
much like we did on Wednesday night against a
Preston side who were hard to break down and had
only lost and conceded once away from home in the
Championship up to that point.
Whether you were at the ground, followed on social
media, Robins TV or local radio, thank you for
supporting the team. We played well overall and
it was the response we needed after the result at
Birmingham.
We showed what we’re capable of doing but we
need to be consistent. We do not want to be in the
position of needing to show a response and, if we
are going to make strides this season, then the
performances need to be right up there, first and
foremost, week in, week out.
It was a good result on the night and now we need
to find a way of doing the same again against
Millwall and for the rest of the season.
This is a squad game and we made four changes
on Wednesday night. It was about those lads taking
their chance and as I’ve said before, everyone has
to be ready.
NIGEL
Pearson
Millwall is the next challenge and we look forward
to welcoming Gary Rowett and his staff, players and
supporters here. Even though they have not won
away from home, Millwall have picked up points in
their last two games and their experience makes
them as much of a threat as anyone in this division,
so we have to be ready from the off.
We started against Preston with a really positive
intent – we need to repeat that intensity on
Saturday.
Enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige.
INTERVIEW
Timm Klose
Timm Klose helped his side to three points on what was his first league
start of the campaign on Wednesday night against Preston North End.
The defender has been patient for
playtime this season due to injury
and other personal circumstances
but he returned to the starting
XI which put an end to the club’s
unwanted run of disappointing
results.
Klose, who saw his defensive
partner Rob Atkinson head in the
vital goals in BS3, was pleased
with the club’s outcome, especially
after the manner of the 3-0 loss at
Birmingham City a week ago.
“I didn’t play at Birmingham City but
from the outside looking in, we just
conceded from three set pieces and
that’s hard to accept.
“Wherever you lose, if it’s a score like
3-0 you want to respond in the next
game and we did that this week.
“It shows we have character and I
think against Preston at 1-1 maybe
we would have gone on to lose
the game in the past. This time we
scored the winner and that’s positive.
I THINK WE SHOWED A POSITIVE
SPIRIT AND THAT’S WHY WE WERE
ABLE TO GET THE WIN [V PRESTON] IN
THE END.
Speaking the day after the Preston
result, Klose said: “We showed we
were able to respond after that
Birmingham game. We started
well, we played well as a team. Yes
we had to stick together, defend
together but we did that well. The
goal we conceded was a bit unlucky
but big Rob helped us out.
“I think we showed a positive spirit
and that’s why we were able to get
the win in the end.
“We were five games without a win
so to win it late against Preston,
gives us confidence going into this
next game against Millwall.”
Klose has played the Lions three
times in his career, winning each
encounter while with Norwich City.
“I didn’t know that until now,” he
admitted. “I’m not superstitious but
it’s always nice to hear a positive
statistic, I like that one.”
Here’s hoping Klose’s personal
form against the Lions rings true
on Saturday, three years after he
last faced them as a Canaries
player.
“It will be another difficult game
again,” said the centre-back,
looking forward to the next test.
“They are always a tough nut to
crack and I expect the same again.
“They are always tough to play
against, we will have to work
hard. It definitely won’t be easy,
we will need to give 100% and I’m
looking forward to these types
of challenges. If we can take
something from it then that can
help us, so I’m looking forward to
the game very much.”
Klose, now 34, was also asked
about his reasoning for extending
his stay in BS3. The experienced
defender penned a new one-year
contract in the summer, with the
option of a further 12 months,
following his short-term deal in the
second half of last season.
Klose explained: “I enjoyed my
time here last season, my family
were happy here and that’s the
big thing. The rest, well the talks
with Nigel Pearson were always
positive and I got a warm feeling
from the club.
“Everything was positive, I was on
board with what they wanted from
me and in the end it was the right
decision to stay.
“Whether I play one year or do two
we shall see, but my job right now
is to give my all, we are planning
big things and we shall see.”
Speaking of big things, Klose’s
home nation Switzerland take
to the world stage next month
for the Fifa World Cup. The
Swiss - due to be armed with the
likes of Yann Sommer (Borussia
Monchengladbach), Manuel Akanji
(Manchester City) and Granit
Xhaka (Arsenal) - face Cameroon,
Serbia and the world’s best ranked
country Brazil in the group stage.
Klose does, however, expect
big things from Serbia striker
Aleksander Mitrovic, who has
10 Premier League goals in the
current campaign.
Klose celebrates with his teammates after Rob Atkinson’s first goal against Preston
in midweek.
Looking ahead to the tournament,
Klose said: “We played Brazil before
and we did quite well against them.
It’s definitely the hardest team in
the group, but if Mitrovic plays as
well as he does for Fulham, he will
make it an interesting game against
their defenders.
“Not that you can predict anything
but our quality is very good, there
are great players to select from.
It shows there are big things to
come from Switzerland, we’re on
the world map of football and
that’s a big thing for us.”
Without getting too far ahead of
ourselves, City have eight games
to play before then and it all starts
with Millwall at Ashton Gate on
THE BOSS
Gary Rowett
BORN | MARCH 6TH 1974
APPOINTED | OCTOBER 2019
Gary Rowett will be hoping to keep his team within arm’s
reach of the play-off candidates after narrowly missing out
last season. The 48-year-old has yet to experience Premier
League management, he did play in the top flight as a defender
in a career which spanned between 1991-2007. He amassed
444 appearances but In 2012 he took up his first managerial
position at Burton Albion and later returned to previous clubs
Birmingham City and Derby County.
CLUB FACTS
Millwall finished the last campaign six points off the play-offs on 69 points
as they concluded a fifth successive campaign in the Championship.
He left the Rams to join Stoke City in May 2018 but his appointment
there lasted less than a year, and he made the switch to
Millwall after 29 games in charge. Coincidentally, his first game
as boss was against the Potters, which Millwall won 2-0.
Yet they carry an unwanted
streak with them into the 2022/23
campaign, having not won away
from home since a 1-0 win at
Reading in March.
They failed to win in their final six
away games of the season and
remain winless on the road this
time around, as they prepare to
travel to Ashton Gate on matchday
15 (D2, L4 away from home in
22/23), not including a 1-0 defeat
away at Cambridge United in the
Carabao Cup back in August.
There are certainly no complaints
on their own turf though. Inform
attacking midfielder Zian
Flemming struck twice in the
2-0 win over Middlesbrough last
weekend, to record a fifth win from
seven games at the Den.
Now with a win and draw behind
them, Millwall’s eyes will be set on
putting an end to their barren run
on the road.
Dutchman Flemming was joined
by Benik Afobe, whose time at
Bristol City was ruined by an ACL
injury in 2019/20, as summer
signings at The Den. Afobe spent
last season on loan in South
London but made a move from
Stoke City permanent in June.
As for Flemming, his manager
Gary Rowett expects big things
from the club’s record signing who
replaced Jed Wallace.
Speaking after his side’s win
against Boro, Rowett told BBC
Sport: “I tried to sign him previously
without any success but thankfully
we got him this time around. Zian’s
done it regularly in the Eerste
Divisie and my expectation is for
him to at least get into double
figures this season.”
City started the new year with a bang
thanks to Andi Weimann’s hat-trick.
He lifted the ball over Bartosz Białkowski to
take his tally to double figures before Tom
Bradshaw’s header found the equaliser.
Afobe scored a penalty after he was fouled
by Ryley Towler but City fought back
through Weimann’s second City hat-trick.
He burst past his marker to turn Han-Noah
Massengo’s whipped cross into the top
corner to make it 2-2, before he smashed
one home from close range late on.
The Dutchman heads to BS3 in fine form with three
goals in his last four games. Two of those came a
week ago as his brace helped brush managerless
Middlesbrough aside 2-0 at the Den.
Flemming could yet write more of his own headlines,
and has been backed by his manager to hit double
figures this season.
The 24-year-old arrived in West London in the summer
on a three-year deal from Eredivisie outfit Fortuna
Sittard for a reported £1.7 million. He made his debut
on the opening day of the season and scored his first
goal in a 2-1 win against Blackpool.
The attacking midfielder began his career in Ajax’s
Academy, winning the Eerste Divisie with Jong Ajax
before moving to Dutch side PEC Zwolle, whom he left
in August 2020.
He is described as an attack-minded midfielder, who is
deadly from direct free kicks and a handful in the air.
TOP-OF-THE-TABLE
CLASH
While the first team face Millwall in the Championship on Saturday afternoon, City’s young guns stretched
their unbeaten run to nine games with a draw against the Lions’ Under-21s at the Den.
BRISTOL CITY
PROGRAMME
The Robins played the second half
with 10 men against the fellow
table-topping Millwall when Tommy
Backwell was dismissed for a
second yellow card. But they came
through after Ben Acey’s goal just
before the break had levelled the
scores following Mason Bennett’s
opener.
After a 4-0 home win against
Swansea City the trip to the Den was
going to be a tougher encounter
against a team who are pushing
the Robins hard at the top of the
Professional Development League 2.
Joe Low again captained the team
while Stefan Bajic got his fourth
outing in red and white.
The game started cagily, with Zac
Bell shooting over the bar on his
return from Wales Under-19 duty.
Millwall broke the deadlock in the
25th minute when Bennett slid the
ball past Bajic. City fought back
when they capitalised on Millwall
losing the ball and Acey finished off.
The Robins lost a man when
Backwell was shown a second
yellow card just before the break.
But with Bajic in fine form to
deny Nino Adom-Malaki and Tom
Leahy, City held out.
City were sunk by three set-piece goals on a disappointing afternoon at
A first-half double from Auston Trusty - his first inside just three minutes
Birmingham City. Changes at the break seemed to make an impact but
SEMENYO
0-3
Diédhiou , Wells, Semenyo
DATE: JANUARY 23RD 2021
COMPETITION: EMIRATES FA CUP ROUND 4
PLAYED: THE DEN
CITY LINE-UP: O’LEARY; MARIAPPA, KALAS, MOORE, ROWE;
SEMENYO (ADELAKUN 76), VYNER (EDWARDS 80), BAKINSON,
PALMER (HAN-NOAH MASSENGO 75); DIÉDHIOU (MARTIN 76) ,
WELLS (S BELL 87)
Manager Dean Holden made customary changes for this cup game and
20 months on some look familiar today. They included keeper Max
O’Leary and upfront Antoine Semenyo and Nahki Wells.
It was during the Covid-19 pandemic and the team’s changing area was simply
chairs spaced out in a gym. Former Robins keeper Frank Fielding and striker
Matt Smith turned out for the home side.
The Lions had the larger share of the action early on and O’Leary had to make a
smart save from Mason Bennett. Kasey Palmer looked to influence the game by
swapping wings in search of openings. Just after the half-hour mark the Robins
lost possession leading to a shot from 25 yards, which was saved by O’Leary.
The game turned on the half-hour when a Robins counter-attack led to Zak
Vyner slipping the ball through for Famara Diédhiou, who was up-ended by
Fielding. The referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Diédhiou got up
to convert from the spot. The Robins then played with more freedom though the
Lions had their moments. Notably, Tom Bradshaw’s header from a corner had to
be headed off the line by Tommy Rowe. Bennett’s shot then brought out another
fine save from O’Leary.
City made an encouraging start to the second half with shots from Palmer and
Semenyo, who was having a brilliant game. The Lions responded with Alex
Pearce forcing a finger-tip save from O’Leary, however, fortune then played its
part when Wells’ free kick hit the wall and deflected into the net with Fielding
wrong-footed.
The champagne moment then arrived on 72 minutes as Wells found Semenyo.
He set off on a direct line for goal through two defenders, leaving them trailing
and placed the ball across Fielding into the far corner. Breaking away, his
exuberance boiled over with the perfect back flip.
HALL OF FAME
Louis Carey
PAUL GAINEY LOOKS BACK ON THE CAREER OF CITY GREAT LOUIS CAREY
Defender Louis Carey is Bristol City’s very own ‘Roy of
the Rovers’. He watched the club from the terraces as
a schoolboy and signed his first professional contract
in 1995.
Nineteen seasons in the making, Louis Carey went on
to make 645 City appearances, a league record which is
unlikely ever to be broken.
This versatile, quality defender left and joined Peter Reid
at Coventry after the League One play-off final defeat to
Brighton in 2004. The outcry from City fans was testament
to a popular character and it was no surprise that
he returned six months later where he thrived anew, and
grew into an inspirational captain.
Bristol-born Louis started his career at right back but it
was in the centre of defence that he began to earn plaudits.
Carey’s compelling combination of pace, spring and
anticipation made up for a lack of height and his tackling
was clean and accurate.
A mainstay in the side since breaking into the first-team
under Joe Jordan in 1995, Carey won promotion from the
third tier under John Ward in 1997/98. His eye-catching
play during the 1998 promotion campaign earned him a
call up for the Scottish under-21 squad.
After Danny Wilson arrived at Ashton Gate, Louis barely
missed a game, making the right-back position his own.
In 2003/04, no club outside the top flight boasted a
tighter defence and Carey’s organisational skills were a
major part of that.
He also achieved LDV Vans Trophy success with the club
in 2003, beating Carlisle United 2-0. It helped wipe away
the memory of a Wembley defeat to Stoke City in the
same competition three years earlier. He won his second
promotion with the club in 2006/07 as City finished
runners-up to Scunthorpe United in League One.
A year later he was part of Gary Johnson’s side that reached
the Championship play-off final at Wembley - just a game
from the Premier League - but City lost 1-0 to Hull City. In
August 2012 Carey was granted a testimonial against Bristol
Rovers, a game City won 3-0 at Ashton Gate.
He left the club at the end of the 2013/14 season but
he remains a legend at Bristol City, where he scored 15
goals and was widely admired by all City fans. Following
City’s 4-1 win against Stevenage in December 2013, he
was gifted a shirt bearing the words ‘646 record breaker’.
He was believed to have broken John Atyeo’s appearance
record by one, however it is now debated that Carey’s
tally stands even at 645 alongside the former club striker.
Wells left his home country of Bermuda and after a
period at the Richmond International Academic and
Soccer Academy in Leeds, he signed professional
terms at Carlisle United. He made his League One
debut against Bristol Rovers in January 2011 as the
Blues romped to a 4-0 victory in Cumbria.
Wells proved his keen eye for goal, particularly at
Bradford and Huddersfield Town before a £5million
switch to Burnley.
Chances were limited but he soon found his form on
loan at QPR. Wells was their top scorer despite making
the switch to Ashton Gate for an undisclosed fee from
parent club Burnley in January 2020.
Wells made his debut for the Robins the following day,
stepping off the bench in a 1-0 win over the side he
had departed less than 24 hours earlier.
Lita was a product of the Chelsea youth system but
left the West London side at the age of 16 before
heading to the West Country in search of first-team
football.
He made his debut in a 2-0 win over Blackpool in
August 2003 but it took until the 2004/05 season
before Lita hit his goalscoring-stride in BS3.
Starting the season with three goals in the first three
outings of the season, Lita would go on to score 29
goals in 51 appearances in all competitions, including
a memorable hat-trick away to Torquay United in a 5-0
win.
Reading swooped for the young striker in July 2005 for
a then club-record £1million fee. He went on to enjoy
Premier League football as his career developed.
‘Box to box midfielder’, an ‘enforcer’, ‘tough-tackling’
– the plaudits appear endless when Elliott’s name is
mentioned to fans.
Elliott made his Lions debut in April 2003 and was even
used as an emergency right-back in the 2004 FA Cup
final against Manchester United.
Elliott signed for City in July 2007 and had a successful
first season in which he was named in the Professional
Football Players’ Association Team of the Year alongside
team-mate Bradley Orr, while he was also the club’s
Young Player of the Year.
Between 2011 and 2013 he made nine appearances
for Jamaica – a spell interrupted by a snapped Achilles
during a training session in February 2012, which ruled
him out of the rest of the campaign. He departed BS3
in 2014.
The full-back’s youth career was littered with silverware,
winning the UEFA Youth League twice and lifting the FA
Youth Cup on three occasions. Dasilva captained England
Under-21s to Toulon Tournament victory and lifted the
Euro championship with the Under-19s.
After two successful loan spells at Charlton Athletic,
Dasilva arrived in BS3 on loan from Chelsea for the
2018/19 campaign. A year later, he would sign a
permanent contract.
Dasilva’s first professional goal came in November
2020 as he netted the equaliser in a 2-1 away victory at
Huddersfield Town, before finding the top corner in the
dying minutes of last season’s trip to Stoke City.
The 24-year-old has played in every league game of the
2022/23 campaign so far.
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
Three CDs, over 3 hours of classical music, booklet to help you understand each piece
and a mini book on the competition’s history – what isn’t there to like about all of this.
The author of this 84-page booklet has
been covering the World Cup since his
first publication in 1958 and has been
updated every four years without fail.
On the reverse of the box set is a full list
of composers and their masterpieces.
A World Cup tournament would
not be complete without the
obligatory playlist of new
releases that could be sung
from the terraces. However, the
arrival of the studious Swedishborn
Sven-Goran Eriksson as
England manager brought about
a shift in musical listening.
Whether it was his calm persona
that portrayed the former Lazio
manager as one of the game’s
intellects, coupled to the fact he
was the first foreign manager to
take charge of the national team,
his instant success elevated
him to unmeasured heights with
qualification to the big soccer
show in South Korea/Japan in
2002; the
5-1 demolition of Germany on
their own turf was the major
highlight and turning point for
qualification.
The world of football was no
stranger to classical music. For
Italia 90 for instance, the BBC
chose Nessun Dorma by the
renowned Italian opera singer
Luciano Pavarotti, and this was
The white CD of On the Ball by Ant and Dec contains three different versions, while the
red cover release features the video of the dynamic duo and their parody of Sven and
his assistant, Tord Grip.
an instant hit as it made No.2
in the British Singles Chart. To
emphasise this popularity, his
album The Essential Pavarotti,
went to the top of the LP charts
and later in the season I’ll return
to vinyl recordings.
There were two more journeys
of note into this genre for the
national broadcaster, starting with
Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 and
Ode to Joy that was used at both
Euro 92 and 96, and two years
later with Pavane by Faure that
introduced the BBC’s coverage of
France 98.
So we come to this triple-CD box
set; The Sven-Goran Eriksson
Classical Collection. A total of
31 classical music composers
that, we are led to believe, have
been specially chosen by the
super Swede himself when he
wasn’t “Enjoying the company
of his family and friends, taking
exercise, keeping fit and healthy,
relaxing and having a good meal
in a restaurant.” I guess that just
leaves listening to music.
“This collection contains some
of my absolute favourites, but
also music that is fairly new to
me. Music which I have sampled
to broaden my perspectives and
discover something new.”
This type music is not to
everyone’s taste I know, but there
are several inclusions within
these 3 hours that are familiar.
For example, at the annual
Remembrance Sunday service,
the haunting strains of Elgar’s
Nimrod can be heard. And for
anyone who’s caught The Last
Night of the Proms, there is Pomp
and Circumstance by the same
composer to give a more uplifting
mood.
To accompany these discs, there
is an 84-page booklet entitled The
History of the World Cup by Brian
Glanville to get you in the mood.
Pity it could not include David
Beckham’s dramatic last minute
free-kick against Greece at Old
Trafford that sent England off to
the finals played in two countries
for the first time.
If this collection didn’t get you
geared up for the mammoth
month-long tournament in 2002,
eventually won by Brazil, there
is always the official World Cup
song We’re On The Ball, from the
same 2002 football festival by Ant
and Dec to get you moving.
World Cup and classical music are reunited for France 98 with Pavane, by Faure.
Max O’Leary denied Shaun Williams from the penalty
spot when City met Millwall on April 30th 2019. We
were 1-0 down but this save proved a turning point
at the Den, with Jamie Paterson scoring an exquisite
free kick, before Famara Diédhiou confirmed the
three points late on.
