BREAKTHROUGH’S DUAL MISSION
LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Breakthrough Manchester Community,
The Derryfield School, Breakthrough’s host for the past 31 years, is focusing on
its core value of Community this year. Breakthrough, with 89 students and 23
Teaching Fellows had the strongest sense of community this summer since our
last fully in-person summer in 2019! It was invigorating to have everyone back
on campus attending Breakthrough each and every day!

Breakthrough Manchester provides six years of intensive,
tuition-free programming, to support Manchester students from
traditionally underserved communities on their path to college.
We are building the next generation of teachers through
competitive recruitment, coaching from master educators, and
research-based training to teach through a lens of social justice.

From physics and geometry to reading and writing, students honed their
academic skills in preparation for the school year ahead. They tried
new extracurricular courses like Quidditch, knitting, lacrosse, French, and
performance dance! Community building was the cornerstone of college
and career fairs and field trips to Star Island, Rattlesnake Mountain, Dartmouth
College, and Boston universities and cultural sites. All the while, students
enjoyed Community Blocks, Advisory Activities, and sharing their talents at
All School Meetings!
Our entire students-teaching-students community truly Reached for the Stars
this summer and that theme carried through to the final Celebration when we
filled the auditorium with family and friends to honor Breakthrough’s stellar
summer of 2022!
As we strive to keep our students
on their paths to college during
these Covid recovery times,
Breakthrough has become more
important than ever to provide
academic, emotional, and
social support. We are grateful
for the generosity of so many

individuals in our community to
