BREAKTHROUGH’S DUAL MISSION
LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Breakthrough Manchester Community,
The Derryfield School, Breakthrough’s host for the past 31 years, is focusing on
its core value of Community this year. Breakthrough, with 89 students and 23
Teaching Fellows had the strongest sense of community this summer since our
last fully in-person summer in 2019! It was invigorating to have everyone back
on campus attending Breakthrough each and every day!
From physics and geometry to reading and writing, students honed their
academic skills in preparation for the school year ahead. They tried
new extracurricular courses like Quidditch, knitting, lacrosse, French, and
performance dance! Community building was the cornerstone of college
and career fairs and field trips to Star Island, Rattlesnake Mountain, Dartmouth
College, and Boston universities and cultural sites. All the while, students
enjoyed Community Blocks, Advisory Activities, and sharing their talents at
All School Meetings!
Our entire students-teaching-students community truly Reached for the Stars
this summer and that theme carried through to the final Celebration when we
filled the auditorium with family and friends to honor Breakthrough’s stellar
summer of 2022!
As we strive to keep our students
on their paths to college during
these Covid recovery times,
Breakthrough has become more
important than ever to provide
academic, emotional, and
social support. We are grateful
for the generosity of so many
foundations, corporations, and
individuals in our community to
make Breakthrough happen!
REACH FOR THE STARS
SUMMER 2022 SNAPSHOTS
With a theme of Astronomy, Breakthrough Students and Teaching Fellows
set out this summer to “Reach for the Stars!” The Derryfield Middle School
was transformed into outer space complete with a solar system, aliens, and
spaceships. Our students and Teaching Fellows were so happy to be fully
back on campus together for the first time in three summers!
BTM Extracurriculars – Broom or Stick – You Choose!
9th Grade Covid Roller Coaster
Our beloved 9th graders’ Breakthrough
summers (thanks to Covid) were just like the
roller coasters they loved building in Physics
to master Newton’s Laws of Motion. This was
their final and best Breakthrough summer with
all the perks: a grade level retreat to Star
Island, vistis to college campuses, and a trip to
Boston with highlights including Swan Boats,
college tours, and a ride on the T!
As summed up best by our students:
You’ve made such a positive impact on me. — Shantya
Thank you for sticking with me through everything. Your energy
and caring nature have helped me and others a lot. — Starah
Thank you for being my biggest supporter and never giving up on me.
You help make learning fun and math actually make sense! — Maddie
This was the best year of Breakthrough I’ve ever had! — Shreela
Visit from Mayor
Joyce Craig!
We were delighted to have Manchester
Mayor Joyce Craig visit Breakthrough and
speak with our students about the importance
of education. She was impressed that students
were spending their summer learning and
happy to see their engagement and enthusiasm.
It is exciting for Breakthrough students
to bring their love of learning back to Manchester
schools each fall. The Mayor shared
a story about her best friend who she met in
the Manchester schools, “The bonds you are
making now will last a lifetime for you and
you’ll support each other and learn so much
from each other as you grow through Breakthrough
and beyond!”
Mayor Craig concluded by reminding
students of the importance of their voices,
empowering them to volunteer and be
civically involved because they know what’s
best for the Manchester community. “We
need young people who are involved and
care! You are our future.”
With the inconsistencies of Covid-impacted
education, Breakthrough has been more
important than ever to make up for learning
loss and keep our students on the path to
college. After a morning packed with rigorous
academics to set our students up for the
academic year ahead with classes in math,
literature, science, and writing, they move
COLLEGE – the Goal!
College is woven throughout each Breakthrough
summer. Students and Teaching
Fellows compete on six college teams. Olympics
and Spirit Day are some of the favorite
community building events. The creativity,
collaboration, spirit, and fun were contagious.
Competitions ranged from artistic with cheer
and shield creation, to academic with mindbenders
and homework completion, to athletic
with dodge ball and tug-of war, to just plain
silly - like duct-taping your teacher to a wall!
Our college-aged Teaching Fellows share
their experiences through a college fair and
each student ultimately visited two or three
college campuses including Dartmouth where
one of our College-Bound students will begin
this fall. They had a personal tour of Boston
into extracurriculars. Teaching Fellows share
their passions and this year we had unique
offerings from Quidditch to lacrosse, and
Astronomy to Music Around the World, as
well as French, Knitting, Dance, History, and
of course - Summerbook so everybody has
a memento of their summer. Our students had
the opportunity to try lots of new things!
University from a veteran Teaching Fellow and
BU senior. All of these visits - whether in Boston
or New Hampshire - allow our students, often
underrepresented on college campuses, to
envision themselves in college and beyond!
CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BREAKTHROUGHS IN STORIES
Beginning with our founding as told by Marc Hurlbut, The Derryfield
Head of School, 1982-1994, we shared personal stories of Breakthrough
student, teacher, and staff alumni over the course of the year. These stories
brought to light how Breakthrough has grown and adapted to continuously
strengthen the path to college for students while also training future
teachers and leaders through our students-teaching-students dual mission.
Breakthrough
was meant to be!
“My college journey started when I was
support, encouragement, and opportunities
supplied by Breakthrough Manchester that
I wouldn’t be the nurse I am today!”
There’s a reason Susan Beaudry Blinn’s phone
still has a favorite photo of herself as the student
speaker at 1997’s Breakthrough Manchester
that she retrospectively realized she had been
chosen as the speaker because she was one
In 5th grade, Chau Ngo got her golden ticket
– a hall pass to go to the library to learn about
as a BTM Teaching Fellow
path to college, computer science engineering,
and ultimately co-founding her own company.
— Joel Vargas, Breakthrough San Francisco
of him attending Harvard one day! As a
Lajla and Dalila’s parents moved to the United
States from Bosnia in 2001 to give their
future family a better life. They had completed
trade school in Bosnia, but the US educational
system was not familiar to them. However, they
ingrained in their daughters that college is an
expectation and Breakthrough Manchester is
helping them meet this expectation.
Breakthrough Manchester was humbled
and honored to be chosen as the recipient
of memorial gifts for Nancy Tessier.
Breakthrough and the world of education
lost a shining star. Nancy was a true
advocate for equitable education. As
stated in her obituary, “Nancy was deeply
devoted to educating Manchester’s
children, but also to cultivating and
Joel with Lynn Sorensen,
Breakthrough’s first director
lot more to achieve his dream of going to
college. Breakthrough helped get him to
Boston University and on to Harvard
Graduate School of Education.
Lajla
With Lajla as a Teaching Intern and Dalila
as a 7th-grade student last school year, the
Husejnovic sisters enjoyed a unique
opportunity to be Breakthrough Teachers
and Learners together!
Remembering Nancy Tessier
A hero, a mentor, a critical friend
to and builder of Breakthrough!
“I’ve been waiting my whole life for a program like this!”
— Nancy on the Founding of Summerbridge
(Breakthrough Manchester) in 1991
Dalila
mentoring the next generation of teachers.
As a colleague, union negotiator, assistant
principal, and principal, and later as
assistant superintendent and a school
board member, Nancy’s advocacy for
both students and teachers influenced
the Manchester School District at every
level.” Her goals and Breakthrough’s dual
mission aligned perfectly!
With the launch of Breakthrough’s 31st summer, a new Breakthrough tradition was born. The first
day culminated in a “Clap in! Clap out!” ceremony highlighting the full cycle of Breakthrough’s
six-year program. We welcomed new 7th (and, this year, some new 8th) grade students with a
“Clap In” and celebrated our College-Bound graduates with a “Clap Out!” Each Breakthrough
graduate shared their major and which college they are attending then summed up Breakthrough
in one word including: support, community, family, growth, evolving, change, networking, and
Breakalicous! This new tradition highlights Breakthrough Manchester’s ultimate goal from day
one - college matriculation and beyond!!
OUR FIRST IN-PERSON EVENT IN THREE YEARS!
BREAKTHROUGH TRIFECTA!
CHAU - MATT - CAROLINE
When Chau Ngo shared her graduate
school plans in the spring, we all
wondered, what will Breakthrough do
without Chau? What will Chau do
without Breakthrough? A painfully shy
5th grader at the time she applied to
Breakthrough as a student, Chau is now
a compassionate, composed leader and
advocate for educational equity.
Although bittersweet, we are so excited
and proud Chau will be strengthening
her skillset with the pursuit of an MEd
in Education Policy and Analysis
at Harvard University’s Graduate
School of Education. With a full Urban
Fellow Scholarship and a passion for
educational equity, Chau will study
how organizations like Breakthrough,
Upward Bound, and City Year fit into the
big picture and contribute to the school
districts they’re serving with regard to
policy.
As Breakthrough Program Director, Chau embraced the importance of making connections
in the community and meeting students and families where they are. COVID offered the
opportunity to do this, quite literally, at their homes as school supplies were personally
delivered for summer 2020. Moving forward in education Chau will take this to heart and
make a point to survey the community and the people she serves to get to know them. Who
knows, she may come full circle back to Breakthrough once again!
Fortunately, Matt Long was able to jump in on the heels of Chau to join us as Interim
Program Director for Breakthrough’s 31st summer. As a former Teaching Fellow, Operations
Coordinator, and Director of Student and Teacher Success, Matt could quite literally hit the
ground running. Because, as those of you know who have experienced a Breakthrough
summer, it never slows down!
The timing worked perfectly. Matt had just completed a 1-year position as the Education
& Workforce Development Program Coordinator with ARMI (Advanced Regenerative
Manufacturing Institute) and would not be starting his new job with Spark Academy as
Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) Coordinator until the new school year.
We are delighted to welcome Caroline Wilson, BTM Teaching Fellow (2019 & 2020)
and Operations Coordinator (2021) back to the Breakthrough team as our new Program
Director. A University of New Hampshire, alumna from the class of 2021, Caroline joins us
after a year in Salt Lake City as the Volunteer and Event Coordinator at The Family Support
Center. Drawn to Utah by her love of skiing, Caroline missed her family and friends in New
Hampshire. Breakthrough offered the perfect opportunity for her to come home!
With three Breakthrough summers on her resume, she was a quick study and already has
some great ideas and events in the works for Breakthrough’s upcoming school year program.
Both Breakthrough faculty and students were so excited to hear she was coming back and
we can’t wait to see the creativity and fun she will bring to Breakthrough programming!
On the first day of school at
McLaughlin Middle School,
a teacher shared:
“Alex ran up to me and
said I changed his life.
Of course, I asked
how and he said
recommending
Breakthrough. I laughed,
as it was clearly not me,
but rather Breakthrough
that was the game
changer. All day long
I heard the cheers and
stories of how great it
was. One of my students
even said it made her
nicer!! I have never
heard such rave reviews.
They can’t wait to
return next summer!”
