INTERVIEW “The sister/brotherhood within Intercoiffure is unique” Daniel Kaner Intercoiffure Mondial & Oribe share a strong, valuable partnership. Why is it important for salon owners and stylists to exchange ideas with hairdressers from all over the world? DANIEL KANER: I have been working closely with ICD North America for many years. Oribe Canales was a great fan and received a lifetime achievement award from the organization given to him by Sarah Jessica Parker. The business leaders I’ve met and their insights have helped me to be a better leader. We have experienced great leadership such as Lois Christie, Frank Gambuzza, and today, our current president, Sheila Wilson. This past year I have had the privilege of building a relationship with the Mondial leaders and President, Peter F. Pfister. Peter and Sheila are working to build a strong global organization which is exciting for our community – it speaks to our future and all of its possibilities. I have admired the organization and its members from the earliest part of my career. The members were always the best examples of businesspeople and artists. And I was always impressed with how collegial an atmosphere and generous with knowledge transfer. They shared everything – from business idea to hiring practices – there is a great sister/brotherhood within the organization that is unique. Today as our community becomes global, it’s more important than ever to connect and work together to build the absolute best future for the next generation. Building globally is all about collecting local perspectives. What can we expect from Oribe next year? D.K.: We’re building our organization to have more of a presence in Europe and Asia. Currently, our brand is in 52 countries. We have built an Atelier in Copenhagen where our global artist Nicci Welsh will be the principal. We have nearly 100 US and international senior artists from Rome to Munich that will continue to share the Oribe story. We will continue to tell the Oribe Canales story and share his perspective. This year we introduced the “Muscleman” icon on a limited<strong>edition</strong> version of our award winning Dry Texturizing Spray. Your vision for the industry - how do you see the hairdressing business in 5 years? D.K.: Maybe the way to approach that question is for us to ask ourselves, “What do you think our customers will still value five years from now?” I believe that we can always do a little better. Diversity and inclusion as well as sustainability are on our minds, stretching as makers, businesspeople, and global citizens. Health, wellness, and active lifestyles are part of the beauty journey. Everyone is interested in beauty services. The youth is subscribing to it all – skin, nail art, extensions, color. The future of hairdressing will be monumental. The next question to ask is, “What is the best experience we can offer? What is our point of view as the curator of the experience? How far can we push the offering?” Once we answer that, as individual leaders we need to work backwards and create this new customer journey. Those who do that will have as much business as they can handle. Best is a mindset. Leadership is a mindset. Future is a mindset. Together we will continue to lead our industry and guide one another.
