A wooden ladder woven with festive foliage from the garden provides a seasonal
welcome for guests when displayed outdoors or inside the home

RUSTIC LADDER MADE with offcuts from
garden branches becomes an unusual decorative
Christmas feature when entwined with seasonal
leaves, cones and berries. Placed against a wall at the
front of the house to greet guests, it makes a striking alternative
to the traditional door wreath or can be festooned with fairy
lights to display inside the home.
Leaned against a garden tree, feed can be strung from the
rungs to encourage birds to visit, allowing the spectacle of their
coming and going to be enjoyed on a winter’s day.
Once the festivities are over, the ladder can be saved for the
following year or used as a plant support outside. Alternatively,
it can be dismantled, with the branches creating a log pile to
provide shelter for wildlife. ❯

• 2 large branches, 63in (160cm) long
• 7 branches for the rungs: 18in (46cm) long for the
lowest rung, with each one descending in size to the top
