Uni students designing 

fourth river footbridge 

CANTERBURY University 

students are working with 

city council staff to design a 

fourth pedestrian bridge for the 

Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. 

Seven civil engineering and 

fine arts students are working 

on concept drawings for the 

new Dallington bridge. This 

footbridge will be situated near 

Robson Ave and will provide 

the final, vital river crossing for 

the future City to Sea Pathway. 

City council head of parks, 

Andrew Rutledge says the third 

and fourth-year students have 

been provided with the dimensions, 

budget and the cultural 

narrative of the area, and are 

being encouraged to explore 

ways to incorporate sustainability 

into their design.

“The students are very motivated 

and are already looking 

at how they can use recycled 

materials in the design, as well 

as different ways to portray the

Third-year civil engineering 

student Giselle Dousti said 

being involved in a project that 

had real-world application was 

an opportunity she couldn’t 

pass up. 

“It’s really exciting to work 

on something in real life, and 

it’s been a great opportunity to 

work with the fine arts students 

on how we can bring their creative 

ideas to life,” she said. 

The students will check in 

with the city council’s red zone 

team as their designs progress.

New cricket kit for wicket-taker Lachlan 

A YOUNG Burnside cricketer 

received a grant and an extra 

surprise to continue playing the 

game he loves. 

Lachlan McCormick, 9, was 

among several lucky cricketers 

from around the country to 

receive registration fee subsidies 

and a gear grant, including bat, 

ball, gloves, pads and bag. 

The Burnside West University 

Cricket Club player has been 

saving his pocket money for a 

new bat but he was short of this 

goal. 

Lachlan said he was excited to 

take the gear straight to the back 

yard to play some cricket. He 

practises there almost everyday. 

His mother Nicola McCormick 

said the young all-rounder has 

not had anything new as he gets 

a lot of second-hand gear from 

his brother. 

Lachlan got into cricket because 

he liked watching matches 

with his father Dwayne and 

older brother Ronan. 

“My brother got into cricket 

first. Then, when I was seven 

I played on his team because 

Ronan broke his arm. It felt 

good to play on my big brother’s 

team, they had really good 

bowlers.” 

The Black Caps mega fan 

said his favourite player is Tom 

Latham because he played for the 

same cricket club. 

“I like watching them play and 

I like getting their signatures. I 

have this hat that has their signatures 

on it. So far I have 10 or 11 

signatures on it. It’s almost the 

whole team – I’m only missing 

Kane Williamson’s.” 

Lachlan is aiming to get a 

double hat-trick at the upcoming 

cricket season. 

“Last season I got a hat-trick. It 

was during the 10th over and on 

the last three balls I bowled them 

all out.”

‘Painting gives me happiness’

AN AWARD-winning Japanese 

artist is hoping to connect people 

through her third annual art 

exhibition. 

About 320 brightly coloured 

artworks are arranged in a cross 

at South Library, with its symbol 

representing the intersection of 

the past and the future. 

St Albans artist Haruko Furukawa 

said the majority of the 

artworks came from her students 

in New Zealand and from overseas 

artists – from Japan to the 

United States. 

“I painted about 50 artworks, 

220 were from my students and 

the rest is from many artists.” 

Since starting the project 

seven years ago, Furukawa said 

her only goal was to have many 

people participate and feel connected 

through the exhibition. 

The avid artist started to paint 

many years ago, as a way to deal 

with the raw emotion following 

her father’s death. 

“Then I discovered that painting 

gives me happiness,” she said. 

“I knew that I want to make 

people all over the world happy 

through my works.” 

Furukawa then attended Kyoto 

Saga Art University where she 

learned traditional Japanese art, 

and later picked up Western 

techniques in Florence, Italy. 

This explains the incorporation 

of acrylic and traditional 

Japanese materials into her 

painting. 

Said Furukawa: “My styles are 

a combination of Western and 

Japanese styles because I learned 

both. 

“Western colours are deep, 

whereas Japanese is more subtle. 

So I normally paint with Japanese 

colours first, and then paint 

with acrylic.” 

Furukawa has taken part in 

several live painting events and 

created murals across the city 

since moving to New Zealand 20 

years ago. 

Her artworks have also featured 

in local and international 

exhibitions. 

Last week, she was among 

five artists participating in an 

ongoing exhibition at Tūranga 

that displays the lives of ethnic 

minorities. 

Besides teaching art at her 

home, Furukawa also volunteers 

teaching art at retirement

Since coming into Government, we’ve 

worked hard to make sure that more 

New Zealanders have healthy, affordable 

places to call home. Now we’re taking 

the next step in our plan, announcing 

a massive infrastructure investment to 

kick-start new housing developments 

across the country. 

While housing supply is ramping up 

with a record number of new houses 

consented this year, we know that one 

of the main barriers to the construction 

of more homes is a lack of basic 

infrastructure. 

Our $3.8 billion Infrastructure 

Acceleration Fund – designed to speed 

up the pace and scale of house building – 

has taken a big step toward tackling this 

problem. This initiative is jumpstarting 

housing developments by funding the 

vital infrastructure needed for new 

homes – like roads, water pipes, and 

flood management systems. 

When taken together, the investments 

that we’ve made through the 

Infrastructure Acceleration Fund are 

expected to enable around 20,000 new 

homes right across the country, including 

around 1,300 in Rangiora – and there’s 

still more to come. This covers a range 

of homes, including public, affordable, 

market and papakāinga housing. 

The country’s housing crisis was decades 

in the making and we know the only 

way we’re going to solve it, and bring 

down costs for Canterbury families, is to 

build more houses. That’s why we’re also 

building more public and transitional 

housing than any Government since the 

1970s. 

There’s no single answer for fixing the 

housing crisis, but together, the measures 

we’ve put in place are making a real 

difference.

THE IDEA of project Place 

Cadets was simple – to show the 

values of including children in 

public space design. 

But that simple yet innovative 

idea was announced a joint 

winner for the category He Iti 

Pounamu at the Resene New 

Zealand Institute of Landscape 

Architects Awards last week. 

Judges said the project showed 

how children can participate in 

design as researchers and creators 

of their spaces. 

“[We] applauded the approach 

which saw tamariki (children) 

able to witness their ideas become 

a reality and gaining a real 

sense of belonging and inspiration 

in the process.” 

This category was judged using 

eight key criteria, including 

innovation in planning and 

solutions, added value for the 

community, effective sustainable 

management, influence and 

significance. 

The idea for the project came 

after a discussion between the 

Phillipstown Community Centre 

Charitable Trust and a design 

team from Gather Landscape 

Architecture about creating 

meaningful engagement with the 

community. 

Said trust manager Viviana 

Zanetti: “We needed to find 

a way that allow people to 

contribute in a meaningful way. 

So we wanted to try something 

new.” 

So a group of 21 children aged 

five to seven participated in a 

two-week programme in 2020 to 

design and build the playground 

Imaginarium. 

The name, decided together 

with the group, represents the 

idea that the playground can be 

“anything”. 

Lead landscape architect 

Wendy Hoddinott said the final 

outcome reflected what the 

children would like to play in, 

not the adults’ assumptions. 

The $5000 playground, located 

in the Phillipstown Community 

Hub, was assembled by the 

COLLABORATION: The Imaginarium was built for and by a group 

of children aged five to seven over two weeks, along with the 

help of parents, caregivers, and a design team. The group used 

full-size modules to assemble the playground on the last day of 

the programme. 

Children contribute to high profile award 

group, parents and caregivers on 

the last day of the programme. 

Funding was sought and 

granted by city council, Hamptons 

in Ferry Rd, the Lions Club 

Ferrymead and the Christchurch 

Rotary Club. 

The project, along with Te 

Raekura Redcliffs School and He 

Puna Taimoana Hot Pools, were 

three landscape architecture 

works in Christchurch that 

received a reward this year. 

The new primary school was 

a joint winner in Education 

and Play, while the city councilowned 

facility in New Brighton 

received the Award of Excellence 

in the category Park, Open 

Spaces and Recreation.

chicken curry is sure

Quick Thai chicken curry 

for one 

Serves 1 

Ingredients 

2 tsp tice bran oil 

1 chicken breast, skinless, sliced 

1 small onion, sliced 

2 tsp Thai green curry paste 

2 tbsp water 

165gm coconut milk, or coconut 

cream 

1 to serve lime, halved 

Directions 

Heat a frying pan, add oil and 

pan-fry skinless chicken breast, 

trimmed and sliced for 5min to 

brown on both sides. Remove to 

one side. Add sliced onion to the 

pan and stir-fry to lightly brown. 

Add curry paste and gently fry 

for 1min to release flavours. 

Add water and mix until 

smooth, then stir in the coconut 

milk or cream. 

Return chicken to the pan and 

simmer very gently (do not allow 

to boil) for 5min, stirring often. 

Stir in fresh coriander and 

serve with lime wedges on the 

side to squeeze over. 

The curry should not need 

any salt and pepper as the curry 

paste is full of strong flavours. 

Don’t allow the mixture to boil 

once the coconut milk has been 

added or the sauce may separate. 

Steak with whisky 

mushroom sauce 

Serves 1 

Ingredients 

1 beef steaks, thick eye fillet or 

scotch fillet 

½ tbsp olive oil 

2 Spring onions, finely chopped 

100g button mushrooms, finely 

sliced 

1 tbsp whisky, scotch 

1 Oxo cube dissolved in 

¼ cup water 

1 tbsp cream 

Sprinkle thyme 

Directions 

Bring the steak to room temperature 

well before cooking 

and sprinkle with a little salt and 

pepper. 

Heat a heavy frying pan, then 

add the oil. 

Once it starts smoking, add the 

steak and cook for 2-3 minutes on 

each side. Remove them to a plate 

and cover with foil. 

Reduce the heat and add the 

onion, stirring to lift any meat 

residue off the bottom of the pan. 

Toss them around for a minute 

or two, then add the mushrooms 

and thyme. 

Once the mushrooms soften, 

add the whisky. The alcohol may 

ignite and flare up, but it will 

quickly subside. 

Add the stock and allow 

the sauce to bubble and thicken. 

Finally, stir in the cream, then 

return the steaks to the pan and 

cook for another minute. 

Serve on heated plate, spooning 

sauce over each steak. Accompany 

with steamed baby carrots 

and snow peas and a few sprigs of 

chervil. 

Pea, ham and sour 

cream fettuccine 

Serves 1 

Ingredients 

120gm fettuccine, or 

spaghetti 

90gm Champagne ham, diced 

1 cup frozen peas, defrosted 

60gm sour cream, or creme 

fraiche 

½ lemon, juiced 

Directions 

Bring a large pot of salted water to 

the boil. Add pasta, stir and cook 

for 6-8min or until al dente. 

Stir pasta a few times while 

cooking to prevent it sticking 

together. 

Drain pasta, then add back 

to the pot along with the ham, 

peas, sour cream and lemon 

juice. 

Toss everything together and 

warm through on low heat. 

Season to taste with a little salt (if 

needed) and freshly ground black 

pepper. 

A few torn basil leaves on top 

will add extra flavour. Eat while 

hot. 

Pancakes 

Serves 1 

Ingredients 

½ cup trimmed mung bean 

sprouts 

1 medium carrot, julienned 

2 spring onions 

1 x 4cm chilli, seeds in 

½ cup water 

2 large eggs, lightly beaten 

¼ tsp sesame oil 

2 tbsp self-raising flour 

1 clove garlic, crushed 

1-2 tbsp rice bran oil 

Directions 

Wash bean sprouts under cold 

water and drain well. 

Julienne the carrot to make 

about ½ cup. Halve spring onions 

lengthwise, then cut into 5cm 

lengths. Cut chilli into 5mm 

rounds. 

Whisk water, eggs, sesame 

oil and flour together in a large 

bowl, until smooth. Add vegetables, 

chilli and garlic. Mix 

well. Heat half the rice bran oil in 

a non-stick frying pan. Add half 

the vege mixture and pat down 

evenly. 

Loosely cover and cook on 

medium heat for about 2min, 

until the underside is golden. Flip 

pancake. 

Continue cooking until veges 

are crisp-tender, about 3min.

stores, Alison says.

the local bed manufacturers, Rob and Alison are 

able to source some great factory specials for their 

customers, along with a wide selection of new and 

factory-redundant bed and mattress sets. 

“We also have a good 

selection of both

locally made 

bedroom furniture, 

entertainment units, coffee 

tables, dining tables and chairs, 

and anything else we can get 

our hands on,” Rob says. 

“By calling in on a regular basis 

you are sure to find yourself a 

bargain!” 

Parking is never an issue, with the 

option of parking at the front door on 

Stanmore Rd, or in the yard behind the shop, 

with the entrance off Draper Street, which is 

shared with Richmond Fruit & Vege. 

Richmond Discount Furniture offers local 

delivery for a minimal charge, but customers 

are more than welcome to pick up their 

purchases, which are easily collected using 

the yard at the back of the shop. 

Rob and Alison have enjoyed the friendships 

they have created with so many of their 

customers over the years. They would like
