FROM THE
Editor
Swansea’s visit across the River Severn coincides with the Halloween
weekend, so here’s hoping for a spooktacular occasion with this the first of
back-to-back games at home.
Right, Halloween pun out of the way,
now we get to enjoy football on our
own turf as we see out October and
head towards the back end of what
has been a relentless run of matches.
The World Cup starts in just a few
weeks and there is a fantastic
opportunity to make home
advantage count, with four of the
next five games in BS3 - that one
away game sees a trip north to
Middlesbrough.
Swansea, as we will explore across
the opposition pages, head to
Ashton Gate in fantastic form
after their stuttering start to the
campaign. They are now with seven
wins from their last nine games
which has seen them propel up the
league table into the play-off spots.
As for City, it’s a case of finding
a little bit more consistency. The
Reading encounter won’t live long in
the memory - a set-piece goal and
no shots registered to add to the
loss - while it will also be seen as a
missed opportunity after the 2-0 win
against West Brom just days earlier.
THE ROBINS SWANSEA >3

Good afternoon and welcome on our return to Ashton
Gate where we host Swansea City.
This is the first of back-to-back home games and a
great opportunity to get back to winning ways after last
weekend’s defeat at Reading.
We know the sort of levels we can achieve but we
have not been able to be consistent and that’s been
incredibly frustrating.
We will need to start fast and well against Russell
Martin’s side, who have enjoyed some good form of
late, and we have to impose ourselves early. Whichever
XI we start with, we need more energy and awareness
from the kick-off.
I have used words such as frustrating and careless to
describe last weekend’s defeat at Reading.
It was a wasted opportunity as we were unable to
reproduce what we did at West Bromwich Albion and
it’s that inconsistency which frustrates us all.
More than 2,100 of you travelled to Reading and we are
always grateful for your fantastic support. I am sure,
like us, you were left scratching our heads after the
game and none of us want to see a repeat today.
Today we celebrate inclusivity in sport with the
Rainbow Laces campaign. It’s a fantastic initiative
which supports the LGBTQ+ community who have an
equal right to be a part of sport. We know a lot more
needs to be done but highlighting this campaign is an
important step.
Finally, I am sure you will have seen that CEO Richard
Gould will be stepping down to take up a new role at
the England and Wales Cricket Board.
I have really enjoyed working alongside Richard and
we wish him well as he tackles one of the biggest jobs
in cricket.
Richard will be here until the end of January to navigate
our way through the next transfer window as continuity
and the club’s stability is paramount at this time, so it’s
business as usual as we focus on picking up positive
results and climbing the table.
Enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige.
NIGEL
Pearson
WE WILL NEED TO START FAST AND WELL AGAINST
RUSSELL MARTIN’S SIDE, WHO HAVE ENJOYED SOME
GOOD FORM OF LATE, AND WE HAVE TO IMPOSE
OURSELVES EARLY.
We celebrate inclusivity in sport by proudly
supporting the Rainbow Laces campaign on
Saturday.
The focus of this year’s campaign is ensuring a safe,
welcoming and inclusive environment for clubs across
the EFL and you will notice rainbow corner flags and
substitution boards to highlight that continued support
for LGBTQ+ fans, players and staff across the game.
To mark the occasion on Saturday, Robins TV will also
be speaking with Bristol City Panthers chairperson
Rob Parry-Hall on the live matchday show.
Bristol City Panthers are an LGBTQ+ friendly team.
Founded in 2000, the club believes in providing
everyone with a fun, supportive environment to play
football, learn new skills and make friends. They
welcome all players whatever their experience, ability,
sexuality, or gender identity.
In 2018 the Panthers became associated with the club
through the Robins Foundation’s ‘We Are City’ project,
which was one of the first in the country to occur.
After beating Blackpool 1-0 away,
they wouldn’t taste three points
They will be without top scorer
seeing Ryan Manning, who you can
ONES TO WATCH
3 RYAN
MANNING
Labelled “Mr Consistency” by his boss, Ryan Manning
has played a key part in Swansea’s initial bid for a
top-six push.
A child’s ticket for the Dolman Stand to gain access to this fixture
played on September 8th 1984. The match was drawn 2-2.
There is more of an element of guess work than usual as to
whether he will feature having been absent in the last few
games. It was hinted he could feature in last week’s derby
with Cardiff City. Russell Martin said he would be “back very
soon” so all eyes will be on that team sheet come 11am.
The left-back/midfielder had been in good form, providing
a goal or assist in wins against Hull City, West Bromwich
Albion and Watford. He’s certainly proved to be a key
player and will want to pick up where he let off.
Manning is a Republic of Ireland International who came
through QPR’s academy.
He spent part of the 2018/19 season on loan at
Rotherham United before leaving QPR for Swansea
in October 2020. He has made 75 appearances in all
competitions for The Jacks, scoring four goals.
Alex Scott is always looking to improve, and feels his exposure to firstteam
football is crucial to that.
The young midfielder, at only 19
years of age, has now rocked up
60 appearances for the club since
making his debut against Luton
Town in April 2021 and is still
maturing.
He became a regular in Nigel
Pearson’s side throughout
the 2021/22 season, and has
continued to be one of the first
names on the team sheet ever
since.
Scott said: “Being a starter is
definitely where I wanted to be
“For young players, it’s important
to experience this level of football
as early as possible.”
Scott mentioned the suspension,
which came as a result of five
yellow cards he received at the
start of October.
It’s both a sign of his ability to get
stuck into his midfield role, while
he understands the need to find
the right balance.
“It’s something you want to avoid
and there are times I could have
I’M ONLY LEARNING WITH EACH
GAME, TRYING TO KNOW WHEN IT’S
THE RIGHT TIME TO GO IN FOR THE
TACKLE AND BREAK UP THE PLAY
OR KNOW WHEN THERE’S ENOUGH
COVER IN BEHIND, SO IT’S ABOUT THE
BALANCE.
INTERVIEW
Alex Scott
after last season. I’ve said in other
interviews how I want to be the
first name on the teamsheet and
I’ve started every league game this
season, except for the one game
I was suspended, so it’s been a
positive.
“I feel I’ve done okay, definitely I
have things to improve on but that
comes through training and by just
keeping going. Playing first-team
football is so important.
avoided a yellow card but playing
in that midfield role sometimes
you have to stop a counter attack,
and players and the coaching staff
will appreciate a foul if you can
stop an attack on goal,” Scott said.
“I’ve been more careful in recent
weeks after getting five cards and a
suspension early on. Not that I will
shy away from tackles, if I started
ducking out of tackles then I
wouldn’t be playing the right game.
couldn’t have imagined that.
“It’s all happened so quickly, it’s
been two seasons since then and
I couldn’t have hoped for much
more, since taking my chance I’ve
not looked back. I’m still enjoying
my game and that’s the most
important thing.”
So what does Scott expect against
the Swans this time around, a
week after City’s frustrations at
Reading?
He said: “We’re disappointed
for the fans but we’re grateful
for their support and we want
to put it right for them against
Swansea.
“They’re a passing side with a
great manager who has a clear
style of play. We know they
beat Cardiff last weekend, they
showed their quality but in this
league every team is good. It’s
about adapting to each opponent
and I think we will be okay. We’ve
had a full week of training with no
midweek game, it’s been a while
since that last happened but as
players we just want to play.”
Away from club football, it’s
been a big year for the now
England Under-20 international.
The last time Scott spoke to
The Robins, he was part of the
Under-19 side which went on
So, will 2023 be even greater?
He explained: “Last year was a
I was regularly in the training
City were undone by a 76th minute mix-up that gifted Zian Flemming
the easiest of goals for Millwall to take all three points.
The Robins had barely stopped celebrating the Shaun Hutchinson own
goal that had cancelled out Tom Bradshaw’s opener when calamity hit.
A Millwall free-kick saw both defenders and Max O’Leary come for the ball
and when Tomas Kalas headed the ball away, Flemming had a simple tap
This was expected to be a difficult task against a Fulham side containing such notable players as Jimmy Hill and
Bedford Jezzard, as well as England regular Johnny Haynes, but City more than rose to the challenge as is shown
by this Bob Bennett cartoon which appeared in the Bristol Evening Post on the 16th January 1956.
Today sees an early kick off here at Ashton Gate and
we at the FPA would like to welcome Swansea City to
today’s game.
The match will also be the first time that we have
invited another Former Players Association to our
It’s great to have members of the Swansea City FPA
joining us for today’s game as their Association were
incredibly helpful to us during our initial set up and I
would like to thank Alan Curtis and Lee Trundle for their
developing with other Associations in the near future.
corner of the net to set City on their way to a deserved
success. Johnny Haynes screwed in a late goal for
Fulham, but by then John Atyeo had headed in a Jimmy
Rogers centre for a win that took City up to third place.
Alan, along with three other members, will be here
today mixing and sharing stories with our own
Ambassadors which will be great to see. It was also
great to see Tony Ford return to the club along with
Roger “Lou” Peters against Millwall.
Full-back Tony of course played between 1962 -1969
whilst Lou was here between 1960-68 as an outside left.
As both players had not been back to Ashton Gate in
a while, they were incredibly touched by the wonderful
response they got from supporters and wanted me
to pass on their thanks. It was also great to see our
ambassadors mixing with guests in the restaurant and
surrounding areas, especially when they were joined
by current player Kal Naismith who we “borrowed”
from Nigel Pearson.
Many thanks and enjoy the game today.
Neil Palmer
Please note an error in the previous Preston programme. The referees were transposed, whilst the reference to the Millwall goalkeeper should be that he had to retire
from the fray 33 minutes from time.
PAUL GAINEY
Centre-half Dennis Roberts’ bloodand-thunder
approach pleased the
Ashton Gate faithful, roaming feely
and dispensing the most ferocious
challenges, like some footloose
buccaneer. Brawny Roberts was
canny in his positioning and offered
strength and courage aplenty.
He was born in West Bretton,
Yorkshire. He signed as an amateur
for Huddersfield Town but never
appeared in the first team. At the
age of 17 in August 1937 Roberts
signed for Notts County where,
although he never played a first
team game, he received good advice
and coaching from “Dixie” Dean and
Hughie Gallacher.
Manager Bob Hewison signed
him for Bristol City in August 1938
on a free transfer and Dennis
made his debut at centre-half at
Clapton Orient in a 1–1 draw on 24
September 1938.
Dennis spent the remainder of his
career at Bristol City playing in the
Third Division South making 24
appearances in 1938–39 and three
appearances in 1939–40 before
the war.
He made a further 205 wartime
appearances before emerging,
after the war when league football
recommenced, as the regular centre
half and captain for several seasons.
Roberts was ever present in
1946–47 with 42 appearances
and played regularly in each of the
next four seasons. Ernie Peacock
who eventually succeeded Roberts
at centre-half started playing
alongside Roberts at right-half in
February 1950.
Masterful in the air, he was also
lightning fast for a six-foot player. He
once made his own team wince by
calmly pouring concentrated iodine
into a hideous six-foot gash on
his shin before tucking the broken
skin back and playing on as though
nothing had happened.
The indomitable stormtrooper
continued as a City regular until
a serious injury side-lined him for
several months and Jack White was
signed.
Bristol City had been languishing
too long in the lower reaches of the
Dennis
Roberts
Third Division South, manager Pat
Beasley signed White from Aldershot
in October 1952 immediately
appointing him as captain.
After retiring in May 1954 Dennis
Roberts was landlord of the “Avon
Packet” and then the “Ship Inn” near
St Mary Redcliffe Church. Roberts
later drove a fork lift truck at GKN
Bedminster until his retirement from
work in February 1983. He moved
back to Clayton West, Yorkshire,
following the death of his wife and
died in Huddersfield in 2001.
TRIUMPH AT THE
VETCH KEEPS CITY
IN POLE POSITION
0-5
Taylor 26, 27, 76, Newman 49, Honor 83
DATE: TUESDAY, MARCH 20TH 1990
COMPETITION: BARCLAYS LEAGUE DIVISION THREE
PLAYED: VETCH FIELD
ATTENDANCE: 7,051
CITY LINE-UP: SINCLAIR; LLEWELLYN, HUMPHRIES (HONOR
76), NEWMAN, BAILEY; GAVIN, SHELTON, RENNIE, SMITH;
TAYLOR (EATON 80), TURNER.
This exhilarating conquest at one of our bogey grounds sparked into
life with Bob Taylor’s two goals in as many minutes after the home side
had bossed the first half up to then.
Super Bob’s fierce shot rebounded off keeper Lee Bracey but he reacted
instinctively to head the ball home. Before the commotion had the time to
die down, he volleyed a bouncing ball from the edge of the area into the
net for one of the goals of the season. The travelling fans began singing,
“Champions!” as the Robins occupied pole position going into the run-in.
Two up, City relaxed into their methodical build-up play. At the break,
manager Joe Jordan felt the need to remind the players of the Swans’ early
dominance and warned of a second-half battle to come. However, four
minutes after the restart Rob Newman fired in from 25 yards following a
well-rehearsed free-kick routine. Dave Smith was enjoying his afternoon on
the wing and Taylor missed two opportunities for his hat-trick from Dave’s
crosses.
The big moment did finally arrive from a poor back-pass as Taylor showed
more determination to reach the ball first and toe-poked it past Bracey for
his 20th League goal and second hat-trick of the season.
Subs Chris Honor and Jason Eaton then combined for Honor to net his first
League goal.
Taylor would score his third hat-trick against Crewe in April but a hamstring
injury sidelined him for the remaining seven games of which City won
only two. City would win promotion but as runners-up to - Bristol Rovers!
Taylor’s consolation – his 27 goals earned him the League Division Three
Golden Boot award.
WHAT DID YOU COLLECT
FOR THE WORLD CUP
Grandad?
CITY FAN STEVE SMITH CONTINUES
HIS LOOK AT WORLD CUP MEMORABILIA...
This 1999 Corinthian tribute to the boys of 1966, including Jimmy Greaves, is one of a
signed limited edition by hat-trick hero, Sir Geoff Hurst.
In 2003 there was a return to England’s
finest 2 hours of football with figures
all wearing the traditional home colours
and cast in new poses. Even their faces
have been given an update.
Four Bobby Moore’s, there’s only four
Bobby Moore’s.
The best World Cup souvenirs often
get released just after the victory
parade in order to capture the mood
of the nation. After that come the
anniversary collectables; 10th, 25th
and so on. So it was by complete
surprise in 1999 that a set of tiny
plastic figures could become so
desirable.
When Corinthian first released their
England footballer figurine series in
November 1995 in readiness for the
forthcoming Euro 96 tournament
held in England, they had found a
gap in the market that soon became
a phenomenon.
Before long, figures were being
released in ‘blister packs’ (where
the football hero could be seen
as opposed to tiny bags) and the
traditional ‘unopened mint condition’
option would now bump up any
future value.
That’s why, in 1999, the
manufactures hit upon the idea of
celebrating the dawn of the new
millennium with a nod towards
England’s 1966 World Cup winning
team through their Pro Stars range.
Cast in the same size (just under 3
inches in height) and housed in a
presentation box, it was released in
the time-honoured way of ‘limited
production’ tagline.
For those who subscribed for this
set of 12 players, there was a hidden
‘Platinum Pack’ inside of a 1966
figurine not on sale to the public and
it came as a free gift for the £30
purchase price.
Yes, I did say 12 players in this set,
with Jimmy Greaves added, and
each one is wearing the winning
colours of red shirt, white shorts
and red socks. For even more detail,
captain Bobby Moore is holding
the Jules Rimet trophy for good
measure. And when unpacked a
Wembley display stand can be
assembled to show off the greatestever
national team.
In 2003, Corinthian were at it again
with another set of 1966 heroes, but
this time cast in the ‘home’ colours of
white/blue/white. Also, each player
Two managers, two captains, but still only one World Cup win.
was cast in a pose that, when put on
display, looked like a traditional team
formation of back row standing and
front row kneeling. Even the features
on each player had been given a
complete makeover, although the
hair on Alan Ball does appear to be
rather orange in the lid of the box.
Not content with these tiny figurines,
a much larger model came onto the
market in their Headliners series.
Now standing 6 inches tall, Bobby
Moore has been given much more
detail whilst still holding the World
Cup high in the air.
As the years passed, all major soccer
stars were being cast in miniature
plastic pieces, so it wasn’t difficult
to build a World Cup squad for the
forthcoming France 98 competition,
where England striker Alan Shearer
proved a popular product, swiftly
followed, post tournament, by
“Wonder Boy” Michael Owen.
A special four-piece set was released
for the much anticipated “golden
generation” to shine at the 2002
World Cup finals, where new boss
Sven-Goran Eriksson and his captain,
David Beckham, is rubbing shoulders
with Sir Alf Ramsey and his reliable
skipper Bobby, the latter being cast in
a different pose to previous figurines.
All in all, collecting these little bits of
plastic was much more interesting
than the standard Panini sticker
book.
“Wonder Boy” Michael Own is the latest
addition to collect dust on the shelf.
Having joined the Robins at 12-years-old after being
spotted playing for local side Bristol Central, Lloyd Kelly
made his professional debut in August 2017 during a
5-0 thrashing of Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Cup.
A versatile defender at ether left-back or centre-back,
Kelly rounded off his first season as a professional
by earning the Senior Reds’ Young Player of the Year
award.
He chalked up 35 Bristol City appearances (all
competitions) the following year as the Robins marched
to an eighth-placed finish in the second tier, the Club’s
best result in over a decade and earned himself a first
call-up to the England U21s.
In May 2019, the young defender earned a move to the
top-flight as AFC Bournemouth secured his signature
for an undisclosed fee.
‘He’s one of our own’ is an often-used chant in football
and none more so than Easton-born Bobby Decordova-
Reid, who joined our Academy aged seven.
After his debut in April 2011 and loans at Cheltenham
Town and Oldham, he broke into the first team in
2013-14 before a loan spell at Plymouth Argyle (2014-
15) followed. Decordova-Reid would be moved from
midfield to striker by then Head Coach Lee Johnson
at the start of the 2017/18 season, during which he
scored 19 goals including a hat-trick against Sheffield
Wednesday. He scooped a place in the EFL Team of
the Year and City’s Player of the Year award.
It was a fitting farewell as he ent to join Cardiff in
the Premier League before an eventual to switch to
Fulham, after an initial loan spell at Craven Cottage.
Much more than a targetman, with a goal-poacher’s instinct
and a smile to boot, Diédhiou spent four years in BS3
where he scored 51 goals in 169 appearances, including
four braces. Diédhiou started his professional career in
France at Sochaux, ASM Belfort, Ajaccio and Clermont.
He joined City from Angers SCO in June 2017 on a
four-year contract for a record transfer fee of £5.3 million,
scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win over Barnsley.
He helped the Robins reach the semi-finals of the
Carabao Cup, scoring in the 2-0 win over Premier League
opponents Stoke City in the Third Round. That campaign
he scored 14 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions,
finishing only behind Bobby Decordova-Reid.
His brace at the Riverside Stadium against Middlesbrough
in February 2021 saw him pass 50 goals for the Robins in
what would be his final season with the club.
After impressing on loan in the 1991/92 season, City
would go on to break their transfer record to sign Cole
that sumer and he would continue his good form in the
newly-rebranded Division One, following the creation of
the Premier League.
With 12 goals in 29 appearances, the young striker attracted
plenty of attention, and it was Newcastle United who
swooped for the 22-year-old for a club record £1.75million.
His career certainly sought after the trophies as he later
joined Manchester United where he returned 121 goals in
all competitions between January 1995-December 2001.
Cole retired from football in November 2008 after a brief
spell with Nottingham Forest in the Championship. He remains
fourth in the Premier League’s all-time top scorers
charts with 187 goals and is regarded as one of the best
strikers in Premier League history.
