GUN (full band) :: At O2 Academy Islington,
London. Glaswegian rockers GUN are back with
their brand new album, ‘The Calton Songs’. The
album that takes its name from the area of
Glasgow where the band grew up, and where
they still write their music. This record is about
celebrating the road that GUN have taken to
reach this point, these new versions of great
songs are cut through with un-ironic nostalgia
but this is a band with an eye on the horizon for
what’s to come, not what’s over their shoulder in
the past. To celebrate the release of ‘The Calton
Songs’ the band will tour a run of fully-fledged
electric shows throughout November and
December that will culminate in a massive
Drever is an astonishingly fine interpreter of
others’ songs, with an increasingly frequent
knack for concocting seriously smart lyrical
Following the huge success and popularity
of Phil Cunningham’s Christmas
Songbook over the last 16 years, the show
will be returning to venues across Scotland
this December, bringing musical Christmas
cheer for the whole family.
Phil and his talented musician friends will hit the road for seven shows, bringing their
special brand of festive entertainment to Aberdeen, Perth, Stirling, Glasgow, Dumfries
and Edinburgh. The performances will feature modern and traditional Christmas music
and outstanding musicianship, as well as heartwarming anecdotes from the group.
Phil will be joined by some of the finest musicians on the Scottish folk scene including
Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, John McCusker, Kris Drever, Ian Carr and Kevin McGuire, along with a special guest brass band.
Phil Cunnginham said: “We can’t wait to hit the road and take the Christmas Songbook on tour across Scotland again this year. The show has
grown a lot over the years and has become part of people’s festive traditions. Last year’s tour was derailed a little by Covid so we can’t wait to have
a proper, long-awaited Christmas shindig with you all.
“I’ll be joined by some old friends, who happen to be some of the best folk artists in the country. We love bringing the Christmas cheer to towns and
cities up and down the country and it’s always fantastic to see people singing and dancing along!”
Phil Cunningham is a brilliant and innovative instrumentalist, with the fastest fingers in the West. He is fondly known for his days with Silly Wizard
and Relativity and as the quick witted musical partner of the great Shetland fiddler, Aly Bain.
Also widely recognised from his television and radio presenting, Phil is a true ambassador for traditional music, having been involved in some of the
seminal programmes that enabled Scottish music to walk tall. Phil also has the gift of the gab – his effortless banter can have a packed hall falling
about in the aisles.
He will be joined by an impressive mix
of lead vocalists, including the
inimitable Eddi Reader, who has
celebrated a career spanning over
three decades and has effortlessly
developed into one of popular music’s
most thrilling performers, as well as
Karen Matheson OBE, recognised the
world over as the lead vocalist of
Celtic supergroup Capercaillie and
award-winning Orcadian roots singer
and guitarist Kris Drever.
The line-up also includes multiinstrumentalist
John McCusker, one of
Scotland’s most accomplished and
versatile musicians, Ian Carr, known
for his original and eclectic approach
to traditional guitar music, and highly
sought after double bassist Kevin
McGuire.
SNJO pay homage the world's most
excellent jazz musician and composer -
'Duke Ellington' with concerts in
Edinburgh, St Andrews + Glasgow
GIGnotes ..... Thu 1 Dec – Edinburgh, Queen’s Hall / Fri 2 Dec –
St Andrews, Byre Theatre / Sat 3 Dec – Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
The Scottish National Jazz
Orchestra pay homage to one
of the world's most excellent
jazz musicians and composers -
Duke Ellington in a series of
concerts in December.
Known as The Duke, Edward Kennedy Ellington is considered amongst the
world’s greatest jazz musicians and composers with a musical legacy covering
six decades. He reached out and touched a worldwide audience in a fashion that
may never be equalled with music that was evocative, emotional, and richly
textured in mood.
The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra has chosen a fabulous programme of foottapping
favourites, infectious swing, mellow mood, and contemporary jazz to
inspire and entertain all. Great tunes such as Mood Indigo or Caravan will
alternate with less familiar pieces, but all are guaranteed to produce an evening
not to be missed!
“It is testimony to both the band and the music that it all emerged sounding
freshly-minted.” said The Scotsman
In 1958, Ellington met the late Queen following a performance by his orchestra
at an arts festival in Leeds. The two reportedly got on famously and Ellington,
smitten, composed a suite of music that he recorded and sent to her.
The music was supposed to remain unavailable to the public but an album was
eventually released in 1976 following Ellington’s death,” says SNJO’s founder,
and saxophonist Tommy Smith. “I’m really glad that it was because the Queen’s
Suite includes some outstanding writing by Ellington and his co-composer/
arranger, Billy Strayhorn that really needs to be heard and appreciated.”
Among the pieces that comprise the Queen’s Suite is The Single Petal of a Rose,
which has become part of the standard jazz repertoire and was included on the
SNJO’s In the Spirit of Duke album, which was released to international acclaim
in 2013.
“We included three of the movements from the Queen’s Suite on the album
alongside other Ellington classics including Rocking in Rhythm and Black and Tan
Fantasy,” says Smith. “The great thing about Ellington and Strayhorn’s music is
that it spanned some six decades and it maintained its high quality all the way
through and right up to Duke’s death in 1974.”
For Smith, who had the opportunity to play in concert with a number of former
Ellington sidemen as a young musician, it’s an honour to be celebrating
Ellington.
“He’s such an inspirational figure,” he says. “We’ll be following every last
Ellington detail, including the stage set-up, using specially sourced period
trumpet and trombone mutes and playing scores that in some cases were
specially transcribed from Ellington performances. We want to give audiences as
close to the real-deal Ellington experience as possible.”
the Park, or right there, within the commotion of
that street in Austin, Ewan’s burgeoning
reputation is of a musician whose experience
matches his many miles travelled. In 2018,
Ewan MacFarlane played his final show as
frontman of his post GNS band Apollo 440 in
front of 30,000 fans in a sun-kissed Seville. Now
Ewan is back with a new solo album ‘MILK’ which
will prompt a greater discovery of one of
Scotland’s greatest cult talents. 2022 has
proved to be a benchmark year for MacFarlane
as his solo career continues to bloom.
Highlands, Orkney and Edinburgh. It’s bright
spark was the idea of fusing traditional and
traditional-sounding melodies with the beats and
basslines of a mixed bag of more contemporary
influences. As happy playing a small highland
village hall as they are on an outdoor festival
stage playing to tens of thousands, the Shoogles
(as they’re known to their fans) have promoted
Scottish music all over the world for three
The Revillos). Think of the Cramps meeting
Johnny Cash in an unholy alchemy of country,
punk, rock and gospel. Fay’s glorious vocals –
rich, dark and powerful – combine with Allan (So
You Think You’re A Cowboy) Mcdowall’s singing
guitars and harmony vocals to create a perfect
storm to play with your emotions, working with
some of the finest Scottish musicians around.
Support for this show will be from Kirsten
Adamson Singer/songwriter Kirsten summons
the same heart-stopping purity as Sandy Denny,
by way of Emmylou Harris and Kate Bush.
Transcendence runs in the family. Her father
was Stuart Adamson (Skids, Big Country) and
her mother Alexandra, a champion Highland
dancer. With summers spent soaking up the
atmosphere in Nashville with her dad and a
string of leading roles in musical theatre back in
the UK, the teenage Adamson’s course was set.
She sang backing vocals on Big Country’s last
album Driving to Damascus at age 13. By 2010,
she was forging her own career as a vocalist and
keyboard player for indie-folkers Aberfeldy. She
fronted country rockers The Gillyflowers and
more recently shone as half of alt-country duo
The Marriage, and then on a self-titled solo
debut. The austere beauty of her voice has been
a constant motif. In a reflective mood, she’s now
gearing up to release a new solo LP this winter.
witty and heartfelt original songs. He’s now
