ADVERTORIAL: ROCKWOOL UK INSULATION INNOVATION FOR MODERN CONSTRUCTION Paul Barrett, Head of Product Management at ROCKWOOL UK, introduces the latest in non-combustible stone wool insulation. For most buildings insulation has one main function: regulating the temperature on the inside. Without appropriate insulation, the increased demand to heat or cool buildings raises energy consumption, associated costs, and CO ² emissions. In fact, around 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK are caused by heating buildings. Moreover, the EU has calculated that proper insulation can reduce a building’s heating needs by up to 70%. Climate change and the current rise in energy bills have put a spotlight on the need for more energy efficient residential and commercial buildings and made the wider public much more aware of the issue. ROCKWOOL research found that energy efficiency ratings are key to 76% of people when buying or moving home: a figure that has likely only escalated given recent energy price increases. We are also seeing greater consumer awareness of fire performance given its media attention, meaning purchasers are demanding more from the building fabric of their homes. Next generation insulation material ROCKWOOL insulation consists of stone wool which is made from naturally occurring volcanic rock. Stone wool is versatile, sustainable and fire resilient, making it ideal for applications in the construction industry. Keeping in step with the latest developments in construction methods, ROCKWOOL has developed NyRock technology, a new patented production process that delivers the most thermally efficient stone wool insulation currently available in the UK and Ireland. Recently launched NyRock® Rainscreen 032 and Frame Slab 032 are the first in a series of products that use NyRock technology. NyRock Rainscreen 032 is specifically developed for ventilated cladding systems and sealed structures such as curtain walling. It combines a low thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/mK and a non-combustible Euroclass A1 rating along with independently tested acoustic performance and the potential for thinner wall constructions. NyRock Rainscreen 032 is BBA approved and has a more efficient fibre structure than traditional stone wool products, resulting in improved thermal properties. Created for straightforward installation as well as ongoing performance, the product can be easily fitted around brackets and other challenging details, with slabs designed to ‘knit together’ when tightly butted providing a continuous insulating layer that reduces thermal bridging. For optimum thermal performance in framed structures, NyRock Rainscreen Slab 032 should be combined with NyRock Frame Slab 032, a further new addition to the NyRock range, that is purpose designed for fitting between the studwork of external timber or light gauge steel frame walls. Combined, NyRock Rainscreen 032 and Frame Slab 032 enable U-values to be met with a thinner wall construction versus standard stone wool solutions. Long lasting comfort and safety NyRock products, like all ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation, are built for longevity with independent tests showing that it retains the same thermal and fire resistance properties more than 55 years after installation and, because the product has a high density semi rigid composition, it will not slump over time. ROCKWOOL insulation is fire resilient by nature with no added chemical flame retardants. Capable of withstanding temperatures of over 1000˚C, it works to contain fire and prevent its spread. At the same time, it does not contribute to the emission of significant quantities of toxic smoke. Stone wool insulation, including the new NyRock range, meets all the requirements of the latest building regulation with regards to the thermal performance (the U-value) of buildings, and the need to use non-combustible material for all components of the external walls of relevant buildings over 18 metres high.
