OUR INTERIM HEAD COACH SETS THE
SCENE FOR TODAY’S GAME...
As a coach at QPR, I’ve seen a lot of managers
come and go and one thing I know about this
club is that we are resilient.
It’s one of the values we have as a club and we’ve
definitely shown our resilience in terms of keeping
the players focused on the task at hand. There are
challenges ahead, the next one is right in front of
us this afternoon and I feel great pride that the club
have entrusted me with preparing the team for it.
I’m grateful to Les Ferdinand, the owners and the
board for being quick to give me that responsibility
once it became clear that the manager would be
leaving. I jumped into the role with both feet and
the players’ response has been magnificent. I’ve
just asked them to be responsible and respectful,
to show their resilience to all the noise on the
outside – and to keep their standards high. The
players have set high standards on and off the
pitch, they’re the ones who did all the legwork
to get themselves into a top six position and it’s
now about continuing what they’ve done, keeping
things relaxed and staying on an even keel.
So far they’ve done exactly that, not only in
training sessions but also in our 2-1 friendly win
against Livingston last week. It was important
for the team to pick up a win in that game – we
had been derailed a little bit before the break
and we needed to get back on track. I felt the
players showed their quality against a team from
the Scottish Premiership, a team who had good
players on the pitch and provided a good test that
we stood up to. They impressed me with their
approach, did all the things we asked them to do
and emerged from the game with flying colours.
Make no mistake, these players all want success
and the standard of professionalism in the squad
is very impressive, with the senior players who
drive those standards and the younger players
who are very open to learning.
If I’m being honest, I couldn’t think of a better
game for us to make a statement than this one –
against a team at the top, at home and with our
supporters who want to see the team succeed.
The fans are our 12th man, they are such a force,
the players really do feel that on the pitch and
we’re asking you to create a hostile atmosphere
between kick-off and the final whistle.
Of course, aside from the hours of play, we extend
our hospitality to the Burnley players, staff and
board and hope they have an enjoyable afternoon.
Burnley have proved they’re a very good team
but we’re hopeful of having a full roster to choose
from – and, when that’s the case, we can be a real
pain for any opponents.
Remember, the most important thing is that we’re
all pulling together as a club. Everyone, including
the supporters, has a role to play.
Come on you R’s!
THE VIP SUITES
THE VIP suite executive boxes
run along the back of the
Paddock sections in the lower
South Africa Road Stand.
These boxes were created in
1981, when the Paddock was
converted from terracing to
seating. QPR chairman Jim
Gregory saw this development
as an important innovation to
improve matchday revenue
streams.
In effect, the back of the
terracing which was under
cover was replaced by the
executive areas and those have
since been upgraded several
times over the years.
Each suite caters for 12 guests,
who experience the matchday
atmosphere in a private and
spacious environment. They
are looked after by dedicated
waiting staff and enjoy a sitdown
three-course gourmet
meal with complimentary drinks.
Along with unrivalled views of
the pitch through the glass
windows, there are plasma
screens with satellite TV for the
latest football scores coming in
hoops
Jimmy, we’re back in action today after a fourweek
break. Has it seemed weird to be fully fit
yet playing no competitive football right in the
middle of the season?
Well, it’s something that’ll probably never happen
again, will it? This has been a good reflection
period –I think it’s been very beneficial for us to
have the opportunity. The break probably came
at a good moment because the results leading
up to it speak for themselves and we needed
that time to reflect.
From watching the World Cup on TV, what have
you made of the tournament?
I think it’s been really exciting! It’s completely
different, say, to watching the Premier League
and some of the nations you might not have
expected to do so well have been amazing. For
anyone who’s in football, the World Cup is a really
great learning experience. Watching Brazil the
other night, for instance – if you want to know
how to be a top quality centre-back, Marquinhos
and Thiago Silva have given an absolute
masterclass.
Obviously the break was far from uneventful at
QPR, with the manager’s departure – how did
that affect the players?
There haven’t been any negative repercussions.
As much as we miss Mick and the members
of staff he took with him, we’ve been cracking
on. We still have a style, a structure and many
other things we took from Mick and training has
been intense – Hally’s been really good with us.
The football we played in our friendly against
Livingston was good, the atmosphere around
the group was very positive and we’ve got people
coming back to fitness. I think we’re all excited
about the rest of the season.
16 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
We’ve seen several different combinations in
central defence so far this season, with four
of you contesting two places. Does the extra
competition mean greater motivation?
It definitely stops you getting lackadaisical,
for sure. As I’ve said before, I think it’s really
healthy and positive. Everyone wants to play,
we’re all fit and available and, when you’re
surrounded by quality centre-backs, it rubs off
on you and makes you a better player. We’re
all very different players – you’ve got Leon’s
experience, Jake has a different background in
the game and the number of times I’ve played
with Rob already, we’ve done well together.
You’ve lined up alongside each of the other
three at some stage this season – do you
need to adapt your style depending on who
you’re playing with?
Not really. I think you just have to bring the best
version of what you bring to the table and not
get distracted by other players – the important
thing is concentrating on what you do well.
Clean sheets speak for themselves and we
achieved quite a few earlier in the season, so
we’d like to start getting back to those sooner
rather than later.
You spent five years with today’s opponents,
Burnley. What are your memories of your time
at Turf Moor?
Burnley was a wonderful experience for me, it
was the stepping stone I needed to bridge the
gap from being an academy footballer to playing
a man’s game. At the time I was surrounded
by top Premier League centre-backs and I’m
grateful to have been given that opportunity.
Burnley was a really good club for young players
– even if they didn’t have that many coming
through into the first team, they always gave you
the opportunity to go out on loan and develop
that way. I had five or six loan spells during my
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
17

hoops
time there and overall it was a really positive
experience. Obviously at the same time, playing
only a handful of first-team games for your club
is not what you want – which is why I made the
decision to go and pursue a career elsewhere.
Burnley’s squad has undergone an overhaul
since they were relegated last season, but
do you keep in touch with any of your former
team-mates?
It’s a different Burnley now from what I remember
– there’s a different manager and different staff,
a lot of new players and they play a different style
of football. But yes, I’ve stayed friends with the
people who are still there, absolutely – although
we’ll be enemies this afternoon!
As you mentioned, our form going into the
break wasn’t great. Should we regard today as a
kind of reset?
Yes, it has been a reset and a chance to freshen
our minds, I think. The talk around Mick leaving
was maybe difficult for some of the lads to
handle and it’s better to have had the Band-Aid
ripped off so we could move on and concentrate
on ourselves. This period has been really useful,
we’ve reflected on the things we’ve done well so
far this season and talked about the things we
need to do better.
In a way, is it ideal to be resuming the season
against the league leaders?
If we win today, it’ll be a really good marker for
us to beat the team that’s top of the table and
carry that into the three games coming up later
this month against Preston, Cardiff and Luton.
None of those games are going to be easy but
the best way to approach them is to start with a
win against Burnley. If that doesn’t happen, it’s
important not to panic – there’s a long way to go
and one thing we’ve learned from last season is
that it’s vital to make sure you keep picking up
results and stay in the pack.
deflected into his path.
QPR pressed for an equaliser and
skipper Ilias Chair steered the
ball around Ben Wilson, but found
the angle too tight to squeeze
his shot over the line.
Sky Blues goalkeeper Wilson was
also kept busy in the second half,
tipping over a ferocious longrange
drive from Rob Dickie.
But the R’s were caught on
the break with 12 minutes
remaining as Gyokeres latched
onto Callum O’Hare’s pass and
tucked a clinical finish beyond
the helpless Seny Dieng.
SINTON
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back
to Loftus Road for today’s game against
Burnley.
As I write these notes, Burnley sit top of the
league, having been excellent up until the break
for the World Cup. After being relegated from the
Premier League last season, they look well on
course to make an immediate return there with
Vincent Kompany as manager.
Prior to the break they had lost just once in their
last 20 league and cup games, which is a very
impressive record and demonstrates how tough a
test we face today.
During the break it was hugely disappointing for
everyone at the club to see Mick Beale decide to
leave and become the new manager of Glasgow
Rangers up in Scotland. Having turned down a
chance to possibly manage in the Premier League
with Wolverhampton Wanderers only a few weeks
beforehand, it was disappointing to see him leave
our club so soon afterwards, along with some of
the coaching staff.
However, we cannot dwell on that now – we have to
move forward and that is what everyone at the club
will be looking to do. Despite a disappointing run of
results prior to the break, in which we picked up just
one point in our last five matches, we are still in a
very good position as we look towards the second
half of the season. We have shown we are a good
team and some of our performances and results
have been excellent, so there is certainly lots to look
forward to as we restart the season today and in
the weeks and months to come. Hopefully some of
our injured players will be back today or in the near
future as we aim to get back to picking up points
from now until the end of the season.
As we look towards appointing a new manager/
head coach, I am sure you will get behind Paul Hall
and his coaching staff as he guides the squad for
however long he is asked to do so. Paul has been at
the club for many years and has done an excellent
job in bringing through some of the younger
players in the squad. I am sure he will get all the
help he needs until a permanent appointment is
made and I know he is really looking forward to the
opportunity he is now presented with. Along with
everyone here at the club, I wish Paul and his staff
all the very best.
The break for the World Cup has come at a
strange time for everyone, right in the middle of
the season and it will be very interesting to see
how teams start after a long interruption.
Usually, going into a season, teams will have had a
few friendly games in preparation for that to begin.
For clubs at our level, I think that will have been
difficult but we had a very useful workout behind
closed doors against Livingston and recorded a
22 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

hoops
good 2-1 victory where we played well for large
parts of the game. As I said, it will be interesting to
see if the break has a positive or negative effect
on teams, their performances and results.
So the World Cup is well and truly now at the
business end of the tournament and it has, as
always, been enjoyable to watch and follow. We have
seen the usual shock results in the group stages of
the tournament, some wonderful goals, excellent
individual performances, controversial decisions
and the usual drama and heartache that every
World Cup always produces. As I write these notes,
we are at the quarter-final stage – the last eight and
there are some great games to look forward to.
Netherlands v Argentina, Croatia v Brazil, England
v France and Morocco v Portugal.
We will know the outcome of these games well
before we arrive at the stadium for today’s game
and, as a proud Englishman, I hope England have
overcome a very impressive French team and
progressed to the last four of the tournament.
OFFICIALQPRFC // @OFFICIALQPR // @QPR // WWW.QPR.CO.UK
As this is our last fixture at home before the
festive season, I would like to wish everyone a very
happy Christmas. For many reasons, it has been a
really challenging and difficult time for everyone
and I hope this Christmas gives us all a chance to
spend time with those we love and cherish.
Thank you once again for the incredible support
you have given the team throughout the season
so far, both at home and away matches. That
support should never be taken for granted – it is
really appreciated and makes a huge difference to
the team on the pitch.
Let’s really get behind our team today as we look
to get a valuable three points on the board. Be
loud and be proud of who we are – We are QPR.
Enjoy the game.
COME ON YOU R’s
Burnley
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
Burnley emerged from
the World Cup break
entrenched at the top
of the Championship table
– a position that many
would have predicted at
the start of the campaign.
Relegated from the
Premier League on the
final day of last season to
end their six-year spell in
the top flight, there is no
question that the Clarets’
primary target is to secure
an instant return.
Despite a slow start,
Vincent Kompany’s team
look well equipped to
achieve that goal and
arrive at Loftus Road with
just two league defeats
on their record – the
second of those in their
most recent away game at
Sheffield United.
The other setback came
early in the season, when
the Lancashire side went
down 1-0 at Watford – the
only occasion on which
they have failed to find the
net, averaging almost two
goals per game.
Having managed just
a single victory in their
opening five matches,
including a 3-3 draw at
home to Blackpool when
they twice surrendered
a two-goal lead, Burnley
clicked into gear with a
5-1 thrashing of Wigan.
That launched a 14-game
unbeaten run, in which the
Clarets displayed ample
evidence of a resilient
streak, overturning a twogoal
deficit to triumph 4-2
at Sunderland and coming
from behind with injurytime
winners against
Reading and Rotherham.
Despite a 5-2 reverse
at Bramall Lane, they
recovered to see off
local rivals Blackburn 3-0
in their next game and
remain top of the pile.
The Gaffer
Four times a Premier League
winner with Manchester
City, Vincent Kompany has
now been entrusted with the
task of returning Burnley to
the top flight at the first time
of asking.
The former City captain lifted
four league titles – along with
two FA Cups and four League
Cups – during his 11-year spell
at the Etihad Stadium, where
a statue of him now stands to
mark his stellar contribution to
the club’s history.
Kompany, who also accumulated
89 caps for Belgium and
skippered them to third place at
the 2018 World Cup, returned
to his homeland to launch his
coaching career after leaving
Manchester in 2019.
Initially appointed playermanager
at Anderlecht –
where he had started out as
a defender before moving to
Hamburg and then City – he
relinquished the managerial
role to continue playing until
the following summer.
However, in 2020 Kompany
hung up his boots and resumed
as manager, guiding Anderlecht
to fourth and third-place
finishes, as well as a Belgian Cup
final appearance, before taking
on the Turf Moor challenge.
Danger Man
Only Chris Wood has netted
more Premier League
goals in a Burnley shirt
than experienced marksman
Ashley Barnes, now in his ninth
full season at Turf Moor.
Barnes started out at Southern
League level with Paulton
Rovers before Plymouth
snapped him up at the age of
17, but he was unable to nail
down a regular spot in the
Pilgrims’ line-up.
Following loan spells with
Oxford, Salisbury, Eastbourne
and Torquay, he made another
temporary move to Brighton in
2010 and made an immediate
impact with the Seagulls,
scoring four goals in eight
games.
The transfer soon became
permanent and Barnes
went on to play a key role in
Brighton’s promotion to the
Championship a year later,
finding the net 18 times and
going on to register 53 goals in
all for the club.
Burnley signed him in January
2014 and he featured in the
side that sealed a place in
the Premier League that
summer, later battling back
from a cruciate ligament injury
to continue his goalscoring
exploits in the top flight.
Year on Year
1882:
Originally formed as
Burnley Rovers, the club
were soon renamed
Burnley FC and moved to
Turf Moor, which remains
their current home, shortly
afterwards.
1921:
The Clarets put together a
remarkable unbeaten run
of 30 matches to secure
their maiden Division One
title – a record which stood
until Arsenal’s Invincibles
surpassed it in 2004.
1960:
After several near misses,
the title returned to Turf
Moor on the very last day
of the campaign as Harry
Potts’ team qualified for
European football for the
first time.
1987:
Goals by Neil Grewcock and
Ian Britton earned Burnley a
2-1 victory over Orient on
the final day of the season
to stave off the ignominy of
relegation from the Football
League.
1998:
Bury boss Stan Ternent
joined the Clarets as
manager, launching a
six-year reign that laid the
foundations for a revival in
the club’s fortunes as they
returned to the second tier
in 2000.
2009:
Wade Elliott’s early strike was
enough to earn a 1-0 win
against Sheffield United in
the Championship play-off
final and end Burnley’s 33-
year exile from the top flight.
QUEENS PARK RANGERS 2
BURNLEY 0
SATURDAY 27TH JANUARY 1973
FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
RANGERS put on a quality display of passing
football to secure victory in this vital Division Two
promotion clash.
With two points for a win and only two clubs
promoted to the top flight in those days, a glance
at the league table before kick-off illustrated how
important the fixture was…
It was a mild winter’s afternoon, with the pitch soft
and heavy. Cameras from BBC1’s Match of the Day
programme were in attendance to cover the action
and the bumper crowd of 22,518 was Loftus Road’s
best of the season.
Rangers started like a steam train, with Don Givens
having two good opportunities in the opening 10
minutes, but he drilled just wide on both occasions.
Then the Superhoops scored twice in the space
of three minutes. First, 19-year-old midfielder
John Delve marked his home debut by chipping
over a delicate cross which Mick Leach powerfully
headed home.
That excellent move was surpassed by the second
goal in the 17th minute. Givens cut in from the wing
on a swashbuckling run through the mud and beat
three bewildered defenders before lashing a low
drive into the far corner.
It was a great result for Rangers as they closed the
gap at the top to one point. On the final whistle, our
ecstatic supporters spilled on to the pitch chanting
“Easy…Easy…Easy…”
As a footnote, both Burnley (champions) and
Rangers (runners-up) were promoted to the top
flight at the end of that season.
RANGERS: Spratley, Clement, Watson, Delve,
Mancini, Hazell, Thomas, Francis, Leach, Bowles,
Givens. Sub not used: Hunt.
Attendance: 22,518
CLIVE, the first season of the
Premier League was 30 years
ago now – does it only seem like
yesterday?
Definitely! I can vividly remember the very
first game that we played, a live TV fixture
on the Monday night at Manchester City.
There were pyrotechnics, a parachutist
down on to the pitch and cheerleaders
before kick-off.
There was plenty of publicity at the
time, but did anyone realise how big
the Premier League was going to
become?
Oh certainly not. If I am not mistaken, the
actual TV deal for the first season was
in the millions, maybe £300 million. But
nowadays it is in the billions. So no-one
had any idea in 1992/93 how much things
would grow for the Premier League. It has
now become a global phenomenon.
Looking back to that time, QPR could
compete with the very best teams in
the country…
Throughout the early 1990s, Queens
Park Rangers were established in the
top eight of the table. We were probably
punching above our weight at that
stage. The only disappointment for me
was that we didn’t cap it all off with any
trophies, even a trip to Wembley or to the
latter stages of a national cup. Looking
back, although we did very well, it would
have been even better if we had put our
name to some silverware or got close to
winning something.
We also finished as top London club,
which was a meaningful milestone
back then…
Not being disparaging to Queens Park
Rangers, but we were one of the smaller
London clubs in the Premier League.
Obviously it had Chelsea, Arsenal and
Spurs as bigger clubs, but we were
competing with them and doing better
than those teams. So it was a real coup
for us to finish as top London club.
What was R’s manager Gerry Francis
like to work under?
I get asked this question quite a lot about
Gerry. For me, he was the best manager
in my career – he brought my game and
my knowledge of football on leaps and
bounds. When we were behind at halftime
in a match, Gerry was one of the
few people I appeared under who would
not say: “The only reason we are losing is
because you aren’t working hard enough.”
That wasn’t Gerry’s style. He would look
at the opposing team and say: “This is
how we solve the problem.” Therefore it
was a big help. Gerry was the first boss
I had who made me think about how
football is organised in terms of positions
on the pitch. Prior to that, I was a fullback
and I just played my game, but Gerry
told me about positional sense, where
I should be in relation to where the ball
was and where our other defenders were.
That brought an overall improvement in
my performances.
During 1992/93, you only missed one
league game because of injury. In
retrospect, that was a good campaign
for you personally…
Yes, the fixture I didn’t play in was
Manchester United away and I don’t even
recall why I missed it! So it was a really
over from Roy
Wegerle as
Rangers’ regular
good season. I began to flourish under
Gerry and it was the start of a run in the
team that I maintained from then until
I eventually left in 1995. I have to say
playing for QPR was the making of me
and I really enjoyed that part of my career.
That season, you scored three goals
for us including two from penalties.
Were you very confident with spotkicks?
I took over the job at Loftus Road from
Roy Wegerle in the previous season. He
had missed one or two for Rangers so
I said that, if he missed another one, I
would take it on. Lo and behold, he did
miss one so I stepped up to the task.
Sometimes it was daunting and not an
easy job, as anyone can tell you. But I
just had to make sure I got the penalty
on target first of all and then hopefully it
would hit the back of the net.
Many people say you were the best
left-back never to play for England.
How do you react to that?
Modesty doesn’t allow me to say yes
or no! But I have heard that comment
and it is very nice when people say it to
me. It is a regret that I didn’t get into
the England squad but not something I
dwell on too often.
Les Ferdinand was the focal point of
our attacks. What was he like to play
alongside?
Very good. The reason why QPR did
so well in that period was because Les
Everton during
the 1992/93
campaign
more or less guaranteed us 20 Premier
League goals a season. It gave us a great
starting point if another striker could
then chip in with maybe 10 goals and the
midfielders with four or five each. If you
have someone who scores 20 times each
year, then you are halfway there.
We had Ray Wilkins pulling all the
strings in midfield. He was another
magnificent player…
He was a great man too. No-one ever
said a bad word about Ray. He was very,
very competitive as a footballer and
never liked to lose. Also, he would always
encourage younger players to do the
right things and look after themselves.
Ray did the same himself to set an
example to everyone around him.
When Loftus Road was full back then,
the atmosphere was electric…
I can remember those packed houses at
Rangers with an intimate crowd being so
close to you on the pitch. That spurred us
on to play better and was a huge boost
for the players.
Finally, what are you up to nowadays?
I teach PE at a school in Essex. I’ve been
doing it for the last 10 years and the job is
very satisfying and enjoyable.
THE PROGRAMME:
Sixteen pages, price 10p
EDITORIAL SNIPPETS: An
extensive article entitled
‘TALKING ABOUT RANGERS’
set the scene for this match
as follows: ‘One day last March,
Queen’s Park Rangers took a
decision on which the immediate
future of the club probably
depended. In selling Rodney
Marsh to Manchester City,
they risked causing offence to
a majority of their supporters
and robbed their team of a
player with true match-winning
characteristics.
‘Marsh had won his first England
cap and was easily Ranger’s
(sic) top scorer with 17 League
goals…Rangers sought to
sharpen their goalscoring image
in time for this season and, of
course it was to Kenilworth Road
that they came to pay a sizeable
fee for Eire international Don
Givens…
‘Martyn Busby, brother of Luton’s
Viv, broke a leg at Fulham, but
Rangers reacted sharply to this
shock blow, and within days had
splashed out £160,000 to buy
Burnley starlet Dave Thomas in
a deal that caught the big clubs
napping. This took Rangers’
three-year spending bill to
over half-a-million pounds – a
tremendous advertisement for
the ambition and enterprise of
the club’s management…a brave
move by a team that has an
average gate of only 13,000.
‘…By spending large sums this
season, Rangers have left no
doubt about their intentions and,
if there is any fear in the camp,
it is that people are not giving
the support they warrant as yet.
They have scored more goals
than any other Second Division
club – but their best gate is only
17,356, and that was on the day
they paraded record signing
Dave Thomas for the first time.’
HEROES
STAN BOWLES VS
BRANN BERGEN
WEDNESDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER 1976
UEFA CUP FIRST ROUND FIRST LEG
MAGICAL number 10 Stan Bowles grabbed
a glorious hat-trick to illuminate the first
ever competitive European fixture in the
history of Queens Park Rangers.
Putting this momentous occasion into context in
his ‘Bush Telegraph’ match programme editorial
notes that evening, QPR secretary Ron Phillips
wrote: ‘Well here we are “In Europe” at last – and
only about nine years too late. (For the benefit
of our Norwegian spectators, we should explain
that Rangers qualified for European football by
winning the League Cup in 1967 but we were not
allowed to participate as no-one had thought
to make provision in the regulations for a Third
Division club, as Rangers were then, winning a
major trophy.)’
Before a slightly disappointing attendance of
14,698, the R’s took a little while to get going
against Brann’s 10-man defensive rearguard.
But on 29 minutes, Dave Thomas sent in a cross
which David Webb nodded back at the far post
and Bowles pounced to head home.
Three minutes later, ‘Stan the Man’ was on the
scoresheet again. This time he finished rightfooted
from a Don Givens centre which followed
good approach play by John Hollins.
Bowles sealed his hat-trick in the 64th minute
courtesy of a close-range finish. Once more,
Givens provided the assist with a knockdown
from Don Masson’s corner on the left.
Masson was involved again to complete the
scoring with five minutes to go.
Daily Mirror reporter Harry Miller wrote: “Stan
Bowles …collected a hat-trick last night as Queen’s
Park Rangers took their first steps into Europe.
“And on an evening when the unranked
Norwegians made chances and missed them,
Rangers had ever cause to be grateful for the
spot-on UEFA Cup marksmanship of Bowles. His
goals came in the 29th, 32nd and 64th minutes.
Another one by Don Masson five minutes from
the finish gave Rangers a winning margin that
should certainly see them through to the second
round…suddenly Rangers looked a side capable of
challenging better European teams than Bergen.”
Pre-Match Song: Get It If You Want It ~ Gunna
How did you get scouted?
I was on trial at Cambridge the week before and my
Dad told me a scout that he knows wanted me to
come down for a trial and take a look at the club.
What’s the best aspect of being a QPR player?
Probably their philosophy and being able to express
the technical side of the game a lot, playing without
fear and just showcasing my strengths.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
Neymar, because I just like how much freedom
and enjoyment he has playing with the ball at his
feet. I would also say Kevin De Bruyne – he’s an
eye-catching midfielder who likes to take risks
with his passes and can make ones show that
others aren’t able to see.
When was the first football match you
attended?
The first game I went to was an Arsenal one, I
can’t really remember the score because it was
quite a boring match! My first game abroad was
the Madrid derby at Bernabeu Stadium – it was
1-1 and very lively.
Which stadium in the world would you most like
to play in and why?
Either Ibrox Stadium or Anfield, because both
atmospheres are immense. I just want to be able
to step onto the pitch and feel the roar of the
fans. I’ve been to an Ibrox game and it was surreal!
Who’s had the greatest influence on your
career so far?
My parents, because they’ve always been at my
side, through the worst days as well as the good.
I would say especially my Dad because he’s
always believed that I’m able to achieve the goals
I set myself and he’s always there, trying to push
me to become a better version of myself.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I see myself as a first-team player at a good club
in the Premier League, getting a nice goal and
assist bonus each game!
Columnist
MICAH CHUDLEIGH
‘R’ GENERATION WRITER MICAH CHUDLEIGH
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS-ON IN W12
The list of things you could never accuse
QPR of being should start with the word
boring. Foolish of me to think the World
Cup would be the break from club football
that ‘we all needed’; barely a week into the
tournament and the words ‘honesty’ and
‘integrity’ were etched into my nightmares.
‘It was all good just a week ago,’ as Ice Cube
once said. Imagine being Ilias Chair or Seny
Dieng and reading that headline in Qatar.
Much like the fans, these players will feel let
down. It’s been said already that a lot of this
squad have made sacrifices and promises to
family members to be here. It’s a tough reality
for everyone involved, but the business of
football is just that.
Break-ups are never easy, but it is tough
seeing her with a new man already. If you’re
hoping for 500 words of trashing the
outgoing QPR boss, you might want to turn
over. Everything I love about QPR existed
before the previous manager and will exist
after the next one. On top of that, we’re
about to restart our Championship season
and it feels like there’s more important things
to focus on.
I guess the irony is that managers leaving
after five games without a win is par for the
course these days. But as we line up against
Burnley, we have to remember that we’re
still the same team from before the World
Cup, with the same points on the board. We
can’t lick our wounds forever – there are too
many points to play for. What will be with this
season will be and, although some may want
to put an asterisk over it, we find ourselves in
a decent position.
Sixth in the league (albeit on goal difference),
some of the best players in said league and,
as previously mentioned, a lot of points left
to play for. I’d have taken it in August. Losing a
manager isn’t ideal but we’re QPR – the next
manager would be the 21st permanent boss
in my lifetime. I didn’t even bother counting
interim managers. Such is life in W12, we will
move on and adapt – as we always have done.
Get behind the players. I’m not saying link
arms in the Loft and sing ‘We are the World’,
but remember that they’re the ones who
are immediately affected by this. Burnley
is a tough test, but the players have shown
they are capable of rising to a challenge. We
come to QPR to see Chris Willock, Ilias Chair
and Stefan Johansen because they can go
toe-to-toe with the best in the division on
their day. We are still a good, very capable
Championship team and Burnley won’t be
looking forward to this.
As for the next manager, the club clearly has
a philosophy and ‘DNA’ established and will
want a manager that can mesh with that.
Paul Hall has been an excellent servant to this
club and will no doubt lead us with (wait for it),
honesty and integrity in the interim period. It
goes without saying that we’ll back whoever
the next man up is but, in the meantime, let’s
get behind Paul Hall and the boys.
TONY’S TALES
ONE of the biggest disappointments
in my 50 consecutive seasons of
worshipping at Loftus Road was the
time Terry Venables left QPR as manager. It
came as a real bolt out of the blue!
‘Venners’ had been in charge of the R’s
between November 1980 and May 1984.
He was hugely popular with our fanbase as
the Division Two underdogs reached the FA
Cup final, won promotion to the top flight
and then qualified for Europe in successive
seasons.
I felt that something special was building at
Queens Park Rangers and we would surely
win some major silverware in the next year
or two.
All this led to rumours that other clubs were
interested in recruiting Terry’s services.
However, at the final home game of the
1983/84 season against West Bromwich
Albion, he went onto the pitch just before
kick-off and made a passionate broadcast to
the crowd stating that he was going nowhere.
This brought huge cheers from our
supporters and I vividly remember the
burning feeling of jubilation inside me.
Unfortunately, this didn’t last long as
Venables left Rangers shortly afterwards
to take over at Barcelona. I was absolutely
heartbroken.
Speaking at the time, QPR club secretary
Ron Phillips said: “A number of our fans have
queried how this could have happened a few
days after Terry had announced over our
public address system that he was definitely
staying with Rangers. Well, we are quite
certain that Terry made this announcement
in good faith, knowing nothing whatever
of the coming Barcelona offer. When it
arrived, it was obvious that it was the type
of appointment no manager in this country
could resist.”
PORTISHEAD TOWN 2
SUBSTITUTE Ellen Wardlaw snatched the
winner as Rangers twice came from behind
to overcome Portishead Town at Harlington
and reach the second round of the FA
Women’s National League Plate.
The visitors went ahead after only three minutes
through Rhian Robbins, but QPR fought back and
Katie Akerman went close before the equaliser
arrived on the half-hour mark.
Kasha Petit was brought down in the penalty area
and got up to convert the resulting spot-kick
– only for Ellie Strippel to restore Portishead’s
advantage from a corner just minutes later.
The R’s almost levelled before half-time when
Jo Blodgett hit the woodwork – and Ellie
Searle did the same shortly after the restart,
but this time Amelia Cutler tucked away the
rebound to make it 2-2.
The home side continued to push for further
goals and gained their reward when Wardlaw’s
finish put them in front for the first time.
However, Rangers needed a late save by
goalkeeper Katie McLean to preserve that lead
and secure their place in the next round.
COOK & EAT SCHEME TASTES EVEN
BETTER WITH TESCO GRANT
The Trust’s popular Cook & Eat Project has
received a welcome boost with a £1,000
award from Tesco’s Community Grants
scheme.
Cook & Eat has helped a number of people in
the west London area in recent years, as we
aim to tackle local health priorities and also
improve families’ mental and physical health.
Voting was held at Tesco stores nationwide
between July and September, with millions
of customers casting their votes for local
initiatives across England, Scotland and Wales.
QPR Community Trust’s Sinead Friel said: “We
are delighted to receive this grant. Every penny
matters to us as an organisation.
“This £1,000 will help us continue to provide
the really helpful Cook & Eat sessions, which
have made a real difference to the families in
our local community – teaching them skills
which they can use throughout their lives.
“QPR in the Community Trust use the power
and huge reach of the club to develop an
inclusive range of sporting, educational,
cultural and social opportunities, improving
the quality of life for individuals and
neighbourhoods.”
Tesco Community Grants – previously known
as Tesco Bags of Help – is run in partnership
with community-focused charity Groundwork,
who authorise awards to thousands of local
projects every year.
The Tesco scheme has already provided over
£90million to more than 40,000 projects across
Britain.
Groundwork’s national chief executive Graham
Duxbury added: “Tesco Community Grants
continues to give local projects the boost they
need to help their communities thrive.
“We are pleased to have been able to help
so many local good causes over the years
and look forward to seeing what community
organisations can achieve in the future with the
right resources.”
JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER AIDAN MAGEE
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN
I’ve been working in and around football for
many years and I understand how the game
works.
I caught up with Mick Beale at Paddington
station a couple of days after the draw at
Norwich in October.
I collared him for a few moments and told
him it had been many years since a manager
had made a sacrifice like turning down a
Premier League job to stay at QPR. Indeed,
I can’t recall a top-flight club coming for our
manager since December 1988, when Jim
Smith went to Newcastle. We were midtable
in the old Division One then.
To say I was surprised Mick left for Rangers
a fortnight ago is an understatement. He
won’t win the title there this season. There
is no European football, either. The best he
can hope for in the short term is a domestic
trophy and an Old Firm victory.
Anyway, he’s gone. As the board have intimated,
we can’t have a circus of speculation around
our manager every time a vacancy comes up.
Sometimes the reality is more palatable than
what we’re worried might happen.
This is still a very attractive job. We have
some fine players and we are well-placed in
the Championship.
While we’re looking to the future, take a
look at my nephews Cian (left) and Ruari
(right). Here they are lining up for training at
Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium a few
weeks ago – wearing their new QPR kits.
Their dad Liam is a purist and won’t
compromise his football principles. He
believes in knocking the ball around on the
deck, getting on the front foot and sending
the fans home happy after a hard week at
work. He’s only an M&S waistcoat away from
being Gareth Southgate!
Anyway, it’s great to be back. Enjoy today.
