DEAN NICHOLAS
CHCA Head of School
FROM THE
HEAD OF SCHOOL
While CHCA has long been synonymous with community, in the last couple of years, people have come to
appreciate the value of this distinct trait in a new way. Last year, we looked at a world struggling with pain and
division and chose to convey our Christian belief that we can come together, look to God, and find inspiration
that He is working to repair, redeem, and restore. We shared our theme “Together as One” with a special focus on
Ephesians 4. This year as we continue to strive for excellence as we learn, lead, and serve, we acknowledge that
community in Christ must be the cornerstone. So, at the introduction of our 2022-2023 school year, I announced
our decision to continue the “Together as One” theme with a special focus this year on John 17. I have encouraged
all in our community to read and contemplate this passage. As Jesus prays for His disciples as He prepares to leave
the Last Supper, he prays that we would be one and that this unity would demonstrate to the world that God had
indeed sent Jesus and that He loves us in the same way that He loves Jesus. As our primary identity is to be in Christ,
so our most significant community should be the community of believers in Christ. My ultimate prayer is that as
we at CHCA who come from different churches and faith traditions, ethnicities, cultures, neighborhoods, and
backgrounds, would be a community that demonstrates the love and grace of God to each other and to everyone
who encounters CHCA. May we be a beacon, a “city on a hill” to all who wonder if God is still at work in this broken
world and if there remains any civility or goodwill in our society. May every student and parent, every teacher, staff
member, coach and administrator, experience the transformational love of God as we live out “Together as One.”
A STATEMENT OF THEOLOGICAL
INTEGRATION EXTENDED
By Dr. Dean Nicholas, Head of School
Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is intentional
about being academically excellent as well as Christ
centered in all we do. In order to do this thoroughly,
we challenge our students to think about all disciplines
and subjects through the lens of a thoughtful Christian
worldview. To achieve this, our students must have
a general understanding of the Bible, Church history,
theology, and Christian spirituality. They must also be
forced to consider connections between these fields of
knowledge and their other academic disciplines. But this
does not happen by accident. The key to this endeavor
is training our faculty in a methodology we refer to as
Theological Integration. Let me explain the reason
for this approach, what it looks like in the classroom,
and how we are raising the level of understanding and
practice for all our teachers.
CHCA holds to a high view of Scripture. Our first article
in the Statement of Faith reads, “We believe the Bible
to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative
Word of God.” Therefore, the Bible shapes the way we
think about theology and all of life. For this reason, we
study to interpret the Bible so that we can understand
key principles inherent in its teachings (“biblical
principles”). But this is no simple task! Reading
Scripture to mine key principles from a complex book
that was written millennia ago in various cultures and
in numerous languages takes concentrated effort and
careful discernment. And as a multidenominational
school made up of over 160 different churches, there
are many “biblical principles” that we all agree on, but
others are rooted in denominational understandings
and sectarian theological readings. When Presbyterians
and Roman Catholics think about Holy Communion,
they interpret John 6:53 very differently from each
other. Similarly, when Baptists and Pentecostals are
interpreting Acts 2:1-4 and how Christians should
think about speaking in tongues in the church, they will
have very different ways of interpreting the “biblical
principles” for how we should think about this passage
today. Therefore, we are careful to use the language of
“Theological Integration” rather than the older term,
“Biblical Integration” for how we attempt to enrich our
curriculum with Scripture. This alludes to the fact that
in a multidenominational school, certain sectarian or
denominational interpretations of the Bible should not
be given priority by teachers, in their CHCA curricula,
based on their personal interpretations or their church’s
views. So as a school, we focus on what all of us as
Christians believe, and we condense that belief into
five key theological “Big Ideas” based on Cornelius
Plantinga’s Engaging God’s World: A Christian Vision of
Faith, Learning, and Living. These “Big Ideas” are the
central components to the overall story of Scripture
that traditional orthodox Christians have believed
throughout history no matter their church tradition or
denomination. Our five theological “Big Ideas” are: 1) all
humans have a longing and hope for something greater;
2) God is Creator; 3) all creation is broken because of
the Fall when sin entered the world; 4) Jesus’ life, death,
and resurrection provide redemption and restoration
to what is broken; and 5) we can be a part of God’s
restoration through our vocation to bring shalom to a
broken world.
So, on a practical level, when we talk about Theological
Integration, it is the process by which our teachers
engage students to think deeply in a “Christ-centered”
way in all areas of study. And we do this by helping
them see the intersections of their learning—be it
social studies, science, math, literature, art, music,
world language, technology—with our theological
“Big Ideas.” When our faculty design curriculum, they
are trained to find ways to prompt our students to
8

consider our theological “Big Ideas” in their lessons and
broader units. Borrowing from an Understanding by
Design curriculum model, we use “essential questions”
to lead to deep thinking and learning. Some of the
characteristics of “essential questions” are that they
are important open-ended questions that we keep
coming back to throughout our lives; they relate to core
ideas and inquiries within an academic field of study;
and they help students to make sense out of complex
ideas and knowledge. So, we ask theological essential
questions, essential questions that incorporate aspects
of our theological “Big Ideas.” In this way, students are
stretched to make connections between theological
understandings and other areas of learning. As
educators, we find ways to do this at age-appropriate
levels to help students grow in their theological thinking
as they develop their other cognitive skills. This requires
students to reflect on their knowledge and synthesize
it with theological understandings. In this way, we
believe that our students grow intellectually and in
faith development in a way that fosters faith formation
without simple indoctrination. We regularly emphasize
that we want students to leave CHCA as people who
“own” their faith, not those who merely know how to
recite the “right” answers.
This all might sound a bit abstract, so let me share a few
concrete examples. When I train our teachers, I give an
example of a good social studies theological essential
question: What is history? While simple on the surface,
it is deeply complex. In fact, the more we study history,
the more complex that question becomes. But a fourth
grader studying the history of CHCA and an AP U.S.
History student thinking about various methodological
constructs used by modern U.S. historians can talk
about that same question in meaningful ways. What
if we tweaked the question to make it theological? If
we believe in a God who engages in human history,
from the stories of the Old Testament to the most
dramatic example of all—the Incarnation where God
becomes flesh and dwells among us, “How does God
act in history?” A second grader studying the Exodus
might answer that question one way that seems simple
and straightforward, but a more complex variation
of the question in an Upper School AP Government
class might be, “Does God decide the outcome in
democratic elections?” That question challenges a
student to take into account their understandings of
history and government, determinism and free will,
God’s providence, and the effects of a fallen world,
and formulate a response that demonstrates their
best thinking at that moment. And they might answer
it differently a decade later. If you worry that such
thinking feels heavy and complex, remember that ‘ageappropriate’
is a key term in this process. A kindergarten
teacher might ask an appropriate form of the same
question to her students: “How did you see God today?”
That simple variation of the question is preparing
our youngest students to begin thinking about how a
transcendent God is also imminent, always nearby, and
connected to our lives.
It takes work and thinking to prepare lessons and units
that reflect theological integration. And it also takes
work for teachers to learn to think that way themselves.
Consistent theological integration does not happen by
accident! So, over the past two years, I have been working
with the Theological Integration Cohort—a group of 21
educators from all buildings, grade levels, and academic
disciplines. We studied Bible, Theology, Church History,
Faith Formation, and even experienced the backdrop of
our faith as we traveled to the Holy Land. This incredible
group is now going to lead their colleagues in a twoyear
training in theological integration. All of our faculty
and student-facing staff are divided into seven cohort
groups that will study Bible, Theology, Church History,
Faith Formation as well. I will be leading my own cohort
of administrators, helping us think through how we are
thoroughly integrating not just into curriculum but into
all aspects of school life. This two-year program will
become part of all new teacher and staff onboarding
in the future. We believe that for CHCA to live out its
mission as a school that prepares young people to learn,
lead, and serve in the world, we need to be even more
intentional in how we train and execute theological
integration throughout all areas of our school. We are
excited for the journey ahead and for all the ways God
will use our efforts!
FINDING PURPOSE
AT CHCA
CHCA offers numerous opportunities for
students to find their purpose and value.
By Kaveri Easwaran ’24
10

MR. JOE METZGER WAS RECENTLY HIRED AS OUR UPPER SCHOOL
STUDENT LIFE DIRECTOR.
I was curious to understand more about this new role, so I sat down for an interview
with Mr. Metzger. The following is an abridged summary of my interview.
KE: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
AND WHY YOU CAME TO CHCA.
JM: I came to CHCA because I felt God was calling
me into this space. I was searching for a purpose when
I started out after college. I worked in software sales,
landed a good job, and was doing well. But I didn't feel
fulfilled; I didn't have a sense of purpose in what I did
every day. So, when I was offered this job at CHCA, it
was a dream come true. Every day, I have a purpose; I
feel fulfilled with what I am doing, and I know Jesus is in
our midst. At CHCA, I love how I get to serve, help, and
impact as many students as possible daily.
KE: WHAT DOES STUDENT LIFE
DIRECTOR MEAN?
JM: Being Student Life Director means helping
students find what they are passionate about. Also,
I want to help students find a group of people with
whom they will connect, enjoy, and have fun. I actually
call my job the “fun director.” In addition, I oversee
student government, club activities, and school spirit.
Ultimately, I try to help each student find the best
place where they’re happy and passionate about what
they’re doing.
KE: WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE,
AND HOW WILL YOU MEASURE IT?
JM: Success in this job means positively impacting
and improving each student's life. One of the ways I
try to impact students’ lives is by helping them find the
organizations and/or groups that best fit their passions
and aspirations. Success is beyond numbers and
analytics. Ultimately, I believe we are successful if we
are doing what Jesus calls us to do.
KE: WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES TO
ACHIEVING YOUR VISION?
JM: High school years matter. High school is more than
coursework. High school is about the lessons we learn
about ourselves, figuring out what kind of a person
we want to be, and learning how we want to impact
others and the world. Many students do not yet realize
this, and I want to help them see the big picture. And
unfortunately, some students might not be receptive
to this message. I need to work to overcome this
challenge.
KE: WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO OF YOUR
FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE CHCA
COMMUNITY?
JM: CHCA is blessed with a great community of
people. Great things can happen when you have a
Christ-centered community of teachers and parents
who have students’ best interests at heart. I’ve enjoyed
learning how much the teachers care about the kids; it's
unique. Importantly, our students are tremendous. All
these things make my work rewarding and fun.
KE: WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST
OPPORTUNITY FOR ENHANCING UPPER
SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE AT CHCA?
JM: I believe the three keys to leading a joyful life are to
have a purpose, feel valued, and be fulfilled. Therefore,
to enhance Upper School student life at CHCA, I want
to find a place for each student, where they can find
their purpose and connect with like-minded people.
KE: WHAT IS ONE FUN FACT ABOUT
YOURSELF?
JM: I love pickleball!
In conclusion, I appreciate Mr. Metzger's determination
to help students find their purpose and value. I am
grateful to be a part of the CHCA community, which
recognizes the importance of students finding their
purpose so that each of us may grow into the people
God created us to be.
MIND(SET)
OVER MATTER
by Stephen Carter
Director of Entrepreneurship and Sustainability
Open any news story and you’ll be hit with the message—the world
is changing, and fast. Industries are collapsing, new technologies
are forming, and workplaces have evolved at an unimaginable pace.
At the center of this is the question of education:
HOW DO WE PREPARE THE STUDENTS OF TODAY
FOR THE UNCERTAINTIES IN THE WORLD OF TOMORROW?
12

The answer, which reverberates from the innovative programming
at the heart of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, is clear—we
teach them to think like entrepreneurs.
HOW DO YOU TACKLE OBSTACLES READY TO LEARN NEW
SKILLS?
You embrace a growth mindset.
HOW DO YOU MEET NEW CHALLENGES DAY AFTER DAY
AND PERSEVERE?
You develop grit and determination.
HOW DO YOU TAKE RISKS AND STRETCH YOURSELF?
You redefine failure.
These attributes, coupled with generosity, empathy, and
effective communication, form the core benchmarks of CHCA’s
Entrepreneurship and Sustainability program. Starting with
innovative, hands-on education that reaches all learners with
practical training that is far from boring, our program is not only
groundbreaking but also is attracting attention on the national level.
HERE ARE A FEW SNAPSHOTS OF WHAT’S GOING ON:
• We’ve collaborated with local accelerator OCEAN Programs to
create a curriculum which blends entrepreneurial education with
Christ-centered thinking, the result of which is a complete gamechanger
for education.
• We’ve expanded down to Grade 4, with plans to incorporate
curriculum all the way to kindergarten as early as next school
year.
• We have 12 elective courses and a total of five student-run
businesses. Additionally, students can earn the Certificate of
Entrepreneurship as an official designation on their transcript.
• CHCA is the first K-12 school in the world to be accepted into the
exclusive collaborative between the Harvard T. H. Chan Public
School of Health and the Culinary Institute of America.
• With the success of our culinary program, we’ve launched evening
cooking classes for adults with plans to add themed classes for
young children.
• In late November, we’re kicking off a series called “Elevating
the Standard.” The first event will highlight “Women in
Entrepreneurship” and will feature a keynote talk as well as a
panel discussion and networking opportunities for both adults
and students.
Whenever parents or alumni come by to visit the school’s beautiful
greenhouse to learn about Eagle Farms, or tour the state-of-theart
teaching kitchen to hear about culinary entrepreneurship, or
see the students hard at work managing the Leaning Eagle Coffee
Bar or the Mini Cup, the response is always the same: “I wish I had
this when I was in school.”
And we agree—but the exciting news is that we have it now, and it
is changing the lives of our students. And in the end, we all benefit;
the more people who seek opportunities and solve problems, who
collaborate and embrace personal growth, who create solutions
and foster ideas, the better.
In short, what this ever-changing world really needs is more people
who think like entrepreneurs. And at CHCA, that is how we do school.
UNLEASHING GIFTS
IN OUR
WORLD CLASS PROGRAM
By Mackenzie Carnes ’21
Research has shown that singing or playing instruments helps children to learn on a deeper
level, setting and achieving more complex goals. It is also proven that music lessons for
children help to develop a child’s cognitive skills – broadening their imagination, creativity, and
even helping them to manage their behavior. And if that wasn’t enough, singing and playing
instruments are physical activities which require the development of key muscles, including the
core. In 2016, the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute completed
research regarding music and child development. Their data showed music could speed up
brain development in fundamental language development, reading skills, and successful
communication.
At CHCA, we are proud to be one of the only schools in Cincinnati to offer a robust private
music lesson program from PK3 through Grade 12. Not only does CHCA offer countless
opportunities to challenge students towards personal growth and musical excellence, our
school employs 13 highly accomplished and talented private music lesson instructors. Lessons
are open to students with any skill level and experience and with dedicated
lesson space and/or practice rooms at each campus, students have the
flexibility to schedule lessons before, during, or after school.
14
The program offers many opportunities for performances including the
Private Music Lesson Program Spring Recitals and CHCA's Annual ArtBeat
Fine Arts Festival. Under the leadership of Dr. Lydia Woodin, director of the
Private Music Lesson Program, the program strives to provide informed
musical learning, while challenging students towards personal growth.
Last year the Private Music Lesson Program launched its Honors
Program, where 64 students completed at least “100 Days of Practice”,
performed in Studio Classes, and memorized pieces to complete one
of several levels. The highest level had three students completing 250
“Days of Practice” within the school year!
Q&A WITH DR. NICK
Dr. Dean Nicholas is in his second year as Head of School, so we only thought it appropriate to get some early
insights and thoughts about how it’s going and where he sees our school headed. Read on to hear from our leader
affectionately known as Dr. Nick!
IT’S BEEN CLOSE TO 1.5 YEARS NOW AS CHCA’S
NEWEST HEAD OF SCHOOL. AS YOU REFLECT
ON THIS TIME, HOW HAS THE JOURNEY BEEN
SO FAR?
It has been a wonderful start, and as I’ve spent time with
a cohort of new heads of schools from across the country,
I have realized that my situation is unique in some ways.
Many new heads talked about the difficulties of learning
a new place, new people, new cultures. For me, this year
starts my 27th year at CHCA, so fortunately that “discovery
phase” for a new head was a little different. I’ve actually
been here longer than most people, have lived our history,
and know areas for potential growth and change. Also,
many new heads walk into difficult situations where a
school is in crisis. CHCA was just the opposite! Mr. Brunk
took the school to a new level of excellence in his 18 years
of leadership here. I stepped into headship at a school with
academic excellence, innovative programs, outstanding
athletics, fine arts, and robotics programs, a stellar faculty
and staff, good enrollment, and a strong financial situation.
So, this first year and a half has allowed me to see more
of our community, understand at a deeper level how the
school works, and honestly, grow in an appreciation for how
special CHCA is. Sometimes we take that for granted.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT BEING CHCA’S
HEAD OF SCHOOL?
When I was Upper School principal, I often ended my social
media posts with #chcaalumni #thebestpartofmyjob. As an
educator, seeing students you taught, mentored, coached,
directed, took on intersession trips, even disciplined,
grow up into the people God made them to be—that’s
what makes the vocation of educator so powerful and
meaningful. Having those relationships even into the future
is a privilege, seeing those seeds planted grow into trees that
bear fruit! As an Upper School teacher and later principal, I
got to know and watch the development of lots of students.
As Head, that opportunity grows exponentially! Seeing twoyear-olds
in preschool and knowing that I get to do work
that can create the educational paths and opportunities
for those young children to blossom and develop all their
gifts for the good and glory of God is overwhelming and
16

humbling. What has made this place so special to me and
my family are the relationships with colleagues, students,
their parents, and even grandparents. The opportunity for
connections with CHCA’s past and present in this role is
enormous and excite me.
WHAT IS CHCA’S BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY AHEAD?
That is a wonderfully impossible question to answer. I’d like
to give you a list of about 10 things that I could argue are the
“biggest”! But I will try to encapsulate it in one phrase that
some of us have been talking about lately. How do we grow
into being a “legacy school”? I learned quickly when I moved
here that when people ask you in Cincinnati, “Where did you
go to school?” they mean high school, not college. In a city
with lots of great historic schools, we need to think about
ourselves beyond the great “startup school,” the Cincinnati
“new kid on the block,” in the educational landscape. We
always need to keep our innovative ethos, but we must
build upon our past in ways that solidify our future. We
need to be engaging our alumni at greater levels. It excites
me to have more alumni on staff and see more and more of
them enrolling their children. We need to build our alumni
community even more. We need to continue to recognize
our past, and establish traditions that will allow alumni to
be reminded of their time here and give current (and future
students) a sense of the history and tradition that they are
a part of as a CHCA Eagle. And to help sustain that future,
we also need to think about things like endowments and
creative alternative revenue models to strengthen our
financial position even more. Those financial steps help us
increase teacher compensation which allows us to retain
and attract the best and the brightest talent from across the
country.
WHERE DO YOU SEE CHCA IN THE NEXT 3 TO
5 YEARS?
Our next five years are going to be exciting. The landscape
of education is changing. We have always been at the
leading edge of Christian education, and that will continue.
At the Upper School level, we’ve continued to increase the
level of individualization of experience. Education should
not be a ‘one size fits all’ experience, and we will continue
to create flexibility in the parameters of a school day, course
options, and modes of learning (traditional, blended, online
options). We need to think about learning at deeper levels
around technology throughout all grades but at the same
time, create outdoor educational opportunities so that our
students learn to unplug and connect to natural spaces,
appreciating and stewarding God’s creation. Also, our
student and family population has grown in diversity of race,
ethnicity, and nationality, but our faculty and staff do not
reflect that same level of diversity. That is an area we will
continue to grow. And finally, because of our Theological
Integration training, five years from now, our ability as
a school to reflect Christ-centeredness throughout the
school, top to bottom, in every class, curricula, and program,
will be unique to any Christian school in the country. We
must always remember that Christ-centeredness holds
together everything that we do here.
YOU’VE BEEN AT CHCA FOR OVER 26 YEARS.
WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY TO DATE?
Unfair question. I should get one per year. Here is a list of
“fondest” memories:
• My sons graduating (Jake 2020 and Pete 2021)
• Even though it hasn’t happened yet, I believe my son
Abe graduating in May will make the list
• Building an aquaponics system outside of Bethlehem
at Tent of Nations on a Holy Land JTerm, January 2016
• My first Hebrew 3 class in 2000-2001 with Adam
Cool, John Hanto, and Kristen Harmeyer when we
read Jonah, Ruth, Esther, and selected Psalms from
the Hebrew Bible over the course of the year
• My failure in teaching the story of Ehud and Eglon in
2nd Bell in 1996. Those students remember…
• Rushing back from an Israel trip in June, then being
in the dugout for the last inning of our State Baseball
Championship in 2021
• Our theatrical performances of Children of Eden and
Les Misérables
• Seeing the Beak Squad 4028 in St. Louis for the FIRST
Robotics World Championships in their first year as a
team
• Being in the broadcast booth for the first game of the
season this year with Athletic Director Ryan Betscher
’00, 7/8th Grade Football Coach Chad Leland ’00,
and Joe Ashbrook ’00—all members of my first year
freshmen Old and New Covenants course in 1996-
1997 and people I’m now fortunate and honored to
call friends
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions,
prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for all people— for kings
and all those in authority, that we
may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness. This is good,
and pleases God our Savior, who
wants all people to be saved and to
come to a knowledge of the truth.”
– 1 Timothy 2:1-4
COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
DR. D. MICHAEL LINDSAY
President, Taylor University
Lindsay presented all graduates with a gift of
his most recent book, Hinge Moments: Making
the Most of Life’s Transitions, as he encouraged
CHCA graduates to “be oaks of righteousness”
they are called to be, as they embarked on one
of their biggest transitions yet. He encouraged
them that the Lord calls us to places we may not
expect, and that there we are to be a blessing to
others as we have been blessed. He affirmed
that the place where you are called is where your
heart’s deepest needs meet, and to be obedient
to the Lord and where He may be calling you.
A BIT ABOUT OUR
VAL & SAL
MARCUS
MARCUS ROBERT DALEY
Class of 2022 Valedictorian
University of Notre Dame
Glynn Family Scholar
Marcus joined CHCA as a freshman and can undoubtedly say
that being a part of this community and having the privilege
of a CHCA education has been one of his greatest blessings.
A National AP Scholar with Distinction, having completed 11
AP courses and 12 AP exams, he received seven awards for
academic excellence over his four years at CHCA. He was a
member of both the National Honor Society and JNCL Latin
Honor Society. Marcus earned the Ohio State Seal of Biliteracy
in Latin. Outside the classroom, Marcus was passionate about
service, receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award all
four years and accumulating over 400 hours during his time at
CHCA. Marcus loved working as an SOS leader for Mountain
TOP, Eagles Tutoring, and Symmes Volleyball and he served as
an SOS Board Member both junior and senior years. Marcus
is most proud of the independent math tutoring business he
began after his sophomore year. He worked with 25 individual
clients and loved every second of teaching mathematics ranging
from Pre-Algebra to Calculus I. Marcus also cherished his time
as a Peer Advisor, a Student Ambassador, golfer, and member
of the Academic Team. He had amazing times with the CHCA
Theater Department as a member of Off the Cuff, Director in
The One Act, and playing the role of a southern sugar-daddy
(Abner Dillon) pursuing his unrequited love interest in 42nd
Street. Marcus was named the Rotary Club Student of the
Month and was most honored in being nominated and selected
for the Neyer Foundation Christian Leadership Award for the
Class of 2022. Marcus is forever reminded he would never be
where he is if it weren’t for the people at CHCA. He headed to
the University of Notre Dame this fall to study Mathematics
and Classics as a Glynn Family Scholar, and shares that he’ll
never forget the community that got him to where he is today.
CHCA ALUMNI
LEGACY
40

Hang around CHCA for any amount of time, and you will see alumni all around – in classrooms
teaching the next generation of eagles, cheering in the stands, working backstage, serving on
the Board, coaching teams, volunteering...the list goes on.
We’ve recently been talking a lot about legacy at CHCA. Perhaps it moved to the forefront
when we celebrated our 30 th Anniversary a couple of years ago. Or perhaps it’s because now,
more than any time in CHCA’s history, we have more alumni here with their children (and
now graduating their children, such as the Jon Adams ’95 family), and more alumni returning
to work at CHCA. As each year passes, those numbers increase. Families are building their
legacies here and we couldn’t be more excited about that!
Many of those families you will see sprinkled throughout this magazine. One such family, you saw featured on the
cover. Jonathan and Jessica (Martin) Snyder ’98 were not only two of the first of over 2,500 students to walk across a
graduation stage at CHCA, they have since returned with their four children and have also served in many capacities
– Jonathan on the board for six years, and also as a youth basketball coach, and Jessica on the Parent Teacher
Fellowship (PTF) Board, the newly formed Champions Club, and also as a youth lacrosse coach and a long-term sub
in our Lower School. The list goes on. Legacy.
Merriam Webster defines ‘legacy’ as: something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from
the past. We can think of few things better to receive than the gift of a Christ-centered, academically excellent,
CHCA education, where students find their place, grow their gifts and talents, and become who God made them to
be—world changers.
Thank you to ALL of our alumni, who continue to grow their legacy through CHCA.
LAUREN MYERS
This past summer, Lauren made the brave
decision to travel to Chicago, IL and audition
for the Maverick City Gospel Choir. After
a two-day audition, she received an email
letting her know that she had made the
choir! A month later, they announced that
the choir would be joining Maverick City
Music and Kirk Franklin on their Kingdom
Tour this past summer! This was super
exciting but also a giant leap of faith for
Lauren. The moment she walked on stage
with Maverick City is one that she will never
forget. Her all-time favorite moments of
the show happened when she would look
into the audience and see people with the
biggest smiles on their face, people crying
because they were overwhelmed by the
Spirit, and people praying for the people
around them. She has never felt the power
of the Holy Spirit and His presence so clearly
until these Maverick City shows. It was the
best experience of her life.
HALEY WILLIAMS
Haley started writing music when she was
very young and just recently started posting
some of her songs on her social media.
“Faded” was one song she had posted on
her social media and a family friend, who is
a producer, offered to help her record it. It
was such an amazing experience for Haley.
She loved getting to see how songs work
behind the scenes. “Faded” is one of her
favorite songs she has written and listeners
can find it on all streaming platforms. She
is very thankful to God for the gifts that
He has blessed her with and the incredible
opportunity to record her first song. Be on
the lookout for more from Haley! She is
currently attending Liberty University.

A LOOK AT SOME OF THE FUN CAREERS
YOU CAN FIND CHCA ALUMNI WORKING IN
CHARLIE ANDREWS ’14, Owner of Badges Drum Shop
After growing up as a drummer in CHCA’s music program I spent time exploring different aspects of the music
industry in college and held some internships that showed me the excitement of running a business and building a
brand. While my major and location bounced around, my love of drums never wavered. I landed a “regular” job right
after college, but a former college internship boss saw my lack of excitement for it and encouraged me to build a
business around my unique knowledge base – drums, drumming, drummers – so I decided to take that leap of faith.
After developing a business plan, securing dealerships, and renovating a historic building in Mason, I opened Badges
Drum Shop just a few months after I graduated in 2018 and never looked back. Here, I’ve had the opportunity to
create an authentic brand around the joy of drumming and work with drummers near and far. Now in the shop’s
“new” historic location at 127 W Main in Mason, I can say without reservation that everything makes sense now – the
feeling of being different, the rigor of CHCA’s classes and music program that trained me to do difficult things, and
my college journey that exposed me to people and opportunities that helped me carve out a place in this industry. All
of that came together to make me better at this business, which is my way to make a difference.
An interview with
ALIVIA (JOHNSON) ROSE ’09,
Executive Assistant to Jeff and Dillon Ruby
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT
JEFF RUBY CULINARY ENTERTAINMENT?
In November, it will be 10 years that I have been
working here. I started out working at Carlo & Johnny
as a hostess for some extra money through college and
haven’t left yet.
HOW DID YOU GET THE POSITION OF BEING
THE EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT?
Originally, I was approached by the Director of HR and
joined the office as their Corporate Office Manager.
I’ve worked multiple positions while being at the
company but the way that I was promoted to Executive
Assistant to Jeff Ruby and Dillon Ruby was really neat.
While I was working as the HR & Training Coordinator,
I would fill in for Mr. Ruby’s Assistant when she went
out of town, on vacation, etc. It was shortly thereafter
that Britney Ruby Miller (CEO of Jeff Ruby Culinary
Entertainment) approached me and said that Mr. Ruby
specifically asked if I would become his assistant. It’s
been four years since then and I am genuinely in love
with my job.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR
YOU?
I manage literally every aspect of Mr. Ruby’s life. I work
for him as a personal assistant but also as an executive
assistant. I handle all scheduling for him, manage his
calendar, and coordinate all details for him – along with
attending meetings and assisting in the major projects
that he has going on. I am in constant communication
with him throughout the day and am on call for
whatever he needs. For example, we are opening a
new restaurant in October and I’ve been able to work
very closely with him on multiple projects for the new
location. For Dillon, I manage his calendar, scheduling,
assist with high-level projects that we have going on
throughout the company, and help with HR matters
when needed.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
My favorite part of my job is working directly with Jeff
Ruby. He is an incredible boss that loves giving back
to the community. Even though I am on call for him,
he is grateful and is always mindful of my time. Since
my dad passed away, he has become something of a
father-figure to me and I know my parents would love
that I work for him and would be proud of the work I
do each day.
A GROWING
LEGACY
Several alumni have chosen to return to CHCA
and build into the next generation of students who
will impact the world for Christ. We are thrilled to
welcome them back to CHCA to build upon the
very foundation from which they launched! They
are key to growing CHCA’s legacy.
ALUMNI
AT WORK
Pictured: Rachel Kolar, and Lukelele aka “Lucas” at World Equestrian
Center in Ocala, Florida in the $75,000 Hunter Derby in March of 2021
RACHEL KOLAR ˇ17,
Owner of Kolar Equine Therapy
We started KET, Kolar Equine Therapy, in the fall of 2019, after seeing
and experiencing a need for quality care and therapy of horses. We
partnered with a company called MagnaWave to provide holistic,
non-invasive therapy that has actually been in the equine industry for
over 30 years. But it was the first time it had ever been introduced to
horses in the area.
In June 2022, after an insane series of “Hi God” moments, we
launched Providence Farm. (One of my former teachers, Mr.
Hildebrand, explained this to me as moments in your life where
something happens for a reason, and God points you in a direction
that you never thought you’d take, which is exactly what happened
when we bought the farm.) So it starts that I was showing my horse
at The Kentucky Horse Park. We were supposed to be there for two
weeks. During the first week, my trainer (Karen Reid, fellow alumna
Liza Reid's ’18 mother) heard from another trainer that the owners
of her farm were putting it up for sale. We didn’t think much of it, just
that it was interesting. The next day while showing, my horse and I
had a horrific accident, where we truly thought we may lose him. We
thought he had broken his leg, which is a fatal injury in horses. He
spent the next week in one of the best hospitals in the country, Rood
and Riddle Equine Hospital. After a week, we discovered he came
out with minor injuries, but it would take at least a year to bring him
back the correct way. We started looking at rehab facilities, but soon
realized there weren’t any in the area. When we got home, I mentioned
that this farm was for sale. The next day my mom mentioned this to
a friend, who decided he wanted to see the farm. I called the current
owner and asked if we could come out that day and take a tour. The
three of us arrived at the farm. We walked in. Walked out. And the
50
friend, and now investor, made a full cash offer. To say my jaw hit the
floor would be an understatement. It was the largest smack in the
face from God we had ever received in our lives. It was obvious that
this is what we were meant to do.
Over the next year, we filled our barn to the point where we now
have a waiting list, and have multiple sponsors helping us keep our
horses happy and healthy. So essentially we provide the best quality
care for horses in the Hunter/Jumper sport. After speaking with many
professionals and veterinarians we soon discovered that in order to
maintain a healthy athlete, they need multiple different types of arena
surfaces to maintain tendon and bone health. We’re currently working
on our third surface at the farm, which will be a grass field arena. We
already have a rubber composite material surface in our indoor arena,
and a limestone sand material in our outdoor arena. We treat our
horses like the professional athletes they are, using similar methods
of therapy and training that many other professional athletes use.
There are multiple amazing parts of my job that I love, the first being
when you can see a difference in the horse after they’ve been treated.
It’s incredibly rewarding. And hearing the feedback from our clients
and our veterinarians about the difference in their horses before and
after arriving at the farm is great, too. The horses are truly happier and
healthier. Another is just being around the horses - they are a lot like
dogs, and they each have their own personalities, likes, and dislikes.
They’re truly incredible, intelligent, and most of all, kind animals. In
the next 5 to 10 years, we hope to become the first and foremost
center for equine rehabilitation. After rehabbing my own horse for
the past year, I’ve realized I have a real passion for it. I hope to expand
KET to include more therapies such as: cryotherapy, aqua therapy,
and many others.

BACK ON THE FIELD:
RYAN BETSCHER ’00
From playing on the first CHCA varsity football team to now heading up the CHCA Athletic
Department as the new Athletic Director, Ryan Betscher has come back home to where it all started.
After Ryan graduated from CHCA in 2000 he went on to Trinity International University to play football and
graduated with a Business Management degree. It was there that he met his wife Alli and they were married
in 2004, only three months after graduating. Today, they have four kids – Penny (8 th grade), Jack (5 th grade),
William (2 nd grade), Carter (K) - all currently following in their father’s footsteps and attending CHCA.
For Ryan, sports have always been a passion. When he was young, he played football, basketball and baseball
as well as trying just about everything else. As he got older, he realized how much someone can learn about life
through playing sports. “There are so many life lessons that are taught, like how to work as a team, how to deal
with adversity, and how to respond when the score doesn’t necessarily represent the fight.”
Prior to CHCA, Ryan worked for Athletes in Action – a global sports ministry that is headquartered in Xenia, OH.
He served on the executive team as the executive director of the Sports Complex and Retreat Center. The AIA
ministry operated very similar to an athletic department with 10 sport directors, which has helped Ryan jump
right in to his position and make a nearly seamless transition. Ryan says, “It is great to come back to the place that
helped shape who I am. There were so many people who poured into my life when I was a student and some of
them are still here.”
Reconnecting with past contacts and building new relationships with coaches, colleagues and students keeps
Ryan busy at CHCA, but his real excitement shows when you talk to him about integrating faith into athletics.
“I believe that CHCA is the best place to get a Christ-centered education and I want our athletic experiences
to reflect that as well. We should be so attractive to the outside that it is a no-brainer for any Christian family
to want to send their children to CHCA and compete on our teams. I am excited about helping get us to that
point with all our sports. We have a massive opportunity for more discipleship through sport and building up our
student athletes.”
An interview with
ERIN (TATE) SCHMERR ’02
Photographer
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND
YOUR HISTORY WITH CHCA.
My parents enrolled me in
kindergarten at CHCA the opening
year and I graduated in 2002. My
class was the first to attend CHCA
from Kindergarten through 12th
grade. We were the original “Lifers”.
CHCA has always had a special
place in my heart and I have so
many fond memories of my time
there.
After graduating from CHCA,
I received my BSW at Xavier
University. I currently live in West
Chester with my husband (Daniel)
and 5-year-old daughter, Adela.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED
IN PHOTOGRAPHY?
My dad was a hobbyist nature
photographer. When he passed
away, his old camera sat on
my dresser for about six years,
untouched. I had always wanted
to learn how to shoot but didn’t
know where to start. When my
daughter was about 8 months old
(4.5 years ago), my good friend and
fellow alumni, Alyssa Konermann
’06, took the time to teach me how
to shoot with my dad’s camera.
It’s been a passion ever since. I
started out photographing family
portraits but over time my skill
set has leaned toward editorial
and conceptual portraits. My
friend and I run a group called the
Cincinnati Image Makers. We hold
monthly photography workshops
that have grown our group to over
300 members. This has given me
the opportunity to have plenty
of clients who are interested
in creative portraiture for their
modeling portfolios.
WHERE DO YOUR
PHOTOSHOOTS TAKE
PLACE?
Most of our shoots take place
in Cincinnati or surrounding
cities. I try to be very creative
with locations since I feel like the
location pulls a lot of visual interest
in the photo. I’ll spend hours
researching unique locations for
our shoots. 54
WHAT IS THE BEST THING
ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Photography has helped me
express creativity inside me that
lay dormant for too many years. It
also helped me see and appreciate
beauty all around me. Now
when I’m out and about I notice
beautiful things that I had always
overlooked. It’s always the simple
things. I’ll notice the pretty way the
light comes through the kitchen
window, or the color of the tall grass
on the side of the road. Everything
to me is a potential shoot location!
My absolute favorite part about
my journey so far is all the people
I’ve met along the way. I’ve met so
many creative people outside my
usual circle and they’ve all pushed
me to grow in different ways.
TELL ME ABOUT THE PHOTOS
THAT ARE IN VOGUE – HOW
DID THAT HAPPEN?
Recently, Vogue has allowed people
from all over the world to submit
photos to be considered for their
website. They have limited times
and limited quantities they accept
for review from each potential
photographer. The Vogue Italia
editorial team then will select the
photos they wish to publish on the
site. It’s an amazing opportunity
for someone like me (a mom living
in Ohio) to see some of their work
watermarked with the Vogue label
and on the Vogue website. I always
joke that it’s like the cool kids at
school let me sit at their lunch
table. It’s a great feeling!
ANYTHING EXCITING ON
THE HORIZON YOU CAN
SHARE?
I have a few fun, high fashion
styled shoots coming up. One
shoot will be in the ornate theater
at Memorial Hall in OTR. I’m also
in talks with a local artist/ fashion
designer about photographing their
upcoming museum exhibit. I’m
very excited for both. I also have
an interview coming out soon in a
New York fashion magazine.

ADOPTING WILLIAM
When their original adoption plans fell through due to Covid, Nick
and Lisa quickly learned that they were going to have to surrender
it all to God and simply show up.
“Looking back, I am utterly amazed
how He fit it together as perfectly
as He did.”
- Lisa Dyson ’99 on trusting in the Lord's perfect plan to adopt her son
CONSIDERING INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION
Adoption was not really on my radar until I married my
husband, Nick. He lived in Southeast Asia in early adulthood
and shared how his heart would break for the orphans and
marginalized children he met there. The country would do
its best to help, but it obviously couldn't compare to a loving
family.
After we were married for a couple of years and began to
think about expanding our family, adoption, particularly
international adoption, kept making its way into our
conversation. So much so that we had booked a trip to
Vietnam for March of 2020, intending to soak up as much
of the culture and experiences as we could so we could come
home, pray some more, and see if that was where we needed
to pursue the adoption process.
A CHANGE IN DIRECTION
As we all know too well, everything changed in 2020. Our
trip was canceled, and we found a lot of time on our hands
to devote to our dream of adoption. As we dug into the
process more, our country search expanded, and we found
ourselves drawn to Colombia for various reasons. The more
we explored, the more it felt like the right fit. On Mother's
Day of 2020, we officially entered the Colombia adoption
process with an organization called All God's Children
International.
The process was difficult and tedious but, at the same
time, natural and encouraging. At one point, I realized my
only option was to surrender the process to God to make it
through. As a “planner,” it became overwhelming to try and
control what I had zero control over. God, very lovingly, put
into my head that all we had to do was show up, do our part,
and then hand it over to Him.
THE LORD’S PERFECT PLAN
Looking back, I am utterly amazed how He fit it together as
perfectly as He did. There are hours, upon hours, upon hours
of coursework, paperwork, social work, fingerprints, notaries,
apostilles, government forms, international government
forms, etc, etc, but somehow, God worked it all out perfectly.
This past March of 2022, Nick and I traveled to Colombia
and officially adopted William.
BEING GOOD STEWARDS
Adoption, especially international adoption, is not cheap.
Before starting down the adoption path, Nick and I prayed
about this part of the equation. We already had two
daughters (my stepdaughters) to think about, and we
wanted to be good stewards of our finances. Practically
speaking, when we looked at the finances on paper, it did
not add up. Even so, we both felt this nudge that God was
telling us to leave that portion to Him. We learned quickly
that when you agree to partner with God to do something
He has directed you to do, you will be amazed! While we
definitely made some changes to our daily lives to save for
the process, He came fully and fiercely to make up the rest,
something we could have never dreamed of at the onset of
the process.
THE JOYS OF MOTHERHOOD
There are so many things that I love about being a mom!
I love how much life and laughter William brings to our
family and extended family. I love seeing his curiosity
about everything around him and watching him learn new
things daily. I've always loved watching my husband be an
incredible Dad to his daughters and watching him with
his son is no different. It melts my heart hearing William’s
deep belly-giggles when his Daddy makes silly faces at him
or throws him up in the air. Of course, hearing him say
“mama”, having him spontaneously run up for a hug and
snuggle, and rocking him to bed at night are all very high
on the mommy-heart list.
OUR FAMILY IS OUR FOCUS
One of the most important things for Nick and I as we were
going through the adoption process, and still is essential
for us, is to be on the same team. It may sound cliché, but
it's true! It’s a long process, and it can be testing; there are
definitely discouraging times and many unknowns. Being
on the same team means encouraging each other when
one of us needed it, not holding a grudge when things
were done differently than we personally would have done
them, picking up the bar when the other needed rest, and
keeping God, our marriage, and our family as our focus.
We knew getting into this that it was bigger than us simply
wanting to be parents. We’re all asked to help the helpless
in different ways, and we are beyond grateful and honored
that God asked the Dyson team to answer this call by
adopting our sweet little William.
A NEW PERSPECTIVE:
ALUMNI STILL LEARNING
Meredith Stutz ’12 shares what it was like to travel to Israel with fellow CHCA
alumni and families.
60

Traveling to the Holy Land was a profound, perspectivechanging
experience. Our trip was supposed to happen in June
2020. Understandably, a global pandemic had other ideas. After
two years of delays, moves and pivots, our trip was Israel bound
on June 11, 2022. It was a privilege to travel with my mom, Dr.
Nicholas, CHCA families and fellow alumni. To walk in such holy,
complex and ancient cities and sites helped expand my view
of what it means to be a Christ Follower and respectful Global
Citizen.
Spending time reflecting and adventuring with my fellow alumni
was special because we grew up being taught the same things
about the Bible. However, to choose to be there together as
adults was a different level of being students of life. Dr. Nick led
us well, while also encouraging us to seek out unique adventures
along the way. From riding camels, to boating on the Sea of
Galilee to trekking through an ancient tunnel, we had the time of
our lives. We also shared a humility, curiosity and intentionality
of wanting to lean into our faith. We personally saw what life may
have been like for Jesus. This trip made Him more human and
His life even more profound. My personal highlight was being
baptized, along with so many of my fellow alumni, by Dr. Nick
in the Jordan River. There was an atmosphere of celebration,
dedication and encouragement among each other.
I am thankful for the opportunity to see the Holy Land, connect
more with Christ and share these profound memories with dear
friends and family.
MEET JON ECKERT
“It’s important for CHCA’s Board of Trustees to have varied points of view and to bring expertise
in key areas, such as Christian education. We are so blessed that Jon Eckert, a renowned expert in
Christian education, and CHCA advocate, joins us on the Board this year, and we’re excited to see how
this will expand our overall strategic approach.” – Amy Connor, CHCA Board of Trustees President
I have been in education for 27 years, including 14 years in higher
education, and also time at the U.S. Department of Education. I
completed my doctoral work at Vanderbilt University and support
and study Christian schools and leadership through the Baylor
Center for School Leadership as the Copple Chair for Christians
in School Leadership.
I think CHCA is one of the strongest Christian schools in the
country, and I want to see it flourish.
Dean Nicholas is one of the best heads of school I have ever seen,
and I think the Entrepreneurship program is second to none. My
cousin and CHCA Upper School teacher Teri Parker, is also one of
the best educators I know.
CHCA can truly be a light for Christian education. The families,
students, and educators here make an amazing community of
learners who ground everything in the truth of the gospel.
My wife, Carolyn, and I have three children – Ben (19), Sarah (17), and Grace (14). Ben is a sophomore at Baylor.
We love spending time together as a family. Fun recent fact – my son and I ran with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain
this summer!
WELCOME TO THE CHCA COMMUNITY, JON!
CHCA was featured in the recent release, “Future Ready: Innovative
Missions and Models in Christian Education”, featuring Jon Eckert as
one of the co-authors.
DID YOU KNOW?
“A growing number of Christian schools are responding to adaptive
challenges and missional opportunities by innovating new structural,
financial, and operational models for Christian education.
The research in this book traces the stories of 11 Christian schools
and networks that have engaged in fundamental mindset changes
around what it means for Christian schools to be future-ready.
The stories and strategies shared will inspire leaders to think
innovatively, strategically, and above all, missionally about how
to reach future generations with the love of God through healthy,
thriving Christian schools.”
Praised by leaders in higher education, this book highlights the great
work that CHCA and other innovative schools are doing to forward
Christian education.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees Finance Committee,
I am pleased to report that once again our independent
as graphic representation of revenues and expenses,
which illustrate the financial health of Cincinnati Hills
Christian Academy. The Board of Trustees strives, in
its deliberations and actions, to support and sustain
TOGETHER AS ONE
TO SERVE AND GROW
HIS KINGDOM
Meet CHCA’s New Executive Director for Institutional Advancement,
Joe Cornely!
Six short weeks ago I was blessed to join the Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy family as Executive Director for
Institutional Advancement. I would like to share a little about my experience thus far; how I came to service here, and
my initial thoughts on expanding on the great work already underway.
Prior to joining CHCA, I worked for Mount St. Joseph University in various development roles. I was led to this work
after a 25 plus year career in healthcare sales and marketing, and a feeling that my work in that field, while rewarding,
left a void of purpose and service to God. Coming to CHCA is a continuation of that journey in an environment of
Christ-centered service. I am in awe of the talent, dedication, and kindness of everyone I have encountered. I am
humbled by the examples of His presence in the students, staff, and leadership.
Here at CHCA, Institutional Advancement includes Admissions, Development, and Data Services that support each.
Last year this lean yet mighty team delivered historic results in fundraising and admissions through the expansion of
passion giving and record level matriculation from 8 th to 9 th grade – among many other significant accomplishments.
They also began the integration of a new student information system across all campuses and all services – this is a
huge undertaking being done with incredible skill and agility. We will venture to continue this trajectory, while refining
some of our processes and focus.
We recognize a need to engage our alumni in personal and meaningful ways, expand the depth and breadth of our
development process, and to be more intentional in the use of information to create greater value for the many
audiences we serve. We commit to continuous improvement and invite your involvement. I look forward to seeing
you at sporting events, theater productions, and at upcoming alumni gatherings. Together as One we will continue to
grow His Kingdom.
Sincerely,
JOE CORNELY
Executive Director for Insitutional Advancement
FROM THE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
TOGETHER AS ONE
WE MAKE AN IMPACT
OUR CHCA COMMUNITY CULTIVATES A
HALLMARK OF GENEROSITY.
THE SASSE FAMILY
Noah ’29, Benjamin, Lyla ’30,
Hope ’33, Jen
As we closed out our 2021-22 school year, it was remarkable to see
the collective impact of how our community gave in a “we are all-in”
kind of way! Gifts from our current families, alumni, alumni parents,
grandparents and special friends of our school blessed our community
in a way that leaves a lasting legacy. I love that about what happens
around here. There is consistently a level of excellence achieved in all
that happens within our school. Giving is no exception to that. Our
community gave this past year in a way that was overwhelmingly generous.
Total Giving to what we love at CHCA was $1,165,606, far exceeding
prior years of giving and blessing our students in some incredible ways.
70

OF DEVELOPMENT
As you gave to CHCA, you impacted all areas across our school to be stronger and better, thus enabling more for
our students.
As a parent of three students at CHCA, I see this matched in how our community gives of themselves. Families
here inspire me. CHCA families pray together, CHCA families serve together and give of their time in countless
ways. Our daughter was recently in a musical, as part of our amazing Fine Arts program. Through that experience, a
fellow CHCA mom captured what it’s like to share experiences within our CHCA community perfectly. She had just
finished leading a committee that created the most beautiful props for this musical when she shared with joy, “What
a beautiful display of Together as One to be part of this theatre production.” Our directors led with vision and endless
patience, our parents volunteered in every way imaginable, and our children shone brightly on stage.
Together as One, our community gives in every way to be part of this amazing place we call CHCA. It’s a gift to our
family to be here and a gift for me personally to serve!
THANK YOU,
CHCA COMMUNITY!
JEN SASSE
Giving is at the heart of CHCA and reflects our gratitude for God’s hand on
our school. Our annual spring “30-Hour Challenge” centered around Gratitude
& Giving received overwhelming participation with families praying over our
school for 30 hours, giving to what they love, sharing stories on social media,
and more.
This time was also used as an opportunity to launch a new CHCA Alumni
Scholarship. We deeply appreciate our alumni and we love when they choose
72 to continue their legacy and bring their children to CHCA.

“It’s a powerful thing to see our CHCA community come together for 30 hours of Gratitude and Giving.
We share this moment reflecting with praise all that God does through CHCA and prayerfully seeking
to continue advancing His kingdom through our school and our amazing students. Thank you, CHCA
family, for all the ways you impact CHCA!” - Jen Sasse, Associate Director of Development
Here are some highlights we experienced over the 30 hours:
• Our community came together in prayer. With the opportunity to download a prayer guide,
families prayed and gave praise over our students, faculty, and community for 30 hours.
• We had an overwhelmingly positive response to our Alumni Scholarship announcement. We
are thrilled that so many alumni want to return with their children.
• We collectively exceeded our matching gifts so a huge thank you once again to our
Leadership Challengers. You helped inspire giving and we’re grateful for your generosity.
• Generosity overflowed – from a $50K match gift to the many families and friends who gave
financially to what they love at CHCA, the 30-hour event culminated in an overall blessing of
nearly $110M in gifts to CHCA.
Together as One we make an impact as we
Give to What We Love & strengthen our legacy of generosity at CHCA!
I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. – Psalm 69:30
73

WHEN YOU GIVE TO WHAT
YOU LOVE…
Each year, families so generously give of their time and their resources
to what they love here at CHCA. Here is just a sampling of the impact
you are having on our Robotics students.
“Robotics helps me with my current STEM classes.”
“I’ve learned many skills; three
important ones are managing
resources, teaching others, and how
to diagnose and solve problems.”
“Robotics has better
equipped me to solve
real-world problems.”
“Being a member of the robotics team has taught me the importance of time
management. This lesson has allowed me to effectively use my time to be more
productive in all of my schoolwork.”
74

“I learned how to work better in a team, how
to complete a project from the ground up, and
how to operate important machinery, which
will help me when I join the workforce.”
“Our FRC program has led me to
gain critical thinking skills while
simultaneously teaching me the
importance of hard work and
responsibility to achieve success.”
“I've learned to program,
work with others, and
deliver projects on time.”
“As a member of our robotics team, I have learned to integrate all aspects of robotics
which includes overall game strategy, the engineering design process, computer-aided
design and manufacturing, electrical engineering, and programming.”
Celebration 2022 marked year two of a virtual and different feeling for our annual
fundraiser event… but that did not stop the fun!
Over 355 generous participants made this event a
wonderful success, altogether raising $105,000 to
support CHCA!
Through our faithful sponsors, many generous donations, fabulous raffle baskets of
treasures; the beautiful John Hardy set generously donated by Yelton Fine Jewelers; the
Golden Apple of Gratitude for a lucky teacher/administrator; and of course, the Free
Since CHCA’s earliest days, our engaged
and abundantly generous community has
fueled the mission of CHCA, enabling our
students to flourish academically, spiritually,
and socially. Preparing our students for lives
of kingdom impact and influence, the reach
of CHCA’s mission spans across our city,
throughout the country, and around
the world.
ADVANCING THE MISSION
Step into CHCA and you will discover an
extraordinary, Christ-centered education
unlike any within the city, where our
students have countless opportunities to
CHOOSE MORE. Here they find their place,
pursue their gifts, strengthen their faith,
and make an impact on our world. And the
outcome? Our students realize they can
BE MORE.
