As you would be well aware, some surfers collect wooden surfboards to be adorn their walls, to simply gaze at and admire the workmanship and sheer beauty of the craft while others seek out that ‘traditional feel’, to fully understand what it is like to ride a solid balsa malibu or chambered big wave gun. Then there are those surfers with a heightened eco-consciousness who are looking for more sustainable surfboards than their traditional foam and fibreglass counterparts. This is where the evolution of the wooden surfboard is experiencing a real ‘tree change’ with the advancement of materials and construction techniques. Now, it would be fair to say that surfers in the main have an innate sense of affection for the environment and are conscious of supporting sustainable and eco-friendly means of producing the boards they take to the waves on. The one variable however that can prohibit such support is that this ‘environmental consciousness’ cannot be at the expense of performance. Plainly put, if the boards are made of environmentally friendly products using sustainable practices and they still perform the same as a traditional PU board, they are more than willing to spend their hard-earned. If they don’t compare, many surfers are arguably willing to turn a blind eye to environmental concerns until a viable, eco-friendly equivalent is found. In the ensuing pages we talk with those businesses who are the Top of the Tree, who have found a sweet spot and successfully married performance with sustainability. We also have the great pleasure of taking with legends of the surf industry who are crafting timeless timber masterpieces and those who are bringing the joy of building wooden surfboards to the people.
