A HAPPY STAFF ROOM
As a school which prides itself on the
environment that we create, this year
we have spent extra time thinking about
what it is like to be a Barfield employee
and if we are doing enough to support
our incredible staff body...
Being part of the Prep School’s Trust, there has been a
coordinated effort throughout to think about how we can become
an ‘Employer of Choice’ and this is something we have embraced
here at Barfield. Our new EOC staff committee meets regularly
to discuss the findings from our initial survey, which was open to
all staff and provided an opportunity for honest and constructive
feedback. Being an EOC can cover a multitude of categories, but
our group focuses on the day-to-day - the small things that add
up to make the biggest difference, and we have already noticed
a significant lift in staff morale, engagement and enthusiasm in
school.
Initiatives this term include the introduction of a breakfast trolley
every morning, employing a proofreader to support the report
writing process and buying every member of staff (teaching and
non-teaching) a Barfield winter coat. While we do not claim to be
reinventing the wheel, even just these three changes have lifted
spirits and reinforced the message that we are listening and we
care. Each morning we now have a lovely buzz in the staff room
as they enjoy their breakfast while catching up with colleagues
- report writing season seems to have been lighter and more
manageable - and the response to the coats has been brilliant
(not to mention how smart they look).

continuing our discussions around how
we can make Barfield an even better
place to work. Not everything is about
spending money, even just starting my
weekly staff meeting with a ‘thank you’
roll call ensures that people feel valued,
they receive the recognition they richly
deserve and they then take that positivity
and spread it amongst the children.
