KRIS DREVER :: At Union Chapel, Islington.
Cherished and admired in equal measure by
listeners and fellow musicians, award-winning
guitarist, singer, songwriter and prolific
collaborator Kris Drever has been a leading light
on the UK roots scene for well over a decade. A
highly skilled guitarist who adroitly blends
traditional folk and flat picking with more
contemporary influences – allied to a
distinctively relaxed and poised vocal burr –
Drever is an astonishingly fine interpreter of
others’ songs, with an increasingly frequent
knack for concocting seriously smart lyrical
observations and earworm melodies of his own.
THE HACKLES :: At The Traverse Theatre Bar,
Edinburgh. Hackles are those fine hairs on the
back of our neck that stand up whenever an
emotional response is triggered. Whatever your
personal trigger is, whether sweet vocal
harmonies, lyrics with special resonance or
soulful presentation that raises the goosebumps,
this pair deliver. A new album is in production
and will feature a couple of tracks written by
close friend and long-time Hackles auxiliary
member Halli Anderson of River Whyless.
24 JANUARY
ASHARA :: At Reconnect Regal Theatre,
Bathgate. Ashara, the brainchild of awardwinning
visionary Jason Wilson (Wilson &
Swarbrick), will debut this January by touring
across Scotland, with tracks that feature a mix
of Scottish folk, global roots and reggae. The
tour includes dates in Bathgate, Perth, Ayr,
Greenock and Glasgow (Celtic Connections
Festival). The group, which describe their sound
as where Scotland meets Jamaica in Canada,
features Jason Wilson on vocals, acoustic guitar
and piano, alongside the legendary Jamaican-
Canadian guitarist Carl Harvey (Toots & The
Maytals), and Wilson band members,
saxophonist Marcus Ali, vocalist Laurel Tubman,
drummer Vince Reel and bassist Michael
Shapinko.
27 JANUARY
Summerhall / NEHH presents .....
Destination Bowie :: At Summerhall,
Edinburgh. Destination: Live brings together
some of the country’s most sought-after
professional musicians to celebrate the greatest
icons in popular music. Their brand-new live
show is a blast through nearly five decades of
David Bowie. Destination: Bowie is a fantastic
musical voyage from Space Oddity to Blackstar,
picking up a load of hits and a few surprises
along the way. The band have received huge
acclaim for their unique arrangements of
Bowie’s fabulous back catalogue. Do not miss
the chance to see this remarkable live show!
www.summerhall.co.uk
JW FRANCIS :: At Assai, Edinburgh. NYC’s selfstyled
"lofi jangle dream slacker bedroom pop"
artist is back with his third album ‘Dream House’
and will be touring it in the UK. A laid-back and
loved-up affair, it comprises 12 romantic tracks
he has written on behalf of fans who have
requested a special song for their valentines
(whittled down from over 300 requests!). Expect
blissful melodies, dreamy instrumentation and
JW's trademark laconic vocals. Recommended
for fans of: Mac Demarco, Julian Casablancas, or
Darwin Deez.
www.facebook.com/JWFrancisthatsme
2 FEBRUARY
Summerhall / NEHH presents ..... POSTER
PAINTS & JILL LOREAN :: At Summerhall,
Edinburgh. Jill Lorean is Jill O’Sullivan (Sparrow
and the Workshop) in collaboration with Andy
Monaghan (Frightened Rabbit) and drummer
Peter Kelly. Jill muses on nature, relationships,
love, sorrow, motherhood and memory over
frenetic, hypnotic drum beats and playful,
subversive bass and guitar lines. Poster Paints
are Carla J. Easton and Simon Liddell. Two
beloved Scottish musicians who orbited through
the same thriving music scene, Carla as an
award-winning solo artist and member of
TeenCanteen, and Simon as part of Frightened
Rabbit and Olympic Swimmers, who were
introduced by Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee
of The Vaselines. The pair seemed destined to
collaborate, yet the musical outfit they created
happened purely by chance. The band released
their debut single Number 1 last year; the track
was described as ‘reverb-splattered, riotous
guitar melodies and supercharged vocals with
jangle-pop primacy’ (The Line of Best Fit) and
received extensive play from Marc Riley via BBC
6Music, BBC Introducing and BBC Radio
Scotland. They followed with a surprise release
EP Blood Orange, a brace of headline shows and
support slots with Belle & Sebastian, Admiral
Fallow and Teenage Fanclub.
3 FEBRUARY
Summerhall / NEHH presents ..... JAMES
YORKSTON & NINA PERSSON :: At
Summerhall, Edinburgh. On 13 January, James
Yorkston, Nina Persson and The Second Hand
Orchestra will release The Great White Sea
Eagle, the follow up to James Yorkston and The
Second Hand Orchestra’s The Wide, Wide
River – a Guardian Top 10 Folk Album of 2021.
The record didn’t start life as a follow up; in
early 2021, Yorkston began visiting his studio in
Cellardyke, Fife and for the first time, starting
writing songs on the piano as opposed to his
usual guitar as he gazed upon the sea outside
his window. After sending the first five or six
songs to Karl-Jonas Winqvist (the ringleader/
conductor of TSHO), they began to discuss
working on the music together. With Yorkston’s
shift from guitar to piano, they thought about
what other changes they could make to their
process which led to the involvement of a guest
singer and the legendary Nina Persson (The
Cardigans) was brought into the fold. They
followed the same methodology as The Wide,
Wide River – apart from James, Nina and KJ,
none of The Second Hand Orchestra had heard
the music prior to entering the studio – and the
arrangements were made up on the spot.
Yorkston summarises: “Everyone who was
playing in The Second Hand Orchestra, in their
own way they are all unique and colourful
players. There was no-one there who didn’t
know what to do. I would bring them the songs,
we would start one – I would play it, and second
time round people would start singing and
playing, and by the time we had done it three or
four times we would hit record and we would be
ready to go. And the thing that they all had was
the ability to give each other space and to come
up with their parts based on what other people
were playing naturally was a very quick process,
and they were all so open, nobody was
egotistical. Everything was just happy. I love the
wildness in it.”
BAND :: At Crail Community Hall. Originally
formed in the early 70s by brothers Jim and
John Yardley (both at school with Barbara
Dickson in Dunfermline), the Bully Wee
Band is a folk group with Scottish roots,
which successfully toured Britain, Europe and
America through several line-ups until the
last one of Ian Cutler, Fergus Feely, Colin
Reece and Maartin Allcock finally called it a
day in 1983. They reformed 20 years later
after a chance meeting between Messrs
Cutler, Feely and Reece in a very spirited jam
session at Faversham Folk Club in Kent, and
a subsequent decision to put a three piece
Bully Wee Band back on the road in January
2004. They decided to repeat the experience
the following January, only this time with the
addition of Bully Wee founder member Jim
Yardley. Thus the current line up of Ian
Cutler, Fergus Feely, Colin Reece and Jim
Yardley was complete and reunited. The
Ocean Full of Islands’ is to be released on 24th February 2023. Selling out venues across the UK, their
appearance at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is the culmination of three-days of events and celebrations to
welcome in the New Year.
For younger and family audiences, Edinburgh’s
Sprogmanay returns to the National Museum of Scotland.
This afternoon of fun for children of all ages is free and unticketed and families can drop in to enjoy a
programme of live music, comedy, magic and arts and crafts in addition to the National Museum’s
galleries which are packed with fascinating exhibits. The Sprogmanay Family Ceilidh with the
Edinburgh Ceilidh Club takes place only a short walk from the museum at Assembly Roxy offering a free
afternoon of ceilidh dancing in a fun, relaxed ‘have-a-go’ environment suitable for all levels of
experience. This is a great way to introduce kids to the joys of ceilidh dancing and music.
Full details and booking information for all the events can be found on Edinburgh’s Hogmanay website.
Adamson Singer/songwriter Kirsten summons
the same heart-stopping purity as Sandy Denny,
by way of Emmylou Harris and Kate Bush.
Transcendence runs in the family. Her father
was Stuart Adamson (Skids, Big Country) and
her mother Alexandra, a champion Highland
dancer. With summers spent soaking up the
atmosphere in Nashville with her dad and a
string of leading roles in musical theatre back in
the UK, the teenage Adamson’s course was set.
She sang backing vocals on Big Country’s last
album Driving to Damascus at age 13. By 2010,
she was forging her own career as a vocalist and
keyboard player for indie-folkers Aberfeldy. She
fronted country rockers The Gillyflowers and
more recently shone as half of alt-country duo
The Marriage, and then on a self-titled solo
debut. The austere beauty of her voice has been
a constant motif. In a reflective mood, she’s now
gearing up to release a new solo LP this winter.
