“I love shopping locally,
and The Lighting Design Center at
Warshauer Electric is no exception.
They have a great showroom with
an expansive display of decorative
knowledge about every detail of
lighting. From recessed lighting,
task lighting and all the technical
information about creating a well-lit
room, they are my go-to source for
guaranteed confidence in lighting
presentations with my clients.
For this project, my team and I were
looking for three unique fixtures, and
The Lighting Design Center had
exactly what we needed for this
kitchen. We added Visual Comfort
luminaires, Roark chandeliers by
by Thomas O’Brien, providing the
finishing touches to complete this
project. The end result speaks for
editorinchief | LETTER
Kitchen colors can be an interesting
reflection of the times. From the deep Art Deco colors of
the 1920s and ’30s to the pastels of the 1950s, from the mod shades that washed
ashore in the 1960s to the nearly neon hues of the booming 1970s, kitchen colors
often followed suit. As the busyness of the new tech world took over our lives in
the 2000s, colors started to fade to calming neutrals, a trend that continues today.
Through it all, white has been a constant option for kitchens, thanks to its
association with cleanliness. Without the skill of a designer, however, all-white
kitchens can look sterile and downright boring — and homeowners have started
to notice. All-white kitchens have started to decline in popularity and are
expected to continue to do so this year, according to a new study by the National
Kitchen & Bath Association. White will remain an option, of course, but it will
be paired more often with colorful accents and wood in natural finishes.
Our editorial team found these trends already in play in New Jersey when
selecting projects for this Kitchen Issue. Our cover story features a black and brass
Moorestown kitchen by Bluebell Kitchens and Michelle Plachter Design. (“Double
Vision,” 42). The NKBA study cites this color combination as one to watch.
White gets an infusion of interest with a black, gray and gold wall covering; black and brass range and
faucets; and wood cabinetry with a natural finish in designer Jackie Currie-Taylor’s own Rumson kitchen, based
on one she saw on a trip to France (“Remembrance of Things Past,” 48).
Warm white cabinetry takes on a glow when paired with a walnut island, two glass-front cabinets with walnut
interiors, a black granite backsplash and deep gray vent hood in designer Michele Wesson’s Bergen County
kitchen, which she transformed with help from Valerie Corsaro of Ridgewood Kitchens (“View Points,” 52).
Designer Alison Nifoussi mixed bright white cabinetry with a black island and a black vent hood with brass
trim when updating a 1990s Morganville kitchen. The adjacent bar/beverage area features soft beige cabinetry
and a backsplash of black tile (“Quest for Contrast,” 56). In Wyckoff, Yana Bouchkanets combined white
cabinets with a white oak island as well as brass and black accents when replacing a 1960s kitchen sporting pink
and green highlights (“Aligned with the Times,” 60).
Each kitchen design involves far more than color, of course, so be sure to read the behind-the-scenes stories
for more details.
Also in this issue, we’re pleased to showcase the Bergen County home of Paul Connell and Dolores Catania, a
cast member of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Vanessa Deleon created a sophisticated contemporary home
for the high-profile couple (“Savvy Style,” 34). And as the winter winds blow, dream about summer at the Brant
Beach vacation home of architects Stacey Ruhle Kliesch and Gary Kliesch (“On the Waterfront,” 24).
With the bustle of the holidays behind us, we hope you will take time to relax and be inspired to add some
color and style to your rooms with ideas presented throughout this issue.
Attention-Getting Legs
The PK61 coffee table looks as fresh today as it did when introduced 67 years ago
BY REN MILLER
The little black dress. The fragrance
of a favorite flower. Children at
play. Each one is simple in its
own way yet captivating. The same might be
said of some furniture designs, including the
PK61 coffee table.
Noted Danish designer Poul Kjærholm
(1929-1980) introduced the coffee table in
1956 after training as a cabinetmaker and then
continuing his education at what is now the
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School
of Design, in Copenhagen. It was at the Royal
Academy that Kjærholm’s transformation into
a noteworthy furniture architect began.
After graduating from the academy in 1952,
he went on to design furniture noted for its
understated elegance and the highest level of
craftsmanship. He had a particular interest in
construction materials, especially steel, which
he felt deserved the artistic respect that was
commonly awarded to wood.
That belief sprang to life in many of his
creations, and notably so in the PK61 coffee
table. The elements of the table are simple
and common: four legs form a frame that
supports a removable square top. But how he
interpreted those elements was, in a word, captivating. He made the legs
of steel and moved them from the corners to the sides of the table, lending
an air of movement and making them as important to the design as the
top. For the top itself, he specified stone or glass at a time when most
other designers still chose wood. The resulting design reflects Kjærholm’s
devotion to pure forms and materials.
……
The year before designing PK61, Kjærholm initiated a collaboration
with furniture manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen that continued for
the rest of his life — the two families remain close even today. But two
years after Kjærholm’s death, his trustees entrusted Fritz Hansen with the
production and sale of the designs he had developed from 1951 to 1967.
Fritz Hansen, a global leader in furniture, lighting and accessory design
and production, introduced a collection of furniture by several Danish
designers to celebrate its own 150th anniversary last year.
The collection includes an anniversary version of the PK61 with a top
crafted of a sparkling marble sourced in Norway near the Arctic Circle.
The marble, millions of years old, is gray-white with mineral flecks,
A glistening marble discovered near the Arctic Circle adds a new spin to the PK61 coffee table.
rippled veining and a tumbled finish. The base is satin-brushed stainless
steel. The anniversary coffee table retails for $6,244. Earlier versions are
available with tops of slate, marble, granite or glass. The PK61 measures
31.5 inches wide and deep and 12.6 inches high.
A larger version of the coffee table (PK61A) measures 47.2 inches
Stacey Ruhle Kliesch and Gary Kliesch hadn’t planned on buying
their Brant Beach home, which they’ve since dubbed “The Kove.”
But once Stacey, owner of Stacey Ruhle Kliesch, Architect LLC, in
Ridgewood, and Gary, principal of GK+A Architects, PC, in Rutherford,
owned the property on the Barnegat Bay, they were eager to transform it
into their ideal shore residence. “We made this purchase on a lucky whim,”
Stacey says. “We were enthusiastic about the wonderful possibilities.”
DNJ: What was your vision for this home?
STACEY RUHLE KLIESCH: As two architects, we wanted to go outside
of the typical design you see on the Jersey Shore. We decided to
incorporate some principles of modern design. We used clean lines,
linear masses with little ornamentation, interesting roofl ines and
asymmetry. We maximized natural light with large windows and
incorporated innovative and eco-friendly building materials, open floor
BEFORE
“The windows are a combination of storefront, casement, motorized, folding window walls and bands of
clerestory,” Gary Kliesch says. “The window geometry, size and locations were chosen to maximize views,
enhance indoor/outdoor living opportunities, provide cross ventilation, add some geometric rhythm to the
façade design and provide privacy.”
The Klieschs revamped the existing structure on the property. Stacey Ruhle Kliesch explains: “We brought the
original house down to the ground-level garage, keeping just the west façade. We reused the existing piles,
which already met the proper height for current coastal design requirements. We enlarged the footprint to the
north and east, transforming the two-bedroom, 2½-bathroom home into six bedrooms and 5½ bathrooms.”

plans, integration of interior and exterior spaces, and energy-efficiency.
DNJ: What aspects of the home are energy efficient?
GARY KLIESCH: We installed new energy-conserving windows. We also
increased the thickness of the walls and filled them with spray foam and
batt insulation to improve the home’s performance. We developed the
façade with a rain-screen system, allowing the heat gain from the siding
to be exhausted out. In addition, we designed large overhangs to shade
the house and keep it cooler. The floor plans incorporate cross-ventilation
patterns to allow cooling bay breezes to pass through the house. The
boiler and air conditioning systems were both specified for their higher
energy efficiency.
DNJ: What was the goal for the exterior aesthetic?
SRK: We used a variety of building materials to create interest and rhythm
on the exterior façade. The cement fiberboard on the ground level is
resistant to damage from creatures and weather. The rough-sawn, cypresslap
siding is durable in wet climates, weathers naturally and provides a
soft visual contrast to the adjacent metal panels. Those metal panels are
corten steel, which patinas quickly, providing corrosion resistance that
can last from a few decades to over 100 years. We love the look and the
easy maintenance of these materials.
“This was our first project where the primary living space was raised 10 feet above the
ground,” Gary says. “Developing a relationship between the ground activities and the
main living floor was important to us. We addressed this issue by creating a series of
linked spaces for socializing — from the great room to the deck to the fire pit, outdoor
dining, outdoor lounge, bar and patio.”
DNJ: Did the project present any challenges? How did you address them?
GK: The greatest challenge was the irregular, semi-trapezoidal site. With all
the lovely water access comes the side effect of having extensive bulkheads.
Once we accounted for the required setbacks, the house was nearly a
stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
Bold orange cabinetry adds spice to the flat planes of the kitchen. “The entire kitchen utilizes a single size and shape cabinet door, rotated as necessary, to keep the
design simple and sleek,” Stacey says. “Mother-of-pearl wall tiles look fresh and glitter like fish scales. The white concrete counters, embedded with seashells, were
handcrafted by us with our daughters. The floors are coral limestone tile. The accordion bayfront windows open to an outside breakfast bar. Adjacent doors open to
a deck for easy entertaining.” Pendants above the island were reclaimed from a restaurant remodeled by Gary, who also made the table and the chandelier above it.
triangle in plan. We had to be strategic in working within those tight
dimensional limitations. To save time and money, and to be less disruptive
to our community, we didn’t apply for any variances. Instead, we used
creative solutions to maximize the function of the available space. The
floor plans show the careful interlocking of spaces to provide for excellent
views, cross ventilation and efficient function in a small footprint.
DNJ: What was involved in the interior space planning?
SRK: The overall design has zones that allow different family members
to use the house at the same time with some separation and privacy. The
main living floor has an open-plan great room, dining room, kitchen
and deck where family and guests can socialize, with an adjacent powder
room and guest suite. This layout allows the main floor to be used
independently if the rest of the house is shut down in the off season. It
also provides guests with a private retreat away from the family. In the
future, we see the possibility of moving into this bedroom suite full time
and living on one floor.
The second floor is designed like four ship cabins for our two daughters.
Because we had a limited footprint and wanted to maximize the use
of space, we designed the bedrooms to be relatively small and simple,
reducing visual distraction so attention is drawn to the changing scenes
outside. It also encourages the girls to leave their rooms and congregate
in the public spaces. They each have a view of the bay, full bathroom and
walk-in closet, which will hopefully grow with them into adulthood with
28 February/March 2023

The great room features floor-to-ceiling windows. “Nearly every direction affords magnificent views of the bay,” Gary says. “The proximity to the bulkhead and
elevated floor plate creates the illusion of looking out onto the water from the lounge of a cruise ship instead of a stationary living room.” The southern-facing wall is
a folding partition so the indoor sitting area and the deck can become one continuous space.
their partners. Across the hall, they each have a second bedroom that
currently allows them space for visiting friends and, in the future, perhaps
for their own children.
This home has been a passion project for us and, since its completion in
2019, has been our greatest respite, especially during the pandemic. We
envision a long future here together. DNJ
DESIGNER VANESSA DELEON
CREATES A SOPHISTICATED
NEST FOR A HIGH-PROFILE PAIR
Dolores Catania and Paul Connell’s Bergen
County residence was newly built. Still Catania,
a cast member on The Real Housewives of New
Jersey, and Connell, president and CEO of
Manhattan-based Eco Electrical Services LLC, wanted to
infuse it with their own aesthetic. “They’re very particular,”
designer Vanessa Deleon says. “They wanted to refresh the
spaces and tailor them to their liking.”
Deleon, a television staple herself on programs such as
American Dream Builders and Restaurant Impossible as well
as a brand ambassador with Overstock.com, is principal
designer at New York City-based Vanessa Deleon Associates.
She describes her clients’ design preferences: “They wanted
classic elements to reflect their traditional tastes. However,
this is a modern townhouse. We didn’t want to stray from
that aesthetic too much.”
The designer merged the two styles to create an elevated
urban aesthetic that both celebrates the owners’ preferences
and honors the contemporary bones of the home. “We
made a cohesive synergy happen with the finishes and the
architecture,” says Deleon, an allied member of the American
Society of Interior Designers.
In the living room, the finishes and architecture meet in
a wall treatment that reaches from the fireplace mantel to
the 16-foot-high ceiling. “We considered marble or stone
In the living room, deep gray walls and plush seating
bring coziness to the 16-foot-high space.
34 February/March 2023

LIVING ROOM | “It’s a very monochromatic theme throughout the entire home,”
designer Vanessa Deleon notes. In the living room, deep grays and blacks are softened
with white accents.
DINING ROOM | Blue accents add a pop of bright color.
CIGAR ROOM | Four wide velvet chairs have dramatically tufted exteriors. “The
homeowners like a lot of texture,” Deleon notes.
cladding but everything felt too hard,” the designer says. Instead, they
opted for the faux leather installation. “We hit the nail on the head,”
she says of the tall expanse of “quilted” squares rising in uniform rows
above the fireplace. The ceiling itself features its own geometrics in the
form of L-shaped insets that are lighted from within for added drama.
The effect is repeated in the primary bedroom, this time with
upholstered wall panels behind the bed. “The clients wanted more than
a headboard,” Deleon explains. “They wanted it to speak to the room, to
be very prominent.” The deep gray treatment is, indeed, a focal point. The
tone is reinforced throughout the space with the inclusion of tactile textiles
in shades of white and gray — from the quilted bedding to the faux-fur
throw to the hand-tufted rug over the chevron-patterned hardwood floors.
Textured furnishings such as these add depth and richness to the
primarily gray-and-white palette. Textural features in the living room
include a sofa with deep quilting topped with velvet and faux fur throw
pillows. The dining room chairs — which depart from the monochromatic
36 February/March 2023

look with vibrant blue linen upholstery — have button tufting that brings
a tailored touch to the contemporary setting. Similarly, four armchairs
make a striking addition to the cigar room. Their distinct upholstered
exteriors catch the eye and their wide velvet seats ensure cozy conversation.
The kitchen, striking in its own right, is a sleek showcase of metal and
glass. The clients entertain often, hiring chefs to cook for guests. And this
kitchen is a chef’s dream with its long, marble-topped island flanked by
stainless steel cabinetry. The room’s crowning glory is the range hood —
also stainless steel — that descends from the ceiling above the island.
“The kitchen is very modern,” Deleon says. “It was the builder’s choice
and it’s one room we fell in love with and decided to keep. It hits the
mark with a beautiful combination of metals and marble. It represents
the clients’ style.”
While Catania and Connell loved the kitchen as is, they asked Deleon
for one addition: a wine wall. The installation — featuring floor-toceiling
columns of wine bottles against a mirrored background in the
dining area — creates a dramatic backdrop for meals.
Catania and Connell, Deleon explains, are very knowledgeable
clients. “They have specific tastes. They know what’s hot, what’s new,
what’s next. It was all about how we put these things together that made
them happy.” DNJ
Two islands (opposite, top) in dramatic juxtaposition are
tied together by cushioned bar stools and fashionable
floating chandeliers. Incorporating a bronzed mirror
backsplash behind the cooktop “creates some reflection”
and breaks up an expanse of black cabinetry, interior
designer Michele Plachter says. Glass and metal doors
lead to the mudroom and garage; coordinating tall slab
doors on each side contain pantry storage.
The inset 36-inch Wolf gas cooktop (opposite, bottom
left) “is virtually invisible unless you’re standing right in
front of it,” kitichen designer Lori Kurnitsky says. The pizza
oven wall is reflected in the mirrored backsplash above it.
Black-stained oak veneer doors adjacent to the ovens fold
back (opposite, bottom right) to reveal a hidden pantry
tucked into the space behind the cooking units.
“The owners loved the idea of a personal pizzeria (right)
where a group can congregate out of the way from the
main kitchen, Kurnitsky says. The pizza oven is set flush
into a vertical façade of natural Belvedere quartzite. This
secondary island — covered in quartz — houses a sink,
icemaker and refrigerator drawers.
The existing kitchen in Gina and Glenn Bennett’s home
in Moorestown proved that big isn’t always better. The
sprawling but inefficient layout created an impractical
distance between workstations and storage. Adding to the
conundrum were angled, rather than square, “corners” that limited the
options for appliance and fixture placement.
“The homeowner, who enjoys cooking for friends and family, found
she was running all over to pull a meal together,” says kitchen designer
Lori Kurnitsky of Bluebell Kitchens (BBK) in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
Moreover, it was dated and not at all in line with her tastes.
Kurnitsky and BBK associate designer Olga Carlson joined forces with
the team from Philadelphia-based Michele Plachter Design to achieve
the homeowner’s vision of a more modern, edgy aesthetic in the kitchen.
Space challenges were addressed by making the most of the abundant
square footage and working all the angles to the room’s advantage.
To accommodate both large and small entertaining and casual family
meals, “We practically made two kitchens” Kurnitsky says. The areas are
seamless in style but can function independently with improved access to
appliances and storage features.
Textured, wire-brushed alder cabinets finished in a midnight stain
“exude the moody vibe the clients wanted,” designer Michele Plachter
says, and yet are very inviting. Two islands designate the different activity
zones: the main kitchen as well as a personal pizzeria zone where a group
can congregate away from the primary cooking area. “The wowza moment
is the pizza oven wall,” featuring a beautiful slab of
Belvedere leathered quartzite, Plachter explains. “It’s
a stunner.”
The L-shaped island and its intricate waterfall
edges may be one of Kurnitsky’s favorite details
because it took a lot of careful planning and crafting
to get it right. “The material of the raised section
is a natural stone — the same amazing quartzite
as the pizza oven wall,” she says. “It’s spectacular
alongside the quartz that tops the rest of the island”
and perimeter countertops.
Similar care went into creating the contemporary
range hood, with its eye-catching brass “cuff” that
echoes the finishes in the cabinetry and lighting,
Kurnitsky says. The hood’s horizontal slat detail also
ties in with the horizontal integrated black channel
pulls on the perimeter base cabinetry.
Flush-mount appliances, a paneled Sub-Zero
refrigerator/freezer and a walk-in pantry contribute
to the kitchen’s desired clean-lined aesthetic.
Other accents — such as handmade leather cabinet
pulls — “lend an organic softness to the space,”
Plachter says. “It’s the details that elevate the
design,” she adds, from the floating chandeliers that
ground both islands to the use of wall covering and
art. “Lighting is so critical in our projects to ensure
the space ‘shines’ the way it was intended.” DNJ
Remembrance of
A VACATION ABROAD WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR A BRITISH DESIGNER IN HER
Atrip to France was the inspiration for
Jackie Currie-Taylor’s new kitchen. Currie-
Taylor, an allied member of the American
Society of Interior Designers and owner and principal
designer of Red Bank-based Gravitate To Interior
Design, was inspired by a home her family had rented
in Aix-en-Provence in 2018. “I loved the kitchen in that
house,” she says. “It was a mixture of old and new — the
French are experts in mixing classic and modern — and
there was something about the function of the space that
really spoke to me. That kitchen stayed with me, and
when I came to designing this kitchen, I wanted to evoke
the same feeling and look.”
The British-born designer admired the abundant
storage options in the French home. “I loved opening the
oak floor-to-ceiling cupboards with all the dinner ware
(everyday and entertaining pieces) easily accessible.” In
addition, she appreciated the way those options were
laid out. “I realized there were no awkward gaps and
no unused corners. And the kitchen also had a walk-in
pantry. What’s not to like about that?”
The kitchen in her new home features not only a walkin
pantry, but also ample storage that includes floor-toceiling
cupboards on one wall along with an integrated
Flooring in the kitchen — and throughout the home — is
engineered French oak. “Engineered wood flooring is a better choice
in high-moisture environments,” designer and homeowner Jackie
Currie-Taylor says. The beam edging the range hood is made from
reclaimed wood salvaged from the original home on the property.
The paneled refrigerator/freezer
integrates into the floor-to-ceiling
cabinetry. “The ceiling pendants over
the island add a touch of whimsy and
make me smile,” Currie-Taylor says.

BUTLER’S PANTRY ENTRY | Custom black French pocket
doors open to the butler’s pantry. The 100-year-old chair
was salvaged from an English church where Currie-Taylor’s
grandfather served as a verger.
BUTLER’S PANTRY | The butler’s pantry is a useful prep kitchen
when Currie-Taylor entertains. It includes a dual-temperature
wine fridge, beverage drawer, ice maker and additional
dishwasher for glassware. “The custom bar shelving is nearly
as popular as the breakfast cupboard,” Currie-Taylor says.
The ceiling pendant is a smaller version of the kitchen island
pendants, and the wall covering is the same as in the kitchen.
“One of my favorite elements is the large round window
that frames the water views. You can stand at the bar sink
watching osprey, egrets and the ever-changing waterscape.”
LET’S BUILD A HOME
side-by-side refrigerator/freezer for a cohesive look.
“The white oak cabinetry gives order to the kitchen
with food, pots and pans, and small appliances
behind closed doors.”
On the opposite wall, next to the range, Currie-
Taylor installed additional cabinetry that she refers
to as “the breakfast cupboard.” It holds coffee
and tea and the associated hot-beverage-making
appliances. “It’s truly the heart of the kitchen. It’s
where every day begins.” The cabinet is strategically
located directly across from the island sink. “Being
British, we survive on copious amounts of tea,” the
designer says. “So an instant hot tap was a necessity.”
Currie-Taylor paired state-of-the art appliances,
such as the hot faucet and the handmade ILVE
Majestic II range, with more rustic components.
“The range, flanked by the two black windows,
became the focal point of the kitchen. It was the
perfect place to incorporate one of the oak beams
we salvaged from the original 1908 cottage that was
on this property.”
The blend of classic and contemporary continues
with furnishings chosen to represent old and new,
Currie-Taylor explains. “We incorporated modern
leather counter stools as well as a 100-year-old
antique altar chair salvaged over 25 years ago from
the church in England where my great grandfather
was a verger.” Much like that idyllic space in Aix-en-
Provence, Currie-Taylor’s kitchen evokes the past
while enriching the present. “We don’t just use the
kitchen; we practically live in it!” DNJ
A RECONFIGURED KITCHEN
IN BERGEN COUNTY
RESULTS IN BEAUTIFUL
VIGNETTES AND
IMPROVED WORKFLOW
Michele and Michael Wesson fell
in love with a Bergen County
townhome when they were looking to downsize.
But they knew the home was due for an update,
including the long, narrow kitchen with its dated
cabinetry and an awkwardly divided layout. Michele
Wesson, owner of Boucher Interiors in Ridgewood,
wanted to make the 23-by-12-foot kitchen more
attractive and usable, and she knew she wanted to
work with Valerie Corsaro of Ridgewood Kitchens
LLC in Tenafly to accomplish those goals.
First came the layout. “Val came up with the
idea of eliminating a wall of cabinetry and a hall
closet to allow room for a substantial island,”
Wesson recalls. The cooktop that had been
on that wall was moved to the opposite side of
the kitchen, and the sink, also on the wall, was
relocated to the new island.
“Originally, when you walked into the kitchen,
the first thing you saw was a bunch of cabinets
with no symmetry and nothing interesting to look
at,” Corsaro explains. By flipping the kitchen, I
Eliminating the cabinetry along one wall of the narrow
kitchen allowed space for a large walnut island with a
marble top. Appliances were gathered on this opposite
wall, which features leathered Absolute Black granite on the
counter and behind the cooktop. Upper cabinets with glass
doors have LED lighting that highlights the walnut interiors.
One of the designer/homeowner’s favorite wallpaper
companies, Galbraith and Paul, created the designs in the
kitchen and the cozy dining area.
then had a long run that I could work with, so I centered the island and
created an exciting vignette visible upon entering the space.”
To create the warm, transitional look that Wesson wanted, Corsaro
designed inset cabinetry painted in “Shaded White” by Farrow & Ball.
One of the kitchen’s new standout features: glass-front cabinets on both
sides of the cooktop workspace that rise from the countertop to the
ceiling. The cabinets feature walnut interiors with LED lights channeled
inside the frame. “They are on dimmers,” Wesson says, “and the way they
light the cabinets is fantastic!”
The perimeter countertop and the backsplash behind the cooktop are
honed Absolute Black granite with a leathered finish. The backsplash
ends with a shelf of the same material to hold cooking oils and salt and
pepper mills. Decorative painter Cindy Booth finished the vent hood
and the wall above the backsplash with a deep gray paint that has flecks
of metal for a slight reflective quality. Elsewhere in the kitchen, walls are
papered in a subtle print.
The island base is walnut and the countertop is honed Silver Root
marble. The ends of the island have stacked drawers on the front and
back sides that give the impression of legs. These not only create extra
storage but also act as a strong base for the heavy countertop and provide
another opportunity for hardware. “I mixed the metals in the hardware,”
Wesson notes. “I’m always encouraging clients not to worry about
everything matching. Here we have antiqued brass, bronze and nickel,
and they work well together. They add depth and interest.” The stools
have cushions upholstered in faux shearling.
In a corner between two doorways, new cabinetry more than makes
54 February/March 2023

New cabinetry in one corner of
the kitchen and ample storage
in the island more than make
up for the elimination of a wall
of cabinetry in the reconfigured
kitchen. The refrigerator/freezer
hides behind panels to the left
of the glass-front cabinetry in
this photo.
A walnut bar is a convenient
spot to prepare drinks and also
creates an attractive vignette at
the end of a hallway leading to
the kitchen.
up for storage lost elsewhere in the transformation and also serves as
a convenient coffee station. Just beyond one of the doorways — in a
hallway between the kitchen and a den — is a bar crafted of the same
walnut as the island.
On the window wall, the designers framed the eating area so it became
its own space. “Delineating that space helped to shorten the long room,”
Wesson says. “This separation allowed us to change pace there. We chose a
different wallpaper [than the one in the kitchen] and tried to create a space
that would beckon you from the kitchen to come in and eat.”
“Val was the heart and soul of the project,” Wesson says of Corsaro.
“Her design was the jumping off point for every other decision. What I
love about working with her is that she always thinks outside of the box.
Anyone can reproduce a typical kitchen. She is always looking for a way
to make it fresh. If you have a challenge, as I did with the narrow space,
she will not rest until she finds a way around it.” DNJ
Quest for Contrast
The off-black-painted island mimics
the color of wrought iron, a tone
that’s picked up in the textured range
hood, pendants and rustic-style
hardware, designer Alison Nifoussi
says. The countertops and backsplash
are covered in polished marble-like
quartz for a clean, cohesive feel.
A TONAL RANGE OF
FINISHES AND MATERIALS
FORMS A SEAMLESS
COMPOSITION IN A KITCHEN
DESIGNED FOR MODERN
FAMILY LIVING
In Morganville, a young couple with two
children found their dated 1990s kitchen
with no center island ripe for a remodel, recalls
interior designer Alison Nifoussi, principal of
Tweak Interiors in Little Silver.
“The client wanted a functional, high-end
designer look that was modern but still warm
and inviting,” Nifoussi says. She was tasked with
revamping the kitchen and other spaces in the
center-hall traditional home. In the kitchen,
plans called for reconfiguring the walls to “square
off the space” and make room for a 48-inch
refrigerator, walk-in pantry (not shown), center
island and more.
While the preference was for white-painted
cabinetry in the cooking area, “they were also
excited by the idea of adding high contrast,”
Nifoussi says. Painting the base of the island in
The stylish bar area doubles as a coffee/tea station.
It houses a convenient bar sink, microwave and easyaccess
beverage refrigerator for the kids. Three walnut
display shelves tie in with other warm wood accents.
The modern chandelier’s white glass globes “are
reminiscent of a bubbly cocktail,” Nifoussi says.
an “off black” shade did just that. So did the custom range hood with
its slight sweep design and combination of patinas: a blackened body
accentuated with grommeted brass straps.
Polished Calacatta quartz covers the countertops and backsplash. “The
clients were set on having man-made quartz that they wouldn’t have to
stress over or maintain,” Nifoussi says. “We decided to wrap it up the
backsplash for a clean and seamless look that acts as a backdrop to the
statement hood.”
Reeded-glass upper cabinets “add reflection and provide a visual break
from the closed storage,” she adds. The objective “was to take transitional
inset Shaker-style cabinets and make them appear more modern.”
In the adjacent high-drama bar/beverage area, which also doubles
as a coffee/tea station, reeded glass reappears in the upper and lower
cabinets, which were painted in a “soft whisper of beige,” the designer
says. The backsplash, composed of handmade black undulated tile, is
“sexy, moody and perfect for cocktail hour,” she explains. Not only does
the tile offer high contrast to the rest of the light and bright kitchen, “it
has fluidity and movement, which reminds me of liquid in a cocktail.”
Lighting choices reflect the designer’s love of jewelry-like details.
“Statement sculptural lighting over the island and dining table are strikingly
different, but their push and pull tie the whole space together.” DNJ
Yana Bouchkanets’ clients had found their “forever” home on
a beautiful, tree-lined street in Wyckoff. The Midcentury residence
had great potential, but its kitchen seemed to be frozen
in time — a 1960s blast from the past complete with a pink sink and
laminate countertops edged in metal.
Bouchkanets, principal designer at MIF Design in Ridgewood, began
by relocating the kitchen from the right side of the home to the center —
to a space that was formerly the dining room — and adding large windows
and a French door to bring in natural light. “We made sure the
new kitchen would be open to both the new dining room and the family
room — that was at the top of the family’s wish list.” Also on the list: an
oversized island to gather around. “When you have the space, I say go as
big as possible,” the designer says. In this case, Bouchkanets opted for a
custom 11-foot island in white oak topped by a quartz countertop with
On both sides of the range hood, handmade ceramic bricks add subtle texture. The
light oak trim on the range hood coordinates with the island cabinetry and the open
shelves on the opposite side of the room.
The butler’s pantry is outfitted with the same cabinets as those in the
kitchen. The backsplash is made from zellige tile, a traditional Moroccan tile
handcrafted with non-refined natural clay.
a waterfall edge. “It makes a statement. At the same time, it’s durable and
can withstand daily use.”
Another major presence in the room is the range hood. “We designed
it and had it built on site to achieve the perfect scale,” Bouchkanets
notes. The white hood stands out, even against the similarly hued backsplash,
thanks to a light oak edge that provides a contrast. That trim
coordinates with the island cabinetry and open shelving on the opposite
wall to provide a cohesive look.
The space is accessorized with black and brass accents in the cabinet
hardware, light fixtures and faucets. “Don’t be afraid to mix materials!”
Bouchkanets urges. Indeed, the pops of varied metals alongside the light
oak and white elements add just the right amount of shimmer to the
otherwise understated space. “All the materials feel balanced to create a
space that feels beautiful and airy,” the designer says.
The new kitchen is sleek and clean yet warm and welcoming. “The
kitchen is our favorite space to design. It’s the heart of the home,” she says.
“It’s the place where I imagine our clients spending most of their time.
It’s no longer just a place for cooking but also for living. We’re so happy
with how this space turned out and thankful for the family in trusting us
to create this amazing kitchen.” DNJ
