Welcome to
MADISON, NJ
M
adison invites you to experience
all it has to offer!
Home to a thriving retail/commercial
district that runs the
length of Main Street (Route 124), Madison
features car dealerships and grocery
stores to the east and quaint local shops
and restaurants downtown. The Madison
Downtown Development Commission
and the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce
support the district. The Madison
Civic Commercial Historic District, which
includes much of downtown, Borough Hall
and the train station, is on the State Register
of Historic Places.
Top-ranked jazz club Shanghai Jazz is in
Madison, as well as the renowned Shakespeare
Theatre of New Jersey and the Museum of
Early Trades & Crafts—you will be amazed by
the diverse cultural offerings. Multicultural
and delicious, Madison has more than 50 food
establishments within four square miles. The
borough also offers a full calendar of community
events, including a seasonal farmers
market, festivals and parades. Parking is free
on our streets and in municipal shoppers’ lots,
and bicycle racks abound.
Just to the west of the town center is the
picturesque, wooded campus of Drew University.
Farther north lies the Florham campus
of Fairleigh Dickinson University, bridging
the towns of Florham Park and Madison. Less
than a mile farther west lies the Saint Elizabeth
University campus in Convent Station.
Ranked as the number 1 town to live in by
New Jersey Monthly’s Top Towns survey in
2019, Madison continues to flourish. The low
crime rate, reasonable property taxes, excellent
schools and consistently rising home values
helped drive this ranking and make it one of the
most desirable communities in New Jersey.
There is so much to do and see here. Spend
a day, a weekend or—better yet—a lifetime!
Madison has plenty of opportunities
to view great works of art, but it is also
a place where residents and visitors
can MAKE CREATIONS of their own.
Check out one of these spots for a day of—
or a new found passion for—creativity.
15
MUD CLAY STUDIO
“Our clay studio is more than a place to make mugs,” says Mud Clay Studio owner
Melanie Tomaszewski. Newbies and experienced artists alike can try hand building,
the wheel, and the Nerikomi technique—which creates unique patterns by stacking
and cutting colorful clay—leaving with projects such as plates, teapots and tiles.
Multi-week classes are available for children, teens and adults, as are one-time sessions,
which are great for a date night, an evening with friends or a birthday party.
For people who aren’t sure if they should give creativity a try, Tomaszewski suggests
taking a breath. “I have always known what clay has done for me. Turns out
it’s a mutual experience for all humans who don’t mind failing in a couple of things
in order to succeed at other things,” she says. “The growth is the journey.”
There’s an entry point for everyone. Tomaszewski says, “All of our instructors
teach very similar techniques geared toward the success of beginners. Many other
studios show you how to do it and then say, ‘Feel the clay.’ That’s not us.” She
adds, “The possibilities are endless and the community is priceless.”
Bottle Hill Day
Madison’s SIGNATURE EVENT
is better than ever!
First established in 1974 by
Mayor Elizabeth Baumgartner
to promote the downtown business
district, Bottle Hill Day
now draws between 10,000 and
20,000 people from Madison
and other towns in New Jersey
to the heart of the borough every
fall. This year’s Bottle Hill Day is
scheduled to take place on
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7.
There is something for every
kind of New Jerseyan at Bottle
Hill Day. The event, which goes
on rain or shine, features a notto-be-missed
music festival, a
beer garden, amusement areas
that children (and kids at heart)
will adore, and more than 225
vendors selling everything from
jewelry to crafts to clothing.
The music festival—organized
by the Madison Arts & Cultural
Alliance—is a favorite for
music lovers of all ages. Showcasing
local talent, the fest features
performers on various stages
throughout the day. Seating is
available at most of the stages.
As for food and drink, there
is plenty of it. A food court on
Cook Avenue and a food truck
court on Kings Road keep eventgoers
satisfied all day. The DDC
Beer Garden is a must-visit stop
for brew lovers, located on Kings
Road between Maple Avenue and
Prospect Street.
Classic-car fans get a real treat
at the Madison Car Show, a
favorite event every year. Hosted
by the Madison Chamber of
Commerce and Madison PBA
#92, it features antiques, classics,
customs and hot rods in the
Ambulance Corps lot on Kings
Road. Awards are doled out in the
afternoon.
The Museum of Early Trades
& Crafts, meanwhile, is offering
free admission and activities
all day between 10 am and 4 pm,
including historic demonstrations
on the front lawn, crafts
for kids across the street at the
Education Annex, and scavenger
hunts.
Throughout Bottle Hill Day,
family activities and rides—
plus a lot of happy kids—can be
found at two primary amusement
areas, the Central Avenue
School and Kings Road.
More activities can be found
at Dodger Drive on Green Village
Road.
12 Experience MADISON 2023

So why is it called Bottle Hill Day?
The name dates back to the 1715 establishment
of the humble village of Bottle
Hill, in what is now the bustling borough
of Madison—which received its current
name in 1834, when residents thought
the name Bottle Hill was too rustic. They
chose Madison after James Madison, the
fourth president of the United States and
the namesake of the local private school,
Madison Academy.
These days, Bottle Hill Day represents
a family-friendly community celebration
presented by the Madison Downtown
Development Commission. However, it is
an easy and fun history lesson to remember
Madison’s roots by visiting the Bottle Hill
Historic District of Madison any time.
The best part of Bottle Hill Day?
All activities are free and open to the
public. The event offers a great chance for
Madison residents to get out and mingle
with neighbors, and for Jerseyans in nearby
towns to experience the Madison spirit.
MUSEUM OF
EARLY TRADES
& CRAFTS
The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts is a nationally recognized history museum in Madison
with a mission to inspire a connection to New Jersey history, culture, trades and crafts. Housed
in an architecturally stunning historic building, the museum’s focus is on education, but it is
also committed to historic preservation.
The museum has a collection of 18th- and 19th-century artifacts representing the history of
New Jersey. The collection, with more than 8,900 objects, includes tools, textiles, pottery and
archival materials representing the people who lived and worked in the state throughout the
centuries. Featured throughout the museum’s galleries, the collection also plays an important
part in special exhibits and educational programs.
The exhibit “Working the Land” tells the stories of those men and women who lived in New
Jersey during the early 1800s, exploring the tools and strategies that helped the people of the
time meet the challenges of working the land. The main gallery features the exhibit “Journey
Stories,” a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. It explores
how movement has shaped our nation’s history, from the earliest European settlers and Native
American displacement to the effects transportation advancements have had on modern mobility.
In 2022, after nearly four years of planning, the museum broke ground on construction of its
new Viewable Storage Facility. Part of the museum’s strategic plan is to modernize its facility to
accommodate increased visitors and ensure the long-term safety and sustainability of artifacts
and archival materials. The project will enable visitors to observe the curatorial and collections
staff at work in the collections area.
One of the museum’s favorite events is its annual fundraising gala, the proceeds of which
help provide free educational museum field trips to students throughout New Jersey, as well
as lifelong learning programs for senior adults and specialized tours for organizations that
serve individuals living with disabilities. This year’s speakeasy-themed benefit will take place
on October 5 at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park. —JM
establishments to satisfy
your palate.
Madison offers a highly
varied restaurant scene—from Bottle Hill
Tavern, which opened in 2018 and was
named for the historic Bottle Hill District,
to the venerable, upscale Italian restaurant Il
Mondo Vecchio. Places to eat and drink are
interspersed throughout the borough, not
contained in any one restaurant row, enlivening
stretches of Main Street, Park Avenue,
Prospect Street and Central Avenue.
In the mood for pizza? You have great
options with Romanelli’s Pizza & Italian
Eatery, Firehouse, Tino’s Artisan Pizza Co.,
and more. In the mood for American food,
Mexican fare, Thai dishes, Indian food or a
sandwich? You’ll find it all in Madison.
And don’t forget about dessert at spots
like McCools for the best ice cream around
or Crowley for can’t-beat cupcakes.
The options are endless in Madison. All we
have left to say is: Happy eating!
When owner and Pizzaiolo Tino Procaccini conceptualized
his first eatery the idea was to provide
a hybrid of Roman and Neapolitan pizza using allnatural
and organic ingredients. Six locations later
he has done just that. Every Tino’s not only shares
the same menu with clean food, we do our best to
make sure every to-go container, drinking straw,
cutlery kit and even bathroom towel is made from
either compostable, eco friendly or recycled products.
We also offer tons of gluten-free, dairy-free
and vegan options. Tino’s makes life a little more
delicious for those with dietary restrictions.
