ARCHITECTURE/BUILD:
A FARMHOUSE WITH MODERN FLAIR
Builder Richard Wonsala creates a home and working farm on the
former Gallup property in Skillman. The project includes building
a residence and a barn, installing boundary fencing, grading and
sculpting pastures, and engineering a water system.
RIVERSIDE REVERIE
Barbara Batesko of Bee Hive Interiors designs an idyllic outdoor
environment at her home just steps from the Shark River in
Avon-by-the-Sea. It features inviting places to linger, have a quiet
conversation, savor a meal, catch some rays or spend a chilly
evening by the fire in an outdoor sitting area.
48
OLD HOUSE, NEW STORY
Designer Jennifer Muirhead and her husband, Christian, choose a
historic home in Harding Township’s horse country, knowing it
would be a good place to raise their daughter when they returned
from Los Angeles. But they also wanted to tailor it to their needs.
BRIGHTER GRAYS
Interior designer Sandra Cosimano of Sandra Marie Interior
Designs modernizes, expands and brightens a 1930s Essex
County residence by removing several walls for a more open feel
and bringing in shades of gray to establish a serene vibe.
FRESH START
A Bergen County couple seize the opportunity to rebuild after a
devastating fire. Architect James Paragano and interior designer
Robyn Karp envision a home that includes spaces for quiet
reflection as well as for entertaining family and friends.
editorinchief | LETTER
Cost is always a consideration when my wife
and I plan a home improvement project. Does the expenditure seem reasonable? If
we move, what about our return on investment? Somewhere in our deliberations,
we probably consider how happy the change would make us. But that’s hard to
quantify. I’ve never seen a study on how much pleasure home improvement projects
bring. Until now.
We learn not only the cost recovery but also the “Joy Score” for home projects
in the latest “Remodeling Impact Report,” a study conducted for the National
Association of Realtors® (NAR) and the National Association of the Remodeling
Industry® (NARI). The Joy Score measures the happiness that homeowners reported
for particular renovations on a scale of 1 to 10.
Who knew that refinishing floors could be such a plus-plus: 147% cost recovery
and 10 on the Joy Score. Also of note — and just in time for the inspiring stories
in this Before + After issue: a complete kitchen renovation (75% cost recovery, Joy
Score of 10), complete bath renovation (71% and 9.8) and converting an attic into
living space (75% and 10). Also earning the coveted Joy Score of 10: painting the interior, renovating a
closet, installing new wood flooring and adding a home office. See more study results at NARI.com.
Whether renovated or newly constructed, the homes featured in this issue would all receive joyful ratings
from the owners. In Skillman, builder Richard Wonsala and his team rebuilt a home on the former Gallup
estate (yes, those Gallups) to replace one that had an impractical layout, the result of multiple renovations
over the years. The project included transforming the property into a working farm (“A Farmhouse with
Modern Flair,” page 30).
To whet your appetite for spending time outdoors this season, we visit designer Barbara Batesko’s home
in Avon-by-the-Sea, where she created an ideal environment for get-togethers just steps from the Shark
River (“Riverside Reverie,” page 42).
Upon their return to New Jersey after 18 years in California, designer Jennifer Muirhead and her husband,
Christian, chose an 1885 Victorian farmhouse in Harding Township’s horse country as the perfect place
to raise their daughter near extended family. The home was in good shape, but some updates were in order
(“Old House, New Story,” page 48).
The owners of a 1930s maze-like home in Essex County called on designer Sandra Cosimano to fashion
more open, modern spaces. She began by creating a main artery from the front door to allow access to
every room and then added a serene vibe with a predominantly gray palette (“Brighter Grays,” page 58).
A Bergen County couple built a new home after their former one was heavily damaged by fire. Architect
James Paragano and interior designer Robyn Karp created spaces for quiet contemplation as well as
entertaining family and friends (“Fresh Start,” page 64).
Also in this issue, we unveil the latest in outdoor furnishings (“Fresh-Air Fun,” page 21) and in products
designed for the heart of the home (“In the Kitchen,” page 24).
We hope you will take us with you in print and online as you spend the summer in the places that
bring you joy.
A Farmhouse with Modern Flair
A Skillman home beautifully merges two distinct aesthetics
This property in Skillman has an illustrious history.
Known as the Gallup Estate, it once belonged to the
family that pioneered the famous polling system. The
existing home was built in the early part of the 20th
century, and both it and the surrounding acreage needed an upgrade.
Richard Wonsala, of RDA Building Contractors in Wall Township,
was tasked with reimagining the residence and transforming the
land into a workable farm.
DESIGN NJ: What was the scope of the project?
RICHARD WONSALA: There were many facets to this job. It’s a large
piece of property and the clients wanted a “gentleman’s farm.” Our
role involved getting the entire farm up and running. In addition
to constructing the house, we built a barn, installed boundary
fencing, graded and sculpted all the pastures within that fencing
and engineered a water system.
The exterior of the home is clad in clay-fired brick. “Not one brick is the same,” builder
Richard Wonsala says. “We used a technique called lime washing. That’s why the house
looks white. It’s a living finish that changes with the weather according to moisture
content and temperature.”
need or desire arise.
infrastructure. Wonsala’s team left it until later in the project when those utilities
could be relocated.
A rustic table on a covered patio is a good place
to take a midday break after working all morning
on the farm.
DNJ: Was the house a new build or a renovation?
RW: Technically, it was not a new build.
We kept an original patio at the back of
the home, so local guidelines designated
this as a renovation. The existing house
on the property was built in the 1930s.
Unfortunately, it had been remodeled
multiple times over the years, resulting
in an impractical, chopped-up layout.
While the house was not worth saving,
the materials comprising it were. We hired
a deconstruction company to take the
structure apart board by board. They were
able to salvage almost all of the materials for
use elsewhere. This was an environmentally
sound decision, and the homeowners were
able to claim it as a charitable donation.
DNJ: What would you call the style of the new
house?
RW: The owner likes to call it a farmhouse;
it’s a more sophisticated version of a farm.
Part of the job was to make the outside look
100 years old. To do that, we used materials
on the exterior — such as real copper — that
would have been used a century ago. The
clay-fired bricks are from North Carolina,
and each one is different. To create the finish
on the bricks, we used a technique called
lime washing; that’s why the house looks
white. It’s a living finish that changes with the
weather according to moisture content and
stylenewjersey | EXPERT ADVICE
Wonsala and his team constructed the custom island and wine cabinet in the kitchen.
The glass rails on the staircase keep sight lines open from the living room into the
adjacent entry and kitchen.
The floor-to-ceiling concrete fireplace surround in the living room is reinforced with
steel so the wall can withstand weather, door slams and other vibrations.
temperature. We used it because it gave us the traditional, rustic look that
the clients wanted.
DNJ: The interiors are anything but rustic. What was the directive for the design?
RW: The clients wanted an ultramodern aesthetic inside the house.
We created the design around the metal staircase; it’s something really
special. It’s made from glass and structural steel that we found at a
steelyard. We didn’t want it to look manufactured or store-bought.
We sanded the steel and painted it matte black on site, then welded
it together, keeping the welds visible. The stair tread is made of solid
34 June/July 2023

hunks of white oak. There are no newel posts on the rails; the only thing
holding up the rails is the glass itself.
DNJ: Like the stair rail, the interior architecture is straightforward and
unfussy. How did you create that look?
RW: The interior of the clients’ former house was very traditional. In
this house, however, they were looking for something not as formal so
we kept the interior structure clean. It’s absent of molding, but that
doesn’t mean it’s absent of detail. Rather than standard trim, we put
in aluminum “reglets.” Reglets allow for a half-inch-by-half-inch recess
along the door jamb. That recess creates a shadow that defines the
doorway. It’s spackled into the drywall so it’s seamless. The entire house
is trimmed that way. We did use standard base molding, but that was
strictly because it was necessary for mechanical reasons, i.e., to hold
down the floor.
DNJ: The fireplaces are also clean and linear yet are still dramatic additions to
the décor. How did you achieve the distinctive looks?
RW: The wood-burning living room fireplace is just a black brick box
surrounded by concrete and flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows. We
The dining room is
furnished with a square
table and angular chairs,
reinforcing the linear forms
of the architecture.
The primary bedroom has a contemporary feel with simple lines and an understated
palette. The beamed ceiling is a nod to the farmhouse style on the home’s exterior.
RDA Building Contractors Inc. crafted the wine cellar from an ash tree on the property that
was suffering from blight and presented a danger to the house. Wonsala extols the value
of raw lumber in construction. “Everything in the wine cellar came from a tree that was
approximately 5 feet in diameter,” he says. “The growth rings are so tight and the grain is so
beautiful. You can’t buy wood like that today.”
36 June/July 2023

were worried about the torsion of the wind
blowing against it, or even just the vibration from
a slammed door, so we ribbed the concrete with
steel and edged the windows in steel.
The fireplaces in the dining room and primary
bedroom are of European design and wouldn’t have
met United States fire codes. To bring them up to
U.S. code, we had to make the walls surrounding
them out of non-combustible masonry boards
and vent the boxes. Above each, there’s a thin line
visible; that’s where the heat escapes.
DNJ: You mentioned that you were tasked with
making this property a working farm. What were the
challenges involved with that?
RW: It was interesting and completely different
from working on a standard lot. This project
encompassed everything from determining how
to get construction vehicles onto the property
while retaining the original trees to how the
barn and the pasture would be positioned. We
needed to work around a stream, and we had to
install geothermal wells in locations where they
wouldn’t be in the way of the pastures. (The farm
includes livestock.) The project was a complex
undertaking, but it was really cool because of its
vastness and multifaceted aspects. DNJ
Designer Barbara Batesko’s home,
located just a few yards from the
Shark River in Avon-by-the-Sea,
DESIGN BY BARBARA BATESKO
Riverside Reverie
IN AVON-BY-THE-SEA, A DESIGNER CREATES AN IDYLLIC OASIS
FOR OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING
The pier and the gazebo were existing
on the property. “We could decorate the
gazebo any way we wanted to, but we
couldn’t move it or make it bigger or
smaller,” Batesko says. She added a new
roof and reclad the columns to match
the exterior of the house. In addition,
the gazebo is equipped with a heater in
the ceiling.
The Jersey Shore holds a special place in Barbara Batesko’s
heart. The designer, owner of Bee Hive Interiors in Avonby-the-Sea,
grew up spending summers on the coast. Today, she lives in
this beach town year-round. She frequently entertains family and friends
at her home on the Shark River, where she has created an ideal outdoor
environment to host waterside get-togethers.
It’s easy to see why Batesko’s home is a popular gathering spot. In every
corner of the well-appointed property, there’s an inviting place to pause
and linger; have a quiet conversation in a comfy, cushioned armchair on
the covered porch; savor a meal in the outdoor kitchen; catch some rays in
a poolside chaise; enjoy a bay breeze in the gazebo at the end of the private
pier; or spend a chilly evening by the fire in the open-air sitting room.
The various spaces have a common decorative thread — a subtle palette
largely made up of white, blue and gray tones. The look is cohesive, with
understated appeal that lets nature be the star. Though the colors are
carried from area to area, Batesko created distinctions between the spaces
by incorporating two types of flooring. “I didn’t want it all to be the same
material,” she says. “I used ipe wood around the pool, in the outdoor
kitchen and on the pier, and bluestone tile on the covered porch and the
outdoor sitting room.”
designnewjersey.com 43

The covered porch overlooks the gazebo
and is bordered by a bed of hydrangeas and
New Guinea impatiens. It features a cozy
conversation area with commercial-grade
seating that can withstand coastal weather.
The proximity of the water makes for a dreamy backyard, but it
also requires that furnishings and fixtures be durable in the face of the
elements. “That’s always a big concern,” the designer notes. To ensure the
furniture could withstand the rigors of a coastal climate, Batesko selected
many commercial-grade pieces from Janus et Cie. “They sell to hotels,
so I was pretty confident that these pieces were going to be sturdy. The
wind here gets pretty strong. These stand up to weather. The table I chose
for the kitchen area is extremely heavy, weighing over 300 pounds. It’s
not going anywhere.” Likewise, the lounge chairs next to the pool are
constructed with substantial teak frames. “They’re also very heavy. They’re
not going to blow away.”
Very often, weather isn’t the only challenge on a New Jersey
44 June/July 2023

waterfront property. In this case, Batesko had to work around landuse
restrictions. “When I bought the property, I didn’t know that we
couldn’t have a pool in the back of the house,” she says. “I had to
design the house in an L-shaped manner if I wanted to have a pool. At
first I was upset about it, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
The layout gives us privacy.”
Indeed, the long, narrow pool — perfect for doing laps or taking a
quick dip — is tucked into the side yard and bordered on one side by a
stone wall backed by the neighbor’s existing evergreens. “The pool and
landscaping were designed for maximum privacy,” Batesko says.
To add color to the poolside area, Batesko accessorized with flowers.
“There are planters on the outside of the stone wall. In the summer, the
designnewjersey.com 45

hydrangeas come up over the wall and soften the stone.” Hydrangeas, a
coastal mainstay in the Garden State, also appear in several other places
on the property. “There are certain plants that do better in certain areas
and, around here, hydrangeas grow beautifully.
Though there may have been a few issues involved in the seaside design,
Batesko took them in stride, thanks to her love for the Shore. “With any
build there are challenges. In the end it all worked out. I was so happy
with everything. I think it came out beautifully.” DNJ
“The pool is not very large, but it serves the purpose,” Batesko says. The neighbor’s
existing evergreens provide privacy for swimmers and sunbathers.
“We’re on the river. If the weather is really bad, water can seep in under the hurricane
screen so I used an indoor/outdoor carpet,” Batesko says of the outdoor sitting room
(opposite. top). The room is outfitted with two screens: a hurricane screen and a bug
screen. “When the weather is cold or rainy, we can put both screens down, light the
fireplace, and use the ceiling and floor heaters. It’s very cozy. We can use that room
almost all year.”
A juxtaposition of old and new, the dining room pairs a traditional
custom pedestal table and Oushak rug with modern lighting and a
original pine plank floors, with endearing knots
and nail holes, were uncovered and restored.
Designer Jennifer Muirhead and husband Christian’s search
for a home back East — after living in Los Angeles for 18
years — ended with a charming 1885 Victorian farmhouse
on three acres in Harding Township’s horse country.
The designer grew up in nearby Hunterdon County. “I always wanted
to come back to this beautiful part of New Jersey,” Muirhead says. She
and her husband knew it would be a good place to raise their young
daughter near her many cousins and other extended family. Friday, their
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, also made the 3,000-mile journey home.
The area’s “got the best of both worlds,” Muirhead says. “It feels like
the country” but is only a 30-minute drive to a major airport. Their
home, known as the Suydam House, according to the Harding Township
Historical Society, was home to a dairy farmer named Henry Suydam in
the late 1800s. It’s quite possibly connected to Somerset-based Suydam
Farms, run today by the 13th generation of the Suydam family.
“We knew the moment we stepped inside that it was a special house,”
says Muirhead, principal of Jennifer Muirhead Interiors. “The glasswork
around the front door alone was stunning.” They found the home well
cared for and in decent shape. Still, they were ready to make some changes.
“It was really important to us that we retain its history and charm,”
Muirhead says. Moreover, “we loved the idea of being part of the ‘story’
of a home.” One of the first things the couple did before moving in was
to remove the “new” floors from the 1920s in various rooms and restore
the original pine planks underneath. “We loved seeing the old iron nail
heads in the original floors,” she says.
The process came with some surprises — namely in the dining room,
where they uncovered evidence of a fire. Consequently, a flooring
specialist restored what they could and filled in the rest with reclaimed
pieces from an old train station along the Lackawanna Railroad line.
…..
As much as Muirhead is drawn to old houses and their distinct charms,
she didn’t want her home to feel like a museum or locked in time. Rather,
50 June/July 2023

Two antique étagères (one visible) were inherited from Christian Muirhead’s
grandmother. Drawers on the bottom still house some of her tchotchkes, Jennifer
Muirhead says. The Danish teak Midcentury Modern game table is from Chairish.
The contemporary Hunterdon County landscape is by local plein-air artist Jared
Clackner. The carved wooden chair once belonged to Christian Muirhead’s
grandfather. “It reminds us of him, Jennifer Muirhead says.
“it needed to be comfortable and practical for our family,” she says. The
result is a mix of old and new that speaks to Muirhead’s love of traditional
English country décor and her fondness of color and pattern. She also
included a few Midcentury Modern pieces, a style she grew to appreciate
while living in California. Every room contains a memory, Muirhead says,
including inherited family pieces, antiques, and collections of vintage and
contemporary artwork.
In consideration of the home’s traditional layout of independent
rooms, the design unfolded room by room, with the degree of natural
light informing many decisions. In the north-facing den, which receives
little bright sunlight and is enveloped with rich, dark millwork, “we
decided to lean into this and make it moody and cozy — the perfect spot
for watching movies in front of the fire,” she says. An olive-green grasscloth
wallcovering from Schumacher “felt just right,” as did an English
roll-arm sectional deep enough to “really curl up in.”
In a light-filled guest room, Muirhead chose “the palest pink on the walls”
and repeated it in the dining room. Soft pink is a “universally flattering
color” that also looks great by candlelight, she says. The dining room,
like other areas, represents Muirhead’s balanced approach to combining
elements of tradition with modern touches. A Queen Anne-style pedestal
table — custom made at a factory in England — is perfectly at home with
a modern chandelier, a contemporary buffet and period artwork.
designnewjersey.com 51

BEFORE
Nature — and the property itself — also served as inspiration for the
design scheme, with shades of blue and green paired with calming neutral
tones appearing as common threads throughout. “I definitely did not
want to compete with what’s outside the windows,” Muirhead says, such
as the “massive hydrangeas” that are like featured artwork in the frontfacing
living room every spring and summer. Subsequently, “every room
has some floral element in either wallpaper or textile choice.”
As one might expect in an older home, not every improvement
channeled a bed of roses (or hydrangeas). When it came time to install
light fixtures where they didn’t exist, for instance, cutting into thick plaster
walls and diagonally placed beams became an adventure for electricians,
Muirhead says. “They had never seen construction like this before.”
Transforming attic space — former maid’s quarters — into his-and-her
home offices came with its own set of challenges. “Nothing could be
Moody and cozy with olive green grass-cloth wallcovering and an English roll-arm sofa,
the den (opposite) is the perfect place to curl up by one of the home’s four wood-burning
fireplaces. The equestrian print, found at Larger Cross in Oldwick, hints at the bridle
paths that flank the property and surrounding area. Existing millwork is a hallmark of fine
craftsmanship.
To put their own stamp on the guest bathroom (above) with its time-honored penny-tile
flooring and marble-top vanity, the designer clad the walls in a classic Morris & Co. print
that was designed in the mid-1800s. “It’s a nod to the home’s age, but the color is fresh,”
the designer says. Window treatments — lined with classic Schumacher tape trim —
make the perfect finishing touch.
The “happy” window treatment fabric from Manuel Canovas was Muirhead’s “jumping off
point” for the design of a light-filled guest bedroom with Matouk bedding (right top).
Antique Swedish pine twin beds (one shown, right bottom) enchant a guest bedroom
with their own sense of history. Walls are painted in “Light Blue” by English paint
company Farrow & Ball, one of Muirhead’s favorite paint brands. “The pigmentation is
so good and has a lot of dimension,” she says.
A previous owner converted a former fifth bedroom into a walk-in closet with
access to the primary bedroom. “I pulled a medium sagey green from the bedroom
drapery and applied it in almost a monochromatic manner” to complement the
design scheme, Muirhead says. Closets were repainted in “Fieldstone” by Benjamin
Moore & Co. “I love how the delicate Visual Comfort & Co. light mimics the branches
in the GP&J Baker wallpaper,” she adds. The table skirt ties everything together.
her office, she repainted the walls, ceiling and trimwork all in “China
White” by Benjamin Moore & Co. “I needed it to be a bright, white
space that wouldn’t affect my clients’ projects in any way.”
In contrast, the existing deep-toned paneling remained intact in husband
Christian’s office. “He wanted a dark, cozy space where he could spend
with comfortable seating and fun touches such as vintage artwork and
memorabilia from their life in Los Angeles. “When we bought the house
in 2018, we had no idea how valuable these spaces would become to us.”
Today, Harding Township is still home for the Muirheads, who
relocated just one mile down the road to a house with enough gathering
space around the kitchen for extended family members who have since
moved back to the area. Of their former home, Muirhead says, “I think
I miss the porch the most! We had many wonderful dinner parties out
there, and we loved sitting there in a summer rainstorm.” DNJ
THE NOTABLE, YET NEUTRAL, TONE
SETS A SOOTHING FOUNDATION IN AN
ESSEX COUNTY HOME
This 1930s-era residence was in need of an update. “The original
home was composed of smaller rooms that flowed maze-like
through out the house. The clients wanted to modernize and expand,” says
Sandra Cosimano, an allied member of the American Society of Interior
Designers and owner and sole proprietor of Sandra Marie Interior Designs
LLC in Tewksbury. An addition at the rear of the home and the removal of
several walls began the transformation to the open, airy home the clients
desired. “We created a main artery from the front door that allowed access
to every room without going through another room,” Cosimano explains.
The new, brighter spaces have a serene vibe thanks to a predominantly
gray palette. “The owners have a very busy lifestyle,” the designer notes.
“I wanted to create something soothing.” The gray tones are carried from
room to room with slight adaptations. “We went with a gray undertone but
created variations in each room to pick up either a blue, a green or a silver.”
In the kitchen, the color scheme is reflected in cabinetry that features
two distinct gray tones. “We wanted the kitchen to be the heartbeat of
the house for family and entertaining,” Cosimano says.
The room is designed to facilitate gatherings large and small with
invisible to whatever
degree possible,”
Cosimano explains.
In the living room, Cosimano added the wainscoting
distinct areas for meal prep, dining and lounging. “The room was so large,”
Cosimano says. “The clients didn’t need a table that would fill that entire
space, so I created two segments out of the dining area. One is for eating, the
other for relaxing with two armchairs and a table in between.”
The entire kitchen is accessorized with silver-toned accents, including
the hardware on the cabinetry and the light fixtures above the island. “To
Cylindrical light fixtures in the primary bathroom mirror the circles in the border of the inlaid tile “rug.” Cosimano removed the top half of the shower wall. “I knew the
homeowners might enjoy natural light coming into the shower.”
complement the soothing palette, I insisted on using a satin nickel here
and throughout the house,” Cosimano explains.
In the family room, the gray palette coexists peacefully with wood
tones designed to stand out. The coffee table, for example, features a
geometric wood base and glass top. “For me, coffee tables are focal points.
I looked for a very long time for something architectural,” the designer
says. “I wanted the base to be artistic, and I wanted a glass top to create an
open feel.” Cosimano topped off the room with a shallow coffered ceiling
composed of white beams against a pale gray background.
In the living room, the designer added interest to standard, flat walls
by adding white wainscoting and panels bordering gray insets to create a
frame for the abstract art the homeowners enjoy. The wainscoting carries
into the dining room, where an octagonal ceiling treatment pulls focus to
a starburst light fixture. Glass sliding doors to the kitchen can be left open
to promote traffic between the spaces or closed to display the millwork
accentuating the glass. “We used straight lines to communicate that this
design is transitional rather than traditional.”
The project was a great success, Cosimano says, thanks in large part
to the clients. “I had the pleasure of working with incredibly gracious,
professional homeowners who were clear on their objectives for the
renovation but were then willing to hand over the visualization and
execution of the project with such trust. The chemistry with them
was magnificent, and I am grateful to them for giving me such a
wonderful opportunity.” DNJ
A NEW HOME ACCOMMODATES
THE CHANGING NEEDS OF THE OWNERS
ABergen County couple turned misfortune into
opportunity after their home was heavily damaged
by fire. Rather than undertake arduous repairs, the
empty-nester couple decided to build a new home that
better meets their needs at this stage of life.
The owners appreciate quiet times alone but also love to entertain
The classic Georgian home by architect James Paragano has a symmetrical motif with
a primary center block and secondary wings. It’s covered in clapboard and stone with
copper accents.
A gallery-style foyer is meant to welcome guests and channel them to other rooms.
designnewjersey.com 65

The modern chandelier lights all three stories of the front staircase.
The family room has a put-your-feet-up vibe thanks to large ottomans that also serve as game tables.
friends and host their three adult children when they visit with their
families. Accordingly, they asked architect James Paragano to design
a classic home that fits well in the neighborhood with interiors scaled
both for entertaining and for relaxation and reflection. “They wanted an
elegant, timeless home where they can live and entertain,” says Paragano,
a registered architect, member of the American Institute of Architects
and managing member of James Paragano Architect LLC in Morristown.
The classic Georgian home has a symmetrical motif with a primary
center block and secondary wings. It’s covered in clapboard and stone
with copper accents. A screen porch at the back leads to a stone terrace
and swimming pool where the family gathers in good weather.
Paragano describes the interior layout as traditional center hall with a
twist. “We created a gallery that connects the rooms,” he explains. “They
wanted a traditional home with spaces defined by walls” rather than open
concept. And different spaces have different details. “We like to vary
the detail based on the story of the house,” Paragano says. Ceilings, for
66 June/July 2023

example, are coffered in the dining room and feature a geometric rhythm
of rails and stiles in the library. The pièce de résistance, however, may
be the three-story open stairwell that begins in the foyer and rises to the
top floor of the three-story-plus-basement home. The stairwell is fairly
compact, but abundant windows bring in light that “cascades through
the well and down into the center of the home,” says Paragano, who also
designed all of the millwork and cabinetry in the home.
Interior designer Robyn Karp, who joined the project on the recom mendations
of the architect and nearby clients, describes the interiors as a
true collaboration with the architect and the homeowner. Although the
exterior is classical, “I encouraged her to go a little more transitional with
the interiors,” Karp says. She did incorporate a few pieces rescued from
their former home, including a sideboard in the dining room, a sofa in the
primary bedroom, sculptures acquired while traveling and leaded glass
windows that now have pride of place in the back staircase. “I’m a big
believer in using existing pieces that are important to you,” Karp says.
designnewjersey.com 67

She also knew the home would have to be suitable for the couple
when they were alone as well as when their children and grandchildren
visit. “They’re a very close family,” she says. “I had to make it kidfriendly
and practical, but also elegant for when they entertain.”
That elegance begins in the entry. “The foyer feels inviting and
interesting,” Karp says. “When you open the door and walk inside,
a console catches your eye with its blue-gray lacquer finish and legs
that face different directions, one made of satin brass. It’s more modern
against the traditional staircase.” The staircase itself, which Paragano
designed, is a work of art, Karp says. “I’m obsessed with that handrail,”
she says. Along with the console, a modern chandelier balances the
traditional style of the staircase. “You see the chandelier on three floors
The living room is a good spot for quiet contemplation or to enjoy an impromptu
concert when the owners’ daughter stops by to play the piano.
so it had to be long and yet had to feel open and light because the
stairwell isn’t that big.”
In the often-used family room, two ottoman tables break up the space
in front of a long sectional, allowing people to move around more freely
than if there had been one long ottoman. The upholstered edges of the
ottomans provide a comfortable place to rest feet, while metal inserts in
the center double as game tables for a family that enjoys board games,
Karp says. “Faux crocodile upholstery on the ottoman tables and a cutvelvet
zigzag pillow add a fun vibe,” she adds.
When anyone prefers a quiet chat rather than watching television
or playing games, the living room is just a few steps across a hallway,
offering places to sit on a comfortable silk mohair sofa or modern
swivel chairs covered in wool sateen. The rooms aren’t oversize, but the
10-foot-high ceilings on the main level create a spacious feeling. Karp
took advantage of the high ceiling and chose a dramatic chandelier with
dark glass shades to add a moody note. “It’s modern but elegant,” she
68 June/July 2023

says. The room has several of Karp’s favorite furnishings, including a
coffee table with inset brass legs and a marble top as well as a rug with
a subtle blue pattern that ties the room together. The daughter’s trip to
Iceland is commemorated in a photo that Karp enlarged and hung over
the fireplace. Flanking the fireplace are doorways to the library.
The dark-against-light theme in the living room is reversed in the
adjacent library, with light furniture against dark-paneled walls.
Although the family room, living room and office look very different
from one another, they all carry through a blue theme. “I call it my
360 rule,” Karp says. “If you spin around in a full circle, whatever your
eye takes in should feel connected. People make a mistake by saying
one room is only orange, another room is only green, and so on. That
makes me feel like I’m in different homes. You should be able to take
a chair from one room and put it in any room in your house and
it should look familiar, even though each room should have its own
function, flavor and appeal.”
In the dining room, Karp placed a sideboard and sconces from the
owners’ previous home in an alcove. An eye-catching chandelier of glass
and brass cylinders is long enough to cast light the length of the table,
which opens up to accommodate guests. The patterned draperies add a
splash of color and continue the blue thread as it makes its way through
the home.
In the kitchen, classic cabinetry designed by Paragano is painted a fresh
shade of white along the perimeter while the island has a stained finish.
Karp added dark blue pendant lights over the island.
In the back stairwell, a few steps up from the garage entrance, a deep
blue storage unit provides a convenient spot for grandchildren to stow
their gear when they arrive. The highlight of the space, though, is a set
The thread of blue that makes its way through the home continues in the library. One
of Karp’s favorite blues here is a leather-topped Jonathan Adler desk (foreground). “The
color is absolutely delicious,” she says.
designnewjersey.com 69

The sideboard and sconces were among a handful of furnishings that made the
transition from the old home to the new one. The sideboard sits in an alcove that was
part of architect James Paragano’s design for the room.
The architect also designed the cabinetry in the kitchen and throughout the home.
“We design cabinetry organically to fit into our architecture,” Paragano says. “That’s
very important to us.”
of leaded glass windows salvaged from the owners’ former home. “The
windows resonate with the family and add so much personality,” Paragano
says. “It’s a lovely home. It has depth and texture, integrity and layers.”
The homeowners are thrilled. The wife describes Paragano’s plans as
thoughtfully detailed. “His design includes every built-in, every piece
of trim, specifically nuanced to accommodate the needs of our family,”
she says. She also enjoyed working with the interior designer. Her use
of textures and palettes is beautiful, she says, adding that Karp truly
understood the aesthetic that she and her husband wanted. DNJ
