MAAKALLA
Maakalla, the true gem of Kalajoki, is located
18 kilometres off the mainland in the Bay of
Bothnia. Popular boat trips are organised to
the island in the summer. A special feature
of Maakalla is the island’s autonomy, which
was granted to fishermen by the King of
Sweden in the 18th century. The annual local
island meeting still makes the decisions
on the island’s affairs. The surges of the sea,
the fishermen’s huts, the Maakalla museum
and the idyllic Kalla church welcome day visitors
to the island. You can travel to Maakalla
aboard the traditional sail boat Ansio,
SeaKalajoki’s DMS Matilda, or the Kiira ship.
RAHJA ARCHIPELAGO
The fascinating Rahja archipelago invites you
to do some island hopping. The area covering
about a hundred islands is a perfect marine
destination less than 10 kilometres from the
Hiekkasärkät area. The area is unique on a
European scale, because in Rahja you can
see all habitat types of the isostatic uplift
coast, from the sheltered forests of the
inner archipelago to the outer islets in the
open sea. The sheltered archipelago is great
for kayaking, SUP boarding and fishing, as
well as for ski excursions in the winter, for
example. In the archipelago, you will find
several lean-tos with fire pits, as well as the
Venekari day hut and the Koivukari wilderness
hut.
SIIPONJOKI NATURE TRAIL
The 20-kilometre Siiponjoki nature trail
starts from the northern section of the
Hiekkasärkät area and crosses through
magnificent pine forests, boulder fields,
and wetlands until it reaches the sand
embankments of the Siiponjoki river.
Siiponjoki is a beautiful hiking destination.
Families with younger members can
take a shorter trail starting at the Pleuna
rest stop and following the path running
along the river.
THE HIEKKASÄRKÄT DUCKBOARD
TRAILS, VIHASLAHTI AND
MARISTONPAKAT
A duckboard trail, more than 2 km in
length, runs along the shores of the Hiekkasärkät
holiday area and continues as a
gravel path to the Vihas-Keihäslahti nature
reserve. The trail is suitable for walking
and cycling, and it is also wheelchair
and stroller accessible. At the end of the
trail in Vihaslahti, travellers have access
to a birdwatching tower, a fire pit and a
shelter, information board, and a toilet.
Vihaslahti is home to a variety of bird
species that feed and nest in the area.
The beautiful Maristonpakat area is only a
stone’s throw away from Vihaslahti. The
Maristonpakat sand dunes can be explored
with the brand-new duckboard trail.

Kalajoki and its surroundings are full of
unique sites with long stories to tell. The
old town Plassi radiates history with its
country market and idyllic wooden houses
built on the banks of the Kalajoki river.

The most diverse outdoor adventure park in
the Nordic countries offers a unique venue
for challenging yourself in exciting ways
– perfectly safely. High ropes courses of
different levels with ziplines are a fun way

Trampolines and X-Tower, Europe’s
tallest adventure tower with its 330-metre

13. OLD TOWN PLASSI AND
HAVULA MANOR
Plassi, the old town of Kalajoki, takes visitors
back in time to the old city centre of
Kalajoki with its market square, riverbanks,
and idyllic wooden houses. In Plassi, you can
visit Havula, the Art Nouveau villa of sawmill
owner Oskari Santaholma, and a small fishing
museum. Alternatively, you can simply enjoy
the atmosphere of the main street and the
old wooden houses along the riverbanks. The

14. SUMMER THEATRE FOR
CHILDREN AND ADULTS
In the summer of 2022, the Kalajoki Summer
Theatre, next to the campsite and adventure
park, will offer theatrical experiences
in July and August. Experienced local
theatre enthusiasts, directed by a professional,
are sure to provide you with the perfect
summer theatre experience. The traditional
Children’s Venetian Festival is held on the
last weekend of August and includes plenty
of magic and music. The summer theatre
seats 450 people in its covered seating area.
The stage is also partly covered. During the
intermission, the audience is served coffee
and sweet rolls, as is customary in Finland.

JukuPark has about 20 wild water slides for
you to slide down into heated pools. One of
the most popular activities is the WaterPlay
area, suitable for water lovers of all ages.
There are large sunbathing areas next to the
fun water activities with 500 sun loungers
for the free use of customers. This means

In the centre of Kalajoki, the shopping and
cultural centre MERTA offers diverse library
services and the Virta-Sali Hall, which can be
used both as a cinema and a concert hall. Activities
are organised in the hall regularly throughout
the year. You can find Virta-Sali’s event

The versatile library is a place where you can
read newspapers and magazines and enjoy the
services of the Kahvila Kirja café. You also have
access to a 3D printer, game consoles in the
game room, or the digitisation, editing and
composition programmes offered by the media

TAKE A BREATHER IN HAVULA
The tranquil milieu of Kalajoki’s old town
Plassi encompasses the grounds of the
Havula museum, located among evergreen
trees. Relax in the idyllic old storehouse
of the museum café or in the garden
in the shade of spruce trees. While relaxing,
you can also acquire skills in crafts by
participating in the Hilkka craft workshops
organised during the summer. You can also

THE KIRKA MUSICAL

A musical about the singer loved by all Finns and an icon of the music world.

FINLAND’S FIRST ROCK STAR
Kirill Babitzin, or Kirka, is one of Finland’s
most successful artists. He was our
country’s first real rock star, followed by
hordes of wildly screaming fans. Due to
his Russian emigrant background, Kirka
was handsome and exotic-looking with
dark hair and blue eyes and full of charisma
– born to be a star. His family and
siblings were always important to Kirka.
With his distinctive voice, Kirka sang his
way into the hearts of Finns, performing
a wide spectrum of rock, pop tunes and
ballads, not to mention heavy rock.
The musical is a journey lead by Kirka
from the 1960s all the way to the 21st
century. In addition to Kirka, we will
meet prominent figures of Finnish light
music, such as Kirka’s siblings Sammy
and Muska Babitzin, Danny, Katri Helena,
Kassu Halonen and Hector. The show
takes us back to different stages of the
singer’s long career, the excitement of
his performances in the Eurovision Song
Contest and the Syksyn Sävel song contest,
his successes, love, and great sorrows.

THE TRADE HOUSE OF LANG
Kärjän Talo (Kärjä’s house) is a 200-year-old
house and courtyard that provides unique
accommodation near the city centre of Kalajoki

KALAJOKI FOR DOGS
Kalajoki also warmly welcomes your
four-legged family members! Here you will
find a number of dog-friendly restaurants,
accommodation options as well as activities
and places to visit. Kalajoki also offers great
jogging terrains all year round. Your pet will
also have a relaxing holiday in Kalajoki.
The diverse marine nature is ideal for outdoor
activities and spending leisure time.
For example, the Hiekkasärkät area features
wooden duckboards on the shore for easy
access to places on the beaches. At the northern
end of the tourist centre, the duckboards
connect to the Vihaslahti nature trail,
which leads all the way to the Vihaslahti birdwatching
tower and the wonderful Maristo
area. Crossing highway 8 from the Tapion
Tupa cabin gets you to the Siiponjoki nature
trail. In addition, a network of sawdust tracks
with a soft surface crosses through the tourist
centre. Dogs who are used to cycling and
are in a good shape would enjoy experiencing
a tour around the Kalajoki terrains with their
person riding a fatbike.
A new dog park opened in the centre of Kalajoki
for the canines to run around and meet
friends! The dog park has separate areas for
small and big dogs. The park is located next
to the Jussi Jokinen sports park, so the whole
family will have fun here!
Every now and then nature calls and your
dog just has to go, no matter of where it is.
Let’s keep the beach and the surroundings
