MAAKALLA 

Maakalla, the true gem of Kalajoki, is located 

18 kilometres off the mainland in the Bay of 

Bothnia. Popular boat trips are organised to 

the island in the summer. A special feature 

of Maakalla is the island’s autonomy, which 

was granted to fishermen by the King of 

Sweden in the 18th century. The annual local 

island meeting still makes the decisions 

on the island’s affairs. The surges of the sea, 

the fishermen’s huts, the Maakalla museum 

and the idyllic Kalla church welcome day visitors 

to the island. You can travel to Maakalla 

aboard the traditional sail boat Ansio, 

SeaKalajoki’s DMS Matilda, or the Kiira ship. 

RAHJA ARCHIPELAGO 

The fascinating Rahja archipelago invites you 

to do some island hopping. The area covering 

about a hundred islands is a perfect marine 

destination less than 10 kilometres from the 

Hiekkasärkät area. The area is unique on a 

European scale, because in Rahja you can 

see all habitat types of the isostatic uplift 

coast, from the sheltered forests of the 

inner archipelago to the outer islets in the 

open sea. The sheltered archipelago is great 

for kayaking, SUP boarding and fishing, as 

well as for ski excursions in the winter, for 

example. In the archipelago, you will find 

several lean-tos with fire pits, as well as the 

Venekari day hut and the Koivukari wilderness 

hut. 

SIIPONJOKI NATURE TRAIL 

The 20-kilometre Siiponjoki nature trail 

starts from the northern section of the 

Hiekkasärkät area and crosses through 

magnificent pine forests, boulder fields, 

and wetlands until it reaches the sand 

embankments of the Siiponjoki river. 

Siiponjoki is a beautiful hiking destination. 

Families with younger members can 

take a shorter trail starting at the Pleuna 

rest stop and following the path running 

along the river. 

THE HIEKKASÄRKÄT DUCKBOARD 

TRAILS, VIHASLAHTI AND 

MARISTONPAKAT 

A duckboard trail, more than 2 km in 

length, runs along the shores of the Hiekkasärkät 

holiday area and continues as a 

gravel path to the Vihas-Keihäslahti nature 

reserve. The trail is suitable for walking 

and cycling, and it is also wheelchair 

and stroller accessible. At the end of the 

trail in Vihaslahti, travellers have access 

to a birdwatching tower, a fire pit and a 

shelter, information board, and a toilet. 

Vihaslahti is home to a variety of bird 

species that feed and nest in the area. 

The beautiful Maristonpakat area is only a 

stone’s throw away from Vihaslahti. The 

Maristonpakat sand dunes can be explored 

with the brand-new duckboard trail. 

FASCINATING HISTORY AND 

TRANQUIL VILLAGES 

Kalajoki and its surroundings are full of 

unique sites with long stories to tell. The 

old town Plassi radiates history with its 

country market and idyllic wooden houses 

built on the banks of the Kalajoki river. 

The lively city centre of Kalajoki has

8 kilometres away from the Hiekkasärkät 

holiday area, so shopping, lunch, and

SUMMER THEATRE 

In the summer of 2024, the Kalajoki Summer Theatre will entertain you with the comedy “Haluatko 

mökkiläiseksi?” (Do you want to be a summer cottage owner?). Eija and Pertti, an ordinary 

married couple, win the main prize in a trivia quiz – a summer cottage and the Finnish idyll. To actually 

own the cottage, they have to be able to spend the whole summer there, engaging in various 

tasks. The Kalajoki Summer Theatre has a covered auditorium for 450 people, and the stage is also

MUSIC BY QUEEN 

A musical in memory of Freddie Mercury, the most charismatic singer of all time. At 

the Merisärkkä Summer Theatre in the Kalajoki Hiekkasärkät area, 11 July – 2 August. 

The Merisärkkä Summer Theatre will once 

again present a spectacular musical this 

summer. This smash hit is a spectacle based 

on Queen’s music, with outstanding 

singers, costumes and lights that are true 

to the band’s style. The performance by 

the Finnish Music Theatre is also a tribute 

to the memory of Freddie Mercury, the 

most charismatic singer of all time. 

Freddie is played by Mikael Saari, whose 

charming interpretation of Queen 

has previously been heard in the Tähdet 

Tähdet singing competition, among others. 

The large audience also remembers 

Mikael from the Contest for New Music 

UMK finals, in which he has already 

participated twice. Mikael has also become 

well-known to audiences through 

his performances in Finland’s biggest 

theatres and many roles in musicals. 

Alongside Queen’s story is the tale of a 

Finnish band, the Bohemians, and their 

hilarious journey to take over the world. 

The Bohemians interpret Queen’s music 

brilliantly, but their trip to London isn’t

The Marinan Portti apartments were designed with the marine scenery as an important

The Ceramics Shop Iso-Pahkala’s products
