Do you know what malformations are and
why do they occur? Well, they are
physical deformities or anomalies in our
body that are caused by an error in the
production and evolution of the
morphological characters. In some cases,
malformations are developed during
pregnancy. However, they are not always
present at birth since there are some
cases in which the child comes into the
world with an inactive gene and years
later, it “wakes up” and begins to affect
the person. It is important to mention
how we can avoid the risk of suffering a
malformation.
In first place, the mother and the father of
the baby must have a healthy life and
good medical care before and during
pregnancy. It is also advisable not to drink
alcohol, not to smoke, not to consume
illicit substances, maintain a healthy
weight, avoid some diseases such as
diabetes and hypertension, prevent
infections and have up-to-date
vaccinations.
Even if we do not want to think about it,
the problem of malformations is quite
common. There are not only some
common genetic alterations, but also
some kind of rare ones. Inside the group
of the most well-known are spina bifida,
cleft lip and palate, clubfoot, Down’s
syndrome, hemophilia, congenital hip
dislocation, Tay-Sachs disease and
phenylketonuria fetal alcohol syndrome
among others.
As Down’s syndrome is one of the most
common, we would like to provide you with
a little more information about it. This
syndrome is a condition in which the person
has an extra chromosome. The medical term
for having an extra copy of a chromosome is
‘trisomy’ and Down syndrome is also called
trisomy 21. This extra copy changes the
form of the baby’s body and their brain
development, which can cause both mental
and physical problems.
Inside the group of the less common
malformations, we can name Fragile X
syndrome, Marfan syndrome, congenital
insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis,
Proteus syndrome, Netherton syndrome
and Moebius or Möbius Syndrome. Let us
delve a little deeper into Marfan syndrome,
which affects 1 in 5,000 individuals and is
caused by mutations in the FBN1 gene,
which determines the formation of
fibrillin-1. This protein, which is essential
for connective tissue, is usually found
abundantly in bones, lungs, ligaments of the
eye’s lens and in the aorta. Individuals
affected by this disease are very tall, have
large hands and feet and extraordinarily
flexible joints.
In conclusion, we should all take care of our
health not only for a while, but also for our
whole life in case we decide to have children
in the future, and as a recommendation, the
best thing you can do is not to drink alcohol
or consume narcotic substances, as these
can kill you or your baby.

Un nuevo estilo de
vida o uno
diferente
embarazo. También es aconsejable no
beber alcohol, no fumar, no consumir
sustancias ilícitas, mantener un peso
saludable, evitar algunas enfermedades
o a tu bebé.

Your health with a
new beginning
By Dayanna Gómez
Do you know what is meant by
physical fitness? Does it have any
relation to genetic disorders? To
begin with, it is important to know
what the World Health
Organization says about physical
fitness. This organization states
that physical fitness is the result of
any type of physical activity as any
displacement of the body produced
by skeletal muscles, with the
consequent consumption of energy.
Individuals with an insufficient
degree of physical activity possess a
20% to 30% greater danger of death
compared to individuals who
achieve a sufficient degree of
physical activity.
But you may wonder how physical
fitness is related to Marfan
syndrome. Yes, physical fitness has a
lot to do with Marfan syndrome, as
it has many beneficial effects, such
as lowering blood pressure and
strengthening the cardiovascular
system. It also contributes to weight
reduction, regulation of metabolism
and digestive function.
But in Marfan syndrome, physical activity
should not be of high impact. Exercises
should be regulated depending on the
heart rate, weight or intense effort should
be avoided. If the aorta is not dilated,
higher intensity activities can be done.
Similarly, a series of prior considerations
should not be forgotten before performing
physical exercise such as avoiding
competitive activities, activities that
involve much effort in the joints.
syndrome are those of low danger, mainly
with high aerobic element and low
magnitude as is the case of cycling,
swimming, hiking, fishing, Tai Chi, golf or

Something important to note is the case of
Michael Phelps, in whom this syndrome
has been of great help, since it has given
him a great advantage when competing as
his limbs have a long extension. For
example, the length of his arms when
placed horizontally was 206 centimeters;
this is 12 centimeters longer than his
height. Therefore, we deduce that, in the
case of this athlete, this syndrome has not
been an impediment to his career, but
rather has been a support and a virtue at
the time of swimming.

Su salud con un
nuevo comienzo
Por Dayanna Gómez
¿Sabe qué se entiende por buena
forma física? ¿Tiene alguna relación
con los trastornos genéticos? Para
empezar, es importante saber qué
dice la Organización Mundial de la
Salud sobre la aptitud física. Esta
organización afirma que la aptitud
física es el resultado de cualquier tipo
de actividad física como cualquier
desplazamiento del cuerpo producido
por los músculos esqueléticos, con el
consiguiente consumo de energía.
Los individuos con un grado
insuficiente de actividad física poseen
entre un 20% y un 30% más de peligro
de muerte en comparación con los
individuos que alcanzan un grado
suficiente de actividad física.
Pero quizá se pregunte cómo se
relaciona la forma física con el
síndrome de Marfan. Sí, la forma física
tiene mucho que ver con el síndrome
de Marfan, ya que tiene muchos
efectos beneficiosos, como la
reducción de la tensión arterial y el
fortalecimiento del sistema
cardiovascular. También contribuye a
la reducción de peso, la regulación del
metabolismo y la función digestiva.
Pero en el síndrome de Marfan, la
actividad física no debe ser de alto
impacto. Los ejercicios deben
regularse en función de la frecuencia
cardiaca, debe evitarse el peso o el
esfuerzo intenso. Si la aorta no está
dilatada, se pueden realizar
actividades de mayor intensidad
9
nadar.
En conclusión, mantenerse físicamente
activo puede mejorar la salud del
cerebro, ayudar a controlar el peso,
reducir el riesgo de enfermedades,
fortalecer huesos y músculos y mejorar la
capacidad para realizar actividades
cotidianas. Pero las personas con
síndrome de Marfan deben hacer
ejercicio con regularidad mediante
actividades de baja intensidad
(aeróbicas) y bajo impacto adaptadas a
sus necesidades específicas.

WHAT SEEMS
IMPOSSIBLE…
23 GOLD
MEDALS
By Solansh Estrella
“You can't put a limit on anything.
The more you dream, the farther you
get.”
Is Marfan syndrome an impediment
or an advantage? According to what
we know, any kind of genetic
disorder may mean an obstacle, but
this is not true. A clear example of
what seems impossible is Michael
Phelps, the greatest Olympian ever.
Even given the fact that Phelps
practices a sport in which extremely
capable athlete can bag golds across
different distances and strokes, his
feats still blow away those of any
other sportsperson.
Phelps was born in Baltimore on
June 30, 1985. This American
swimmer has set the record for
winning the most medals, 28, of any
Olympic athlete in history. Phelps
competed in his first Olympics at the
age of 15, as part of the U.S. men's
swim team. He was the first
American male swimmer to earn a
spot on five Olympic teams and also
made history as the oldest individual
gold medalist in Olympic swimming
history at the age of 28.
Everything about Phelps was
special, including his physique. The
athlete is 6’4 feet but had an
astounding wingspan of 6’7 feet.
Many have done studies and
written theories on Phelps’
extraordinary body and how it
helped him become the best
swimmer. While his physique is
considered a medical marvel, it
also landed the athlete in trouble.
Michael Phelps may have been
suffering from Marfan syndrome,
the genetic disease that affects the
body's connective tissues. Some
even began worrying for Phelps as
the connective tissue disorder
could become lethal as it affects
the heart. However, it was soon
clear that Phelps did have some
early symptoms of Marfan
syndrome and this did not limit his
dream to get far.
To conclude, even though Phelps’
flexibility and long hands and feet,
early symptoms of Marfan
syndrome which helped him to
outstand as a swimmer, this
without an adequate control, could
have led him into serious heart
problems and even worse, to
death.

LO QUE PARECE
IMPOSIBLE...
23 MEDALLAS
DE ORO
By Solansh Estrella
"No se puede poner límite a nada.
Cuanto más sueñas, más lejos llegas".
¿El síndrome de Marfan es un
impedimento o una ventaja? Según lo
que sabemos, cualquier tipo de
trastorno genético puede suponer un
obstáculo, pero no es cierto. Un claro
ejemplo de lo que parece imposible es
Michael Phelps, el mejor atleta
olímpico de la historia. Incluso
teniendo en cuenta que Phelps
practica un deporte en el que atletas
extremadamente capaces pueden
embolsarse oros en diferentes
distancias y estilos, sus hazañas siguen
superando a las de cualquier otro
deportista.
Phelps nació en Baltimore el 30 de
junio de 1985. Este nadador
estadounidense ha establecido el
récord de medallas ganadas, 28, entre
todos los atletas olímpicos de la
historia. Phelps compitió en sus
primeros Juegos Olímpicos a la edad
de 15 años, formando parte del equipo
masculino de natación de Estados
Unidos. Fue el primer nadador
estadounidense en conseguir un
puesto en cinco equipos olímpicos y
también hizo historia como el
medallista de oro individual de más
edad en la historia de la natación
olímpica, con 28 años.
Todo en Phelps era especial, incluido
su físico. El atleta mide 1,90 metros,
pero tenía una asombrosa
envergadura de 1,90 metros.
Muchos han realizado estudios y
escrito teorías sobre el
extraordinario cuerpo de Phelps y
cómo le ayudó a convertirse en el
mejor nadador. Aunque su físico se
considera una maravilla médica,
también le trajo problemas.
Michael Phelps podría padecer el
síndrome de Marfan, una
enfermedad genética que afecta a
los tejidos conectivos del cuerpo.
Algunos incluso empezaron a
adecuado, podría haberle llevado a
graves problemas cardíacos y lo que
es peor, a la muerte.

SWIMMING, A
LIFE CHANGING
SPORT
By Valenna Gonzalez
Do you know if swimming has some kind
of relationship with the not so
well-known Marfan Syndrome? Maybe
this question seems a bit strange to you,
but before knowing the relationship
between these two, it is important to
know the origins of swimming.
This sport is ancient, there is evidence of
this through cave paintings that are more
than 7000 years old. Also this sport is
mentioned in books from later times such
as the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Bible
among others. For hominids, swimming
was an essential practice to obtain raw
material and for ancient civilizations this
sport began to be considered as
something recreational and important,
since they said that if people did not
know how to swim, they were illiterate.
In fact, swimming consists of movement
through a body of water, using the
strength of the arms and legs in multiple
styles such as free, backstroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly. This sport
can be practiced in pools from 25 to 1500
meters. Swimming can help us lose a
large number of calories depending on
the weight and diet of each person.
Therefore, a person who weighs 70 kg in
half an hour of swimming could burn
around 233 calories. Swimming is a sport
that can be both competitive and
recreational and its practice provides the
swimmer's respiratory and circulatory
system with many benefits. For those
who practice it, it benefits the heart and
lungs, as well as joints such as the neck,
shoulders, and pelvis.
A curious fact about swimming is
related with Michael Phelps, who has
been helped by this sport. He has a
syndrome called "Marfan
Syndrome", which has caused the
athlete to have long limbs. They have
given him an advantage when
performing competitively in the
sport. It has also made him one of the
most recognized swimmers in
history. People with this syndrome
are affected in important parts of the
body such as the heart; for this
reason, they should choose to do
low-risk, low-intensity and aerobic
movement activities. Swimming is
one of the most recommended
sports for this.
In summary, swimming can be very
effective and beneficial for healthy
people as well as for people who
have serious illnesses since it is a
sport that does not require very
forced movements and can be a very
relaxing activity. It also helps motor
development and improves the
resistance of our body, thus
improving our quality of life
completely. It is recommended to
pursue this sport because it helps
people to improve their health and
their body.

NATACIÓN, UN
DEPORTE QUE
CAMBIA VIDAS
deporte. Tiene un síndrome llamado
"Síndrome de Marfan", que ha hecho
que el atleta tenga extremidades
largas. Esto le ha dado una ventaja a
la hora de competir en este deporte.
También le ha convertido en uno de
los nadadores más reconocidos de la
historia. Las personas con este
síndrome se ven afectadas en partes
importantes del cuerpo como el
corazón; por esta razón, deben optar
por realizar actividades de bajo
riesgo, baja intensidad y movimiento
aeróbico. La natación es uno de los
deportes más recomendados para
ello.
En resumen, la natación puede ser
muy eficaz y beneficiosa tanto para
personas sanas como para personas
que padecen enfermedades graves
ya que es un deporte que no
requiere movimientos muy forzados
y puede ser una actividad muy
relajante.
cuerpo.

Interview with boy with the syndrome
Arion Jaramillo, a 17 year old boy, found out 2 years ago that he
suffers from Marfan Syndrome. He tells us that since he learned
that he suffers from this syndrome his life has not changed much,
he only needs daily sports so that his muscles do not atrophy.
Arion does not feel this syndrome until other people make him
realize that he can be a little different from people who do not
have a disease of this magnitude. It is also important to mention
that he was born with the syndrome and it was not very
noticeable so the doctors could not detect it for years, the only
aspect that his family noticed was that his back was not straight,
it was difficult for him to stand up straight and for that reason
they discovered what he suffered from.
