FROM THE MANAGER IAN EVATT WELCOME BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM FOR THIS EVENING’S SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AGAINST FOREST GREEN ROVERS. Playing on a Tuesday night on our own patch straight after the frustrating defeat at Pride Park presents us with a good opportunity to put things right very quickly. Over recent weeks losing games of football is something that we have not become accustomed to and it’s imperative that we put that disappointment at Derby to the backs of our minds and get that rare feeling of a defeat out of system. I thought we didn’t live up to the high standards we have set ourselves and they executed their game plan much better than we did of ours. We knew what was coming, we knew the press was going to be aggressive, we knew they would come after us and that we would have to be smart in tight areas and recognise where the space was. But I don’t think we asked their centre-backs enough questions and that isn’t down to the centreforwards; it is just about putting the ball in the right areas when we are inviting that pressure. I don’t think either team created lots of chances, but they looked more aggressive than we were, more combative, and won too many first contacts, too many second balls. The game was still a tight one and that is where the frustration kicks in because if we had been anything like where we can be then the score would have been completely different. Our unbeaten run has come to an end, but it’s up to us to go on another long one and get as many points as we can do. Tonight gives us that chance but Forest Green will be looking to bounce back themselves from their defeat at the weekend. I’d like to welcome Ian Burchnall, his staff and players, and all those who have made their way up from Gloucestershire for tonight’s game. Last week, Dapo Afolayan left the club and we’d like to wish him well with his career in Germany. This was very much a mutual decision. It is not just down to us to sell, it is a two-way street and it was a dual decision. As a manager, you always hear of fees being branded around, but any player is only worth what an interested party is prepared to offer, and we found the offer acceptable, Dapo found their offer acceptable and from that perspective, we shook hands and we now move on. Of course, we thank him very much for everything he did for us, and he has thanked us for all the help and support that we have given him. As one player left, we managed to bring in another, and what an exciting prospect we have in the guise of Shola Shoretire who joined us on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season. He will offer us something different and we need different things to win different football matches, especially when teams are in that low block. We need someone that can receive centrally, win a one-v-one duel and create, whether it be a pass or a cross or a finish. He’s a player I’ve been aware of and admired for a long time, and we’ve worked extremely hard to get him here. Getting any young player who is as highly thought of as Shola is and around Manchester United’s first team isn’t going to be easy, but United trust us with what we’re doing and have seen what’s happened with Conor Bradley and James Trafford, for instance. We’re delighted to have him and I’m really looking forward to working with him. With a week to go until the transfer window closes a lot of hard work is going on behind the scenes as we need one or two more. We have identified people we want to sign and we will do all we can to make it happen. Finally, I would like to wish Jon Dadi Bodvarsson a speedy recovery from the ankle injury he picked up last week. He was just getting back to his best form, as well. We’ve had a disrupted time with him this year and it’s unfortunate, but we’ll give him all the support he needs and look after his family. He’s a pleasure to work with and we’ll keep him around the group, keep him focused, keep him positive and look forward to welcoming back. Enjoy the game, Ian. www.bwfc.co.uk The Wanderer | 5
